2015 Radical Anime Awards

This year was the first year I really started to watch a lot of anime series. Because of Crunchyroll and Funimation, I’ve consumed enough anime this year to compile a short awards list for 2015.

Now remember, I don’t watch remotely close to all the shows that came out this season, nor do I have a staff to watch the rest for me. So this list will be compiled of shows I actually watched this year. So bear with me when your favourites aren’t even nominated, it likely means I didn’t see them.

Anyways, let’s start with what was bad this year!

Worst Opening Theme

  • “Zettai Muteki☆Fallin’ LOVE☆” by Chikyuu Bouei-bu (Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!)
  • “Kibou no Uta” by Ultra Tower (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma) – WINNER
  • “vanilla sky” by Mashiro Ayano (Gunslinger Stratos)
  • “Colorful Story” by every♥ing! (Re-Kan!)
  • “Cry for the Truth” by MICHI (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)

When it comes to how super intense or super goofy the show is at all times, this theme does not have either of those things going for it. It’s just a calm rock tune and it really doesn’t fit for what you’re about to watch. I wouldn’t expect peanut butter tentacle rape listening to this music.

Worst Ending Theme

  • “Ienai Ienai” by Hilcrhyme (Actually, I Am) – WINNER
  • “Prism Communicate” by Rory/Tuka/Lelei [various voice actresses] (GATE: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri)
  • “Hidamari Days” by Sisters [various voice actresses] (Himouto! Umaru-Chan)
  • “RIGHT LIGHT RISE” by Kanon Wakeshima (Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?)
  • “Secret Sky” by MICHI (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)

It pisses me off to no end that this is the song they chose to close that show. Compared to the really catchy opening tune, this song is just dull as hell, terribly rapped and just annoying as fuck. Ugh!

Worst Art/Animation Style

  • A Seiyu’s Life
  • Classroom ☆ Crisis
  • Re-Kan!
  • Tesagure! Bukatsu-mono – WINNER
  • Teekyu

It’s just ugly as fuck to me, is all. Might just be me, but it just doesn’t look attractive to me at all.

Worst Story

  • Castle Town Dandelion
  • Comet Lucifer
  • Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma
  • Lance n’ Masques
  • Sky Wizards Academy – WINNER

It’s essentially because I think it’s one of the best drawn anime I’ve watched all year, all three girls are gorgeous, the action is decent. I just couldn’t get past the halfway point of the show before I dropped it from my queue. Nothing was grabbing me, I was literally just watching action and ecchi. And if I wanted that, there’s plenty of other options that offer a decent story too.

Show I Should’ve Loved, But Hated

  • Castle Town Dandelion
  • Comet Lucifer – WINNER
  • Gunslinger Stratos
  • Heavy Object
  • Lance n’ Masques

The setting is beautiful, the character designs are beautiful, it reminds me of a tamer (MUCH TAMER) Gurren Lagann, but instead, Comet Lucifer is boring as fuck. Like Sky Wizards, I love the look of it, but I just can’t get into the story they’re trying to tell me. I wanted to like this so bad, but they prevented me from doing so.

Show That Looks Far Better Than It Is

  • Castle Town Dandelion
  • Comet Lucifer
  • Heavy Object
  • Sky Wizards Academy – WINNER
  • Snow White with the Red Hair

As I said earlier, it’s one of the best drawn anime I’ve watched, but the show is just not that interesting. If you read my Radical Sexy Awards post, Rico got the Sexiest Anime Girl award. And yet this show still isn’t that great. You gotta be really bad to have me admit you have the sexiest character of the year in it and I still don’t like the show much.

WTF! Moment of the Year

  • Multiple episodes of just curry food and the judge’s reactions (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma)
  • The jacking off innuendo with Miia’s tail (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou)
  • The end of every episode where the Seventh Brave still isn’t revealed (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)
  • Constantly mentioning how Kanata is a traitor but not explaining why [in the first few episodes] (Sky Wizards Academy) – WINNER
  • Just…just all of it (Teekyu)

How many bad things can I say about Sky Wizards Academy in this awards show? Well I’ve got one more. The initial few episodes before I dropped it, they’d constantly talk how main character Kanata is a traitor…except they’d never give you any context as to why. They’re bashing you over the head with “He’s bad! He’s a waste!” without giving you a reason to believe them. And in a video I made on my YouTube channel back then, I flipped my shit about it. It’s insulting to your intelligence when they do that.

Worst Female Character

  • Albedo (Overlord)
  • Alice Cleveland (Lance n’ Masques)
  • Mamori Tokonome (Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid)
  • Miia (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou) – WINNER
  • Rico Flamel (Sky Wizards Academy)

“Darling! Darling?! Daaarliiiiiiiiiiiing!!!” Ugh…shut the fuck up already, Miia! She seems like a sweet girl and all, but holy fuck is she annoying throughout the majority of the show. Pretty much the only time I didn’t want to tape her mouth shut was when she was being stealthy like “Snake” from Metal Gear. That’s about it, otherwise I had the duct tape ready.

