Week #5 – Winter Anime 2017

Week #5 has arrived with this Winter anime season. What’s in store this week?!

As always I’m live reacting (though typing it out to be posted later) to each episode I watch and going over what happens in each episode with the occasional quip and joke here and there. So for those trying to avoid spoilers, this entire article is full of them!

NOTE: With the new place I’ve moved into, the internet right now is terrible to the point I’m watching it in SD on my laptop rather than in HD on my PS4 where I can easily screenshot things. So until I get the internet upgraded, there won’t be anymore screenshots.

Akiba's Trip: The Animation (Ep.1)

Akiba’s Trip: The Animation (Ep.5)

SYNOPSIS

It’s arcade time this week and Tamotsu’s playing dirty mahjong games. Wow, they actually got Street Fighter 2 licensed in this show. Then someone takes him on and whips his ass royally. Then as the anime does, things get weird and the arcade turns into a giant crane game and it takes Niwaka. The little girl he faced earlier shows up, seemingly the Bugged One this week. His orders from the kidnappers tells him he has to enter into a Street Fighter V tournament now, the winner getting to face her. It just so happens that for this, the Professor creating a special fighting game training machine. It’s a parade of death machines with zero training in the actual game. The first match begins the next day and he loses without landing a hit. It’s almost as if he didn’t learn anything from the actual game. But then apparently he won the entire losers’ bracket and won the tournament, no explanation. Oh, anime. Facing the girl now, he wins the first round, but she’s only playing around to figure out her opponent’s style, almost always dropping the first round. Then she strips to her underwear, once again, because anime. In the final round, he undresses as well and apparently he’s able to come back a bit. She continues to strip and he responds by taking his underwear off (which somehow lands directly on Matome’s face and she starts sniffing it) and wins. He nearly dies, but the girl saves him by throwing her hoodie on her (he’s still completely naked on the bottom) and Matome takes her hat off, revealing that she’s not a Bugged One, in fact it’s one of the announcers who’s actually the Bugged One and Tamotsu beats him with one punch. They “rescue” Niwaka who was just playing a difficult game. He’s still half-naked.

THE GOOD

  • I was impressed by an anime like this actually having Street Fighter in it
  • The ridiculousness of stripping to increase your gaming abilities, oh my god!

THE BAD

  • I don’t like how they just up and had Tamotsu win every match after losing without landing a hit, like there was no explanation as to how he figured out how to play all of a sudden

Episode Score: 4/5

Demi-chan wa Kataritai (Ep.1)

Demi-chan wa Kataritai (Ep.5)

SYNOPSIS

So it’s finally interview time between Tetsuo and Yuki. In her younger days, things were easier living in a rural town, but now moving into a bigger area for high school has been a much tougher transition. She reveals her fears more have to do with her own powers, that she could accidentally cause damage to others around her if she’s not in control of herself. After lunch, he asks Yuki to come back after school. While waiting for the time to come, he tries to research as much as he can on snow women, trying to identify where this sudden burst in her power might be coming from. As he talks to her about the history of snow women, he notices that she gets a cold aura around her when she’s nervous. So he tests this, getting a pot of hot water and has her put her bare feet into it. He has her read old stories about snow women and sure enough she starts to generate that cold aura and generates ice from a cold sweat that happens when she’s emotionally stressed. So it’s identified she’s not losing control of her powers, she’s just got a few extra quirks that tie to her emotions. Now a lot more relaxed, she starts to open up a little, including hanging out after school with the other two demi girls. We start to wonder if maybe, just maybe Hikari has a little more in her head than just being friendly with Yuki, staring at her neck a lot now and getting uncomfortable. Remember how sucking blood for vampires according to her is more akin to a romantic act? Yuki apologizes for being very cold (hahaha!) and distant in the beginning and offers her full friendship (which includes all rubbing against her she wants) to Hikari. She asks to bite Yuki, but not for blood, almost like her teeth are itching, it ends up being almost ticklish to Yuki. Kyouko also comes in as well, offering her friendship to Yuki. The next day there’s a fun conversation about using first and last names between Tetsuo and the three. Yuki has now opened up a ton now, even asking a boy to hang out with her and friends (though he thought it was a date…).

