Week #1 – Fall Anime 2017

Week #1 has arrived with the Fall anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Anime-Gataris (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’ll be short and sweet with this one, the concept is interesting but the delivery in this first episode was poor. Much like how Gamers! had a really dry sense of humour, this show’s doing the same. I’m willing to give the show one more episode to bring in more than just the two girls we got so far and see if maybe that yields a better reaction, because this first episode just wasn’t very good. But unlike other shows I’ll drop this first week, Anime-Gataris at least has something there that makes me want to give it one more try, thinking it’ll be better.

THE GOOD

  • Weird extra concept with the talking cat and such in what appeared like a normal high school anime

THE BAD

  • Really poor comedy this first episode
  • Nothing really drawing me in

Episode Score: 2/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Black Clover (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’ve never gotten into shounen anime, it’s always been a challenge for me. I don’t really know why specifically, maybe it’s just the nature of its storytelling, maybe it’s the style of characters it has, who knows. With Black Clover however, I know exactly why I don’t like this show: Asta. His voice is horrendous, his attitude is overwhelming and annoying as all hell. The story behind him is terrible as well, the whole “he wants to be the greatest magician, but can’t use magic”, I cannot stand it and when that level of underdog story is in a shounen-style anime, I’m beyond out, because I know the bore and struggle it’ll be. So yeah, while I imagine this show will be good for those who love shounen anime, this is beyond a drop for me, it’s terrible.

THE GOOD

  • Not a thing honestly

THE BAD

  • Asta
  • Asta’s voice
  • Asta’s story
  • Anything related to Asta, which is the entire anime

Episode Score: 1/5 ***DROPPED***

Blend-S (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I am going to love this show if it keeps this up all season. Blend-S is like Working/Wagnaria but with even further extreme trope-laden characters. The idea of the waitresses all being super extreme characteristics like tsundere, imouto and sadistic as we’ve seen so far, it’s such a perfect idea for a comedy, you have a reason for these girls to act as extreme as they do. So far, every character is interested and fun to watch, Maika’s gonna be a real heartthrob all season for sure and Mafuyu is definitely going to supply a lot of the fantastic comedy the show’s already giving me. Absolutely loved this episode, really thinking this one’s a Top 5 contender with ease.

THE GOOD

  • Wonderful premise of the cafe
  • Great characters with great comedy

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

This one’s rather interesting. It’s clearly designed for a female audience, one girl and a bunch of pretty boys, but the mystery behind what Cardia is and what her father is doing adds a bit of mystique to the show. Not to mention the characters so far are all pretty good, Impey being my favourite so far, he’s just such a lovable goofball! I have it in my head that it might get too lovey-dovey later on, but who knows, I’ve had shows surprise me a lot this year, who’s to say this one won’t do the same?

THE GOOD

  • Interesting premise with Cardia’s “power”
  • Great characters

THE BAD

  • The overwhelming romantic attempts of the guys towards Cardia

Episode Score: 4/5

Dies irae (Ep.0)

THOUGHTS

I worry about this show only because I know it’s in the horror genre. I have been waiting for ages for this anime to be done, but depending on the level of violence, which so far runs on the Hellsing scale where it’s gory but not horrific to me, it might cause me to drop the show if I cannot handle it. However this episode so far tells me that I am going to adore this show and in fact, I might be cheering for the Nazis on this one. The sadistic, over-the-top nature of these characters is so attractive to me, in the same way that Alucard’s sadistic smile in Hellsing grabbed me. All the “villains” are badass and interesting to watch, so we’ll see what happens when the “good guys” show up in Episode 1.

THE GOOD

  • Great characters with their own unique sadistic, insane look and personality
  • Art and music really supports this show’s personality

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

WOW THAT WAS FUCKING COOL AS SHIT!!! The Cowboy Bebop vibes are strong with this one too, so my attention is at 100%. The art style and animation is badass, the music is really cool, the characters we’ve seen so far are unique and fantastically fleshed out, there’s so much to love here. I expected this to be ‘meh’ at best and holy shit did it ever exceed my expectations! Give this roller coaster of an anime a try if you’re into badass motorcycle riding, monster fighting action!

THE GOOD

  • Badass art style and music
  • Characters are well-designed and fleshed out
  • Very interesting premise

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Imouto sae Ireba Ii. (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

This is going to be the anime that really tests people’s resolve. The extreme vulgarity of this show, man…it’s like Oreimo and Eromanga-sensei taken to the extreme, except no little sister actually exists (maybe). Speaking of which, how does the anime expect me to believe Chihiro is actually male? I’m totally looking at this believing Chihiro is a girl and is hiding this truth from Itsuki because (s)he knows that he’ll charge instantly. After all, Chihiro, while it is used as a boy’s name, it’s predominantly used for girls. But yeah, this show is rough, lot of perverted imagery, Nayuta speaks dirtier than most hentai characters and yet the show is still super entertaining to me. But then again, I actually like dirty comedies and don’t get offended by the slightest hint of sideboob…

THE GOOD

  • Really bad dirty and vulgar comedy, I love it!
  • Nayuta is really pushing boundaries as a female character

THE BAD

  • The male lead literally has someone wanting to fuck him right there on the spot and he’s saying no! Especially when she’s so perverted, she might actually roleplay as a little sister for him

Episode Score: 4/5

Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

…FUCK!!! That show got dark really REALLY fast. I suppose it’s a really interesting a concept, a country where murder isn’t against the law, yet the citizens of that country are the ones who police it, killing anyone who kills or tries to kill, their way of making the country as peaceful as possible. Jesus Christ, man, I thought this show was going to be a nice, calm watch (and it probably still will be), but man oh man did this episode catch me off guard. I’m way into this show though and if I can get such an emotional high on the first episode, there’s definitely going to be more ahead.

