2016 Fall Anime Preview

So we are just a couple weeks away from the start of the 2016 fall anime season, so before we get to the end of this current season, it’s time for me to preview all the anime listed to air during this season and see where my interest is at for each of them.

Before we get started however, I’m laying down a few ground rules:

  • If a show is a second season or further and I haven’t either watched the anime yet or dropped the previous season, I will not be previewing those shows.
  • I will try to preview as many as I can, but there may be a couple where the synopsis may turn me off before even clicking the link to the trailer.
  • Please understand that these trailers are all in Japanese and usually don’t come with subtitles, so a lot of what I talk about is more what I see and perceive rather than what’s actually being said and going on in the trailer.
  • Also understand that I am deciding on shows based on my own personal tastes. Obviously there will be shows you think are at the top of your list, but they don’t interest me and vice-versa
  • At the end of each preview I will give the show a “Yay” or “Nay”. Should be self-explanatory as to which one means I’ll be watching those shows
  • And for any show that does get previewed on this list, even if I give it the go-ahead, if it’s not on Crunchyroll or Funimation where I can easily access it on my PS4 (which makes my screencaps really easy too), I will not watch it and have it on my weekly reviews. I’m aware there are other routes, but my time is limited and I also don’t like resorting to torrents and such.

Anyways, let’s get this show on the road!

3-gatsu no Lion (March Comes in Like a Lion)

SYNOPSIS

Rei Kiriyama is a 17-year-old boy who recently started living alone, financed by his salary as a professional Shogi player. Despite his independence, however, he’s yet to mature emotionally, and his problems continue to haunt him in his daily life. His relationship with his adoptive family is strained, and he has difficulties interacting with his fellow high school students. Meanwhile, his professional career has entered a slump. Burdened with the heavy expectations placed on him as the fifth to become pro in middle school, his wins and losses are fluctuating as his record and progression into the ranks begin to stagnate.

Acquainted with Rei are the three Kawamoto sisters: Akari, Hinata, and Momo. Unlike Rei, they live happily in their modest home, which they warmly welcome Rei into as if he were one of their own. Despite his reservations about becoming too close to the family, he frequently visits, interacting with them and receiving the kind of care and affection he never quite had while under his foster home.

This is the story of Rei’s triumphs and failures, relationships new and old, and his growth as a person.

THOUGHTS – YAY

It’s a tough one to judge because I don’t like from the main concept that it’s all that interesting and from the majority of what I said in the video, it looks rather boring. However, the feeling I’m getting from this show is very reminiscent of how I looked at Amanchu! and it ended up being one of my favourites from this last season. So because of that event alone, I’m going to give it a shot, but I’m fully expecting to drop it after Week 1.

Lastly, there is Captain Sekizan, who has overwhelming powers, but keeps his cards close to his chest. THOUGHTS – NAY

I know why so many people are curious about this show. Just Google Image Search this show and you’ll find that the men in this show may have the best butts in all of anime, including the girls! But from the video, it just looks like another sports anime and none of them have ever grabbed my attention, it’s just not my cup of tea. Sorry ladies, but this one ain’t for me, but you’re more than welcome to go enjoy all the boy butts.

Bernard-jou Iwaku.

(No video preview)

SYNOPSIS

The short gag manga is about the love of famous works of literature. It follows Sawako “Miss Bernard” Machida, a lazy girl who wants to be a well-read person — but does not actually read much. The manga recounts the conversations between “Miss Bernard” and her bookworm friends about the Bible, The Tale of the Heike, Guns, Germs, and Steel, The Door into Summer, The Great Passage, Fermat’s Last Theorem, and more masterpieces that she has not necessarily read.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

It sounds like it’ll be a short show so I may not cover it, since I don’t do shows under 5 minutes on my weekly anime posts, but anytime a show comes out and the main character is a lazy fuck in a comedy anime, I’m in.

