Week #5 – Fall Anime 2017

Week #5 has arrived with the Fall anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Blend-S (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Another really good episode and a lot to love as well. Maika’s hair is now a character in itself, capable of whipping naughty boys like the dominatrix she truly is. We’ve got a potential shipping with Kaho and Kouyou after being locked in the staff room for what was probably a couple hours at best. And lastly, we got a view of Maika’s siblings, who are crazier than she is, which seems almost impossible. A lot to dig into this week and all of it was very enjoyable.

THE GOOD

  • Maika’s hair whip, that is all
  • Potential relationship beyond the already established Maika/Dino pairing
  • Maika’s family really gives understanding to why she’s the way she is

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Straight-forward episode, didn’t come across anything too special. The episode was centered around Dr. Frankenstein’s backstory, how he created a poison that was used to massacre the vampires during the war and also ended up being the basis for the very Horologium poison that resides within Cardia’s body. There wasn’t much to speak of here, some backstory, a nice little scene between Fran and Cardia. If anything, the episode just showed how weak Queen Victoria is as a villain, her voice actress is doing a terrible job of making her seem threatening at all.

THE GOOD

  • Good backstory for Frankenstein, gives him reason for what he does, how he feels

THE BAD

  • Nothing special during the episode
  • Victoria is slowly becoming weaker and weaker as a villain

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Dies irae (Ep.4) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

I am dropping this show, for the simple reason of how dumb a single concept was uttered. The Nazis are now training Ren to be stronger…so they can fight and defeat him. The second that logic is used, I’m out. I don’t care how good the characters seem, how awesome the animation and music is, a concept that stupid cannot be praised.

Note: I did watch the entire episode and it’s still a cool show. I might even finish it on my own time. But because the concept is admittedly one of the more ridiculously stupid things I’ve seen in an anime ever, I’ve gotta show that here, thus the drop.

Episode Score: N/A ***DROPPED***

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

We finally had a weaker episode, so the show is indeed human. The Horror this episode really didn’t have anything to make me hate her or sympathize with her, she just…existed. Sure, killing kids and such should automatically make her bad, along with the attempted rape of Sword (which how did he let himself get into that situation?!), but there wasn’t anything about her that forced me into making a decision whether I was happy she died, or sad that everything happened. The episode was helped a little bit by Sophie and Gina ruling the episode, but yeah, easily the weakest episode with a not-so-great villain.

THE GOOD

  • Gina’s back AND with Sophie

THE BAD

  • Weak villain

Episode Score: 4/5

Imouto sae Ireba Ii. (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

A relatively boring episode after the hot spring debacle was over. It’s clear that beyond the fact that Setsuna may just have won the award that Victor from Chronos Ruler single-handedly won last season (PSST!!! It’s the sexy boy award!!!), this episode was spent getting Itsuki’s writing career back on track and hell he’s finally gotten his series adapted into more than just a light novel, now turning into a manga. So that’s cool and all but…Chihiro and Nayu were basically nowhere to be found this week, so that sucks.

THE GOOD

  • Great hot spring moment
  • Setsuna’s hot, guys…
  • Itsuki’s career finally advancing

THE BAD

  • Not a whole lot excitement after the 10-minute mark
  • Bunch of the main cast non-existent

Episode Score: 4/5

Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

I was about to tell you this sweet story and then the final 15 seconds kind of left me with a sour taste in my mouth. But here’s the basics of the story:

  1. Guy meets farmer’s daughter
  2. Guy falls in love with farmer’s daughter
  3. Farmer’s daughter turns out to be a princess
  4. Guy is part of a revolution to kill the royal family and overthrow them
  5. Guy kills royal family with a grenade
  6. Guy realizes he killed his lover and goes crazy, eventually believes his lover left and will return one day
  7. His new housekeeper turns out to be the princess he fell in love with, who was never around when he in reality killed the royal family’s doubles
  8. Girl is content with living this lie, having him believe his lover is still out there somewhere
  9. And then at the very end, guy reveals he’s known the entire time that housekeeper is his lover and is pretending not to know…for some reason

That’s the part I don’t get, why are they not just living normally? Sure, he tried to kill her, but surely she understood this when she met him and knew he was part of the revolution. So I imagine there’s no hard feelings from her end, so what harm would it have been for the two to just reveal the truth to each other? It was a nice episode and then got a little…odd.

THE GOOD

  • Very sweet story with the housekeeper

THE BAD

  • Odd choice of ending that episode

Episode Score: 4/5

Konohana Kitan (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

This episode very much reminded me of the silliness that Flying Witch had that made it such an enjoyable, yet calming slice of life anime. There was just enough randomness in this episode to make it memorable, while the majority of the episode was very soothing, just easy to watch and get lost in it for the 20 minutes it runs for. Really found myself mesmerized with the weaving, much like Yuzu was and I thought it was really neat that it turned out that these rain weaving sisters are the ones who create rainbows, signalling the end of a period of rainfall. Really cool episode.

THE GOOD

  • Very calm and soothing episode
  • Just enough silliness with the introduction of Okiku (and Sakura’s death stare with scissors in hand)

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Net-juu no Susume (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

An entire episode of revealing what we already knew. This still had the core things I like about the show, but this episode just felt like it was missing something and I think that something is what Episode 6 will bring. There just was too much time spent waiting for this moment to happen, so the payoff didn’t come yet, which next week should certainly bring.

THE GOOD

  • Moriko’s reactions to being found out were priceless

THE BAD

  • Lot of time wasted to get to the end of the episode

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

A nice easy episode to enjoy. Chisato working her ass off, can’t get drunk so instead we get a more relationship-based episode, where it’s just Sora helping her out in a pinch and Chisato being grateful for it. Nothing special here, just super normal and adorable to watch.

THE GOOD

  • Very real, believable relationship between the two

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

All right, anyone who’s read the manga and knows what happens, please enlighten me whether this new arc with Erina’s father being the new head of Totsuki is actually any good. Because in my eyes, this is pure bullshit. We don’t need another villain, we don’t need any more adversaries, we have an entire group of ten people for Soma to go through, why do we need another giant fucking asshole on the show? I was really interested in this man when it pertains to him being the one person who makes Erina tremble. But that’s all I want from him, I have trouble understanding how him being the head turns this show into anything other than a “WE’LL TRIUMPH THROUGH FRIENDSHIP!!!” bullshit storyline in the end. So yeah, I’m slightly pissed off.

Also, fuck Rindo. She went from cool to cunt in seconds.

THE GOOD

  • Good start, interesting reaction from Erina with her father

THE BAD

  • I hate this man as the lead villain, it’s unnecessary given the Elite Ten already exist AND Soma’s yet to surpass his own classmates

Episode Score: 3/5
