Week # 3 – Fall Anime 2017

Week #3 has arrived with the Fall anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Anime-Gataris (Ep.3) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

I’m glad that the irony of the show talking about shows being dropped at Episode 3 didn’t apply here, as the show will be staying for the foreseeable future. I’m glad too, because I really like the delivery of it now that the main characters are fully interacting with each other. Watching the over-the-top levels of anime fandom conversations they’re having, it’s infectious, you almost want to join them. Kaikai being the one to set everyone straight was fantastic as well, loved the resolution there, though it’s clear we haven’t seen the last of the cliche “bitches” of the Student Council.

THE GOOD

  • Kaikai is fucking awesome
  • I love the natural delivery of the conversations, it’s pure unadulterated fandom

THE BAD

  • If the main conflict is a Student Council who just doesn’t like anime, it’s going to be an ongoing problem for me during this show

Episode Score: 4/5

Blend-S (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Well we got to see the 4th member of the waitress staff, shame we don’t get to see her in action yet. Hell, she’s not even hired as of the end of this week’s episode! But either way, holy hell we’ve got someone that’s going to work off of Maika so well, just look at how a single doujinshi she’s into has completely broken Maika! This can only make things funnier and funnier, which by the way is already at a 5-star level of comedy, this episode being the third straight week of just that. Everything was still solid, the “date” with Dino and Maika went way too well, Mafuyu was on her game still and now with new blood coming into the picture, it’s only going to get better.

THE GOOD

  • The “date” was super adorable and funny
  • New character coming in and she’ll be working so well with Maika

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

I am shocked how good this show has been so far, considering it’s a shoujo anime. This episode itself is easily the shining star as we get all the main characters really starting to interact with each other, Cardia’s now being training so she’s not the damsel character all season long and hell, we’ve got a pretty kid boy in “Baby Dracula”, aka Delacroix II, which by the way, unless that’s a canon name for Dracula (Delacroix), that’s really fucking clever! But yeah, this episode was fan-fucking-tastic, filled with comedy and one hell of a backstory for both Hellsing and Dracula, both having a common goal, though Dracula is not as aware of it, since it appears Hellsing hasn’t told him why he had to kill Baby Drac’s family and even then it didn’t save Hellsing’s family. They’ve made a villain you want to see die, that’s for sure.

THE GOOD

  • Hellsing and Dracula will be great additions to the main cast, now that Baby Drac’s arrived and Hellsing isn’t just a badass mute.
  • Cardia is being trained so she won’t keep a constant damsel in distress role

THE BAD

  • Can they at least cut the bottom half of Cardia’s dress off now? She’s gonna trip trying to fight in that thing!

Episode Score: 5/5

Dies irae (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

This show is becoming like Hellsing but at high school. This is going to be so much fun. Upskirts of Nazi schoolgirls with awesome bloody battle sequences? What isn’t there to love?! In all seriousness though, the show has gone in an even better direction now, the Nazis have shown up, they’re being all friendly with Ren, especially Rusalka (pink hair) who is quickly becoming one of my favourite girls this season, and now at least she and Kei are joining him at school. It makes me wonder how long this will last though, as I assume they’ll be trying to kill each other very soon.

THE GOOD

  • Loving all the Nazi characters, especially Rusalka
  • Story beginning to push through

THE BAD

  • “WHAT’S GOING ON?!” cliche with the main character, it’s old

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Yet again, another awesome and badass episode! A new sext femme fatale, a cool mafia plot and a sentient computer for the end boss?! Sign me the fuck up for that awesome shit! I wasn’t bored at all during this episode, every single moment had something cool going on, whether it was badass action, enthralling story, interesting characters, or Gina’s butt and boobs. Okay okay okay, mostly Gina’s butt and boobs. But yeah, this show is turning out to be a surprising shining star for me after 3 weeks.

THE GOOD

  • The badassery continues AND there’s some real sex appeal this week too!