THE GOOD

  • Shocking conclusion to the episode
  • A constant feeling of uneasiness, but not a scary feeling
  • Interesting lead character

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Konohana Kitan (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Wow, I thought this would be a ‘meh’ show and it evolved into what might be my favourite show after week one. It had everything I wanted, lots of cute girls, some pretty, some super hot. There was a good bit of comedy in there, mostly stemming from Yuzu’s dunce cap facial expressions, but there was also some really nice, soothing moments where I could just chill and watch this without requiring my brain to be on the entire time. Oh and yes, there was a lot of bathing. So yeah, cute girls doing cute things and it takes place at a hot spring hotel? I’m in!

THE GOOD

  • Yuzu has a chance at Best Girl
  • Satsuki is already running away as Sexiest Girl

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Net-juu no Susume (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

So far, so good. I was worried initially that this one would run a little on the dry side, but Moriko is putting the work in to make this one interesting. This one is coming off to me like an adult-age version of Netoge, which was a really enjoyable anime about MMORPGs and dealing with real life. In this case, it’s a lot more grounded in reality and seems less over-the-top, though it’s only been one episode, who knows where it’ll go from here. But I’m very curious to see how this love story will eventually unfold.

THE GOOD

  • Moriko is the selling point of the show and she’s damn good
  • Interested adult-themed storyline mixing MMO lifestyle

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’m going to try something different this time around. Since I don’t need to explain the story much, I’m actually going to start keeping 3-minute shorts every week and this one is a big reason as to why. I freaking loved this episode, Chisato is a wonderful character that admittedly reminds me way too much of how my girlfriend is. Drunken Chisato is my girlfriend when she’s sober, so I can semi-relate to this! But yeah, this short was very cute and funny and something I’m definitely going to keep an eye on the rest of the season.

THE GOOD

  • Chisato is super cute, looks-wise sober, personality-wise drunk

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Sengoku Night Blood (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I stopped this show at the 7-minute mark. This one is beyond my range, it’s clearly a show designed for straight women with the over-the-top pretty boys and a clear direction of one female lead being lead around by the parade of boys she encounters. I’ve tried shows like these before, they’re all just awful. The seven minutes I watched wasn’t horrendous per se, but I had zero connection to it and was just not really focused on it, so I stopped it when I did. It’s probably a good show for the viewers it’s targeting, but for me? Yeah, no.

THE GOOD

  • It looks gorgeous, definitely a feast for the female eyes

THE BAD

  • I can’t say anything specifically, it’s not Black Clover levels of bad, but there’s just nothing in this show for me, it’s 100% for girls and straight girls alone, I don’t even think as a bisexual man I can get into this one

Episode Score: 1.5/5 ***DROPPED***

Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’m happy to see the show back and not in a tournament setting. I am however a little unsure how I feel about Soma literally getting into a fight with one of the Elite Ten right off the start, I probably would’ve began with a refresher episode and gotten everyone familiar once again. After all, I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT HOJO!!! But the episode itself was exactly what I remember loving about the show, the sexualized cooking, the over-the-top nature of all the characters and Soma being the biggest goofball I’ve ever seen. So yeah, another season, another chance at Best Show. We’ll see what happens!

THE GOOD

  • Sexy cooking is back!!!

THE BAD

  • Kuga’s hair
  • I know they’ll find a way for Soma to win this and I probably won’t like how it’s done

Episode Score: 4/5

Two Car (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’m not sure what to think of this one. I don’t think it’s going to go the “cute girls doing cute things” route, nor do I think it’s going to be overly ecchi either, even with an all-female cast. Yes, I mean that because the one male character thus far, we never see his face. It’s hard to say whether this show will be an intense racing anime, or if it evolves into this ridiculous yuri comedy that happens to have an absurd sidecar racing league in it. Either way, I’m curious enough to see where it goes.

THE GOOD

  • Very strange premise that yields quite a bit of interest
  • Various unique character pairings that have some really good ones

THE BAD

  • Completely unsure of the direction it’s wanting to take
  • Nothing grabbed me too hard during this first impression

Episode Score: 3/5

Urahara (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

…WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH?!!! And why am I curious enough to give it one more episode? Seriously though, this show is all kinds of weird and fucked. And yet I can’t look away, it’s cute and weird! I wish I could explain more, but I’ll let the pictures I took do all the talking.

THE GOOD

  • Weird and trippy as fuck, seems someone’s trying to compete with Flip Flappers

THE BAD

  • I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK I’M WATCHING!!!

Episode Score: 2.5/5
