2015 Radical Gaming Awards

AwardsGaming

2015 was a pretty decent year in gaming for me. I found a number of games that definitely grabbed my attention, while some not so much.

Now with these awards I’m giving out, please take into consideration the following: I do not own an Xbox One and I don’t play handheld/mobile games much at all anymore. So pretty much all my nominees and winners this year will be either games I played on the PS4, PC, or WiiU. And also remember, I don’t play every single game out there and I don’t have a team next to me who can play the games I’ve missed. So whatever is on this list (unless it applies otherwise) are games I’ve actually played, I can’t give awards to games I have not played, simple as that.

So keep in mind that because this awards show has content that is miles more expensive than the content of the other award shows, that there will be far less variety of the nominees. That’s just a product of the fact I have only so much time in the day to play games and only so much money to spend.

Also note that I’ll be putting what version of the game I played next to the name of the game for each nominee.

So for starters, let’s go with the shit stuff this year!

Most Disappointing Game

  • J-Stars Victory Vs+ (PS4)
  • NHL 16 (PS4)
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 (PS4) – WINNER

It was a clear cash grab before Activision’s license on the series finally ran out. The game is full of bugs, glitches and is just a pile of shit overall. I’m glad I didn’t purchase this game and instead played it via a friend. I would’ve blown a fucking gasket if I paid good money for this.

WTF! Moment of the Year

  • Every single Sparrow race (Destiny: The Taken King)
  • The millions of glitches in it (Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5)
  • Riddler Races (Batman: Arkham Knight) – WINNER

That fucking wall driving section where I kept fucking falling into the fucking water below. Fuck that fucking stupid fucking piece of fucking shit fucking minigame. In all seriousness though, fuck the Riddler Races, they fucking pissed me off beyond all compare. Fuck!

Worst Character

  • Elphelt Valentine (Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-)
  • Eris Morn (Destiny: The Taken King) – WINNER
  • Rain (Mortal Kombat X)

Bitch gave me raisins for Halloween.

Worst Game of the Year

  • J-Stars Victory Vs+ (PS4)
  • Omega Quintet (PS4)
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 (PS4) – WINNER

No doubt on this one. Again, super glad I did not buy this game myself, but god damn was this game ever bad. I’m usually good at avoiding the purchase (at least at full price) of a really shitty game and this year was exactly that. So thankfully this year’s Worst Game of the Year is one I didn’t have to spend money on. It certainly lightens the blow.

And now with the bad stuff out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff!

Best Design

  • Destiny: The Taken King (PS4)
  • Final Fantasy XV Demo (PS4)
  • Grow Home (PS4)
  • Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (PS4)
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4) – WINNER

Tough not to give Witcher 3 this one. The world is absolutely gorgeous, the character design, absolutely gorgeous, everything about this game is just beautiful as hell. And no, the massive amounts of nudity and sex in this game did not influence this decision, they didn’t need to. That’s how beautiful this game is.

Best Soundtrack

  • Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4)
  • Destiny: The Taken King (PS4)
  • Fallout 4 (PS4)
  • Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (PS4) – WINNER
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4)

Look, it’s a badass fighting game that features badass heavy metal tracks. I don’t care how big an orchestra you bring into your game’s soundtrack, I don’t care what major name in music you bring in to sing songs for the game, you cannot beat music that would require a mosh pit at all times. At least for me, heavy metal music trumps all.

Best Story

  • Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (PS4)
  • Destiny: The Taken King (PS4)
  • Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (PS4)
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4) – WINNER

Just how crazy, horrifying and “you can’t put it down” the Bloody Baron quest alone is could win this award. But the rest of the story is good on its own two legs as well. Every game on this list has moments where it’s dull and Witcher 3 is no exception. But for a game that constantly frustrated me (I’m bad with the battle mechanics), the story was so strong that it kept me going as if nothing was wrong at all. I just had to save my game every 5 minutes to make sure I wouldn’t lose any progress. I died a lot!

Most Surprisingly Good Game

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (PS4)
  • Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (Mobile)
  • Grow Home (PS4)
  • Rocket League (PS4)
  • Super Mega Baseball (PS4) – WINNER

You could easily make a case for Rocket League, but I was not as surprised how good it was as I was with Super Mega Baseball. When most sports games are pretty crap and arcade sports are usually even worse, this game on the other hand handled it pretty well. It’s disappointing that there was no online mode, but hopefully if a second game in this series comes out we’ll see that, because the art style and the gameplay are a great mixture and it was a fun game to play. Got way more games played with this one than MLB 15 The Show this year.

LOL! Moment of the Year

  • Anything Cayde-6 says (Destiny: The Taken King) – WINNER
  • Cassie Cage X-Ray attack (Mortal Kombat X)
  • Drunken Shani romance scene (The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone)
  • The many Joker, well…jokes (Batman: Arkham Knight)
  • Ramlethal and Sin interactions in Story Mode (Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-)

Nathan Fillion as Cayde-6 was essentially non-existent in vanilla Destiny. In the newest expansion, The Taken King, he is in full Nathan Fillion snarkyness mode and it is fucking fantastic. Lines like “Eris, get your rock off my map.”, “What? You broke my stealth drive?!” and “Wait, hold on. Eris is going on about breaking the necrotic…Ugh just shoot it!” are just hysterical and makes the actually decent storyline ten times better when you’re laughing along with it. Hopefully Bungie can keep this up, not just with Cayde-6, but bringing in more characters as worthy to talk about without saying the words “boring” or “what the fuck are they talking about?!”.