THE GOOD

  • Hikari biting is so freaking random, cute and hilarious
  • Yuki opening up really brings out the remaining necessary happiness this show requires

THE BAD

  • I will admit, there does seem to be a bit of unnecessary nudity in this show, not that it should be unusual to see a girl in the bath, but they spent a little too long with that in this episode

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Fuuka (Ep.1)

Fuuka (Ep.5)

SYNOPSIS

Oh dear, Koyuki lives close to Yuu, so she’s visiting now. They’re looking through old photos and reminiscing. Naturally, he lets it slip that he liked her and didn’t get to tell her before they parted ways for a while. She leaves after that, happy that her feelings weren’t one-sided. Back at school, Makoto and Kazuya (track guy) seem to be having a nice little BL relationship going on. Fuuka tells them that the HEDGEHOGS are going to teach them how to play, which I think might be a little much, maybe they should’ve given these kids a little talent. While looking for a place to sit, they take the only emptyish table with one stuck up girl who will obviously be in the band and some point, but she leaves for now. At their first practice, it goes terribly and a commotion happens where the guy’s little sister apparently rubbed a band the wrong way. Sure enough, it’s the same girl from earlier. Even worse, Yuu trips and runs right into her boobs. But she accepts Fuuka’s offer to join anyway. Sara is less than stellar at talking with people and is very negative towards Yuu, not happy with how he’s a first-time bass player and rubs it in his face constantly. To make matters worse for him, the crew see what’s happening and leave him and Sara alone. He tweets back and forth with a girl on Twitter that we’ve see for a while, The Admiral. And it’s actually been Sara the whole time. The second she realizes this, she completely changes her personality, happy as hell. Oh dear, we have another girl in the harem. She admits afterwards she’s aware how bad she is at talking with people. Makoto makes a call home, saying he won’t be coming back yet, sticking around where he is because he found something musical to do. Yuu meanwhile is practicing his bass a lot, to the point his fingertips are hurting a lot, which made me so happy to see that detail, as first-time guitar players need time for their fingertips to adjust to the amount of pressure they’re putting on the strings at first. At the next practice, the studio’s completely booked, so Kazuya offers his place, specifically the garage. The practice goes a lot better, everyone having practiced their parts and it’s starting to come together. Sara tries to tell Yuu how good he was, but Fuuka beats her to it, so instead Sara prods her with the head of her guitar. Then to end the episode, Fuuka announces their first show will be at the school fair in two months.

THE GOOD

  • As a musician, seeing these early stages brings so many memories back to me
  • Sara’s character is quite curious, I kind of prefer her stoic version with the ocassional happy unlocking
  • Fuuka continues to be such a beautiful character

THE BAD

  • Nothing at all this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Gabriel Dropout (Ep.1)

Gabriel Dropout (Ep.5)

SYNOPSIS

Someone’s walking around town in a space suit? A cat starts clawing her and she runs away. It must be another angel or something who’s really nervous about the human world. Sure enough, she looks a little bit like Gabriel. Now this girl has a gas mask on and is at the school, seeing Gabriel. She thinks Gabriel is trying to rob her and Raphiel arrives to see what the hell is going on, thinking this girl looks a lot like Tapris, another angel from their class. She came strictly to see Gabriel, without knowing the first girl she met was her. Naturally, Raphiel tries to fuck with Tapris, but Gabriel spills the beans immediately, shocking Tapris with her “faillen angel” status. Afterwards, Tapris pulls Raphiel aside, thinking a demon must have done this to Gabriel. Naturally, Raphiel gets an idea and brings Satania into the fold. She tried to have a special entrance from a locker, but it fails miserably, as Satania always does. She claims responsibility for Gabriel’s fall, showing a picture of her as a waitress as proof. However, that interests Gabriel, because clearly she likes her more than just as someone she looks up to. So when Satania has a nude photo of her, that really gets Tapris’ attention. The two are prepared to fight each other…in Old Maid! Raphiel is trying so hard no to burst out laughing. Satania in the end wins their ultimate battle and she runs off, Satania so happy to finally beat an angel and Raphiel has had the time of her life. While running away, Tapris gets lost and runs into Vignette, who she freaks out at as well. Of course, Vignette continues her role as the level-headed nice girl and Tapris starts falling for her too, much like she did with Gabriel before she left Heaven. However, Gabriel shows up to spill the beans that Vignette is a demon and now she’s distant as all hell, Gabriel not helping at all. She runs off, but does state she’d still like to have tea with Vignette some time. Going home with Gabriel, just being in her room is already tainting her halo. So she tries the same thing Vignette tried, cleaning, get her to eat right, but like Vigne before her, it ain’t gonna work. The following morning she wakes up and Gabriel did actually put a blanket over her at night, but she pisses away that good will immediately by leaving a garbage bag for Tapris, disguised as a gift.