Bloodivores

(No video preview)

SYNOPSIS

60 years ago, a strange case of insomnia struck the population, forcing them to stay awake for more than a full week. The victims, completely sleep deprived, all went mad. To cure this illness, a new medicine was produced, but the side effects turned the patients into vampires. Humanity went to war against this new species and triumphed, but some of the vampires managed to survive. Born from a Human and a Vampire, the main character Mi Liu, “The Child of Hope”, is to represent the new hope that will connect the two species. Ringleader of a bank robbery, Mi Liu is arrested and transferred to a special prison of the National Defense Agency that monitors Vampires. Trying to break free with Anji, Mi Liu is attacked by strange monsters and he finds out that the prison location corresponds to the birthplace of Vampires, the old capital “Blue Town.” Why are Vampires trapped in Blue Town? What are those strange monsters attacking them? Our heroes must fight to solve those mysteries.

(Source: Emon via Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

Unlike Servamp which ended up being a shitty action comedy vampire show, Bloodivores sounds a lot more like an action mystery vampire anime which has my attention a little more. Unfortunately at this time not all the information on the show has come out yet, but the plot synopsis has my attention and the cover art for the show looks pretty nice so at the very least, there’s a foundation here.

Brave Witches

SYNOPSIS

In September 1944, allied forces led by the 501st Joint Fighter Wing “Strike Witches” successfully eliminate the Neuroi threat from the skies of the Republic of Gallia, thus ensuring the security of western Europe. Taking advantage of this victory, allied forces begin a full-fledged push toward central and eastern Europe. From a base in Petersburg in the Empire of Orussia, the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing “Brave Witches,” upon whom mankind has placed its hopes, flies with courage in the cold skies of eastern Europe.

(Source: MAL News)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I don’t give a shit about how people feel about the Strike Witches series, I fucking adored it! So what if it’s a glorifying ecchi show, the concept is still super cool, the action sequences are pretty good and the diverse cast of characters makes the show very unique. So to have an entirely new set of characters (despite the fact a few of them look like copies of Strike Witches characters) in a new setting more than has my attention. I’m ready to return to the battle against the Neuroi in a fantasy World War II-era world where apparently girls don’t wear pants.

Bubuki Buranki: Hoshi no Kyojin (Season 2)

SYNOPSIS

The plot synopsis I have seen is basically the summary of last season, so on my own I’ll summarize what I think will happen. The show will continue after Season 1, where Azuma and company manage to repel the various threats on Treasure Island and protecting the remaining Buranki (mechs) there. The expectation I have is that they will continue this fight against the American, Russian and whatever new Buranki team that Azuma’s sister is a part of. I would also anticipate Reoko and company to continue playing along, but I don’t believe they will be the central villains this time around.

THOUGHTS – YAY

This show was a sleeper hit for me when the first season was out, so I fully expect this one to do the same for me. As I’ve said before, the animation style of this show is one of the coolest things about it, not to mention the amazingly designed diverse set of characters, no one feels similar to someone else, you can tell everyone apart. The only thing that worries me is that towards the end of Season 1, they got a little too crazy and made the sheer amount of new characters cause the show to get a little dizzying at times. I’m hoping that they’re able to properly establish everyone this time and make sense of it all, especially with the idea that Azuma’s sister Kaoruko is going to be fighting him, they’re going to need a pretty good reason for that.

Bungo Stray Dogs Season 2

SYNOPSIS

Another case where the synopsis pretty much just summarizes Season 1. So the fight against the Port Mafia and other faction that came at the end of the first season (and I can’t remember the name of) will continue on with Atsushi and the gang of supernatural misfit detectives he works with. I’m unsure if the current situation will lead to this being the end of the show, but it’s plausible that this could be the final season given how they could use the 12 episodes they have to full-on fighting everyone.

THOUGHTS – YAY

Loved this show’s first season, so it’s a no-brainer to keep things going. I miss characters like Atsushi, Dazai and of course the super adorable crepe lover, Kyouka. The animation style, in particular the facial expressions are just so damn good and funny, even when the show’s story is meh at best, the animation and comedy keeps you involved. Can’t wait to get back into this show.

