Waifu, FWB or One-Night Stand? #19

It’s week #19 of Waifu, Friend With Benefits or One-Night Stand!

For those new to the article, this is not a post that talks about the “fuckability” of three randomly selected female characters from various anime and video games. I’m already attracted to them, it’s to be implied that I would share a bed with them already. What this article is meant to do, is go through their personalities, interests, anything pertinent to answering the question if they’re a one-time only, a friend that I might accept the occasional booty call from, or someone I would absolutely spend the rest of my life with.

So without further to do, let’s meet this week’s contestants!

Kicking off this week is quite possibly one of the most minor characters this list will ever have on it, so her background will be quite short. But for those familiar with Persona 3, you’ll know about Chihiro, the student council treasurer that is one of the many social links you can have and of course one of the many girls you can confess to (or all of them, at your own peril).

Chihiro at the very beginning is extremely shy and very uncomfortable around men. It’s because of the main character that she’s able to overcome her fears and lack of confidence and become a much stronger girl, able to stand up for herself. As a great callback to the third installment as well, in Persona 4 she actually shows up again, this time the student council president of Gekkoukan High, now in her senior year. She’s definitely changed even further, her confidence in full swing, she has an aura of elegance now, but she still requires a little help with public speaking, something the president before her Mitsuru helped her with.

That’s all I got, so let’s make the call on Chihiro:

Right off the bat, Chihiro was actually my first waifu choice when I played Persona 3. Think about that for a second, I didn’t immediately go for either Yukari, Mitsuru or Fuuka, the girls that I see 90% of the time, I decided upon the first meeting with Chihiro, a girl I would spent 2% of the game with, that she was the best option. Chihiro is the girl that felt the most real, her shyness coupled with her inability to speak up in fear of eliciting a negative reaction, I can easily associate with that. So when she slowly began to get over these things, she morphs into a very beautiful-minded young woman, a girl you want to marry, not a girl where your first thought becomes bed-related.

Another very minor character, the mother of Shuffle! main character Asa Shigure, Ama is a prime example of Japan finding ridiculous ways to have a girl who looks like she’s in her early 20s, yet is the mother of a teenager. Ama is a Demon, a race in an alternate world. After volunteering for an experiment that resulted in her magical powers destroying the lab and teleporting her to Earth, she was nursed back to health by a human male, who in turn she fell in love with and bore a child with him, that being Asa.

For someone who’s supposed to be a mother figure in the series, Ama actually comes off more like a best friend and/or roommate of Asa’s, she’s overly cheerful, constantly joking around with people, usually at her daughter’s expense. She comes off very free-spirited and open to everything. This could be a by-product from years later after her husband tragically passed away, but there’s really no way of knowing, we never truly learn if Ama was the same or different before he passed. But there definitely is an open-ness to her when well…in the 18+ visual novel not only is she “open for business”, but uh…she “presents” her daughter to the MC as well.

Ahem…so asides from that, here’s my call on Ama:

From the little time I’ve spent with any content containing Ama and her light-hearted personality, I think that while I’d enjoy myself hanging around with her, she might be a little too over-the-top for me, given I only know this side of her and there’s no way of knowing if a calmer, loving side exists to the person she’s in a relationship with. But there’s no way I’d push myself away from her either, so Ama gets the middle-ground here.

Holy hell I haven’t played the entire Xenosaga series, but from the little I know alone, I know that there is a ton of stuff to go through when it comes to Shion. I’ll try to keep it brief, but uh…there is a ton. So here goes.

When we’re first introduced to Shion, she’s really the kind of girl that I believe needs to exist as a main character more often in games and anime. She’s super intelligent, a leader of the research group she works with. She’s both very nice and very strict with those she works with, the person you know will stand up and protect her friends and colleagues, but at the same time will bring the hammer down when it needs to be brought down. There’s a strong, independent (albeit stubborn too) young woman who wants to help whoever she can and wants to change the world to how she wants it to be, not willing to just sit back and accept the world as it is.

However…HOLY SHIT is there a lot of mental trauma going on with this girl! The second things start going to hell in the first game, we see that this strong, independent woman is actually an extremely damaged and tormented woman, haunted by a series of traumatic events and deaths of many people close to her, noting that the majority of those who get close to her end up dying and leaving her alone again. The sheer list of friends and loved ones that have died in front of her are staggering and in horrifying ways as well. She’s clearly suffering from PTSD, a heavy amount of depression and many other psychological disorders. Even worse, she doesn’t share her pain and shoulders the burden alone, trying to put on a happy face, but in reality is hiding an insane amount of negative emotions and memories.

I could go further on with this, but my decision’s already pretty clear from this, so let’s hop to it!

I’m aware it’s not nice to say this about someone, but holy shit! Shion is damaged goods and then some, there is way too much to overcome with her mental disorders, her outbursts, her fears, there’s way too much to try and fix while in any sort of relationship with this girl. In her current state, Shion needs beyond a ton of help and having her start another relationship is not going to help with that. Now obviously in the context of things, who knows if a “one-night stand” per se isn’t the best idea with a girl like her, but because I’m only allotted three options, this is the one that causes the least amount of pain for her, as there’s no real emotional connection made. I think the calm, happy Shion is an amazing girl and I would easily take her as my wife if that was solely who she was. But with all the psychological trauma (and the odds that I’ll die too if I’m with her for too long), it’s just too much to ask of me.

So that’s this week’s edition of Waifu, FWB, or One-Night Stand, hope you enjoyed it! Leave any comments you’ve got below, whether it’s your own choices between the three or maybe I’m missing something that could’ve turned the tide on my decision with any one of these girls.