THE GOOD

  • Tapris really brings out the best in Satania when I thought she was already at her best!
  • Raphiel finally did something entertaining through her mischief

THE BAD

  • Nothing this week either

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon (Ep.1)

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon (Ep.4)

SYNOPSIS

A bunch of kids are on a trip and they pass by the apartment and Kanna is watching. Kobayashi gets idea to maybe try putting her in school. Kanna gets pissed off though when they go shopping for clothes and stationery and they’re not getting her cute stuff. The amount of misinterpretations of everything Tohru finds are hilarious. A hundred bucks later, it’s backpack time. Apparently a normal looking backpack goes for almost 400 bucks?! Dafuq?! When she sees how much Kobayashi is spending on her, Kanna was about to grab a charm for her bag but decides not to ask her to buy it as well. Now with everything done, clothes included, it’s time to get ready for her first day. Tohru watches over her as she has her first day. Naturally, there’s one girl a little bit jealous of Kanna as she comes in, Riko’s her name. She challenges her to arm wrestling, but Kanna tears up just wanting to be friends with everyone. Tohru knows she was faking it and after school asks why Kanna wanted to go to school in the first place and she admits there’s some curiosity after living with Kobayashi for Kanna to see what else is out there with humans. At home, Kobayashi gives her that charm she wanted the other day. We then see an event where apparently all the dragons destroyed a park. Fafnir and Quetzalcoatl are at the apartment when Kanna comes home with Rika, who’s crying. Apparently on the way home they went to a park, but a bunch of older kids (specifically one asshole) bully them, so Rika challenges them to dodgeball tomorrow for access to the park. She didn’t figure out what they’d do after. So of course Tohru thinks the four dragons should team up and beat these guys. Kobayashi specifically tells them not to kill the guys, but as we’ve seen before, the dragons aren’t exactly good at holding back once they’re worked up. They win easily, but they’re still worked up so they fight each other, thus the park getting destroyed. Thankfully Quetzalcoatl is capable of restoring the place and erasing memories.

THE GOOD

  • An episode solely directed to have Kanna being cute? I’m in!
  • I never thought I’d see the day a boy would be scared of a girl walking towards him with giant bouncing boobs…

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week, show continues to get better and better!

Episode Score: 5/5

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2 (Ep.1)

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2 (Ep.4)

SYNOPSIS

Sure enough, all the money was indeed spent on booze. So he’s going to sell a special bottle she’s been hiding and steals her raiment as well. Then some random blonde witch girl walks in, none of the three know who she is. She’s actually Darkness. I should’ve known…giant boobs. Turns out the lord wanted her to marry his son. Initially, he’s not happy, but then realizes this is a chance for him to get rid of Darkness. Though he does also suggest she marry him and then ruin the relationship, so neither they or her family get hit. That prosecutor girl comes back calling again needing help, so he tries to send Megumin alone and she falls for it. Now just the three of them, Aqua and Kazuma acting as Darkness’ butler and maid for the time being. Her father asks Kazuma to ensure she doesn’t cause a scene during the whole thing. The son arrives and she tries to just knock him out, but Kazuma continues to thwart her. It’s so obvious that Darkness doesn’t want to marry because she’d stop adventuring and her perverted side would have to be suppressed. She hates this guy because he’s too nice, handsome and treats ladies properly. Eventually she snaps as rips her dress, wanting to fight the man and prove his worth to her, but he’s too nice. However, he does admit he came down to refuse the marriage, yet he’s taken a liking to her. So they have their sparring match and she’s just keeps taking it and taking it. Even worse, he wants to see what Kazuma has done to make Darkness respect her so much. So he uses water magic he’s learned from Aqua to make her dress see-through. Eventually she starts fighting back and he tries many tricks in the book to stop her. But then he figures to have some more fun with it, saying the winner gets to tell the loser to do anything they want. He uses her weaknesses to make her try less to fight and when it seems like she’s about to lose she’s overcome with pleasure and passes out. The man admits defeat, that Kazuma can certainly make Darkness happier than he ever could. Without knowing that the marriage is called off, she lies that she and Kazuma are expecting a child and he leaves. Prosecutor comes by with Megumin to end the episode. Uh-oh, what’d she do now?

