Week # 1 – Winter Anime 2018

Week #1 has arrived with the 2018 winter anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

A Place Further Than The Universe (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

What a fantastic first impression this show made. It’s not over-the-top (albeit the facial expressions can be), the concept is actually quite interesting and the characters thus far in Mari and Shirase really sell you on the entire show. Both together right from the very start work off each other so well, while on their own they are still quite interesting characters. I’m very interested in this show now, definitely on my radar and I can’t wait to see how this expedition to Antarctica actually turns out.

THE GOOD

  • Strong lead characters
  • Very upbeat show

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

That was a fun nostalgia trip. Yes, I did in fact watch Cardcaptors as a kid, though I watched only pieces of it here and there, since I only saw it in the early morning as I was getting ready to go to school. The episode as a whole was a fun nostalgia trip, but in all honestly I must admit I’ve either outgrown the show, or my tastes just don’t fit in with the show anymore. I still enjoyed the episode for what it was, but I don’t think there’s any chance of me going through a whole 22-episode run of the show.

But if you are a giant Cardcaptor Sakura fan, you’ll love this show. And you’re gonna go broke again on all the merch. Lots of new jewelry and a new staff now to buy.

THE GOOD

  • Fun nostalgia trip

THE BAD

  • I get the feeling I’ve outgrown the show

Episode Score: 4/5 ***DROPPED***

Citrus (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

So, uh…I don’t know whether to be pissed off or amazed based on the ratings thus far for this show after one episode. I mean, let’s take into account that it’s a little bit dirty, given Yuzu’s style, Harumi showing her boobs a little bit and of course, Mei being a dirty little minx. Given the boob shot, the inappropriate touching and quite honestly, the semi-rape of Mei forcing herself onto Yuzu, I would’ve imagined this show getting a low rating, because critics generally hate this stuff.

Yet it’s a 7.78 on MAL right now. I’m curious…is this because it’s LGBT? Because it’s a lesbian anime? Because if that’s the case, I’m seriously fucking pissed off. There are a million shows that do the very same thing and they get blacklisted, but this one? Why’s it getting the free pass?

Now in terms of my own thoughts, I like the show. I’m a little thrown off by how forceful Mei’s been thus far, but in terms of the characters, I’m 100% behind this show, I love Yuzu as our main character, Harumi is fun as well and I really REALLY like the twintails girl.

Ah well, we’ll see how it goes.

THE GOOD

  • Love the main character, lot of life emanating from her

THE BAD

  • Um…quite possibly a rape being committed. At least sexual assault…

Episode Score: 4/5

Grancrest Senki (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’m noticing this year I’m making a judgment call in that I’m not being patient with shows I’m getting an “it’s shit” vibe from. This lasted less than 5 minutes and I was already not liking the direction. It reminds me a lot of Chain Chronicle, which I also dropped in the first episode because it loads on the death and destruction right from the get go, the character end up feeling uninspiring and you’re kinda just left in the dark with no clue what’s really going on.

My expectation for the opening 5 minutes of an anime’s first episode is that you don’t bog down a newcomer who doesn’t know the story (if it was a light novel, manga, etc.) if the anime is already an established series, filling the episode with nonsense and endless death and destruction. You’re not giving us a reason to care about those who die, the villain that killed them, all that jazz that should keep us invested.

So yeah, see ya later shit anime.

THE GOOD

  • Nothing at all

THE BAD

  • Death and destruction from the start, with no reason for us to care
  • Bogged down with nonsense and story elements we have no understanding of yet

Episode Score: 1/5 ***DROPPED***

Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

It started off good and then I realized this was all the show had. Don’t get me wrong, I think the idea is super cute, but man oh man I can’t sit through sketch after sketch after sketch of the same thing.

  1. Nishikata looks at Takagi
  2. Takagi tricks him into doing something
  3. Nishikata’s a dumbass and falls for it
  4. Takagi wins and giggles

It’s adorable at first, but gets old EXTREMELY FAST! The first time was a joy, the second time cracked a smile, but the third time…I just got bored. I think this show might be good for some, but if the show’s just going to stick to a single idea and spam it like this, I will get bored extremely fast and not want to watch, so I’m cutting it while I’m aware now.

