Week #12 – Fall Anime 2016

Week #12 has arrived with this Fall anime season. What’s in store this week?!

As always I’m live reacting (though typing it out to be posted later) to each episode I watch and going over what happens in each episode with the occasional quip and joke here and there. So for those trying to avoid spoilers, this entire article is full of them!

Bubuki Buranki: Hoshi no Kyojin (Ep.12)

SYNOPSIS

It appears everything is over and now they’re trying to live normal lives again. Azuma’s now enrolling in school, the same one as Kogane, perhaps others too. Azuma tells us it’s been a year since everything now. He gets a letter from Epizo saying he and his friends are on a quest trying to figure out how to bring his heart back to life, so it appears upon the defeat of the god, all Buranki have ceases to function. Hiiragi and Kinoa meanwhile are talking about Azuma transferring, but haven’t heard from him in a while. We learn from Hiiragi that Kinoa’s gone deep into lacrosse as her new venture now. Hiiragi also appears to want to completely push away his “Buranki life” for a more, normal life. We see Shuusaku with Azuma now (and Zetsubi too who’s car sick like a motherfucker…because she’s pregnant!), talking about Laetitia and other things. Akihito is visiting the Russians’ graves. Reoko apparently has been in hiding and asleep for pretty much the full year since everything happened, Souya taking care of her. Azuma visits her, who doesn’t appear to be too happy to see him, almost acting like she’s not even herself anymore, a normal high school girl. Souya tells us she’s no longer who she was, Entei gone from her and now she’s a normal girl with new memories to make, in fact no memories at all. Even though she’s no longer “Reoko Banryuu”, she is being kept in a facility away from the public, Souya knowing there’s more than enough people who would love to put a bullet in her head the second she walks out. Kaoruko is moving into her own place as well and apparently is still causing trouble for herself. Back with Azuma, he remembers Guy’s words before his death, how his life will be nothing more than mundane for the remainder of it. He stops going to class and starts to ponder everything when Kogane finds him somehow. She notes how they don’t talk amongst each other anymore and she doesn’t want to pretend it all just never happened. Then Kinoa shows up (with her Bubuki?) along with Shizuru and Hiiragi eventually as well. All four have their Bubuki for some reason. It appears today was the year anniversary since it all ended. And then Shizuru deduces real quick that Kinoa and Hiiragi are dating, which throws them all off. They all cheer up Azuma and decide to make their own adventure together.

THE GOOD

  • Lot of nice things ending, Zetsubi’s pregnant, Reoko’s starting at her cute age again, Kogane has adorable glasses

THE BAD

  • REALLY KINOA?! YOU PICKED HIIRAGI?!!!
  • The idea of everyone wanting to push away these memories feels so stupid to me, they were all so happy together, but now the moment it’s all over, they don’t want to remember it anymore?!
  • The end was very weak and considering I don’t know how you make a third season of this, it should’ve had a better closure

Episode Score: 3/5

FINAL OVERALL SCORE: 3.5/5

Bungo Stray Dogs (Ep.24)