THE GOOD

  • We really get the full extent of Darkness’ depravity and pervertedness
  • I find it so interesting all the different skills Kazuma has

THE BAD

  • I can’t like an episode that doesn’t have Megumin really in it… *sadface*

Episode Score: 4/5

Masamune-kun no Revenge (Ep.1)

Masamune-kun no Revenge (Ep.5)

SYNOPSIS

So new girl is still in his arms and she has boobs too, Aki’s at a real disadvantage here. But this girl is super religious, she’s already in my bad boobs–I mean books! I like her driver better anyway, I’m getting the sexy tomboy look from her. After they leave, holy shit Aki is pissed off and she leaves, almost getting hit two more times crossing the street. Trying to win her back with food, Yoshino appears and starts shooting at him with a BB gun, Aki telling her he’s not allowed to come near her. He has the chance to go inside anyway, but just leaves the food outside. The next day, he’s still trying to remember who this girl is from the other day. So naturally, she’s a new student in his class, Neko, yes that’s her name. Somehow though there’s no open desk next to him so she’s a couple desks down, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?! THIS IS AN ANIME!!! The girls all gravitate to her too, so he can’t be alone to talk with her. When he finally approaches, she apparently told all the girls she transferred in specifically for him. Apparently three years ago around Christmas time, he donated some money to whatever thing she was running and gave her his coat. Apparently at this point he was already thin, however Masamune tells us he was still fat at that point. So he finally just grabs her by the arm and leads her away. Apparently she easily weakens and starts bleeding from the mouth…only it’s ketchup. Getting her back on topic, he asks her why he’s telling a lie about how they met and she calls the truth embarrassing to the point she doesn’t want to say it. So he just up and says he has someone else he likes. Upon seeing who her competition is, Neko thinks she won’t be a problem and walks right over to Aki and talks to her. Then wind blows and apparently this very-religious girl doesn’t wear panties. Aki tries to leave and somehow in the two being alone, they get dragged into cleaning the pool together, because that’s the best way to connect. So he sprays her with water. He then looks at her as she’s just in a swimsuit and says she’s lacking, but her legs are nice. He’s full of shit, she has a really nice butt too. She wants to dump water on him, but she makes the bucket too heavy and causes her to fall in the water and appears like she can’t swim. He goes to save her, but she was in the shallow end. He says he moved on his own and she’s mad that’s all, but when he says he likes her too, not that she’d believe him. So she tells him to prove it, saying he should kiss her. CLIFFHANGAR!!!

THE GOOD

  • So her name is Neko, she’s religious, yet is super dirty, manipulative, vindictive and doesn’t wear panties? Huh…she’s actually kinda interesting…
  • Aki butt. That is all…

THE BAD

  • It annoys me a little bit when characters say a girl has nothing to offer because she’s flat-chested

Episode Score: 4/5

Minami Kamakura High School Girls Cycling Club (Ep.1)

Minami Kamakura High School Girls Cycling Club (Ep.5)

SYNOPSIS

Well now, someone’s arrived in Japan from overseas. She has a cat tail and ears for some reason. The principal announces they have three months to “produce results” otherwise the club will be disbanded. The girls can’t even buy bikes yet as the shop hasn’t re-opened, likely because catgirl hasn’t shown up. Sure enough, there she is, Korone, the tiny catgirl manager. She finally opens up shop and she has quite the selection. She gives them a crash course in all the different types of bikes so they can pick one that suits them best, though she does suggest they go with road racers. They try several bikes but Hiromi can’t seem to find one she likes, or at least one that stands out. But she finally comes across one that gives her the experience she desires. However, it’s a four thousand dollar bike, so the girls (except Fuyune likely) will have trouble getting one. Shiki suddenly arrives with a race flyer that the girls might be interested in trying out, a way to produce results.

