2017 Spring Anime Preview

So we are just a couple weeks away from the start of the 2017 spring anime season! So before we get to the end of this current season, it’s time for me to preview all the anime listed to air during this season and see where my interest is at for each of them.

Before we get started however, I’m laying down a few ground rules:

  • If a show is a second season or further and I haven’t either watched the anime yet or dropped the previous season, I will not be previewing those shows.
  • I will try to preview as many as I can, but there may be a couple where the synopsis may turn me off before even clicking the link to the trailer.
  • Please understand that these trailers are all in Japanese and usually don’t come with subtitles, so a lot of what I talk about is more what I see and perceive rather than what’s actually being said and going on in the trailer.
  • Also understand that I am deciding on shows based on my own personal tastes. Obviously there will be shows you think are at the top of your list, but they don’t interest me and vice-versa.
  • At the end of each preview I will give the show a “Yay” or “Nay”. Should be self-explanatory as to which one means I’ll be watching those shows
  • And for any show that does get previewed on this list, even if I give it the go-ahead, if it’s not on Crunchyroll where I can easily access it on my PS4 (which makes my screencaps really easy too), I will not watch it and will not have it on my weekly reviews. I’m aware there are other routes, but my time is limited and I also don’t like resorting to torrents and such.

Anyways, let’s get this show on the road!

Alice to Zouroku

SYNOPSIS

A group of young girls possess a mysterious power known as “Alice’s Dream,” which gives them the ability to turn their thoughts into reality. Detained and experimented upon, these youths are locked away in secret until one of them manages to escape. Her name is Sana—a girl with the power to ignore the very laws of physics. When this willful powerhouse crosses paths with a stubborn old man named Zouroku, his carefully-ordered life will never be the same again.

THOUGHTS – YAY

From the PV here, there’s not a whole lot to grasp onto, but I like the animation style and the story seems like something that could really turn out to be something really interesting, so it’s worth a peek at this point. Whether it lasts or not is an entirely different question.

Ani ni Tsukeru Kusuri wa Nai!

SYNOPSIS

The story centers on a violent girl who strikes her idiot older brother. The story also focuses on sibling love, love, and food.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

Based on the animation style, there’s no way this isn’t a short. But it looks stupid and cheesy and you know that’s right up my alley. Worst case scenario it’s something I watch on my own time, since I don’t do shorts on the weeklies.

Busou Shoujo Machiavellism

SYNOPSIS

The Private Aichi Symbiosis Academy was originally a high school for high-class girls. When it became co-ed, the girls, out of fear, asked to be permitted to bring weapons to school. When that was enforced, a five-member vigilante corps-like organization called the “Supreme Five Swords” was also formed.

After many generations, the five swords eventually became a group which corrected problematic students, and the academy started proactively accepting such students in order to correct them.

Nomura Fudou was sent to this school after being part of a huge brawl. What will he do when the only options he has after enrolling are being expelled from that school or being corrected the way the rest of the male students there were…by being forced to dress and act like a girl!

(Source: Batoto, edited by MyAnimeList)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I got nothing from the video, but this sounds slightly interesting in the way that Asterisk War got my attention initially. Granted, the “dressed and act like a girl” part of the synopsis is what really interests me, as it leaves the door open for potential comedy. I have a feeling this one won’t go very well, but it’s worth a first episode viewing.

Clockwork Planet

SYNOPSIS

Everyone on the Clockwork Planet considers Naoto Miura a machinery nut. Every moment of every day, he has his mind on gears and his hands tinkering with delicate mechanical motors, but nobody understand how he can hear and feel gears in operation, even from a long distance away. Then one day, a clockwork maiden falls from the sky, presaging events that would shake the whole world…

THOUGHTS – YAY

I absolutely adore the art style of this show, I just have to hope now that it doesn’t turn into something like Comet Lucifer where I drop it or Luck & Logic, where it just does enough to stay afloat. But this one definitely has my attention!

Eromanga-sensei

SYNOPSIS

The “new sibling romantic comedy” revolves around Masamune Izumi, a light novel author in high school. Masamune’s little sister is Sagiri, a shut-in girl who hasn’t left her room for an entire year. She even forces her brother to make and bring her meals when she stomps the floor. Masamune wants his sister to leave her room, because the two of them are each other’s only family.