HOLY SHIT! Moment of the Year

  • Bloody Baron quest (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) – WINNER
  • Getting your limbs ripped off by robots (Call of Duty: Black Ops 3)
  • Giant Oryx in the King’s Fall raid for the first time (Destiny: The Taken King)
  • Joker inside Batman’s mind (Batman: Arkham Knight)
  • *SPOILERS* (Mortal Kombat X)

I’d love not to spoil this quest but I can’t properly explain the reasoning for this choice without saying the following: Botchlings. That is all.

Best Sports/Racing Game

  • Rocket League (PS4) – WINNER
  • Super Mega Baseball (PS4)
  • WWE 2K16 (PS4)

No question on this one, a game that may be on a lot of people’s Game of the Year lists, Rocket League for most came out of nowhere. It’s a real crime to that it came out for free on PS4, but then again it added so much extra advertising for the game, I’m sure they’ve still made a ton of money of it. I’m sure I’m not the only one who paid for the DLC just because of how good the game is, I felt guilty getting that game for free. It’s that good.

Best Fighting Game

  • Dragonball Xenoverse (PS4)
  • Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (PS4) – WINNER
  • Mortal Kombat X (PS4)

Not a whole lot I played this year in terms of fighting games, but Guilty Gear returning onto the scene was an easy pick for me. With a surprisingly well-done Story Mode (yes, I know there’s no gameplay, it’s like watching an anime series) and returning to the badass 2D fighting insanity that it used to be, I was so happy to see Guilty Gear back. And with some awesome new characters to boot.

Best Role-Playing Game

  • Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (Mobile)
  • Final Fantasy Type-0 HD (PS4)
  • Final Fantasy XV Demo (PS4) – WINNER

I played pretty much zero JRPGs this year, haven’t had a lot of time away from Destiny to do it. But because of the XV Episode Duscae demo, you can be sure I’ll make some time for the full release when it finally comes out. As Square Enix is known for, the game is absolutely gorgeous and the new battle system’s actually really interesting, I can’t wait to test the limits of it.

Best Action/Adventure Game

  • Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4)
  • Grow Home (PS4)
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4) – WINNER

Another easy choice given the games I played this year. I clocked in far more hours into that game than I should have, but goddamn did I enjoy every moment of it.

Best Shooter Game

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (PS4)
  • Destiny: The Taken King (PS4) – WINNER
  • Fallout 4 (PC)

I know it’s an expansion but there nothing shooter-related that was released this year that surprised me more and has gotten me more enjoyment out of it than The Taken King.

Best Female Character

  • Barbara Gordon (Batman: Arkham Knight)
  • Ciri (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) – WINNER
  • D’Vorah (Mortal Kombat X)
  • Female Protagonist (Call of Duty: Black Ops 3)
  • Ramlethal Valentine (Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-)

When I can pick a character in a game who gets totally naked in it and I don’t think twice about any sexist remarks coming back at me for picking her, you know she’s a wonderful character. Ciri is just pure beauty, can kick all kinds of ass and isn’t an abnormal personality, she’s not super serious, super hyper, super anything. She’s normal, you can believe her as a real person. She just happens to walk through worlds at a time. Y’know…normal…

Best Male Character

  • Cayde-6 (Destiny: The Taken King) – WINNER
  • Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt)
  • John Taylor (Call of Duty: Black Ops 3)
  • The Joker (Batman: Arkham Knight)
  • Nick Valentine (Fallout 4)

Again, I know it’s an expansion, but fuck it, Nathan Fillion kicked all kinds of ass in this expansion. There’s no character this year I enjoyed listening to more than Cayde-6 and I anticipate in the next expansion if he has any role at all in it, will very much be the same result.

Best Indie Game

  • Armello (PS4)
  • Duck Game (PC)
  • Grow Home (PS4)
  • Rocket League (PS4) – WINNER
  • Super Mega Baseball (PS4)

So many good choices this year, but Rocket League still wins by a landslide. It’s such a simple concept, yet it works so well mechanically, looks visually amazing and is addictive as fuck to play. Remarkable job these guys did with Rocket League.

Game of the Year

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (PS4)
  • Destiny: The Taken King (PS4)
  • Fallout 4 (PC)
  • Rocket League (PS4)
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4) – WINNER

As much as I’d love to be an ass and give the award to Destiny’s expansion, the fact that Witcher 3 took me away from Destiny for almost an entire month is a feat like no other this entire year. The game (while sometimes mechanically frustrating) for me was still addictive as all hell, the story was incredibly well-written, the characters were voice acted perfectly and the world was just breathtaking to walk through. More than worthy of the GOTY award this year.

And that’s been the 2015 Radical Gaming Awards, hope you enjoyed it! If there’s a different pick from the list you would’ve done, or maybe I missed something, let me know down in the comments section below!