Cheating Craft

(External site: http://www.bilibili.com/video/av5546671/)

SYNOPSIS

University Exams are one of the most influential factors in one’s early life. Depending on the results, a fantastic, high class, honorable life may await you. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you may be left only leftovers. In this type of battlefield atmosphere, students are always doing their best to “evolve” and survive. “Learning Types” are students who have studied hard their whole lives and legitimately memorized everything they have studied, while “Cheating types” are those who, as the name suggests, only managed to climb the educational ladder by cheating. Though sometimes they must cooperate with each other, there is a great rivalry between the two types. How will the hero “Mumei”, a C Type, followed by the heroin “Koi” a L-Type, struggle in those tests. Now a new battle, one beyond imagination, is about to begin.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

This looks so much like your average school fighting anime where the main character slowly gets better and better and gets to the top of the rankings, that it completely turned me off the second I started watching the video. It looks so devoid of personality too, like it’s just trying to take from all the shows before it that were successful and mix them all together in hopes of creating a hit anime. Nope! Not for me.

Drifters

SYNOPSIS

Shimazu Toyohisa, while involved in the Battle of Sekigahara, manages to mortally wound Ii Naomasa, but is critically wounded in the process. As he walks from the field wounded and bleeding, Toyohisa finds himself transported to a corridor of doors where a bespectacled man at a desk waits for him. This man, Murasaki, sends Toyohisa into the nearest door where he wakes up in another world. There, Toyohisa meets other great warriors like him who have been transported as well, to be part of a group known as Drifters.

This world contains both native humans and a number of fantastical races, including elves, dwarves, and hobbits. However, the world is at war, with the humans waging a losing war against another group of great warriors, the Ends, who wish to take over the world and kill all the Drifters. Under the Ends’ command are many terrible creatures, including dragons, which they use to destroy everything in their wake. At the start of the series, the Ends’ army has control of the northern part of the continent and is currently trying to invade the south through a pivotal fortress at the northernmost tip of a nation called Carneades. Meanwhile, the Octobrist Organization, a group of human magicians native to this world, attempt to bring together the many individual Drifters to save their world from the brutal Ends.

THOUGHTS – YAY!!!

Holy shit! It’s fantasy-era Hellsing anime! Seriously, the manga was done by Kouta Hirano who did Hellsing. Also, of all people NBC Universal got a hold of this one and the only other show I’ve watched of theirs was And You Thought There is Never a Girl Online, which was fantastic! I’m never good on violence, but Hellsing was the exception to that rule and this is looking so similar to that. I am beyond ready for this show, I was not expecting this to be what it was until I researched further and discovered that this indeed is a fantasy-era Hellsing anime. I cannot wait for this one!

Flip Flappers

SYNOPSIS

Many things in Pure Illusion will stand in the girls’ way on their search for the mysterious crystal called the “Shard of Mimi,” an item that is said to grant any wish. However, when the girls find themselves in danger, the Shard of Mimi shines, and they are able to transform.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I am fully prepared to drop this one after the first episode, but it’s just weird looking enough and the clip of the girl like…airboarding looked pretty cool, so my interest was piqued just enough to at the very least take a look at this show. It seems very magical girl like, which so far has failed to grab my attention, but who knows, maybe this one’ll be a sleeper hit for me. We’ll have to wait and see.

Fune wo Amu

SYNOPSIS

The publication of a new dictionary titled The Great Passage progresses. Mitsuya Majime, originally from publisher Genbu Shobo’s sales department, has been recruited by Kouhei Araki, a veteran editor of the dictionary department who is looking to retire soon. The dictionary department is known internally as the “money-eating insect,” but Mitsuya uses his perseverance and attachment to the words in order to become a great editor. Mitsuya, who has poor social skills, finds himself working with another man named Masashi Nishioka, who is able to express himself better.

