Winter 2017 Anime Preview

So we are just a couple weeks away from the start of the 2017 winter anime season! So before we get to the end of this current season, it’s time for me to preview all the anime listed to air during this season and see where my interest is at for each of them.

Before we get started however, I’m laying down a few ground rules:

  • If a show is a second season or further and I haven’t either watched the anime yet or dropped the previous season, I will not be previewing those shows.
  • I will try to preview as many as I can, but there may be a couple where the synopsis may turn me off before even clicking the link to the trailer.
  • Please understand that these trailers are all in Japanese and usually don’t come with subtitles, so a lot of what I talk about is more what I see and perceive rather than what’s actually being said and going on in the trailer.
  • Also understand that I am deciding on shows based on my own personal tastes. Obviously there will be shows you think are at the top of your list, but they don’t interest me and vice-versa.
  • At the end of each preview I will give the show a “Yay” or “Nay”. Should be self-explanatory as to which one means I’ll be watching those shows
  • And for any show that does get previewed on this list, even if I give it the go-ahead, if it’s not on Crunchyroll where I can easily access it on my PS4 (which makes my screencaps really easy too), I will not watch it and will not have it on my weekly reviews. I’m aware there are other routes, but my time is limited and I also don’t like resorting to torrents and such.

Anyways, let’s get this show on the road!

ACCA 13-ku Kansatsu-ka

SYNOPSIS

The kingdom of Dowa, which is subdivided into 13 states, is celebrating its monarch’s 99th birthday. These thirteen states have many agencies that are controlled by the giant organization known as ACCA. Within ACCA, Jean Otis is the second-in-command of the inspection agency. His agency has 10 people placed in each of the 13 states, with a central office in the capital city. They keep track of all the activities of ACCA across the kingdom, and keep data on each state’s ACCA office flowing towards the central office. Jin also often has business trips from the capital to the other districts, to check on the situation and personnel there.

THOUGHTS – YAY

While thus far, police/spy anime really haven’t gotten my attention much, aside from Bungo Stray Dogs, but that’s due to its over-the-top comedy, I still continue to have enough interest in these kinds of shows to at least give the series a single episode shot. I’m not confident it will gain my attention, but who knows, maybe this is the one that finally lures me in.

Akiba’s Trip: The Animation

SYNOPSIS

The Akiba’s Trip games take place in a reproduction of Tokyo’s Akihabara district, where the player must fight vampires by tearing off their clothes and exposing them to the sunlight.

THOUGHTS – YAY

It’s going to be trash, I know it is. The game is so bad it’s good, so I have to think the anime will be the same. I’m hoping this show will yield similar results to what Keijo!!!!!!!! did for me last season, being a show that knows it’s a fanservice anime and revels in it and laughs at itself when doing so.

The only thing I admit that worries me, is that I’m a bit unsure about how I feel with the show’s animation style. It seems almost a bit too cartoonish, like it’s supposed to be a kids anime.

BanG Dream!

SYNOPSIS

Kasumi Toyama felt a fateful meeting with a star-shaped guitar in a pawnshop one day. There are four girls who, like Kasumi, have a dream of looking for a place that can spark them.

(Source: MAL News)

THOUGHTS – NAY

What was going to determine whether I would be interested in the show or not was the music. And the music in the trailer was bad, the kind of J-Pop idol music that causes blood to spill out of my ears. I thought having the girl with such a badass guitar, the music might be badass too, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Booooooooooooo!!!

Chain Chronicle: Haecceitas no Hikari

SYNOPSIS

No synopsis available, show is based off a mobile game.

THOUGHTS – YAY

If that’s the animation style throughout the show, it’s gonna have to be pretty bad to get me to drop it. Why? Because the animation looks like the current Fire Emblem games’ cutscenes, which by the way…BADASS!!! So yeah, by looks alone, I’m curious as to what this show’s about.

