Week #11 – Spring Anime 2017

Week #11 has arrived with this Spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Sigh…everything was going so fine, until the inevitable controlling douchebag comes in and forces a girl to do whatever he pleases. Not to mention we’re one episode left and the show’s all like “Glenn’s gone and never coming back!” to us. I’m going to finish the show, but mark my words, unless something amazing happens in this final episode, there will be no better candidate this season for the “Best Start, Shit Finish” award that this show. I’m stunned by how badly this show has turned around since absolutely loving it in the first half.

THE GOOD

  • The first half was promising, Glenn was back to his usual goofy self

THE BAD

  • The second half basically was a round of what I truly understand feminists getting upset about, men taking women by the hand and forcing them to live as they see fit
  • There better be a damn good reason why Glenn just up and leaves like this and “You revealed my secret!” ain’t going to cut it

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Eromanga-sensei (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

This was a cute episode, nothing too special, just a sweet retelling of their childhood and how they became a writer and artist respectively. Though I will admit all this episode did is make me want to see their parents come home now for this last episode, seriously…Sagiri’s mother is awesome! The idea that Sagiri was Masamune’s first fan makes sense, their motivations came rationally, all that worked out pretty well. The show really tried its best to make you understand their affection for each other. However I still have to say that I look at these two as best friends, not as anything more, the romanticism still feels forced, whereas for example Masamune and Elf have appeared (in my view) to have developed a natural romantic kinship.

But that’s not as important right? The entire episode I was just watching along and then the full main cast of Oreimo showed up. I marked the fuck out.

THE GOOD

  • Oreimo. Fucking Oreimo!
  • Sagiri’s mom is so freaking cool (and a giant pervert like her daughter)

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Granblue Fantasy (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

I don’t think I truly realized how much I enjoyed this cast of characters until the halfway point of the episode when Gran and Lyria re-connected. My secret softie form nearly came out in full, eyes almost started watering, was kinda shocked myself. We learned a little bit more about things going on, though not enough to really define was Lyria is yet. Perhaps she’s the child of the divine powers, something like that. We also now know that either Gran’s father is alive and well, or he at the very least accomplished his dream, as Rosetta was one of those who was with him for his own journey. A very fun and emotional episode, was very happy this week.

THE GOOD

  • Nearly cried during Lyria’s big moment, usually don’t get that welled up
  • I’m glad to see that crystal destroyed, seems we’ll hopefully not have to see the usual “You’re a monster” bullshit again

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Hinako Note (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

This was another normal episode of the show, quite cute, a little funny, just a nice sit down and watch. It’s nice as we head to the final episode next week that Hinako is at least starting to grow up, finally. However it’s very realistic in that her change isn’t extreme right off the bat and considering how she lives with essentially two child-like minds, her progress will naturally be slower as well. Thank god Chiaki and Hinako (who’s secretly hot as hell) make up for the child-like material we get and at least mature it out a little bit.

THE GOOD

  • Everyone playing their roles well this week
  • The deer…I mean come on!

THE BAD

  • Nothing really to report, other than the episode not having anything too amazing to note, aside from the deer

Episode Score: 3.5/5

KADO: The Right Answer (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

Well now we understand why Saraka is so significant at the end of the OP, huh? I will admit I didn’t like a bit of Saraka’s childhood, in that her father spoke like he was some super brilliant mind, talking about how us humans die easily and words like that, no father would talk like this. While zaShunina’s motivations are still a little confusing, it’s pretty basic to figure he’s a man who just spent so much time on something and wanted to finally make that big push, not truly understand the consequences of his curiosity. Saraka on the other hand, she senses that what he wants to do will destroy what amazed him in the first place. And it draws out the ultimate question of our existence as human beings: Would we truly accomplish anything at all if we knew our lives were endless? Perhaps the reason we’ve accomplished so much as a race of people is because we have at best a century to live.

Oh and away from the seriousness, I swear if Koujirou and Saraka aren’t married by the end of this series, I will be greatly disappointed.

THE GOOD

  • Saraka…just…Saraka, holy shit…
  • The flood of thoughts running through my head through this episode based on our evolution, it’s incredible what this show is doing for me

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

It was quite the somber episode. Obviously Heine has resigned as the royal tutor and we learn the backstory with how Viktor and Heine met. Sweet Jesus if you’re into anime guys were you ever spoiled this episode! Apparently Heine in his teens was the most feminine looking boy on the planet, even rivaling Leonhard and his nightgown pajamas. The backstory itself was nothing too big of a deal, same went for the truth as to why Heine was imprisoned in the first place. In the end, the episode was a backstory episode and didn’t do all that much.

THE GOOD

  • If you like anime guys, you had a lot to look at this week

THE BAD

  • The backstory didn’t really bring out any emotion as we all expected his resignation during all this

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Renai Boukun (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

When the fun is taken away, the fun of the show also ends. This is a core problem I have with almost every single comedy anime, they have to have that second-last episode that gets overwhelmingly serious and completely destroys all the fun the show had in all the episodes prior. With one episode left, I will finish the show, I’m attached enough to do so, but I am so sick and tired of anime having to have its “serious drama” in a comedy show. I got to Episode 11 because I was smiling, because I was laughing, why the fuck would you go completely in the other direction now?! But because you need that bit of drama so you can consider your work a piece of art, you had to make Guri, the funniest character on the show, to be the most unfunny, uninteresting character on the show.

Fuck off.

THE GOOD

  • I suppose Demon Guri looks pretty hot

THE BAD

  • The idea of a show this funny being completely void of humour absolutely drives me crazy, this was not a fun episode to watch

Episode Score: 2/5

  1. Saraka’s dad was just a little bit pretentious. And does anyone really tell their crying daughter about how to live as they carry them home?
I’ll have to agree with you on Akashic Records. I didn’t like the first episode, but the first half actually showed quite a bit of promise and made me want the show to do okay. Then the second half has just kind of crushed any hope of it being anything more than barely watchable.