(Source: MAL News)

THOUGHTS – NAY

What I got from the video is that the show looks really boring, not to mention the majority of the cast is male and for whatever reason (you can try to pull the feminist card on me), shows with pretty much all male characters don’t grab my attention ever, mostly because males in anime are usually boring characters. But yeah, zero interest in this show after watching trailers and reading the summary of the story.

Gakuen Handsome

(No video preview)

SYNOPSIS

The “school love story” is set at Baramon High School, a private boys’ school for the prefecture’s most elite. The protagonist transferred into the school and meets various major players on campus, such as the “outlaw teacher,” the soccer captain, and a childhood friend whom the protagonist has not seen in seven years. The school presents opportunities for friendship, love, and conflict. The tagline of the game is, “Whenever you exited the school gates, you were handsome.”

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

Yaoi harem, not interested. Also the art looks like garbage to me. Sorry ladies, but this is beyond my horizons and then some.

Girlish Number

SYNOPSIS

The story follows the lives of Chitose Karasuma, a college student who aspires to be an idol voice actress, and other young women in the industry.

(Source: Animation News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

Seems like your standard idol anime with a slice of life vibe to it, so there’s nothing in the previews that make me hate it, however like a lot of these shows, it’s very likely I won’t finish it, A Seiyu’s Life being the most recent attempt and lasting about 4 or 5 episodes before I was bored with it. Hopefully this show can do differently, I do like the character designs with this show, so there’s a little promise going in.

Hagane Orchestra

SYNOPSIS

There’s no summary given, but the anime is based off a smartphone RPG in Japan.

THOUGHTS – YAY

I don’t know what the fuck I just watched, but it’s so cheesy and over the top, I love it. That’s all I really have to say about it.

Idol Memories

SYNOPSIS

In the near future where Idols are active in the space of virtual reality, two units from the Shiritsu Kanon Gakuen, which are currently ranking down, are aiming for the top of idol league! Who will be getting the honorable tiara?

(Source: MyAnimeList News)

THOUGHTS – YAY

The same thing I said about Girlish Number applies here, although this idol anime is more futuristic so who knows, maybe that’s intriguing enough to make me stick with it. But based on the preview I saw, I’m getting the feeling that this one won’t grab me, but who knows, maybe I’m just being pessimistic here.

Keijo!!!!!!!!

SYNOPSIS

Kaminashi Nozomi (17) is an exceptional gymnast. So much so that colleges with some of the best gymnastic programs are trying to recruit her. Unfortunately for them, she has other plans. Due to her family being extremely poor, money is everything to her. That’s why she wants to step into the world of “Keijo.” “Keijo” is a type of gambling sport where girls stand on a small floating platform and compete against one another. The aim is to push the other contestant off of the platform into the water, but they are only allowed to use their butt or breasts to push the others off. Will Nozomi be able to compete in the intense world of “Keijo” and bring wealth and fortune for her family?

(Source: MangaHelpers)

THOUGHTS – YAY

You know that for something so stupid, I have to watch it, right? But this will be a show that could be either the best thing ever or the dumbest thing ever, I don’t think there’s any gray area here. The show will either be so silly it’s amazing, or so dumb that it’s unwatchable. We’ll just have to wait and see which one that is.

Kiitarou Shounen no Youkai Enikki

(No video preview)

SYNOPSIS

This is the visual diary of Kiitarou’s experience with youkai. He’s a boy with a very strong spirit sense, but when he entered a forbidden storehouse, he was kicked out of his home. He soon found a new place to live, where he met a zashiki warashi (house spirit) named Suzu. He and Suzu soon began to attract all kinds of spirit creatures, starting with a nurikabe (appears as a wall that impedes travelers) and mokumokuren (appears as eyes in a torn paper wall). What kind of folkloric creature will he meet next?

(Source: Baka-Updates)

THOUGHTS – YAY

After a show like Mononokean, I’m now a little more interested in shows dealing with the spirit world and yokai, so based on that alone I’m willing to give this one a shot. That and from the poster, it almost looks like the show is a yokai harem anime, which if that’s the case, I gotta see how this fucking mess ends up being like!

