Week # 11 – Fall Anime 2017

Week #11 has arrived with the Fall anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Blend-S (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Another solid episode, as per usual. The second half was okay at best, I’ve kind of run out of things to enjoy with the various Dino/Maika dates, but Owner antics helped along the way. It’s the second half where things really shine. Kaho/Kouyou continue their relationship blossoming, while Hideri keeps putting his name in for best male character as he makes every moment that much more memorable. A lot of good, really missed not having Mafuyu and Miu in this episode at all though.

THE GOOD

  • Strong second half, great moments from the entire cast
  • Hideri continues to push this show forward, even on a weaker day

THE BAD

  • Missed Mafuyu/Miu

Episode Score: 4/5

Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Well! At least we’ve only got one episode left. I’ve gotta say, I’m real disappointed with this second half. Everything I liked about the show has slowly been taken away piece by piece in order to tell a really bad ‘good triumphs over evil’ story, with a villain that has zero influence over its viewers and a romance story that is so terribly campy that it’s no wonder it’s a shoujo anime. I will finish the final episode, but this really brings up a major reason as to why I stay away from both shounen and shoujo anime, they are tailored for a very specific audience and anyone outside of it will always have trouble staying with it. The entire episode this week? Just boring, really boring.

THE GOOD

  • Can’t say much good about it

THE BAD

  • Boring all the way through
  • Villain(s) continue to garner zero interest
  • Romance story has gotten teenage girl levels of campy

Episode Score: 2/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Nothing too special here, but I will admit it’s nice seeing characters consistently showing up now. Gina appears to be a mainstay for a little while now, I imagine we’ll see Luke join the party next week. This show appears to not be over this season and will carry on into the winter, so there’s no end in sight really. This episode was really just a filler in between the city and El Dorado, so realistically we got nothing more than Sophie learning to take better care of herself. Otherwise, there wasn’t much to speak of here.

THE GOOD

  • Gina’s back!
  • Sophie getting a little more independent

THE BAD

  • Not much going on during the episode

Episode Score: 3/5

Imouto sae Ireba Ii. (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

I’m always impressed by this anime at times. This is what the anime managed to accomplish, while still being EXTREMELY overly sexual and EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEMELY inappropriate:

  1. They had Miyako showing promise as a potential editor, something she’s shooting for in her future
  2. They play an entire game of Once Upon A Time
  3. The show manages to simultaneously tell two guys’ quests for romance, with Itsuki finally admitting his interest in Nayuta and Haruto still trying to get a shot at Miyako, since he knows she’d be free if Itsuki and Nayuta were a known item
  4. Itsuki establishes his reasons/goals as a writer and for when he’ll finally confess to Nayuta and the first “checkpoint” per se comes into play, as his light novel is being turned into an anime

All this gets accomplished and it’s well-written and acted out in the span of a single 20-minute episode that features girls writing manuscripts in the nude and a game that features the story of an incestual relationship where the male has a one-metre penis, can turn it into a sword and whip and starts fighting giant humans like it’s Attack on Titan, but with dicks.

…I fucking adore this show.

THE GOOD

  • The ability to make so much happen with so much insanity behind it
  • Relationships and characters that continue to feel realistic, despite the over-sexualization the anime features
  • Attack on Titan with dicks…HAHAHAHAHA!!!

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Once again, another episode that on the surface seemed so harmless and then just drops it all on you at once. I thought we were going to get a cool episode showing Kino’s origins. I mean, we got that, but not quite in the manner I thought we would. I suppose I should’ve figured it out from the colour tones in the episode, but I also assumed the colours were more representing the fact that this was her memories. Then when you see the original Kino, the traveler who “saves” her, he gets stabbed and the red of his blood shines in this land of almost colour-less nature. This was another dark as hell episode and one that takes a shot again at religion when it reaches cult status and goes into directions that are far too dangerous for normal life.

THE GOOD

  • Perfect use of colours and tone to set a mood that ended up tricking me
  • A dark origin story for Kino

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Konohana Kitan (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

A nice little episode, nothing too special going on here, mind you. The Okiku makeup thing was pretty funny, Sakura being a whimsical idiot was funny and the Okiku sidestory in this episode was a bit touching. But all in all, there wasn’t anything that really sent the episode over the edge, there was nothing necessarily wrong with it, there just wasn’t anything that they did really well this week.

THE GOOD

  • A few moments that were pretty entertaining

THE BAD

  • There just wasn’t anything truly defining or special about this episode

Episode Score: 3/5

Net-juu no Susume (Ep.11 [OVA])

THOUGHTS

I’m really glad Crunchyroll also got the OVA for this show, however I still have some complaints about it. First though, the episode itself was still good, I got more of what I wanted, more relationship forming between the two, really good humour, everything I loved about the show in the ten episodes before. However, I think the second half was wasted on the dream world gag. Look, it was funny and all, but I didn’t think it was necessary. There was already a good thing going on with the two hanging out at Moriko’s place and playing together. I was sure they’d do a story where they lost track of time and it was so late that they’d find an excuse to spend the night under the same roof together. But instead we got a comedy gag that wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t what I was looking for here.

THE GOOD

  • Relationship continues to grow
  • Some really good comedy in there

THE BAD

  • Second half wasted on a comedy gag when it could’ve been used to finalize Yuuta and Moriko’s relationship

Episode Score: 4/5

Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Nice little episode, seems we’re getting the last 3 episodes dedicated to how they met as this first one brings them together at the bar Sora works at. Nothing special here, just a cute love story being shown to us.

THE GOOD

  • Same ol’ stuff that makes me smile

THE BAD

  • Nothing special during this episode

Episode Score: 3/5

  1. I’m with you in that Code Realize has just been really, really dull.

      1. It definitely had potential in the beginning but since then has just been happy to go through the motions. It works as a narrative but otherwise it just isn’t that interesting.