THE GOOD

  • The two make a good match and are super adorable

THE BAD

  • However the show suffers from extreme repetition, to the point I was bored after the first 10 minutes

Episode Score: 2.5/5 ***DROPPED***

Overlord II (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I FUCKING MISSED THIS SHOW!!!

This was one of my favourite shows when the first season came out and quite possibly one of the best MMO-related anime that has ever come out. Returning finally for a second season, things are very much the same, much to my relief. Seeing everyone back and pretty much having the same looks and personalities, I couldn’t be happier seeing Momonga, Albedo, Shalltear, Cocytus, Demiurge, Narberal, Aura and Mare and of course, my favourite anime mount ever, HAMUSUKE!!! Everything’s back in full swing, the only thing missing is a new enemy to fight. But then again, we’ve got “something” as the episode ended. Either way, I’m down for another season of this badass show!

THE GOOD

  • Everyone’s back and I couldn’t be happier
  • Nothing’s changed, touched or been fiddled with

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Pop Team Epic (Ep.1)

…This was the greatest/weirdest/dumbest/most confusing/most meta thing I’ve ever watched. I’m not going to list it here anymore, but I will continue to watch it. This is because I legitimately cannot write about this show, it’s mind-breaking. Besides, if you’re going to watch this show, watching it without any knowledge is best.

For the love of god, watch the show and see how long it lasts before you snap, hahaha!

THE GOOD

  • N/A

THE BAD

  • N/A

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Really enjoyed this one. Based on the ratings, this might be my “HOW DOES NO ONE LIKE THIS?!!!” anime, because I fucking adored this episode. I’m now super hungry because of all the ramen, the main character (I consider Yuu to be it, not Koizumi) is fan-freaking-tastic, the comedy is on-point and the visuals are great as well. I don’t see why people hate it so much.

Is it because of the girl constantly talking about loving Koizumi? So what?

Is it because she stalks Koizumi? It’s an anime, grow the fuck up.

Is it because it’s just about ramen? You liked a show about figure skating. No one cares about figure skating.

But yeah, this show is great, I don’t care about what anyone says.

THE GOOD

  • Great main character
  • Lots of ramen

THE BAD

  • I’m way too hungry after watching this show

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Wow…I don’t know whether I should be praising this anime’s first impression or smacking it about. Because this episode was funny, adorable and really enjoyable, especially considering that this anime is all about shogi and I absolutely cannot stand shogi. I could not get into shogi anime like 3-gatsu no Lion because of the material (and because it was depressing as fuck), but this one I’m liking thus far…

…HOWEVER!!! There is a nine year-old girl in this show and already we’ve seen her showering and she’s pulled the main character (who’s 16) on top of her in a classic harem situation. So, um…that’s a thing. I guess we’ll have to see where this anime really wants to go…

THE GOOD

  • Really funny first episode
  • Loads of quirky characters

THE BAD

  • I now have to go to jail for seeing a naked nine year-old girl…TWICE!!!

Episode Score: 4/5

Toji no Miko (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I lasted 5 minutes. It’s dumb enough that it’s just girls with katanas fighting things without a costume, just fighting in their school uniforms, but the characters are uninspired, the story from what I gathered via skimming the entire episode makes virtually no sense and there isn’t a single thing I saw that makes it flourish. It’s not even an ecchi-ridden show, which is shocking that they didn’t have panty shots up the ass given how boring this show is.

Bye bye!!

THE GOOD

  • Nothing really

THE BAD

  • Everything. Was boring and uninspired

Episode Score: 1.5/5 ***DROPPED***

Yuru Camp△ (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Not too shabby for a first episode. The main girl in Rin comes off a bit boring, but once Nadeshiko enters into the mix, things start to really brighten up. This will easily be a show that while isn’t the most memorable, this will be an adorable show that you just sit down, watch silently and leave with a smile on your face. I’m definitely getting Flying Witch vibes from this show in terms of being quirky, but also being very serene and easy to watch. Interested in how this goes further.

THE GOOD

  • Calm, serene slice of life with a bit of quirkiness

THE BAD

  • Nothing too memorable, but I can’t complain

Episode Score: 4/5