SYNOPSIS

The fight continues, Atsushi and Akutagawa not doing much at all to Francis. Osamu meanwhile tells Kyouka that if she’d like, he can set her up with a life of killing again. Back to the battle, Akutagawa actually rescues Atsushi from falling off the ship and combines his power with Atsushi for one big punch with the ol’ classic Dragon Ball Z standoff. Francis eventually runs out of money defending against it and loses, falling off the ship. Akutagawa took the control terminal during that moment and thus begins an actual comical moment between the two of them. We then see that even though they stopped it, someone’s hacking the terminal and making it continue to drop. Kyouka suddenly chimes in, saying if they destroy it while it’s still in the air, they can stop it. You know this means she’s sacrificing herself. God fucking damn it. She’s going to crash the plane she’s in into the ship. But then she talks about the exam and how she’ll pass it. Suddenly I have a feeling that this is a test for her and the ship will climb once her intentions are for sure. But then the plane does indeed crash into the ship and sends it into the water. Osamu and the president shows up and reveal that the president’s ability takes control of an Agency user’s abilities and thus she was able to escape at the very last possible second. He then walks up to Akutagawa and tells him that after defeated Francis, he must be strong, so Akutagawa faints. The next day, Ango is talking with Herman asking about any members that weren’t involved so they won’t be arrested and reveals that he knows Herman was once the leader of the Guild himself. Mark, John and Louisa also talk amongst each other as to what their plans are now, with the Guild in complete disarray. John specifically plans to try and stop the disarray in the Guild. Lovecraft is also still alive and leaps into the water to sleep. Now it’s finally time for Kyouka to take her first step into the Agency office as an official member. Doppo takes the time to scold Atsushi for going solo before Akiko gets involved and makes him congratulate the two on their job well done. Atsushi finally takes the time as well to apologize to Haruno and Naomi for beating them up because of Q’s ability way back when. They forgive him, but Junichirou hadn’t heard about this and he’s not so forgiving. Poe actually shows up to say hello as well. Kouyou and Chuuya meet with the Boss, celebrating their victory. He asks her why she didn’t try to escape when she was captured by the Agency, to which we learn that she was somehow instrumental in Kyouka’s survival, but we’re not sure exactly what that was. We see Osamu disappeared during the party to meet with Hirotsu of the Mafia, the two working together to set up the entire plan that would stop the Moby Dick and save Kyouka as well. They intentionally wanted Atsushi and Akutagawa to hook up and work together, as Osamu tells us that “the real disaster is coming soon”. We then see the hacker that tried to divert the Moby Dick, his name is Fyodor, working with Nathaniel of the Guild and possibly Margaret, who is still unconscious. Osamu talks about how he feels while Akutagawa is a great commodity, he works better in a supporting role, hence having him with Atsushi as a test. The season ends with Atsushi and Akutagawa facing off once more.

THE GOOD

  • Gah, the heartstrings they pulled with Kyouka, even though I knew what the plan was, they fooled me just long enough to create a sense of doubt
  • A funny, lovely end to another great season

THE BAD

  • The final battle was a bit short
  • I’m not so sure I’m overly interested in Fyodor, hopefully in Season 3 they’ll pick it up a bit more

Episode Score: 4/5

FINAL OVERALL SCORE: 4.5/5

Drifters (Ep.12)

SYNOPSIS

The domination from the Drifters continue however Oda notes that he’s getting a bad feeling about this, like the battle that had him being betrayed. Enter Hijikata of the Shinsegumi. Toyohisa realizes this man while he knows about the Shimazu, he’s from the future, so his clan must’ve done something pretty bad after he was gone. Hannibal is his insanity gives Oda an idea though. They figure out where the retreating troops end goal takes place and adjusts accordingly to match them. The Count starts to ponder the plans of the Ends and even wonders if he actually knows who the Black King is, which makes me wonder if it’s Hitler. Hijikata and Toyohisa continue their fight, neither side giving an inch. Toyohisa is quite the expert however in pissing his opponent off. During the fight however, his blade breaks and he takes a ton of slices in response. Meanwhile, Oda corrals the army into one place and blows it up with fire arrows and guns. Toyohisa admits he messed around like he did as a way to prolong Oda’s strategy so he’d succeed, willing to die just for that alone. When Toyohisa manages to get the best of him, the Black King demands Hijikata withdraw from the battle. He reluctantly does so, which pisses off both of them, but really Toyohisa the most. But then he passes out. It also appears the man who sought to kill Oda in history is now an End as well.

THE GOOD

  • Great battle sequence between Toyohisa and Hijikata

THE BAD

  • What a weak ending!
  • Nothing is resolved at the end of this season, hell, no one even died at the end!

