Week # 12 – Fall Anime 2017

Week #12 has arrived with the Fall anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Blend-S (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

This is how you end a show. Everyone was together in a silly escapade, everyone got their time in, got their jokes and gimmicks in and hell, everyone got some naked time…well…EXCEPT FOR HIDERI?!!! HOW’S THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?!!! Either way, everything I could’ve asked for was in this episode. Dino actually confessed (though Maika only heard it in her dreams as she was asleep) and Maika technically confessed but naturally in her sadistic manner. Miu and Mafuyu finally got some real time in this episode, including us finally getting some Mafuyu butt during the hot springs section of the episode! We got origin stories of the cafe, including the ridiculous way in how Mafuyu got hired, literally so much got put into a 20-minute episode and I didn’t feel overwhelmed, instead I’m extremely satisfied with how it ended.

It makes me sad to think that this show probably wouldn’t get a second season, but then again the response to this show has been VERY positive, so who knows. As for me? I would 1000% watch a second season, hell I would watch 10 more seasons of this show if it was the same great content we got in 12 episodes.

I’ll spoil the season-end right now, this show is absolutely the Show of the Season for me. One single episode fell below a 4/5 score, the lowest being the one 3.5/5. The show is the one I waited for the most every week, never took its foot off the gas and never really pissed me off in any ways. The worst thing I could say about it is that it had a single episode that just wasn’t anything special. That’s it.

This may be my favourite show all year, it’s the 15th piece of anime I’ve given a 10/10 rating, the 13th TV series to get that rating. And as I look at these 15 pieces of anime, I can safely say this is a top 5 of all-time for me, next to Infinite Stratos, ERASED, Hellsing Ultimate, and Spirited Away. That’s some real nice company there!

THE GOOD

  • Strong finish
  • Everyone got time to get their shit in
  • Confessions, origin stories, a lot of content for a finale

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about, a solid season if there ever was one

Episode Score: 5/5

Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

I gave this episode a chance. It would either end a 7/10 or a 6/10 depending on the life of Finis. And naturally, the anime has to kill all family members, as it loves to do. So a 6 it is.

I am absolutely stifled by this show. How does a show that did so well in its first half, turn out to be so boring, cliche and downright campy? Its romance was unbelievably forced and cheesed up, like this show was designed for 6 year-old girls. Its villains were one-dimensional and their motivations were never truly explained. I mean fuck, the best reason we get for Isaac is because a village resented him a little too hard for failing. Then they kill him with ease, Finis dies for no reason, other than Cardia being more in pain. And then lastly after everything that happened, the war, the death, the fallout…there really isn’t any fallout actually. They’re just living a semi-normal life now, as if these things really never happened. AND GETTING MARRIED WHAT LOOKS LIKE AS SOON AS LUPIN HEALED UP!!!

Y’know what? Fuck it, the show gets a 5/10 now. I now have another scar adding to the many reasons why I don’t trust shoujo anime. Considering Cardia is almost lifeless woman, isn’t it a terrible lesson to girls that you don’t need a personality to get a man, you just have to be pretty? Bloody fucking hell, I’m done talking about this piece of shit. BE GONE WITH YOU!!!

THE GOOD

  • Nothing, I can’t see any good right now through these black-coloured eyeglasses

THE BAD

  • Villains die easily and for no real reason
  • Chance after chance to save some face and they failed every time
  • Terrible end to what started as a curious romance
  • Campy as fuck and doesn’t deal with the fallout at all

Episode Score: 1/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

A pretty typical episode this week. I’m getting kind of annoyed that we’re having these side episodes now during this trip to El Dorado. The kind of episode we saw this week should’ve been one of the more earlier ones, but instead we’re getting this well after. The episode itself wasn’t terrible per se, but this villain wasn’t as interesting, the supporting characters didn’t have any life to them, so it was hard to feel for George and his mother, it really was just an episode where the three of them showed up somewhere, found a Horror and then killed it. Nothing more, nothing less.

THE GOOD

  • Well…I suppose there was a bath scene…

THE BAD

  • Weak villain and supporting cast

Episode Score: 3/5

Imouto sae Ireba Ii. (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

Wow, the episode was a real letdown. It’s pretty much sequelbait, which I’m totally up for a second season of this, but man oh man they really didn’t resolve anything at all. Second season is basically going to be the following arcs:

  1. Itsuki’s series turning into an anime and the hardships involved
  2. Miyako starting her job as an editor in order to become Itsuki’s editor
  3. Chihiro feeling she needs to reveal her gender to Itsuki
  4. Itsuki admitting his feeling to Nayuta
  5. Haruto continuing his pursuit of Miyako

There’s probably a couple more things in there, but those are definitely the five major ones and all of them remained unresolved. So a second season? I’m down, but man I wish this final episode had a lot more going on with it. The origin story was bad, the board game was depressingly funny and that was pretty much it.

THE GOOD

  • High chance a second season will come, based on the sheer number of unresolved arcs

THE BAD

  • There really wasn’t anything defining about this episode, went out with a whimper

Episode Score: 3/5

Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

I’m really disappointed in this final episode. I mean sure, I enjoyed the ridiculousness of Kino having to have a final standoff with like 100 sheep as if she’s starring in her own massive Kill Bill-level movie fight scene, but in terms of a finale, it was EXTREMELY weak. Not to mention, the whole fourth wall breaking of Kino haphazardly saying goodbye for the season’s end wasn’t really that funny, nor entertaining, it was just a silly way to end the season. This still was the show that emotionally struck me the most this season and I would 100% watch a second season of this show, but man oh man was this ending weak sauce!

THE GOOD

  • Absolutely insane final battle with a herd of sheep

THE BAD

  • Weak way to end the season, no real emotion and a terrible meta ending

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Konohana Kitan (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

Wow, a weak episode with quite the interesting ending. Tsubaki as we learn is actually Okami from a long LONG time ago. Apparently Yuzu stumbled into a time warp and ended up when Tsubaki was starting out as a wish giver. And when Yuzu makes a wish, it’s actually for Tsubaki (aka Okami) to have a home of her own, which ends up being Konohanatei. All in all though, the episode wasn’t that great and really ends the season on a bit of a downer, there were so many better episodes this season that this final one really doesn’t give the show its due.

But after 12 episodes, I would 100% watch a second season if it were to come back.

THE GOOD

  • A very interesting ending, relating to Okami in her past

THE BAD

  • Very weak final episode
  • Zero hot springs scenes, HOW ELSE WOULD YOU END THE FINAL EPISODE?!!!

Episode Score: 3/5

Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

Same as last week, just a cute episode, nothing overwhelmingly special. Continuing how they first met, followed by the two girls she works with squealing as they hear the story and fall in love with her boyfriend themselves. It’s funny though, as they call him Chisato’s future wife, not husband. I guess Sora just can’t do much with that super young boy look he’s got going on.

THE GOOD

  • Same ol’ stuff

THE BAD

  • Nothing special, just a nice little episode

Episode Score: 3/5
