Week #8 – Fall Anime 2016

Week #8 has arrived with this Fall anime season. What’s in store this week?!

As always I’m live reacting (though typing it out to be posted later) to each episode I watch and going over what happens in each episode with the occasional quip and joke here and there. So for those trying to avoid spoilers, this entire article is full of them!

Bubuki Buranki: Hoshi no Kyojin (Ep.8)

SYNOPSIS

It appears Laetitia’s Buranki got an upgrade, able to fly so high she can reach outer space. Meanwhile, Kaoruko’s been fighting her and defeats her pretty easily. The four limbs seek to protect her, while Kogane’s Righty-chan goes full-power, but she hates it cause it’s cuteness goes away. Justin reveals to the four that he knows exactly what Guy’s doing and doesn’t mind, as he plans to stab him in the back when the end comes (aka he’s gonna die soon). One of his members try and ignore the fight, but Guy’s research has allowed him the ability to control the limbs himself. Shuusaku and company save the kids before it’s too late and they retreat. Back with Kaoruko, the limbs keep on fighting, seeing that all four of them were bought by Laetitia’s father to be her limbs. It also seems Laetitia’s initial reasons for fighting were good, but Guy and her desire for immortality have changed her completely. Kaoruko eventually retreats and the four limbs are suddenly surrounded by Demokratian soldiers. Epizo and his crew are with Guy who asks him about Laetitia and reveals he’s removing her and her team from their Buranki. He then tells them to defeat two Burankis, including Oubu and he also wants him to kill Azuma. He finally reveals that only Reoko can truly have immortality, they’ve proven that no one else will be able to replicate this. Back with the main crew, Justin’s still on the attack, so Oubu comes into play. However, the limbs manage to break free and take the heart from him, causing them to separate and fall from the sky. Justin tells them that they will be killed like Maxim’s team but they will fight until the end. Back on the ship, the plan is to return to Japan and regroup until they’re ready to fight Guy for real. But they’re mostly concerned with Shuusaku being a father, especially Zetsubi for him nailing someone down before her. At the end, it appears Migiwa is visiting Guy, or at least that’s who I think it is.

THE GOOD

  • Kaoruko continuing to get better
  • Kogane and especially Shizuru are so good at stealing scenes

THE BAD

  • Guy was a really hate-able villain in the early episodes this season, now he’s just becoming more of a nuisance, again showing that killing the Russian squad was so pointless as the drama of it has pretty much passed now

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Bungo Stray Dogs (Ep.20)

SYNOPSIS

Kyouka saves Atsushi and runs off with him. She’s been hiding in the slums ever since that day. Atsushi wishes she stayed out of the fight, but the Agency is her home now and she wants to protect it, even if it means having to kill again. When the police shows up, freaking out about being captured so she nearly kills a policeman, before Atsushi runs off with her. However, the Guild is in waiting and MARK TWAIN IS A SNIPER!!! Oh! AND MOBY DICK IS AN AIRSHIP!!! They capture Atsushi and leave her behind, telling her she’s not cut out for helping and that she knows exactly what she’s good for. She breaks down, not wanting to be shown the light again. Meanwhile, Q wants to fight Lovecraft, who clearly breaks out full Cthulhu. Margaret (who I missed Akutagawa beating the shit out of in that one episode) is in critical condition and may never wake up and the pastor guy claims he’ll avenge this himself, which sets Francis off, demanding the emergency plan be activated, regardless of the damage it’ll cause. Q is captured while John is now torturing him. In Guild capture, we see Lucy again now working as a maid, since her ability is useless now that the Agency figured out how to counter it. Francis tells Atsushi he’s keeping him here to protect him while he destroys the entire city, noting they’ve already dealt with the Organization, the one that Ango belongs to and that the Mafia and Agency are left to go. The plan is to have John connect every tree with Q’s ability, so that if he uses the curse, everyone will go mad and kill each other, essentially burning the city to the ground. Atsushi surrenders, claiming that the Agency will aid them, but Francis enacts the plan anyway. Lucy visits him in prison now to make fun of him. She’s been abused quite a bit, like Atsushi was. Back in Lucy’s playroom, suddenly, she tells him it’s too late, but if Osamu touches Q’s doll, the power will be nullified. She realizes Atsushi is willing to sacrifice himself for this, so she gives him a parachute that she kept for herself. He knows she’s fucked now, so it appears she’s going to lock herself in her playroom forever now, but tells him to save her when he can as well. He sees from the sky that even the Mafia are trying to save everyone, knowing they have nowhere to rule if the city is gone. Mark destroys his parachute and he falls from the sky. However, something awakens within Atsushi and he’s somehow survives. The city is already in a terrible state of affairs and Mark continues to fire on him. But Osamu arrives and takes the doll, not to mention creates a smokescreen to jam Mark’s anti-air cannons. He realizes Osamu actually knew this would happen the whole time. Atsushi also has an idea now on how they can stop this, but knows no one will like it: an alliance with the Mafia.