Long Riders!

SYNOPSIS

The manga follows Ami Kurata, a first year college student with no special qualities. One day she happens to notice someone riding a folding bike, immediately falls in love with it, and uses all her savings to buy one. She eventually gets introduced to the world of long-distance bicycling and road racer bikes, and she forms a cycling team called Fortuna with four other female college students from the same school. Their goal is to ride in a “brevet” or long-distance event called “Fresh.”

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

Another NBC Universal show and this one almost reminds of a slightly toned down Bakuon with bicycles instead of motorcycles. So I’m definitely a little curious about the show, but I have my suspicions that this one won’t quite live up to my expectations. Either way, it’s worth a look for me.

Luger Code 1951

SYNOPSIS

Grand Prize winner of the Shonen Jump + × Animax Anime Scenario Award.

The story centers around the young linguistic genius and university professor Testa. He is introduced by his senior, Sergeant Rossa, to the Allied Cryptanalysis Department. There, he is tasked to break the enemy werewolves’ code, which the werewolves are using to encrypt their radio transmissions. Testa is astounded, as the only sound the encrypted code produces is the howling of a wolf. His research yields no results, and he resolves to capture a live werewolf for better cryptanalysis. After exhausting all possible means, he finally finds a female werewolf, Yonaga.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

I’m so turned off by the word ‘werewolf’ that the second I read that in the synopsis, the only show that might’ve pulled me out of it is if the Drifters video was in that spot. But honestly, this show might actually be really good, but my biases are kicking in here and telling me to back the fuck away from it.

Magic-Kyun! Resistance

(Source: official website via Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

Reverse harem, looks way too cheesy and clearly marketed to a female audience. Yeah…I’m way out on this one.

Nanbaka

SYNOPSIS

The series focuses on Jyugo, Uno, Nico, and Rock, four young prisoners at a unique prison where inmates are divided into groups and assigned numbers. They comprise group 13 and, despite the circumstances, take every opportunity to have fun, much to the chagrin of their guard Hajime. However, Jyugo’s leisurely life is upset when he learns there is more to his past than he remembers…

THOUGHTS – YAY

Remember what I said about not getting my interest piqued by male-dominant shows? Yeah fuck that, this looks so stupid and funny that I have to watch this one. Not only that, but holy shit what were the artists of this show on when they designed these characters?! Holy fucking hell it looks like someone tripped over while holding 10 different colours of paints and they all splashed onto the canvas. My eyes! My eyes!!!

Occultic;Nine

(External site: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4ogz5g)

SYNOPSIS

The “paranormal science” story follows nine idiosyncratic individuals, linked by the “Chōjō Kagaku Kirikiri Basara” occult summary blog run by 17-year-old second-year high school student Yūta Gamon. Little incongruities that occur around these nine eventually lead to a larger, unimaginable event that may alter what is considered common sense in this world.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

This was a tough one to decide on, because on one hand I feel like this show might be kind of fun, but then on the other hand I feel like this one’s gonna be really dark despite the fun exterior it’s showing thus far. And as the guy who really doesn’t deal well with dark themes and violence, this one’s a hard one for me to go for after watching that video.

Okusama ga Seito Kaichou!+!

SYNOPSIS

Another synopsis where it just references the first season. Basically, the show is a continuation of the romantic (and very ecchi) comedy between Ui and Hayato who are together in the student council but Hayato suddenly has his home invaded by the airheaded Ui who claims to be his wife, an arranged marriage set up by their parents. The show in a nutshell is an endless stream of sexual innuendo as Ui tries to court Hayato into becoming her husband, while he can’t keep himself out of trouble with other girls around him as well.

THOUGHTS – YAY

I absolutely adored this show in its first season, they were short 9-minute episodes and did their job well. Get in, sexual humour, over-the-top facial expressions and the odd nipple popping out, then get out. And all the characters are pretty unique and interesting so even though the show is pure ecchi, it’s still entertaining in other ways as well, though it’s definitely not for everyone.

Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume

SYNOPSIS

The story follows middle school students Koyori Tsumuzikaze and Agari Kamiya as they enter the world of girls’ middle school ping pong.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

It’s a stupid cheesy looking anime about tiny high school girls and ping-pong, how can I not be curious about this show?! Will it have staying power, that’s a harder question to answer, but at the very least the show is so random that I have to give it a first look.

Shuumatsu no Izetta

SYNOPSIS

In 1939, the imperialist nation of Germania launched a sudden invasion of its neighboring countries. This conflagration engulfed all of Europe in one fell swoop, and the era was dragged into the maelstrom of war. Then in 1940, Germania set its sights on Elystadt, a tiny principality blessed with breathtaking greenery and water in the Alps.

The story centers on Izetta (pictured right in image at right), a descendant of a clan of witches who had passed down mysterious powers for generations. She can cast these powers on anything she touches and manipulate it at will. Since she was little, she and her grandmother lived their lives on the road, traveling between European countries in order to hide these powers. The anime also centers on Fiine (pictured left), the sole daughter in line to succeed Rudolph III, the ruler of the Principality of Elystadt. From a young age she has been adored for her wisdom and kind heart by not only her retainers, but by all the citizens. Since her father has been stricken by illness, she has been busy preparing for Germania’s invasion in his stead.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

Man, what’s with all the shows liking having their stories set during World War II lately? Either way, the show looks like a World War II version of Alderamin on the Sky, which certainly has my interest thus far. It also takes a bit from Strike Witches with the whole clan of witches during World War II kind of concept, but a little more serious than Strike Witches. Will it be good? Who knows, but I’m certainly interested in seeing if it is or not.

Soul Buster

SYNOPSIS

An adaptation of author Bai Mao’s Chinese novel series based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

THOUGHTS – NAY

It looks too serious for me and anything based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novels really have never been able to grab my attention thus far, can’t imagine it starting now. Might be really good for those into this sort of thing, but for me I’ve got zero interest in this one.

Soushin Shoujo Matoi

SYNOPSIS

It is 2016. Matoi Sumeragi, a second-year junior high school student, works part-time as a shrine maiden at Tenman Shrine in the city of Kamaya. Ever since being separated from her mother in early childhood, Matoi has been entrusted to her grandparents on her father’s side, but three months ago, she finally began to live with her father Shingo. In those circumstances, she only wishes for a peaceful, normal life.

Her close friend and part-time workmate Yuma Kusanagi is part of the family of the shrine’s chief priest, and is a candidate to be the successor shrine maiden. For generations, her family has performed exorcisms of evil spirits. She invites Matoi to one of these exorcism ceremonies, a so-called “Divine Possession” that she will attempt.

One day, Matoi and Yuma walk from the school to the shrine as usual, but when they arrive, they are greeted by the shrine’s now damaged grounds, and Yuma’s parents have both collapsed from their wounds. Matoi’s father Shingo, a police detective, launches an investigation, and he comes upon a man who does not seem entirely sane: his only witness. When he holds down the man, Yuma begins the ritual of Divine Possession.

Something strange then happens, not with Yuma, but with Matoi. Matoi Sumeragi, who had only wanted a normal, peaceful life, takes the role of a god, and gains the power to banish evil spirits! To get her precious everyday life back, Matoi must conduct exorcisms!

(Source: official website via Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

Looks like a fantasy magical girl kind of anime, haven’t really found one that grabs my attention either and this one really does nothing to change that for me. Design-wise it looks pretty decent, but the summary doesn’t do anything to interest me.

Tiger Mask W

SYNOPSIS

In “The Tiger’s Hole,” the behind-the-scenes organization of the revived wresting world, two young wrestlers take a stand. One of those fighters has inherited the training facility and mask of a tiger that Naoto Itō left at the foot of Mount Fuji. The other fighter has been victorious at fierce competitions since entering The Tiger’s Hole, and has obtained the black Tiger Mask. A Tiger Mask that walks down the path of light, and a Tiger Mask that walks down the path of shadow. Neither of them have ever seen each other’s face… In the ring, the two are fated rivals, but their goals are the same: “Crush The Tiger’s Hole!”