All right, last straw for the show. I just took it off notice, but it’s going back. Why? Because the show is not doing anything other than saying “bikes are cool!” and that’s not enough for me. Next week is Episode 6, if the show is at the halfway point and the girls still aren’t going on any adventures, that’s it.

THE GOOD

  • Korone is freaking adorable, I love the cute little adult girl trope

THE BAD

  • Once again, I like the characters and the vibe, but I want to actually see the girls do something. Nothing interesting is happening here yet

Episode Score: 3/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Nanbaka (Ep.14)

Nanbaka (Ep.18)

SYNOPSIS

The boys end up falling into a cell with Liang and Upa, who are shackled. Hajime meanwhile is put in his own cell with shackles that will blow his hands off if any impact comes to them. Samon is also in a cell, beaten. Jyugo unlocks the shackles off Liang and Upa  as well. It appears Samon’s brother has been in the underground cell all this time and has now escaped. The new recruit as well to Building 5 is among those helping his escape. Jyugo once again, easily unlocks the cell and now needs to help Nico, who’s lost his medicine bag. We see Qi is also among the villains as well and has the medicine bag. We go back a few hours to see how everything happened, Samon investigating the missing talismans before Enki escaped. Investigating into that now, he finds Ruka, the aquamarine-haired boy (who of course is naked) who also escaped and then Enki shows up and destroys Samon. Back in the present, Hajime knows the Samon has been holding back and gives him shit for it, saying the next time the two brothers meet, he should kill him and not hold back. The five now walking around the cell, find Hajime’s nameplate and continue to look for the guards, their only real way of escaping without their sentences being raised even further. Along the way, they find Honey and and Trois who also got captured, it appears Kiji was as well. They free the two pretty boys and it’s time to continue on…next week!

THE GOOD

  • Jyugo solving every puzzle easily kept breaking the ice of every tense moment and I loved it

THE BAD

  • There pretty much was no real comedy and all story, which for me is when this show is at its weakest
  • The villains just aren’t interesting to me, they’re just powerful brutes, nothing more

Episode Score: 3/5

Youjo Senki (Ep.1)

Youjo Senki (Ep.5)

SYNOPSIS

Tanya is not all that happy to see Viktoriya back in her care. Even worse, she already got a bunch of people to come out, so Tanya will be spending even less time in the office. Now having to pick her unit, Tanya’s really stretching it out and failing a ton of people. They order her to speed up the process and she starts putting soldiers through horrible training that could even kill some of the soldiers. Crazy, evil Tanya’s coming out, folks! During the training, an avalanche occurs and buries them all alive. Somehow surviving, Tanya’s shocked that they’re all continuing the training, clear that she was trying to drive them all out so the unit wouldn’t be formed. The majority of them survive, much to her dismay. Back at HQ, she meets with Erich and argues with their first deployment, but to no avail. They’re expected to ship out to an entirely new area and the first attack from this new country seems like they’re weak and unprepared for war, but Tanya cannot believe they’re this inept. She views this though as a live training exercise for the new soldiers. This enemy looks years behind in tactics and weaponry and can’t even fight back against this air force. She gets further annoyed when she sees one of her units falling back for a moment and joins in the battle herself. She questions whether this is really an invasion or men just walking to their deaths. So she sees them personally and it goes as well for the enemy as you’d expect. So she decides to have fun and just go straight to the capital and see if she can just take the entire country herself. She has her sights set on an arms factory and decides to give them a heads up of their attack…in a child’s voice, so they don’t take it seriously and they can just kill them all. She uses God’s power as well to destroy them.

THE GOOD

  • This was so fucking great, watching Tanya finally delve back into twisted, sadistic and evil!
  • Viktoriya’s reaction to Tanya speaking like a child was hilarious!

THE BAD

  • Not a damn thing this week, this is exactly what I want to see from this show!

Episode Score: 5/5
