Week #7 – Spring Anime 2017

Week #7 has arrived with this Spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

I got my wish, Re=L’s gonna be around a lot more. It would’ve been entirely her episode but y’know they had to get a beach trip going so all the other girls shined as well. In the end though, she is definitely center and stage, but we’re not quite sure as to why yet, but it appears that a dying brother of hers is involved. This was a fun getaway episode that is leading into what will likely be four episodes of intensity as the villains make their move, likely to try and kill Rumia once again. And I mean come on, Glenn played the swimsuit episode perfectly, leading the boys ahead to the glory that is their classmates in bikinis.

Oh and because we always do this, the winner of this beach episode is…Rumia! Without any competition whatsoever!

THE GOOD

  • Re=L being a consistent character now makes me really happy
  • BEACH EPISODE!!!
  • It’s nice to have a cool down episode when you know the meat and potatoes of the show are about to begin

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Eromanga-sensei (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Huh. I would’ve gone so many different routes with Muramasa, but I didn’t expect the hardcore loving fan of his work. I’m not sure how I fully feel about that side of her just yet, but it certainly beats the initial bitch character we saw last week. As for the rest of the episode, seeing Sagiri actually leave her room was a pretty impactful moment and at the end of the episode I love how it took Muramasa getting disqualified for Masamune to actually win that contest. It’s such a pity point, I love it.

THE GOOD

  • Sagiri finally broke out this week
  • The way Masamune won the contest makes sense, he shouldn’t have won a fair fight with Muramasa

THE BAD

  • I’m on the fence with Muramasa still

Episode Score: 4/5

Granblue Fantasy (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

I’m starting to struggle with this show as well now. I’m nowhere near the point of Sakura Quest, but Granblue right now is not working comedy and excitement all that well these past couple episodes. This specific quest with Io has been a mishmash of scenes put together, it truly did feel like a randomizer was being used to come up with this sidestory. The battle with the iron giant was cool looking, but realistically speaking, the rest of the episode didn’t offer much, aside from a squeaky anime girl constantly yelling “SHISHO!!!”.

THE GOOD

  • The battle with the iron giant was well animated, looked very good

THE BAD

  • Dead parents again (Io)
  • SHISHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Episode Score: 3/5

Hinako Note (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Wow, two beach episodes in one week! This one though really was a fanservice episode through and through, lots of swimsuits being tried on, boobs a’flailing, the tiny girls getting mad when they can’t wear a sexy swimsuit, all that jazz. The second half was pretty standard, playing in the water and then a tiny story with Mayuki as she gets lost after being constantly frustrated all episode that she’s treated like a child. Really nothing too spectacular this week.

It’s a tough call, but in the end I’ve gotta give the edge to Hinako in this case. Yua actually pulled off a pretty good run and Chiaki’s a natural walking beauty queen, but Hinako’s swimsuit matched her the best so in the end, she gets the edge.

THE GOOD

  • Some really funny moments with Kuina messing with Hinako’s fear of sharks and such

THE BAD

  • This was a full-on fanservice episode, so if you’re looking for anything interesting beyond ecchi and some jokes, there’s not much

Episode Score: 3.5/5

KADO: The Right Answer (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Now we get to the interesting philosophical stuff! I’m amazed and impressed how detailed the move for Kado was, clearly the writers and producers of the show took the time to think this through, so it could be a plausible scenario. But now that Wam has been made available for anyone (arguably) to produce their own, now we move onto a new step for humanity, zaShunina claiming it’s to allow humanity not to be able to sleep. Talk about a tough call for us, eh? I mean sure, we’d love to not lose another 4-10 hours of our lives every day, depending on hw much you sleep, but by completely removing sleep, we’ll never dream again. It’s a tough call, to the point I intend to write an article about this idea.

THE GOOD

  • The amount of planning into a move like Kado’s was, it was very impressively detailed and not half-ass thought out
  • We really have a concept to shoot around with when it comes to the whole ‘no sleep’ idea

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Definitely the weakest episode of the anime thus far, though not necessarily because the writing was bad, it’s just that the charm simply wasn’t there as prevalent as all the other episodes. Maybe the episode being Bruno-centric didn’t help either, he’s definitely the least interesting of the four princes. We are getting a little more plot as well and I continue to worry about whether that will throw the show out of wack. It appears the fifth and eldest prince is a bit of a douchebag and wants the other four gone and perhaps may be resorting to assassinating Heine now. I’m not sure I like where this show is starting to go…

THE GOOD

  • The comedy was still around, just in shorter supply, in particular when Leonhard was getting praised

THE BAD

  • A very boring episode through most of it
  • The continuation of this story with Eins and trying to get the four princes away from the throne is not convincing me that I’m going to like it

Episode Score: 3/5

Renai Boukun (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

This was such a weird episode for me to describe, because there were times where I felt like I stopped focusing. I felt like the episode was really long, especially in the first half as well, I thought I was at the 15-minute mark at least and I was only about 8-9 minutes in. The Guri date with the random guy had its moments, but wasn’t all that great and now with this story of Akane’s mother being a bitch and holding her captive doesn’t really resonate with me either. Out of all the girls, Akane’s the one I could care the least about, so this “WE NEED TO SAVE HER!!!” story isn’t exactly grabbing my attention. Hopefully the comedy picks up and saves next week’s episode from what I fear will be quite…meh.

THE GOOD

  • The Guri date had some funny moments in it
  • Shikimi really saved the episode from sheer boredom in the second half

THE BAD

  • Episode really dragged on for me
  • If the show expects me or most of the viewers to feel sympathy for Akane, it’s not going to happen

Episode Score: 3/5

  1. Couldn’t agree more with Re=L future constant presence being a good thing. Next episode is even better (saying it will be good it’s not spoiling it, right?).

I quite like Ero-manga sensei too, every new entry in heroines for our Onii-chan could be a little annoying for harem-haters though. By the way, for some reasons I’m not bothered at all with the sister-brother love thing, totally weird, as I hated it in Oreimo. Oh, well. Who cares about my brain.

Hinako Note’s fanservice increased from first full of Moe episode. As long as it isn’t too excessive, I don’t mind it though. She did deserve a beach-day after her success with the play.

Haaa, Kado. I love it. It’s been only a week, yet I’m missing it so much…

Oh, and I really like this format of weekly update.

Cheers, man, always happy to hear that people enjoy my stuff.

Akashic’s continued to be such a surprise for me, I can’t believe I didn’t even put it on my list at first. If so many other shows didn’t suck this season, I wouldn’t have watched what could be my Show of the Season.

      1. Yep, not to mention I find quite relatable your site’t title. Although I wanted to make a blog about the whole (more or less) otaku world, it became a personal rant plus sometimes some thoughts about anime instead, hahahaaa… I’m still trying to understand what my blog is about… Screw it, I’ll leave this problem to the less busy future me.

I have to agree: first episode of Akashic’s was quite… bad in my opinion. But I’m so glad to not have dropped it, as it freaking surprised me (in a very good way) with its following episodes. And it keeps that quality/feeling (more or less, until now that is). This truly teach us to not judge a show by its cover.