Demi-chan wa Kataritai

SYNOPSIS

Monsters of legend walk among us, going by the name “demi-humans.” Ever since he’s discovered the “demis,” one young man has become obsessed with them. So when he gets a job as a teacher at a high school for demi-girls, it’s a dream come true! But these demis, who include a rambunctious vampire, a bashful headless girl, and a succubus, have all the problems normal teenagers have, on top of their supernatural conditions. How to handle a classroom full of them?!

(Source: Kodansha Comics)

THOUGHTS – YAY

The moment I saw the headless girl, I was sold on it. Now I don’t expect this show to be anywhere near as ecchi-ridden as Monster Musume was, but because of that show, I’m certainly more than open to a show where one guy deals with several monster girls, granted this one is more centered around demi-humans rather than monsters, but either way, I’m far more open to the concept than I was before.

ēlDLIVE

SYNOPSIS

Chuuta Kokonose is an orphan who lives with his aunt. For as long as he can remember he’s had a voice in his head, but other than that he’s a normal boy – right until the day when a strangely-looking thing follows him home and teleports him to a place filled with more fantastic creatures. It’s a space police station, and Rein Brickke, the Chief of Solar System Department, tells him that he’s been chosen by the computer as a possible candidate to join the police force, although Misuzu Sonokata, a girl from Chuuta’s school with an angelic face and ill temper who turns out to be one of Rein Brickke’s subordinates, doesn’t think him suitable for such a job. Chuuta, who was shocked at first, decides to take aptitude test after being urged by the voice in his head and to prove Misuzu wrong.

THOUGHTS – NAY

While I really like the animation style and the music was pretty badass, I cannot get past the idea in my head that this is a kids anime and that immediately turns me off the idea. Especially given that this is also a shounen anime, which I have really never has much success with watching, there’s just too many things about the show that make me positive it’s not for me.

Fuuka

SYNOPSIS

New meetings always come suddenly! The protagonist, Yuu Haruna, moves into a new town where he meets a somewhat strange girl who doesn’t have a cell phone. The girl, Fuuka, seems to have a strange allure that draws people to her, very much like a summer breeze. Looks like Yuu has been caught up in one wild love story!

(Source: Crunchyroll)

THOUGHTS – YAY

The ecchi is there to at least grab my attention, which since I’m simple and like keeping my ecchi show count high just to piss off feminists and anime purists alike. My only worry is the vibe I’m getting from the show is similar to shows like ReLIFE, which have burned me in the past as well. I’m going in with low expectations and hoping this one flies in under the radar.

Gabriel Dropout

SYNOPSIS

Chief Angel has come to Earth! However, she became so used to the life on Earth that she skips school and keeps playing online games, thus into self-destruction. It’s a school comedy that Gabriel turns into a lazy angel!

(Source: MAL News)

THOUGHTS – YAY

The synopsis has me very curious. It’s almost like it’s as if Umaru from Himouto! Umaru-Chan! is now an angel instead of a regular human. The animation and character designs are all pretty good too, so there’s a lot for me to like here. Hopefully the comedy’s good and that’ll keep the show in my good graces.

Hand Shakers

SYNOPSIS

The anime takes place in Osaka in “AD20XX,” and revolves around the Hand Shakers — partners who can summon “Nimrodes,” weapons born from their deep psyche by joining hands. In order to grant the pair’s wish, the Hand Shakers compete with and fight other Hand Shaker pairs. The top pair will then meet and challenge “God.”

“They, the receivers of the Revelation of Babel. They, the challengers to God.
They, who inevitably throw themselves into battle with their partners. What does God want from them?
And did they want powers exceeding that of Gods? The chosen ones, their souls linked, join hand and hand for the Ziggurat where the fighting shall ensue.”

(Source: ANN)

THOUGHTS – NAY

I can’t get past the “Nimrodes” name. Then to make it worst, I don’t like the animation style, the emphasis on hand holding is bugging me and for fuck’s sake, any anime that ends with fighting “God” just turns me off of it. So yeah, way too much I don’t like here, not interested in the slightest.