Worst Male Character

  • Kaito Sera (Classroom ☆ Crisis)
  • Zenji Marui (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma)
  • Goldof Auora (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers) – WINNER
  • Kanata Age (Sky Wizards Academy)
  • Maroro (Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen)

I had Goldof pencilled in to be the bad guy during the entire show (while I did have the right culprit in the back of my mind the whole time as well), because he was the least significant one of the seven Braves. He’s boring, doesn’t talk much, he’s essentially a hulking silent type. He offered zero to the show for me.

Worst Show of the Year

  • HackaDoll: The Animation
  • Heavy Object
  • Lance n’ Masques
  • Tesagure! Bukatsu-mono – WINNER
  • Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid

It looked like shit to me, was boring as shit, the characters were annoying as shit and all their shit made zero sense. Perhaps there’s something about that show I was missing, but all I could think of when watching the first episode of it was “…This is shit!”.

And now, let’s get to the stuff that was awesome this year!

Best Opening Theme

  • “Himitsu wo Choudai” by Ars Magna (Actually, I Am) – WINNER
  • “Kakushinteki☆Metamaruphose!” by Umaru Doma [Aimi Tanaka] (Himouto! Umaru-chan)
  • “SUKI!SUKI!SUKI!” by Muco [Hitomi Yoshida] (Lovely Muuuuuuuco!)
  • “PUNCH LINE!” by Shokotan ♥ Denpa Gumi (Punch Line)
  • “Kimiiro Signal” by Luna Haruna (Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend)

Y’know, as much as I really wanted to give the award to Himouto! Umaru-Chan this year, there was no opening that was stuck in my head and had me singing it whenever I could sing a Japanese tune without weirding people out, than Actually, I Am’s theme. The song is a mix of cheesy and really sweet and the video that plays with the song matches it perfectly.

Best Ending Theme

  • “Anata no Omimi ni Plug In!” by Earphones [several voice actresses] (A Seiyu’s Life)
  • “Hey! Smith!!” by Smith and M.O.N. [several voice actresses] (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou) – WINNER
  • “Colorful” Miku Sawai (Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend)
  • “Inner Urge” by Sumire Uesaka (Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist)
  • “Calling my Twilight” by Kanako Itou (Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon)

I love BABYMETAL, so when I heard this song, it reminds me way too much like that group, just not nearly as fast-paced as the band is. But Monster Musume’s cheesy heavy metal (cause only Japan can do it this well) ending tune is just that damn good. The video playing along with it is equally cheesy as well, I fucking love M.O.N. (especially Zombina-chan). Also, I think it’s the only ending theme I know of that became an opening theme for one episode, which was the introduction of M.O.N. to the series.

Best Art/Animation Style

  • Actually, I Am
  • Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma
  • GATE: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri
  • Overlord
  • Punch Line – WINNER

Look I’m sorry that I didn’t pick Food Wars, okay?! But for me honestly, the animation style that I liked the most this year was Punch Line’s. No, the massive amounts of panty shots in the series have nothing to do with it. It’s like a calmer, smoother version of the Gurren Lagann style to me, it’s a little over the top, but not to the point it looks like an over-exaggerated Saturday morning cartoon. I loved the show this year and the beautiful animation art style was largely a part of why.

Best Story

  • Charlotte
  • Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?
  • Overlord
  • Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers – WINNER
  • School-Live!

When a story can have you screaming at your television for about the final 6-7 episodes for not revealing the traitor among the seven Braves and you’re still coming back as soon as you can watch the next episode, they’ve written a very engaging story. Even to the point that I hadn’t truly 100% guessed who it was, I had it narrowed down to a 50-50 chance and the correct person was one of them, but I never truly leaned towards that character. They always kept me guessing and that doesn’t happen often with me, I’m usually astute enough to figure things out before the very end.

Show I Should’ve Hated, But Loved

  • Bikini Warriors
  • Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!
  • Lovely Muuuuuuuco!
  • Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou – WINNER
  • Teekyu

When I first heard about this show, I had zero intention of watching it. I’ve seen a ton of art over the years featuring monster girls and they always bugged me. What can I say? I like my women fully humanoid. But when Monster Musume started on Crunchyroll, I curiously checked the screenshot for the episode and the animation was drawn beautifully. And I’m a sucker for good anime art so I turned it on. And I was immediately weirded out to the point I couldn’t stop watching it. Granted, once you got more characters in there to shorten the amount of Miia “DARLING!!!”s, it got far easier to watch. And like I said in my Anime Spotlight on the show, it does far more good things than a harem anime about monster girls had any business doing.