THE GOOD

  • Kyouka and Lucy in a single episode?! My heart’s a’flutterin’!
  • The true villains are at full display now

THE BAD

  • I kinda miss crazy eyed Lucy…

Episode Score: 4/5

Drifters (Ep.8)

SYNOPSIS

Yoichi admits he nearly died in that battle and that’s when Lord Yoshitsune talks to him and freaks him out. Oda again asks about Octobrists and again we see the same answer, though it appears Oda knows who he is now, but Toyohisa has no idea who he is. Haruakira says he was also brought into the world like the rest of them, so he is a Drifter himself. They’re upset when Toyohisa reveals he never killed Joan, because taking the head of a woman is immoral to him. He says he won’t allow that man who brought them there use him as a pawn, he is still human in the end. We learn that along the way, they lost Scipio and since then Hannibal has not been the same. Now with Scipio is walking around and ends up finding the crashed fighter jet and the pilot, who has become a god to a race of wolf people. When he hears Scipio say Rome, he fights him due to the betrayal of Italy as a part of the Axis. Meanwhile, Oda now becomes best friends with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid because of their guns. However, they cannot replicate it the guns, so it becomes obvious once more to go see the Dwarves. More members of Octobrist show up as well, bringing sulfur with them, as Oda asked Olminu to gather some. His plan is to destroy the Orte empire and have each race self-govern with Toyohisa in charge of the entire military. He also admits he doesn’t have what it takes to lead from the top, hence why Toyohisa is getting that role. Speaking of which, of all people, he’s the one who approaches the crazy Hannibal. He attacks Hannibal and discovers that while he’s still crazy, his instincts are still very much alive. Even with the constant hostility, Shara agrees to help him free the Dwarves noting that either of them could’ve helped each other when Orte ensalved them. This time around, they’ll be the ones to cancel out generations of fighting between the two races. Before leaving to go back to headquarters, one of the guys toss Oda a pistol.

THE GOOD

  • We’re getting nearly everyone together now
  • I’m convinced there’s at least a second season now with how much time is left this season and I’m so happy about that!

THE BAD

  • As much as I still enjoyed the episode, it was just a ton of talking and plot set up

Episode Score: 4/5

Flip Flappers (Ep.8)

SYNOPSIS

It’s pool time at school and somehow during this, they fall into a portal IN THE POOL!!! It’s a very futuristic world and they’re soon attacked by a muscular…bird…thing. Yayaka and the others show up as well. Then some creepy evil scientist looking guy shows up as well to help, calling himself the Great White Creator and Almighty Ruler–but Papika just calls him Pops. He claims to be the one who built the entire city and these bird things arrived and started destroying it. Wait…where the girls giant in this world the whole time?! They’re like…twice as big as Pops. An alarm sounds and it seems something big is heading their way. This thing is Megazord sized. It’s way too tough, even for the Yayaka’s crew. So Pops brings them all together and Cocona apparently is over her fear of Pure Illusion and wants to take the giant on. So he puts them in a box and sends them into a tank and fighter jet. They still can’t do anything, but Pops tell them they might be able to “awaken” it, which through Flip Flapping THEY TURN INTO A GIANT FUCKING MECH!!! But they still can’t destroy it. Yayaka convinces Pops to give her another robot and she becomes a mech of her own. So being forced to, she Flip Flapping-s as well with the other two and they become the ultimate mech, which just looks like a skyscraper apparently. Yayaka’s teammates try to take the fragment, but Pops grabs it, claiming it’s for the the other girls. It looks like a fight’s imminent, but Yayaka calls them off.

THE GOOD

  • MECHS!!!