Kemono Friends

SYNOPSIS

The story takes place in Japari Park, a “gigantic integrated zoo.” In the zoo, due to the mysterious “sand star” substance, the animals start turning into human-shaped creatures called Animal Girls. Japari Park is a place where many people visit and have fun at, but one day a lost child wanders into the park. The lost child starts a journey to return, but because so many Animal Girls join in on the quest it becomes an unexpected grand adventure.

THOUGHTS – NAY

Probably a kids anime and a short. I also don’t like the animation style much either. Not much else to talk about, just not interested in this one.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

–No trailer available–

SYNOPSIS

Miss Kobayashi is your average office worker who lives a boring life, alone in her small apartment–until she saves the life of a female dragon in distress. The dragon, named Tohru, has the ability to magically transform into an adorable human girl (albeit with horns and a long tail!), who will do anything to pay off her debt of gratitude, whether Miss Kobayashi likes it or not. With a very persistent and amorous dragon as a roommate, nothing comes easy, and Miss Kobayashi’s normal life is about to go off the deep end!

THOUGHTS – YAY

I’ve been very fortunate over the last year of anime with slice of life shows and the plot to this one sounds like a funny one that’ll be another nice sit-down sort of show. Hopefully I’m right without a trailer available to give me an idea of this.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

SYNOPSIS

After a traffic accident, Kazuma Sato’s disappointingly brief life was supposed to be over, but he wakes up to see a beautiful girl before him. She claims to be a goddess, Aqua, and asks if he would like to go to another world and bring only one thing with him. Kazuma decides to bring the goddess herself, and they are transported to a fantasy world filled with adventure, ruled by a demon king. Now Kazuma only wants to live in peace, but Aqua wants to solve many of this world’s problems, and the demon king will only turn a blind eye for so long…

(Source: Crunchyroll)

THOUGHTS – YAY

One of a few shows I’m watching the next season of, Konosuba was a super funny show last winter that kept me in stitches after many of their episodes. Hopefully this time around the season isn’t so short, it was weird having the show just suddenly stop at 10 episodes rather than the traditional 12 or 13. If you haven’t checked this show out yet, you really should if you’re looking for a slapstick sort of comedy.

Kuzu no Honkai

SYNOPSIS

17-year-old Awaya Mugi and Yasuraoka Hanabi appear to be the ideal couple. They are both pretty popular, and they seem to suit each other well. However, outsiders don’t know of the secret they share. Both Mugi and Hanabi have hopeless crushes on someone else, and they are only dating each other to soothe their loneliness. Mugi is in love with Minagawa Akane, a young teacher who used to be his home tutor. Hanabi is also in love with a teacher, a young man who has been a family friend since she was little. In each other, they find a place where they can grieve for the ones they cannot have, and they share a loneliness-driven physical intimacy. Will things stay like this for them forever?

(Source: MangaHelpers)

THOUGHTS – NAY

I’m probably going to be wrong on this front, it’ll probably be a fan-favourite knowing my luck. But from the plot and the preview, I get too many vibes of a show like Orange that I got completely turned off of after a single episode. Generally speaking, romance anime just bore the hell out of me, so due to my own personal biases, I can’t convince myself that this show is interesting to me and therefore worth watching.

Little Witch Academia (TV)

SYNOPSIS

The story revolves around Akko, who as a child watched the witch Shiny Chariot perform a show, and from then on dreamed of becoming a witch. She enters the Luna Nova Academy, a school for witches that Shiny Chariot attended. In this new town she meets new friends and starts a new school life. At the school she has lessons on riding brooms and the wonder of magic, but Akko and her friends Lotte and Sucy keep getting wrapped up in tumultuous events.

THOUGHTS – YAY

It’s a Trigger anime, of course I’m going to watch at least the first episode.

Masamune-kun no Revenge

SYNOPSIS

As an overweight child, Makabe Masamune was mercilessly teased and bullied by one particular girl, Adagaki Aki. Determined to one day exact his revenge upon her, Makabe begins a rigorous regimen of self-improvement and personal transformation.