Masamune’s novel illustrator, pen name “Eromanga”, draws extremely perverted drawings, and is very reliable. Masamune had never met his illustrator, and figured he was just a disgusting, perverted otaku. However, the truth is revealed… that his “Eromanga-sensei” is his own younger sister! To add to the chaos that erupts between the siblings, a beautiful, female, best-selling shoujo manga creator becomes their rival!

THOUGHTS – YAY

So it’s even crazier than Oreimo, potentially? I’M IN!!!

Frame Arms Girl

SYNOPSIS

The story begins when Ao opens a package that arrives at her doorstep. Inside the package is Gourai, a Frame Arms Girl: a small robot capable of independent movement. Gourai is a newly-developed prototype: a Frame Arms Girl equipped with an “Artificial Self,” an advanced AI that gives her a personality. Ao is the only one that has activated her. Gourai begins to gather both battle data and emotions, starting a day-to-day life with Ao, who knows nothing about Frame Arms Girls.

THOUGHTS – NAY

Right off the bat, I don’t like the animation style that much and the feel I keep getting from it, is that it’ll be a tad bit more on the annoying side, not to mention the gimmick of this show really doesn’t do anything for me either. Pass!

Fukumenkei Noise

SYNOPSIS

Nino, a girl who loves singing, made a childhood promise with her first crush Momo and song-composing Yuzu to someday find her voice. The three went their separate ways, but Nino kept her promise and continued to sing. Years later, the three are now high school students, and Nino is drawn into the world of band clubs.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

Same deal with the above, I really can’t stand the animation style, even more with this one. And I’m getting that this anime is designed for teenage girls, so it’s just another reason for me to pass on this one.

Gin no Guardian

SYNOPSIS

Sui Gin may be poor, but he is one of the best online video game players. This identity however, is unknown to all except for RikuLei, Sui Gin’s classmate. She delivers a mysterious mobile device to Sui Gin but before being able to explain herself, RikuLei is kidnapped and Sui Gin unwittingly finds himself wrapped up in series of problematic circumstances. Searching for a way to save her, he accidentally activates the device allowing him to dive into a new Virtual game-world.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

I’m pretty much done with MMORPG game anime, so it was going to take something pretty unique to get my attention and this basically just seems like a very bland storyline that’s just trying to get the attention of Sword Art Online fans. At least Overlord put some effort into its plot!

Granblue Fantasy the Animation

SYNOPSIS

This is a world of the skies, where many islands drift in the sky. A boy named Gran and a talking winged lizard named Vyrn lived in Zinkenstill, an island which yields mysteries. One day, they come across a girl named Lyria. Lyria had escaped from the Erste Empire, a military government that is trying to rule over this world using powerful military prowess. In order to escape from the Empire, Gran and Lyria head out into the vast skies, holding the letter Gran’s father left behind – which said, “I will be waiting at Estalucia, Island of Stars”.

(Source: Aniplex of America)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I was already interested in this based on the name. Granblue Fantasy has been constantly in my eyes for a while now, so when I found out it was getting an anime adaptation, I was going to watch it anyways. The animation looks pretty good, the characters seem interesting, here’s hoping it doesn’t turn out to be what Chain Chronicle was for me in the winter season.

Hinako Note

SYNOPSIS

Hinako is a shy little girl whom animals are instinctively drawn to. Because of this, Hinako works as a scarecrow to keep said animals away from the crops in her neighbors fields. Thus the tale of the scarecrow girl begins!

(Source: MyAnimeList)

THOUGHTS – YAY

When you have silly facial expressions littered in your trailer, you’ll get my attention and this one certainly did. I’m wondering if it might be a short, it has that feel, but I also worry this show might not have legs the way other comedies do. But it’s certainly worth checking out.

ID-0

SYNOPSIS

I-Machines are the general term for robots that operate in extreme environments. While Alliance Academy student Maya Mikuri is in the middle of operating an I-Machine, she gets involved in an incident with pirates, and ends up serving as a crew member on an excavation company’s spaceship.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I’m on the fence with this one, but because it’s space pirates and has a Bubuki Buranki style of animation, it’s just good enough to be worth a first episode viewing. Based on the characters and the music however, I have a feeling this will be a show that wasn’t designed for me.