THE BAD

  • The one-piece swimsuit all episode thing was quite random and unnecessary

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Izetta, The Last Witch (Ep.8)

SYNOPSIS

Izetta’s sick! But there will be a party the next day where the allies will decide how to act after Izetta’s work. Ricelt lands in Eylstadt and starts playing the role of the lovable villain. After royally fucking up his first parachute jump and falling into a river not long after, he gets picked up by a lovely young lady and another girl, who…oh shit, it’s Bianca and Lotte. He starts talking about himself, but it’s unclear whether his history is a story or the truth, like how he was refused to be a full soldier because of an illness. We then learn that Sieg sent them out there, hearing about a spy in the old capital, aka where the old castle is. However, I assume this is referring to Ricelt’s contact, not himself. Speaking of which, he pisses off Bianca real hard trying to get her to lead him into the castle. Even worse, he hears her scream when he goes to apologize and it’s just because Lotte’s bathing her. Oh dear, they’re totally going to be a couple by the time this series is over, aren’t they? He meets with his contact and they plan to strike tomorrow. Back at the party, the girls go outside as Izetta’s embarrassed and OH SHIT BERCKMANN’S HERE! He’s with a white-haired woman and Izetta is freaked out about the girl. She suddenly kisses Izetta, biting her and taking her blood and then passes out. Clearly she’s what was hidden in the research lab, what she is we do not know. But they disappear and then we hear that the “Americans” will send troops soon. Meanwhile, Ricelt continues his plan, but notes to himself he never got to apologize to Bianca, which tells you that she’ll be involved soon enough. I actually worry she might die this episode now. They kill a few soldiers along the way and find the tomb and apparently had blood of Izetta with them to activate the door. And they find the ley lines map. However, the blood continues to activate something else, a fragment of some sort that falls from the wall. Sure enough, Bianca arrives to find them and give chase. We see Ricelt was shot during the initial scuffle and gives the contact the fragment and camera with the ley lines photographed, planning to lead Bianca away. They now have a standoff and Ricelt is killed rather than Bianca and the contact is also killed by a sniper. However, another man arrives to grab the gear before they reach the body.

I cannot believe I’m about to do this, but after a number of poorly written episodes, I have to. This show is going on notice due to the pure frustrations I’m having with the show’s writing as of the second half of this season. The first few episodes especially were fantastic, the midway point was still good, but I started raising red flags at a few things. Now at Episode 8, I’m absolutely furious with the poor writing, missing of several great plot opportunities and quite frankly, the progression of this show has come down to downright lazy reasoning and plot twists. I’m sorry, but the adorable female cast might not be able to save this show if the writing keeps up with this bullshit

THE GOOD

  • This was a cute little episode that ended in a tragic death which I’m not a fan of here

THE BAD

  • What was the point of the cute relationship forming between Ricelt and Bianca if it was going to end five minutes later? This was a huge missed opportunity here to not have both alive for a couple more episodes, forming a relationship and then one of them (let’s assume Ricelt) dying. War is full of death, but this one could’ve been saved a little longer.
  • Would it not have been wise to keep eyes on the body until they retrieved it?

Episode Score: 3/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Keijo!!!!!!!! (Ep.8)

SYNOPSIS

Nozomi and Usagi are finally having their match. She’s facing her first opponent that’s much faster than her and also her smaller frame allows her to move faster, and become harder to hit. But Nozomi eventually wins by knocking Usagi off her feet. She’s crushed by this loss, but at the same time now has a second girl she wants to sleep with (maybe). But she still wants Rio to herself. The camp is over and a month later it’s time for the East-West War, so we now know that unless there’s a second season coming, the last four or five episodes will be devoted to this tournament. The Suruga school has better facilities, coaches, sponsors supplying everything, basically they’re the rich girl school. They also overhear some woman talking shit, about how the West (Nozomi’s side) has never won a tournament. Nozomi gets involved and one of the East’s players gets in front of her as well. She knocks Nozomi back without even moving her hips, but in the process, Nozomi also attacked and rips part of the girl’s jacket. Rio creates a sandstorm and a pair of twins counter it, now Usagi’s double jealous. The teachers pull them back, scolding them for talking smack with them, instead of beating the shit out of them when they fight them in a race. The war will be four-member teams, so obviously the twins will become a problem. It seems obvious, the four girls will be a team, but they’re not! Team one is Rio, Mari (who we’ve never seen before), Kotone and Sayaka of all people. Team to is Atsuko, Usagi, Kazane and Non. Which means Nozomi will be with Rin, Saya (new girl) and Hanabi. So it seems there are three matches. Apparently as we hear from those reporters from Episode 1, the East aren’t even playing their #1. The first race has a jungle gym looking land. The twins, a muscle girl and a girl they call the “Ass-Eater” are their opponents. A shame that Non’s not facing this girl. But she’s interested in Sayaka. But Rio freaks her out with her desire to scissor this girl as well. Naturally, the episode ends as Sayaka lifts up her bikini top to do something.