Years later, Masamune re-emerges as a new man. Handsome, popular, with perfect grades and good at sports, Masamune-kun transfers to Aki’s school, and is unrecognizable to her. Now, Masamune-kun is ready to confront the girl who bullied him so many years ago and humiliate her at last. But will revenge be as sweet as he thought?

(Source: manga synopsis via Seven Seas Entertainment)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I really like the concept of this show, I just hope the show can back it up with some comedy, a good set of characters (as I’m afraid Masamune might be an easily hate-able main character) and maybe a little ecchi to spice it up.

One Room

No trailer available–

SYNOPSIS

The series will tell “three stories raised in your (one) room.”

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I have a feeling this is going to end up as a short, but who knows. The reason I’m giving this the green light is solely based on the art, as while I can’t recall the name of this artist, I know the style very well and love it, so I’m at least curious to see where it’s going.

Seiren

SYNOPSIS

The anime is an omnibus work that will consist of four-episode arcs focusing on each of the main heroines. The three planned story arcs will focus on Hikari Tsuneki, Touru Miyamae, and Kyouko Touno. The love stories take place in the summer of the main characters’ second year of high school. The protagonist Shouichi is anxious about growing up, and his homeroom teacher calls him to talk about his career plans. Shouichi meets various girls and heads to an unknown future.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

Like with Kuzu no Honkai, I’m getting the Orange vibe from the show that’s burned me before, so from this feeling, once again I feel confident that it’s a show that won’t really click with me. I will admit though the animation looks really nice with this show.

Tales of Zestiria the X 2nd Season

SYNOPSIS

Sorey is a human youth who grew up among the “seraphim” (tenzoku), spiritual beings not visible to humans. Sorey believes in the folklore that says “long ago, every human was able to see the seraphim” and dreams of unraveling the ancient mystery to make the world a place where people and seraphim can live together in peace.

One day, Sorey visits the human capital for the very first time. He becomes embroiled in an incident during which he pulls out a holy sword imbedded in a rock and ends up becoming a “Shepherd,” one who casts away calamity from the world. He begins to realize the gravity of his mission, and his dream of coexistence between mankind and the seraphim becomes more intense—

And thus, the Shepherd embarks on an amazing journey with his companions.

THOUGHTS – YAY

Second season of a really good (and holy shit is it ever beautiful!) show, hoping it can keep up what it started in its first season.

Urara Meirochou

–No trailer available–

SYNOPSIS

This is Meiro-machi (Labyrinth Town), the town of fortune-telling. In town, there is a fortune-telling shop called Urara, where girls aspiring to be fortune-tellers come from all over the country. Chiya, who was raised in the mountains, comes to the town with a purpose, but what is it exactly? There, she meets Kon who is always serious, Koume who loves all things western, and the shy Nono. Their fun days of living together as apprentice fortune-tellers are about to begin.

(Source: MyAnimeList)

THOUGHTS – YAY

Likely a short, but anything that sounds like a silly comedy to me gets my attention. The character designs also grab my attention a little bit, so even without a trailer, there’s something keeping me curious as to what this show is.

And that’s it! So at this time, the total number of shows I’ll be watching at the start of the winter season will be…13!

Wow, this number ended up being a lot smaller than I was anticipating. A large part of it is due to now that I’ve had over a full year under my belt of catching every simulcast, there’s a lot of shows that are sequels to shows I didn’t like, which reduces the list a lot more. That and honestly, since my free time has lessened recently, I’m becoming harsher and harsher with each show, not wanting to waste time with shows I’m not looking forward to watching every week. Now because the number’s so low to start, if I happen to hear a show I haven’t greenlit is really good, I might check it out and if it is good, I’ll add it to the list the following week. But as of right now, I expect the number to start at 13 and get to 10 and maybe even lower after the first 2-3 weeks.

See you in January!
