Waifu, FWB or One-Night Stand? #37

It’s week #25 of Waifu, Friend With Benefits or One-Night Stand!

For those new to the article, this is not a post that talks about the “fuckability” of three randomly selected female characters from various anime and video games. I’m already attracted to them, it’s to be implied that I would share a bed with them already. What this article is meant to do, is go through their personalities, interests, anything pertinent to answering the question if they’re a one-time only, a friend that I might accept the occasional booty call from, or someone I would absolutely spend the rest of my life with.

So without further to do, let’s meet this week’s contestants!

Kicking off this week is the tsundere childhood friend that loves to beat you senseless with a kendo stick as soon as you’re caught doing anything obscene, Houki Shinonono from Infinite Stratos.

Being the girl raised at a shrine and with her kendo training, Houki is the archetypical disciplined character who is very stoic and modest, but also is a tad bit anti-social, all through her childhood she struggled to talk to anyone, the protagonist being the only real friend of hers throughout her childhood. She also has some trouble controlling her emotions, even her tough kendo training not able to keep her in full control of herself, often becoming unstable or making really bad decisions that usually result in her not stopping or pulling back in battle when she should. Lastly, she tends to be a bit prideful, not really wanting to admit when she’s wrong or agree with others.

To finish off though, Houki has an extremely difficult time with her femininity. She has almost no confidence in herself and her looks, cannot get comfortable when wearing revealing outfits and especially cannot get comfortable when wearing more feminine clothes like dresses. It’s very clear that she is a tomboy through and through and she struggles with the idea that she can be very feminine looking, being cute and pretty, even though she has one of the best bodies of all the girls on the show.

Anyways, here’s my call on Houki:

I’ve warmed up to Houki a lot more than when I first saw her in Season 1 of the show, but to pose the question to me of whether or not I’ve come to love her in the true sense of the word, it’s not even close. Her attitude and personality the majority of the time in the anime is extremely hostile and violent, her lack of comfort in her own skin and confidence in herself makes her a very difficult person to not only convince she’s pretty, but for her to be convinced you like her for her. She’s just way too much work!

Second up is the “hot chick” you really shouldn’t call a hot chick. From Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, it’s Nel Zelpher!

Finding personality information through Wikis and stuff just don’t seem to exist for Nel, so this is mostly off of her background information and my small memory of her from playing the game years ago.

As a soldier to the Queen of Aquaria, we can easily pencil in Nel in the present day as a loyal soldier with an intelligence background, as in the game she serves as the leader of the Secret Legion, who serve as part of the Queen’s personal guard who are responsible for intelligence gathering. She truly is someone fueled by loyalty to her country. She however is not as keen on the whole “sacrificing herself for her country” bit, she know she has to and may actually do so one day, but doesn’t like the idea of it.

From what I remember of her personality outside of being the badass dual-wielding assassin she is, she tends to be a lot more relaxed and chill when not in battle. As a strong woman, she doesn’t take too kindly to being stared at, cat-called or as I mentioned earlier, given a name like “hot chick”. It’s unclear if there’s any reasoning behind this other than just not wanting to be looked at like a hot piece of action, so that’s what we’re to assume. Other than that, it appears she may want to settle down one day, but the nature of her position in the guard makes her well-aware of how unlikely that would ever be.

So, here’s my call on Nel:

After all, I did list her on my Top 10 Video Game Girls I’d Marry list. While Nel is a very serious girl, when she’s not playing the loyal soldier role, I feel like the side of her I see is a lot more different and certainly a lot more attractive towards a married life with her. She comes off very chill and easy to be around and I imagine in a relationship, she’d open up even further. We see what she’s like with her close friends Tynave and Farleen (which I forgot to mention until now) and she’s very kind and caring with the two of them, so I imagine she’d be no different there. Certainly a lot more interesting and realistic than most people who end up on these posts and you know how I lean towards more realistic girls on these posts.

Finishing off this week is the eyepatch wearing, katana wielding badass squadron leader of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing who has quite the unique laugh (especially if you watch the English dub). From Strike Witches, we’ve got Mio Sakamoto.

As a commanding officer, Mio is almost like a father to her female-only squadron. Very cheerful and open-minded, she’s always available to her soldiers and is very uplifting with them, though willing to punish when she has to. Everything she does is under a cheerful guise, whether it’s tough training, or basic daily life sort of moments. However, it’s when battle begins that she goes full-serious until the enemy is defeated, she’s very calculating and stays cool and collected at all times.

There’s not too much to talk about her beyond this, so here’s my call on Mio:

She’s a very wonderful woman and for many people she will make their “waifu” lists, but for me there’s one major reason I can’t accept her in that tier and it’s not even a bad strike against her character. But in the anime, it’s very clear how much the girls she works with mean to her and I honestly don’t think she’d even be interested in a marriage with a male and if she was, she’d still want to spend a good chunk of her time with the girls, training them and teaching them. And I’m not the kind of person who wants to share, y’know?

But I will give her extra points for being the reason the 501st had a bath built in. So Mio’s responsible for all the bath scenes in the anime. God bless you, Mio!

So that’s this week’s edition of Waifu, FWB, or One-Night Stand, hope you enjoyed it! Leave any comments you’ve got below, whether it’s your own choices between the three or maybe I’m missing something that could’ve turned the tide on my decision with any one of these girls.