Kabukibu!

SYNOPSIS

Kurogo is a young boy who loves Kabuki, a traditional Japanese performing arts. When he enters high school, he finds out that there is no Kabuki performing club. Kurogo and his best friend Tombo decide to form a Kabuki club (Kabukibu) by themselves.

Will they be able to find others who want to join and perform in front of an audience?

(Source: Shochiku; edited)

THOUGHTS – YAY

It’s a hard sell when it’s an all-boys anime, but the kabuki theme is a little intriguing, I must admit. Hopefully the show really grabs me in the first episode, as I’m afraid that might be all I give it.

Kenka Banchou Otome: Girl Beats Boys

SYNOPSIS

Kenka Banchou Otome – Girl Beats Boys, Hinako Nakayama has spent all of her life being raised in state-run orphanages, without ever knowing her family. As she’s about to enter high school, Hinako is approached by Hikaru, a boy who claims to be her twin brother.

According to Hikaru, Hikaru and Hinako are the children of the head of the powerful Onigashima yakuza family, and Hikaru wants Hinako to switches places with him at Shishiku Academy, an all-boys school overrun with the nation’s toughest delinquents. Can Hinako save her brother, find romance, and become the new boss of the school?

(Source: Crunchyroll)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I don’t know if it was intentional, but come on…Girl Beats Boys, Boy Meets Girl, kind of a play on words, eh? Either way, while the trailer shows fuck all, the plot sounds like something that could be quite interesting, or be a total flop and more of a girly romance anime that just happens to have a lot of delinquents. We’ll have to see.

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine

SYNOPSIS

Accepting the post of Royal Tutor at the court of the king of Grannzreich, Heine Wittgenstein is a little professor with a big job ahead! Each of the kingdom’s four princes has a rather distinct personality. Does their diminutive new instructor have what it takes to lay down some learning? It’s a comedy of educational proportions!

(Source: Yen Press)

THOUGHTS – YAY

There’s always that show I watch the trailer of and go “Ugh…this is so bad…” and then it cheats by adding in super cheesy adorable facial expressions and such to make me slightly curious. I’m not sure where this show will go in the end, it feels like a mixture of ridiculous anime bullshit, but at the same time it has a feeling of sadness and depression…and comedy don’t go well with that, at least not with me. We’ll see where it goes.

Re:Creators

SYNOPSIS

Humans have created many stories. Joy, sadness, anger, deep emotion. Stories shake our emotions, and fascinate us. However, these are only the thoughts of bystanders. But what if the characters in the story have “intentions”? To them, are we god-like existences for bringing their story into the world? Our world is changed. Mete out punishment upon the realm of the gods. In Re:CREATORS, everyone becomes a Creator.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

I don’t really go well with mech anime, as my many seasons have shown so it already had a tough mountain to climb. The trailer doesn’t grab me in any way, in fact the visuals only make me less interested, because there’s also a clear religious plot attached to the entire story. Even more reason for me to not be interested.

Renai Boukun

SYNOPSIS

A Kiss Note is a powerful notebook that makes anyone who has their name written together will instantly fall in love if they kiss each other regardless of any circumstances. This magical and very familiar item belongs to an angel named Guri whose job as cupid is to create couples. However, she accidentally writes down Aino Seiji, a regular high school student, and unless he kisses someone, Guri will die. She convinces Seiji to go kiss his crush, Hiyama Akane, the school’s popular girl who turns out has even stronger feelings for him, bordering on obsessive and psychotic. Eventually Akane and Seiji come together but not before Guri decides that she likes Seiji as well. What seems awesome to most guys becomes hell for Seiji who just wants a normal relationship with girls.

THOUGHTS – YAY

Crazy looking comedy that takes a slight homage to Death Note, just for funsies? Along with this ridiculously cute devil girl, this show’s definitely got my attention, gives me a similar vibe to Gabriel Dropout. I’m in!

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata ♭

SYNOPSIS

Second season of “Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata.”

THOUGHTS – YAY

A second season to a show I adored and have been waiting for a second season of it for at least a couple years now? Of course I’m in. If you haven’t checked out this show before, it’s a fantastic slice-of-life anime about a foursome of students working together on a visual novel, really funny, great characters, just an all-around fantastic show.

