Week #1 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #1 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’m really trying to understand how after one episode, this show is already at a 5 rating on MAL. What did this show do that made so many people upset? For starters, the art style is unbelievable, it’s so trippy and cool, like a mixture of Persona and Alice in Wonderland. I’m also quite interested in what this world truly is, it appears to be another dimension where you can only reach it in your dreams and “witches” lock themselves away in it, their real bodies being comatose. What’s also interesting is how it appears the main character Haruto might be a Tidus from Final Fantasy X level of character, a dream within a dream, as “leaving” the dream world just had him wake up…in the dream world. I’m extremely interested in this anime going forth right now and I’m absolutely perplexed as to why this show in particular has garnered such horrendously low ratings.

THE GOOD

  • Amazing art style
  • Curious concepts of dreams and the relation to the real world

THE BAD

  • A bit confusing at the start

Episode Score: 4/5

Aho Girl (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Well now, that sure was a flurry of…something! It’s like Azumanga Daioh, but shorter, more stupidity and more ecchi. I have few complaints about any of these things. I can tell I’m really going to like this show, it doesn’t overstay its welcome and because of that, there’s enough time to get the necessary jokes (and boob squeezing apparently) into the episode. A good watch it seems for comedy fans.

THE GOOD

  • Crazy over-the-top stupidity, what’s to complain about?
  • I actually think the Disciplinary Committee girl is going to be the best in terms of chemistry with Yoshiko

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

If you’re looking for cute, this anime’s gonna have you covered, at least if you can tolerate monster girls. As of this first episode, the feeling I’m getting from this show is a very casual, light-hearted comedy anime, which fits perfectly with the fantasy setting of demi-humans being the only ones around. So far, the main cast is okay, Nozomi is my standout right now, while Himeno and Kyouko have some work to do, coming off a little more one-dimensional in their characters. I was worried the show would go crazy into ecchi territory, but regardless of the first half’s subject material, it’s so far been very tame. This’ll be a fun show to watch, I think.

THE GOOD

  • Cute girls doing cute things, it always works
  • Nice light-hearted style that works very well with the setting
  • Nozomi is awesome

THE BAD

  • Other lead characters are a little boring thus far, need to be fleshed out a bit more

Episode Score: 4/5

Dive!! (Ep.1)

Not available on Crunchyroll

Gamers! (Ep.1)

Hajimete no Gal (Ep.1)

Debuts on July 12th

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

There’s certainly going to be a lot to like here, but we’re waiting until things start moving along first. We’ve got an adorable girl in Aletta, the sexy and very intriguing dragon woman and the cook himself is quite an interesting character as well. With this weird fantasy restaurant concept looking quite interesting, it’s now a matter of a story pushing through, along with more story and characters brought into the frame. But I really like what I see here after the first episode, this show will definitely be on my radar as it moves forward this season.

THE GOOD

  • Aletta is super cute
  • I really like the idea of a fantasy world restaurant, brings a lot of potential in terms of characters

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report beyond the first episode not having a ton of story

Episode Score: 4/5

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

It’s nothing special yet, but I really like this show. It’s a fun, calm show with albeit an overused premise, but delivers it in a more casual, light-hearted manner, where shows like Re:Zero and Konosuba take these concepts into a more extreme direction. Granted, we’re one episode in, so who knows where this anime will actually go, I personally hope it stays in this quiet, fun little form, but you know the overwhelming evil will have to show up at some point. As the characters go, there’s nothing special thus far, but no one’s also annoying me either. It’s an above-average show after one episode.

THE GOOD

  • The concept, while overdone, it’s done in a more calm manner and ends up feeling just a little new and fresh
  • The cell phone concept leaves a lot of room for interesting possibilities

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Wow! I thought this would’ve been an extremely pretentious time travel kind of action anime, but instead what we got is a gorgeous, hipsterish action anime with a little comedy in there as well. I love the visuals of this show, holy hell the Persona 3 vibes I’m getting are off the charts! The music is also fantastic, keeps you invested in every moment. The main cast in Kiri and Victo are a good pair, need some more fleshing out as the season goes on, but they’re already in a good spot. I seriously hop Koyuki isn’t a one-and-done, because she is absolutely stunning and I want to see her become a part of their team. Great first impression from a show I had my reservations with.

THE GOOD

  • Visuals and music were fantastic!
  • Characters off to a great start

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

So the best I can say about this episode is that, well…it’s really cool looking. That’s about it thus far, there was nothing to completely turn me off the show, but man oh man was this a cold introduction for someone like myself who knows absolutely nothing about this series. I mean, I kinda get that they’re some time travelling warriors that stop other time travelers from screwing up history, but why are they all looking like they belong in the very era they’re in? There’s no explanation to their origins in the way a show like Drifters did it. But yeah, the show seems like a fun ride, I just hope in the next episode or two I get something to hold onto.

THE GOOD

  • Holy crap this show looks gorgeous!
  • The action sequences are very well done

THE BAD

  • There’s no story yet, I don’t have a clue what’s going on
  • None of the characters interest me yet

Episode Score: 3/5

Made In Abyss (Ep.1)

Not available on Crunchyroll

Musashino! (Ep.1)

Seems to have completely disappeared off this season’s run.

Nanamaru Sanbatsu (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I get the feeling this is going to be a show that I won’t keep, it has a similar essence to it that the overly intense sports anime like Kuroko no Basket has and those shows have never worked out with me for whatever reason. I also cannot stand the main character thus far, he’s way too meek and the anime plays it up way too much. I think for fans, this is a show that some will really get into, but for me, it’s not really something I’m interested in.

THE GOOD

  • The quiz concept was a great idea, would’ve worked with me in a different way

THE BAD

  • However, the emphasis on the time in between answers and the overly intense nature of this, it’s a poor fit for me

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED***

New Game!! (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!

Hah…I missed them all so much. I’m glad to see not much has changed, though admittedly I’m a little sad to see there isn’t anyone joining their ranks at Eagle Jump just to make things a little crazier. At the same time, it’s nice to just be able to enjoy the first episode of a new season without anything major changing, it makes for a great comeback and with loads of nostalgia, it’s just a nice, peaceful watch, or at least this show is, since it’s a comedy and not some crazy action anime.

THE GOOD

  • Everything hasn’t changed and given that this show was my Best Show of its season, that’s a very good thing
  • If anything has changed however, it’s the show being just a little more expressive, especially with Hifumi

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Also, here’s a special thing I’m adding onto each episode of the anime. Let’s see if the number ever increases.

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Nora to Oujo to Noraneko Heart (Ep.1)

Debuts on July 12th

Princess Principal (Ep.1)

Not available on Crunchyroll

The Reflection Wave One (Ep.1)

Debuts on July 22nd

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I like the vibe I’m getting from the show, it comes off like an old-school 90s-era anime in terms of its style and honestly, its half-ass shitty writing, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (yet). But while I like the show’s concept and execution of it thus far, there needs to be more for me to dig my fingernails into, I want more comedy, I want more interesting characters and I want that extra reason to keep watching. For now, the show is easily safe, but a show like this will always be in danger of becoming quite stale and boring. We’ll see if this show can avoid getting that far down.

THE GOOD

  • The old-school vibes I get from the show are neat
  • Those three birds, I love ’em!

THE BAD

  • For a show this weird, there was a serious lack of comedy
  • Not a whole lot to grab onto yet

Episode Score: 3/5
