Anime Spotlight: Bananya

01

Y’know sometimes the things that seem like they shouldn’t work together, the things that you shouldn’t be into…anime figures out how to make it work and make you love it.

Bananya is probably the best example of that, a show that was clearly designed for children and yet managed to not just appeal to me, but a massive number of adult anime watchers and created a market for itself that I am positive the producers of the show did not expect one bit.

There’s nothing to this show of note, aside from the insanity that is cats in bananas. The show is a 3-minute short, there’s no plot, there’s no character development, there’s nothing of real note here for those anticipating anything “complex”. It’s a show about cats in bananas doing random things that day. That’s it.

So why is it so appealing to so many people? Well this is the internet we’re talking about here, so a major checkbox has been ticked alone just from the inclusion of cats. Mix that with anime, okay you’ve already got the full attention of the internet. They’re cats in bananas, you say? Now the internet is prepared for an assembly line of memes, DeviantArt posts and pages of handcrafted products on Etsy. I’d love to tell you that there’s more to how this anime got so much attention and praise, but that’s the gist of it. It’s anime, it’s cats and they’re in bananas. It’s unfiltered adorable insanity.

For me personally, it’s just an adorable random anime short. It doesn’t take too much of my time, it’s a great show to watch with my girlfriend when I want to see her “D’awww!” over and over again. Actually, it’s also a great show to randomly play in front of a bunch of friends and watch them try to react to the madness on screen. I now have several options with my friends when it comes to anime, I have sexy insanity with Food Wars and Monster Musume, I was comedic insanity with FLCL and Azumanga Daioh, but now I can add adorable insanity to my list of options with Bananya. It’s fantastic!

If you haven’t taken a look at Bananya, I don’t blame you. Obviously at first glance, it looks and reads like a kids show and you’re not wrong. But if you don’t have an issue with cute things in anime, this is exactly the kind of anime you want to watch. It’s so freaking cute, not to mention random as fuck.

And for me, those are two of my favourite things when relating to anime. So for me, it’s a no-brainer to watch it. So get on it!