THE GOOD

  • We’re finally done with one-pieces!
  • Okay okay okay, what’s Sayaka going to gain by lifting up her top after she has a secret ability through giving herself a wedgie?

THE BAD

  • Not gonna lie, I hate the teams, why you’re not pairing Nozomi, Sayaka, Kazane and Non together is ridiculous!

Episode Score: 4/5

My Wife is the Student Council President: Season 2 (Ep.8)

SYNOPSIS

Ui takes advantage of a heavy sleeping Hayato to say wifey things to him without consequence and loses her shit over it, happily of course. She’s made him breakfast this morning which worries him and for good reason. But apparently it isn’t bad, it’s passable this time, lucky Hayato. They eat again later, something Rin brought over last night which annoys Ui again. Hayato assumes she’s spying on them because of their “indecent” relationship, but Ui knows it’s for an alternate reason, which further annoys her that Hayato can’t figure this out. Then when things get all hot and bothery, Rin just barges into the house and reveals she’s officially moved in with Kei.

THE GOOD

  • Standard episode, couple laughs, couple sexy moments
  • Now with Rin in the complex full time, she’ll be around every episode in full force, which does make the show better

THE BAD

  • I know it’s an innuendo for oral sex, but I don’t care for the finger sucking this show loves to do, it’s not sexy at all, at least to me

Episode Score: 4/5

Nanbaka (Ep.8)

Okay, are we doing it this week? It looks like it. Jyugo has gone so crazy they’re actually evacuating the inmates from the stadium. So Momoko actually tells the guards to apprehend them, but that’s not really helping much either. The other three know he’s in trouble and will be given a much harsher sentence, likely taken from them too. Kiji and Samon join the guards and handle the situation pretty well, three on Musashi, only Hajime with Jyugo. Musashi is done, but Jyugo’s putting up a better fight. The other three inmates rush to grab Jyugo and stop him before he does anything else. He strikes down Nico and Rock and looks to straight up slice Uno in half, but Hajime with one hand catches the blade. He then punches Jyugo so hard he coughs up blood all over Hajime’s face and then punches the shit out of him until Momoko tells him to stop. A few days later, the guards are scolding Hajime for the “little beating” he gave him, aka Jyugo’s still unconscious and in critical condition. He returns to the building and Uno is pissed about everything, but Hajime does concede that he went overboard and wasn’t intending to nearly kill Jyugo. Afterwards, Uno even admits that he nearly liked a prison guard, but Hajime’s “betrayal” has changed his mind once more. The announcer guy shows up with a letter from the Warden to Hajime, suspending him for three days. Hajime’s super bummed out and Momoko is crying because she had to punish him.

THE GOOD

  • The fighting in this episode was top-notch!
  • Hajime continuing to be the badass of the show

THE BAD

  • Nothing really to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Poco’s Udon World (Ep.7)

SYNOPSIS

Back on the train heading home, Souta and Poco are back in Kagawa, now I’m curious what you do for another six episodes. Back at home, Poco goes alone to visit the old woman next door. She returns with Poco and a watermelon and teaches him how to machine gun spit watermelon seeds. He gets a call from Mai, the girl he had a crush on and asks if they want to join them tomorrow for a Gaogao show. She leaves Nozomi with him as she’s got the little one scheduled for a checkup. The three look around before the show, including freaking out at a bunch of fish. At the show he gets asked again about the restaurant and he ought to just re-open it already before even I get sick of people asking him about it. Afterwards, Souta notes how quickly Nozomi’s growing up, the spoiled brat completely gone from her, now a more mature little girl. Back home, he finds an old drawing on the wall he made as a kid, more memories from his childhood and more regret from not talking with his father more. As the episode ends, he gets a call from his now old boss, but we’ve yet to learn what it is, likely a meeting with that nearby place Souta might start working at. OR! My other theory is that the company shut down and Souta now has to find work again, obviously re-opening the restaurant.

THE GOOD

  • Another cute, easy sit down episode

THE BAD

  • Nothing really to complain about

Episode Score: 3.5/5
