Week #10 – Fall Anime 2017

Week #10 has arrived with the Fall anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Blend-S (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

I was really happy with this episode. We got a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG needed episode specifically on Mafuyu and from multiple angles. Her thoughts on romance, given she’s a college girl, her desire to teach and her ability to do just that and be an fantastic older sister, both literally and metaphorically. Mix that in with the show’s usual comedy and we got a pretty good episode this week. Hell, we even got a nice little bit of ecchi at the end.

…Maika is seriously making a sneaky case at sexiest girl. Seriously…

THE GOOD

  • Long overdue Mafuyu episode
  • Perfect mix of comedy and seriousness

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

It was getting better and then returned to it’s average state. The first half was strong, Drac finally got some fighting in, Saint looked like a fucking badass and then…oh shit! Saint kills Finis in one fell swoop? Oh wait…there’s multiple clones of him…and the end boss is a fucking machine. Ugh…lame!!!

I’m forcing myself to finish this show though…

THE GOOD

  • Awesome first half with Drac and Saint given some much needed fight time
  • Momentary shock moment with Saint killing “a” Finis

THE BAD

  • Terrible turn of events with the end boss being Isaac in machine form, Cardia being captured and the good guys in disarray. Cliche. As. Fuck!

Episode Score: 3/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

What a dark story. To realize that while we knew Dark Knight was Luke’s father, Luke was essentially the cause of his mother’s murder. He distracted her, causing Dark Knight to lunge in for the kill. Along with that, the realities of such a large-scale destruction really got shown in this episode. A child dying, or so we thought, but in the end, the man who saved her still dies later. We truly understand the realities of life, no matter how good you are as a person, you cannot escape your fate. Death comes when it comes, innocent or guilty. A truly real episode.

THE GOOD

  • Emotional and real, something anime rarely gets right
  • Adelaide comes off as a fantastic character

THE BAD

  • It’s just a shame she never gets any true screen time, used as the conflict between Luke and Dark Knight, his father

Episode Score: 5/5

Imouto sae Ireba Ii. (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

Of course they’re not related by blood. So the plot thickens, now the accountant knows Chihiro’s gender too, which makes me wonder how many more of the main cast do and just don’t make note of it? Either way, we got a lot in this episode, specifically what will likely be the final couple episodes, as Chihiro tries to get Itsuki to make amends with the family, specifically his father.

However, it’s hard to tell. We have to keep one major factor in mind…we have multiple girls who have fallen for Itsuki and it’s completely unresolved. We’ve got Nayuta, who’s basically been trying to ride him all day, every day, there’s Miyako who’s your classic best friend in love with the main character and then it’s becoming more and more apparent that maybe, just maybe Chihiro looks at Itsuki just a bit differently. But who knows, we’ll find out soon enough.

THE GOOD

  • Some good serious family stuff thrown in with the usual comedy

THE BAD

  • Lack of over-the-top stuff this, Nayu taking pictures of animal dicks doesn’t count

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

…I have never felt the way I do right now as I currently write this episode. I am legitimately shaking, I was going to continue watching more shows for this week and the episode has put me in such a state of mind that I can’t get myself to continue at this current moment. It’s 10am, I’ll probably watch more later in the afternoon or evening, but right now I’m incapable of watching anything else right now and will probably be sitting here for a little while before I can get myself back to normal.

For spoilers, the entire episode was me sitting there waiting for the swerve that the country was truly this horrific, dark country with a terrible secret they were hiding from all those who lived on the outside. As each minute passed, I got more and more ready for the incoming swerve. Then Kino left the country…and I didn’t notice there were 3 minutes left in the show. The volcano erupted and that’s when everything hit me. The characters we grew to love in that episode, namely Sakura…dead in an instant. Gone. Ceasing to exist. Then we learn the truth:

  1. The country was bad, hating outsiders, treating them like shit
  2. A month prior to Kino’s arrival, they knew the volcano would erupt, killing them all if they stayed
  3. They could’ve left, but chose to stay and accept their fate, perhaps feeling it was karma, but their reasoning was that they didn’t know how to live anywhere else
  4. None of the children knew about this
  5. Sakura’s parents in a last ditch effort tried to get Sakura out of there and to go with Kino, but she refused, her dream to inherit the inn too strong
  6. Sakura also knew of their fate

My heart is still sinking, I never really handle the death of “good” characters, but this hits harder because it’s a child and one of the nicest ones we’ll see all season. She was intentionally written to become a character you fell in love with, only for the show to shock you and have you watch her die with zero chance of anything stopping the imminent death. God fucking damn it…

THE GOOD

  • Perfect writing, keeping you on your toes until the very end when you drop your guard and the swerve comes
  • Quite possibly the best episode I’ll watch all season, evoking emotions I have never felt to this extent before

THE BAD

  • There isn’t a thing I can stay about this episode that is bad

Episode Score: 6/5

Konohana Kitan (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

I enjoyed the first half of the episode, but man oh man there was way too much fucking crying in this episode. It really shows that Yuzu is way too easy to bring to tears and actually gives you a legitimate reason to think she’s annoying, like every character does when they first meet her. Sure, she’s adorable, but sweet Jesus she can get under my skin with her proneness to crying over nothing. Otherwise, I still liked the episode, being a Satsuki-central episode after all. But man I could’ve done without 25% of it being crying.

THE GOOD

  • Satsuki-central episode, the best thing I could ask for

THE BAD

  • The massive amount of crying really offset the episode, had trouble staying focused
  • I’m starting to get really annoyed with the characters getting overly upset over the tiniest of things

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Net-juu no Susume (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

It’s not quite the ending I was hoping for, but given the characters and their personalities, it’s probably the best we were going to get. I wanted more than hand-holding, I wanted more than just the admission of wanting to be more than just partners. I wanted love confessions and a kiss, but anime doesn’t like doing that so we didn’t get it. The journey was arduous, full of frustration and the potential of the show actually not having the ending we all wanted to see, but in the end we got what we wanted, even if it wasn’t 100% what we were all hoping to see.

I truly hope this show doesn’t end this way. I think there’s great potential in another season where the two start living their life as partners both in Fruits de Mer and in real life. Not only that but we have potential in seeing the rest of the main party in real life as well, I think there’s real drama in everyone discovering their real life personalities compared to their in-game ones. Either way, I really hope this isn’t the end of the series. I know there’s an OVA coming and I hope Crunchyroll has it, but I would love a second season of this.

THE GOOD

  • The resolution we all wanted

THE BAD

  • But at 90% in terms of actions and visuals, the kiss was missing

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

Honestly, nothing special at all. T’was April Fools during this episode, there were terrible pranks to be had and this episode was essentially the equivalence to a lame couple joking around with each other. It was kinda cringe-inducing.

THE GOOD

  • Same as usual, I enjoy drunken Chisato

THE BAD

  • Lame altogether with the April Fools stuff

Episode Score: 2.5/5