Flip Flappers (Ep.12)

SYNOPSIS

In Pure Illusion, Papika recognizes this place and can even smell Cocona. Salt and company work on getting their systems back up, seeing what the mixture of Pure Illusion into the world has done to the real world thus far. Salt leaves, telling them to use “Asclepius’ Box”. When Yayaka and Papika get too close, Mimi rises into the sky and approaches them. Papika wants both Cocona and the real Mimi back, but all Mimi hears is that she wants to take Cocona from her. So she traps them in that cage world that Papika and Cocona we’re in before, Yayaka now Flip Flapping with Papika. It appears as if they’re going through each and every world they went to, including my favourite world where BDSM Midna lives. Mimi and Cocona watch as the two girls are slowly being beaten. The twins meanwhile are still at the base, the boy injured. Back with Yayaka, when it looks like she’s about to die, she reveals that over time she actually did really like being around Cocona and wanted to apologize to her for deceiving her. Then the fragment she holds activates, granting her wish and she Flip Flaps into a new form and defeats her once again. Salt reaches an old facility which is the villain’s base, after a prototype piece of technology. Hidaka takes the glasses off and gives Bu-chan actual power armor and because he’s still an idiot, Bu-chan basically does the bare minimum. Once again, Papika tries to talk to Mimi, but she ignores them and brings them into the mech world. Papika nearly gets to Cocona and starts to get Mimi a little more vulnerable. She recalls them talking together while Mimi was still pregnant, but before she can say something specifically, Mimi sends a tentacle of sorts into the back of Papika’s head, like she took the memory literally out of her head. Then it appears the good part of Mimi separates from evil Mimi and talks to Cocona, telling her she needs to choose the world she wants to be a part of. Papika remembers that Mimi wanted Cocona to live freely, a life Mimi never had. The two girls transform in a new way now and evil Mimi snaps, transforming into that large monster from the mech episode…and the girls One Punch Man her? And the episode ends? Huh?

THE GOOD

  • BDSM MIDNA CAME BACK!!!

THE BAD

  • I have no understanding of the last couple minutes of this episode

Episode Score: 3/5

Keijo!!!!!!!! (Ep.12)

SYNOPSIS

Nozomi is bruised badly, silver Maya (or Kaya as she’s called) is apparently the school’s #1, because split personalities can be considered two different people here. She kicks her own teammate off, leaving just herself with the four girls. One goes down immediately and the castle continues to sink. She does some random boob stuff to disorient Nozomi and starts fucking her up. Even together, the three can’t do anything to Kaya. Nozomi knows she needs to use the Vacuum Butt Cannon, but with her injuries, she can’t perform it. So Hanabi uses her boobs to make Nozomi go Super Saiyan, while Kaya takes her and Rin out, leaving it one-on-one. Nozomi literally is becoming Goku, shaking off heavy attacks all of a sudden. Nagisa explains it like Hanabi used her boobs like acupuncture to unlock all the potential in Nozomi. Now the fight truly begins. Nozomi demands to see Maya, so they can have a proper race they can both be proud of. Kaya tries to play instead, but Maya takes over again. So Nozomi decides to go for one last Vacuum Butt Cannon. They have their epic final attack and in the end she uses Maya’s own momentum to have an even more powerful attack and Nozomi manages to win it for Setouchi. Afterwards, she sees Maya apologize to her team for losing, expecting them to hate her, but the coach embraces her lovingly, apparently her mother (I’m feeling stepmother honestly). The interviewer from episode 1 approaches Nozomi for comments on the win. They all get together for dinner, but Maya doesn’t show up, absolutely exhausted and passed out in her room. Maya’s coach meets with Nagisa, talking about the tournament. Eventually Maya does show up though, expressing her desire to fight Nozomi again some day. The girls graduate, Nozomi and Sayaka in the same region together along with Rin and Yuko, but the rest will be elsewhere. They all take photos together, including Mio getting a kiss on Nozomi’s cheek. At their branch, it appears Nozomi and Sayaka already have a reputation.