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Imouto sae Ireba Ii. (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

I freaking love this show. It gives zero fucks about taboos and just has fun with it. It’s absolutely ridiculous in everything it does, whether it’s the main characters somehow having the money to just take plane trips around Japan for writing inspiration, or Nayu and Miyako apparently finding ways to get naked every episode now. The show just doesn’t care and I love it for that.  I will say it again, if you can handle insanity (and admittedly A LOT of uncomfortable topics and A LOT of ecchi) in anime, this has been more than that for me after three episodes.

THE GOOD

  • I love the ridiculousness of this show in every sense of it
  • I’m hoping the show finds ridiculous ways that Nayu just parades around naked and suckers Miyako into joining her every week. It’s not because it’s more nudity/ecchi, I just love how silly it’s been these two straight episodes already

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

What a strange episode. It was very calm, yet extremely frustrating to watch. Let’s just talk about this ‘bothersome country’, shall we? Basically because they have to move forward in order to see new sights, they’re okay with destroying property with that giant tank of a country?! I wish Kino had called them out on that, because let’s be honest, I don’t care how nice those people were, holy fucking shit they’re extremely selfish. We saw an innocent family’s home get destroyed! The episode itself was fine, nothing special, but man oh man was that entire concept frustrating me.

THE GOOD

  • Some really cool imagery with the country and the mural

THE BAD

  • An extremely annoying premise that never really got called out for

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Konohana Kitan (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Huh, I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy this episode, given that it mostly centered around Ren, who’s a type of character I’m usually annoyed by. But in this show where everything is turned up to 11 on the cuteness scale, it manages to get past the initial annoyance of Ren’s personality with this quasi-yuri story it’s trying to have. Slightly annoyed the show just can’t have two girls say they love each other when it obvious as hell that they are. Either way, it was a cute episode with some interesting stuff and a bullshit premise that Aoi is a boy. I saw that sumo outfit, there’s no “boy” there!

Side note, the sexual assault moment was a bit unnecessary. Actually not a bit, it was completely unnecessary.

THE GOOD

  • I actually enjoyed Ren for an episode
  • Nice yuri relationship story

THE BAD

  • Very uncomfortable and unnecessary sexual assault moment in the early minutes

Episode Score: 4/5

Net-juu no Susume (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Once again, this super adorable MMORPG romantic story of an anime continues to keep a steady pace and being a very entertaining show thus far. Moriko and Yuta continue to be super adorable and having zero clue they’re so close to banging if they just shared a room together for more than five minutes. The only thing that’s weirding me out is how overly involved the friends are, whether it’s the other members of the guild or Yuta’s co-worker, who just a little too off his rocker at times. But yeah, this show’s been a consistent good so far.

THE GOOD

  • It’s going to be a broken record, but Moriko is so freaking adorable!
  • Continual progress in their relationship

THE BAD

  • The friends of the characters both in-game and in the real world are maybe getting a little too involved in all this

Episode Score: 4/5

Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

This was a nothing episode to say the least. The problem with it being a two-minute short is that if it doesn’t strike right off the bat, it won’t have time to catch up. This episode suffers because the first 30 seconds tailed on with Chisato rolling her ankle. By that point, there isn’t enough time to fit in the cute, drunken Chisato we love from the first two episodes, even if this week she got drunk from a non-alcoholic beverage.

THE GOOD

  • Chisato is still awesome

THE BAD

  • Waste of time with the injury angle
  • Didn’t get as much time with the fun stuff

Episode Score: 3/5

Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Not as flashy an episode this week, the bulk of it was definitely spent on furthering Soma’s character and his journey to learn even more about cooking. Obviously at this point he won’t beat Kuga, but maybe the goal now is for him to win on one day. My idea is that on the final day, people stop going to Kuga’s place because they’ve eaten the same thing over and over, while Soma keeps adjusting on the fly to what teh customers want. This’ll be interesting, that’s for sure.

THE GOOD

  • Good character development
  • Alice is just killing it

THE BAD

  • Nothing special happened

Episode Score: 3.5/5