LOL! Moment of the Year

  • Peanut butter tentacle rape [Yes, I thought it was fucking hilarious] (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma)
  • Umaru’s entire setup for an anime marathon, aka the Potato/Cola scene (Himouto! Umaru-Chan)
  • Muco’s reaction to Komatsu and herself in their rain gear (Lovely Muuuuuuuco!)
  • How Papi plays Wii Sports/Suu joining in (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou)
  • Kuon peeping on Haku (Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen) – WINNER

It was already refreshing enough to have a scene in an anime where a girl was peeping on a guy, but the way Kuon handles her peeping session on Haku is just hysterical. Either Kuon’s never seen a boy naked before or Haku was packing, because once she saw whatever she saw, her reactions were nothing short of terror, fear and a ton of shivering. And she was drawn so well for that scene, it just added to how funny it ended up being.

HOLY SHIT! Moment of the Year

  • *SPOILERS* (Charlotte)
  • My mouth watering after every single food dish and I don’t even like fish! (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma)
  • *SPOILERS* (Overlord)
  • *SPOILERS* (School-Live!)
  • *SPOILERS* (Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist) – WINNER

At no point did I anticipate what we saw during that moment in Shimoneta. From the moment it started to the moment it ended was what seemed like an endless barrage of “WTF!”, “Holy shit!”, “Sweet Jesus!” and the ending with a massive amount of laughing. The other four moments featured some really violent shit…and then some delicious food, but Shimoneta’s nominee and now winner is a scene that perfectly encapsulates this award and it’s a scene that will probably be etched into my memory for an eternity. Holy fucking shit…

Best Couple

  • Adlet Myer/Fremy Speeddraw (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)
  • Hayato Izumi/Ui Wakana (My Wife is the Student Council President)
  • Ikki Kurogane/Stella Vermilion (Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry) – WINNERS
  • Nagisa Kiryu/Mizuki Sera (Classroom ☆ Crisis)
  • Yuu Otosaka/Nao Tomori (Charlotte)

After all, I did write an article about Ikki/Stella after watching the first half of the series. It’s not very often in a harem-style anime that not only does a couple form involving the guy everyone’s going after, but so quickly in the series. They’re also the one couple I’ve seen this year that felt realistic, genuine and actual issues between a newly started couple would actually have. They’re absolutely adorable to watch.

Best Female Character

  • Ayame Kajou (Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist)
  • Kuon (Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen) – WINNER
  • Nagisa Aizawa (Actually, I Am)
  • Umaru Doma (Himouto! Umaru-Chan)
  • Yuki Takeya (School-Live!)

There were so many good choices too from many different backgrounds and personalities. But for this award, I had to go with the character that displayed the best personality without being a part of a series where every action they have is over-exaggerated. Kuon is an absolute sweetheart, has her moments where she’s a strong female character, others where you laugh with her and others where honestly, you wish she was real, she’d be an absolute treat to be around.

Best Male Character

  • Adlet Myer (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)
  • Ainz Ooal Gown (Overlord)
  • Bell Cranel (Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?)
  • Soma Yukihira (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma) – WINNER
  • Yuu Otosaka (Charlotte)

There! Are you happy now! I finally gave Food Wars a positive award! There were some pretty good guys this year in anime, but none as enjoyable to watch as Soma. His mixture of a badass chef, mixed with well…he’s like the cooking version of Dragon Ball Z’s Goku. He’s an absolute goof the majority of the time, but when you turn that switch on, there’s no stopping him.

Show of the Year

  • Actually, I Am – WINNER
  • GATE: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri
  • Himouto! Umaru-Chan
  • Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend
  • Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist

To give this award out my criteria could’ve been far bigger. I could’ve based it on overall laughs, art style, the entire cast of characters, the music, everything you could possibly think of. But instead I based it on one piece of criteria: What show out of these five nominees did I actively refresh Crunchyroll to get the next episode the most? And the answer was Actually, I Am.

There’s no show this year I spent more time on my couch doing fuck all while waiting for the next episode to pop up when it was that day of the week. The show is the best mixture of laughs, adorable moments and also moments of real emotional consequences. The cast of characters for a harem anime aren’t all over the place trying to pull Asahi towards them. It’s a two-girl race essentially the whole show and those two have their own feelings about it while the remaining female cast act more as bridges for the two still in the race. It’s a series that while is bonkers, still takes itself and its story very seriously by the very end and it kept me very engaged from about Episode 3 onwards. An incredible watch for me this year.

And that’s been the 2015 Radical Anime Awards, hope you enjoyed it! If there’s a different pick from the list you would’ve done, or maybe I missed something, let me know down in the comments section below!