THE GOOD

  • A Dragon Ball Z-esque finish to the final battle, how awesome
  • The jokes were in full swing this week

THE BAD

  • I was hoping for a better final battle, but it wasn’t terrible
  • Either I haven’t noticed it before or this just started happening, it almost feels like the half-assed some of the animation and facial expressions in this last episode, like they were crunching at the very end
  • I will be really upset if this show doesn’t have a second season

Episode Score: 4/5

FINAL OVERALL SCORE: 4.5/5

My Wife is the Student Council President: Season 2 (Ep.12)

SYNOPSIS

Ui’s having trouble figuring out how to make her first Christmas with Hayato super sexy. Karen reacts about how you’d expect. The Eve arrives and the Student Council and Disciplinary Committee join together at Hayato’s for a party. Ui is not happy. Hayato tries to leave, but Mato has a crossdressing picture to keep him there, but it’s too late, everyone sees anyway. Ui’s more upset he hid this from her and Rin gloats about how she knew about his “crossdressing”. So Ui solves this by helping him crossdress. Naturally Kei helps out because she’s not going to miss this. Mato’s upset, but only because he’s flat-chested. She suggests Rin take off her bra and have Hayato wear it. And just to make it worse, Honoka shows up as well. They take a group photo to end the show’s second season.

THE GOOD

  • All of Hayato’s nightmares in one episode, perfect!
  • Honoka and Kei at the same time really is the worst case scenario for Hayato

THE BAD

  • Nothing really to report, just a meh finale

Episode Score: 4/5

Nanbaka (Ep.12)

We get some back story on Musashi, how he’d always had a higher than normal body temperature and it started really affecting him around high school. He suffered spontaneous combustion and barely survived. Rumours ran rampant after this and he was outcasted, believed to be an arsonist. Then we see his parents’ place was burned down and the person who made people think it was him is that blonde elf-looking motherfucker that we’ve seen appearing to be in cahoots with “that man”. After that, the experiments happened and Musashi is what he is today. Kenshirou reveals he’s been working on trying to out this organization since he was a cop and intends to continue until he ends them. But now it’s finally time for Uno’s game room to be revealed. It’s empty, cause he wants input from everyone first on what goes in it. Musashi shows up as well, but nothing big comes out of it. At night, Uno and Jyugo chat about how Jyugo for the first time appears actually really happy. Jyugo goes out alone when he’s approached by the elf guy as the episode ends.

THE GOOD

  • There was a few good jokes in this episode

THE BAD

  • The episode was really not interesting at all this week, I didn’t care for the Musashi backstory, Uno’s game room was uneventful and honestly the elf guy getting involved again, it feels almost too late now, it doesn’t carry the weight I want it to

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Poco’s Udon World (Ep.11)

SYNOPSIS

Once again, Rinko brings up the whole “he’s not your kid” issue with Souta. His goal is to figure out a way to make things work so that he can live with Poco forever. During an incident, he comes across and old photo album and camera. We learn that over time he became uninterested in taking over the restaurant and we go back to his injuries where he met his future boss. Speaking of which, he gets a call from Manabu about a job opportunity, the first job being to help them livestream a festival. At home later he cries a bit, sad his father wasn’t alive to see him actually enjoy doing something for a change. Rinko and Shinobu visit the next day and he finally reveals that Poco isn’t a friend’s child. She then brings up the visions they had at their parents’ grave, but he doesn’t know about that either. Then Rinko teases Shinobu about his marriage interview, to which it obviously didn’t work out, so he’s still free. They all go to the festival, Mai and Nozomi joining them. Souta is working during the festival as well and he’s done a fantastic job. He gets some time away and talks with Mai about potentially “adopting” Poco. Shunsuke and Sae show up as well, naturally Sae asks about the udon again. Then during the fireworks display, his tail pops out. They try to cover it up, but everyone’s noticed.

THE GOOD

  • Well we’ve certainly got a cliffhanger for the final episode
  • Seeing everyone together was nice

THE BAD

  • Nothing really bad this week either

Episode Score: 4/5

  1. Nice reviews here! Looks like I might have to catch up with Bungou Stray Dogs at some point. I’ve been on the fence about it for a while now. Glad to see we have similar thoughts on Keijo! Heh. I really am hoping that it gets another run.

Loved the flip flapper ending bit: “I have no understanding of the last couple minutes of this episode” Ahahahaha.

I mean it’s mostly my reaction to every Flip Flappers episode, but this week especially was just a bit of a clusterfuck.