Sakurada Reset

SYNOPSIS

Nearly half the population of Sakurada, a small town near the Pacific Ocean, has some sort of unique power. These powers range from being able to enter the mind of a cat, to resetting the world back to a certain point in time in the past. There is a group known as the “Kanrikyoku” that controls and monitors the use of these powers. Asai Kei and Haruki Misora work for their school’s club called “Houshi” club, which execute any missions received from the Kanrikyoku. Misora has the ability to reset the world 3 days. This means that all events and any memory of the past 3 days that “could have” happened, never happened. Kei has the ability to “remember” the past. Even after Misora uses her powers to reset the world back 3 days, Kei will retain those 3 days in his memory. Combining their powers, these two solve missions issued by the Kanrikyoku.

THOUGHTS – YAY

This’ll be a tough sell for me, but when shows like ERASED can come along and grab my attention, it makes me more willing to give shows like this a shot. Hopefully it gets me early like ERASED did, it’ll have to in order to see me continue on.

Sakura Quest

(No trailer available)

SYNOPSIS

The story centers on five girls who work in the tourism bureau of their small provincial town. The town revives its “micro-nation” tourism program, which originated from a nationwide movement during Japan’s bubble economy period, and hires the five girls as “monarchs” (tourism ambassadors). The anime will depict one year in their jobs in the tourism industry, and show how they change and grow.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

It’s going to be a tough one to go by since there’s no trailer, but if it’s a comedy, I’m willing to give it a shot on that alone. The plot doesn’t really give me much to go on though, it better blow me away.

Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai

SYNOPSIS

You, will you be a worshipper of the devil lords? These beautiful lords lead humans to the seven deadly sins: pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust. A revealing fantasy that craves to corruption and happiness starts now.

(Source: MyAnimeList News)

THOUGHTS – YAY

Guys…it was a hot girl…playing a guitar…HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO SAY NO?!!!

Sword Oratoria

SYNOPSIS

Sword princess Aiz Wallenstein. Today, once again, the strongest female swordsman heads to the giant labyrinth known as the “Dungeon” along with her allies. On the 50th floor where mysteries and threats such as a decayed dragon’s corpse that crumbles to ash and an irregularity that creeps ever closer to the party loom, Aiz calls for the wind and heads deeper into the darkness of the Dungeon. Eventually, she finds herself meeting a boy for the first time. “Um, are you OK?” In the Labyrinth City of Orario, the contrasting stories of the boy and the girl intersect!

(Source: GA Bunko)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I’m confused though. Is this a sequel to Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? or is this a prequel? What is this in relation to that show? Obviously Aiz is there, her friends are there. What the hell’s going on?

Tsugumomo

SYNOPSIS

Kazuya Kagami’s most treasured possession in the world is the obi left to him by his late mother. The scent of cherry-blossoms infused into it helps him through his day – but he never expected it to save his life, becoming a beautiful kimono-clad girl who calls herself an “artifact spirit.” Her name is Kiriha, tsukumogami of the sash, who naturally moves in with him, as he is her “owner.” Throw in Chisato, his bespectacled friend, an overprotective older sister who wants to take baths with him, a busty priestess, a seductive sorceress named Kokuyoura, and Kazuya’s life has just gotten a lot more interesting.

(Source: manga synopsis via Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I’m unsure whether this one will actually be funny funny, or just really bad funny. I have a feeling it’s the latter as I feel the show is going to be a one-joke anime, but I’ll give it an episode to see what it’s up to.

And that’s it! So at this time, the total number of shows I’ll be watching at the start of the spring season will be…18!

Pretty standard size, I was actually worried early on while looking at the lists before writing this article that I’d be struggling to put together at least 15, but there’s enough interest to at least have a healthy first week. Granted not every one of these 18 shows will end up on Crunchyroll, it might even end up lower than 15, but either way, we’ll have a good amount to start off with and hopefully we don’t end up dropping too many early on, though there’s certainly quite a few I’m on the fence on currently.

See you in April!

One comment

  1. Sounds like you have a busy start of Spring. There are a lot of shows to check out next season which I’m really excited about. I’m just hoping that I find a few more next season that I enjoy.