(Source: official website via Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

Please let this be the professional wrestling anime I’ve always wanted, not the sexually central Wanna Be The Strongest In The World!!, I want Pro Wrestling: The Anime and if the show is centering around Japanese wrestling legend, Tiger Mask (who’s had four different iterations over the years), this may be the best chance we have at just that!

Trickster: Edogawa Ranpo “Shounen Tantei-dan” Yori

SYNOPSIS

It is the 2030s. The Boy Detectives Club gathers under Kogorō Akechi, the mysterious detective. The group solves cases great and small using their unique skills. One day, a member of the club, Kensuke Hanazaki, meets the boy Yoshio Kobayashi. Kobayashi’s body cannot die due to the effects of the “Unidentifiable Mist,” but he yearns for death, and shirks from contact with other people. Taking an interest in him, Hanazaki invites him to join the Boy Detectives Club. Their meeting is connected to the fate tying together Kogorō Akechi, and the era’s greatest villain, the Fiend With Twenty Faces.

(Source: official website via Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

This almost comes off like a less cheesy over-the-top version of Bungo Stray Dogs, which already has me curious. Upon viewing the video, the animation looks really good as well so the show’s certainly worth a look at for me.

Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari

SYNOPSIS

Souta Tawara is a web designer working in Tokyo. When he visits his family’s Udon place in his hometown Kagawa Prefecture, he discovers a young boy. Upon confronting the boy, Souta soon learns his secret and decides to quit his job in order to take care of the boy, Poko. The daily adventures of the two slowly enfold as Poco energetically navigates his way through Kagawa, the “Udon Kingdom,” along with Souta.

(Source: MyAnimeList)

THOUGHTS – YAY

It’s like if you took Sweetness & Lightning and just changed Tsumugi into a boy. I don’t know if this show will carry a similar style of storytelling as Sweetness, but after watching that show in the summer, I’m more than game for a second round if that’s what this show is.

ViVid Strike!

SYNOPSIS

There’s no synopsis available but the anime is from the same creator as Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.

THOUGHTS – YAY

There’s barely enough interest in this show to get me to watch it, as the show comes off very mainstream to me with it’s setting, style and the kind of story I’m sensing from what I watched in this video. But it’s not like there’s anything easily notable as bad from that video, so I can’t really justify saying no just yet. I just don’t expect this show to stay on my weekly posts for very long.

Yuri!!! on Ice

SYNOPSIS

The story revolves around Yuuri Katsuki, who carried all of Japan’s hopes on his shoulders to win at the Gran Prix Finale ice skating competition, but suffered a crushing defeat. He returns home to Kyushu and half feels like he wants to retire, and half feels like he wants to continue ice skating. With those mixed feelings swirling inside him, he confines himself inside his parents house. Suddenly the five-time consecutive world championship ice skater Victor Nikiforov appears before him, and along with him is Yuri Plisetsky, a young Russian figure skater who is already defeating his seniors. Victor and both Yuris take up the challenge on an unprecedented Gran Prix series.

THOUGHTS – NAY

A boys’ figure skating anime? Yeah…somehow I don’t think that’s up my alley…like at all. I can imagine female anime watchers being very interested in this show, but holy hell does this look like something I need to stay far away from.

And that’s it! So at this time, the total number of shows I’ll be watching at the start of the fall season will be…22!

We’ll have to wait and see if all 22 will be available on Crunchyroll and/or Funimation so that I can watch it. But fully expect after Week 1 for that number to be under 20, I’m becoming harsher and harsher with shows now because my time to watch anime every week is shrinking and shrinking. So for shows to last, they have to not just be okay, that’s not going to cut it anymore like it did especially in the Spring and Summer.

See you in October!

  1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on some of the upcoming shows. I still haven’t made any decisions about what I’m planning to watch so I’m enjoying seeing what other people are anticipating.
