Week # 2 – Winter Anime 2018

Week #2 has arrived with the 2018 winter anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

A Place Further Than The Universe (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

It’s weird to me after two episodes that I love the show as much as I do and I haven’t taken a single screenshot yet. That’s how good this show is, it invests you in the comedic stylings of these over-the-top girls on their epic quest to freeze their teenage butts off! I enjoy the hijinks so much that I forget to pay attention to good grabs, but at the same time, the show doesn’t really go out of its way to put the girls in situations, both sexual and non-sexual that would take me out of the moment enough to take that picture. Sure, new girl Hinata’s got some bouncy boobs, but the show doesn’t plaster them front and center the same way other ecchi-ridden shows do. So yeah, the show’s so good, I’m forgetting to take screenshots of it.

THE GOOD

  • Cast keeps getting better with Hinata added in
  • It’s so easy to get invested, you don’t lose focus

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Citrus (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I’m sorry, but I’m fucking done with this show. Sexual assault, repeatedly. An asshole of a grandfather that is getting me as annoyed with the school aspect of the show. Over and over again, the show is misleading viewers into believing this show is worth something because it’s two girls in love. I do not care that at the end of this episode Yuzu admits her feelings for Mei, it doesn’t discard the fact that the way every “sexual” shot between the two has CLEARLY looked like assault more than love.

I actually still semi-like this show, Yuzu’s a really good character. But this show is an absolute insult to my intelligence and it legitimately makes me sick that this show is not only getting higher ratings than a lot of better shows, but the praise it’s getting. This show is no different from any other ecchi ridden show, but people are giving it a free pass because it’s LGBT. The show in its entirety is garbage, Mei as a character is garbage, the “hardships” that their grandfather is causing is garbage, the fake “falling in love” story that we’re being fed with Yuzu is garbage. Everything in this show is designed poorly and only acts to interest you because it’s fucking yuri.

I like yuri, but at least shows like Queen’s Blade and Seikon no Qwaser don’t hide it. They’re shit yuri shows and they’re proud of it, Citrus is trying to make you think it’s actually on par with some of the better drama anime out there.

They’re not fooling me.

THE GOOD

  • Yuzu is still a fantastic main character

THE BAD

  • I cannot get past how the sexy shots are displayed more like an assault
  • Mei is a terrible character, maybe she gets better when Yuzu opens her up, but right now she’s infuriating to watch
  • The grandfather isn’t a good villain, he’s just an asshole and I get disgusted watching him
  • I don’t get the feeling of wanting to watch these two overcome things, I just want to stop watching the show

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED***

Dagashi Kashi 2 (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

It’s nice to see the show back, albeit the same problems still exist. I said it way back when the first season came out, the show is fun and has its moments, but it spends every episode mostly on the gimmick of Hotaru telling you pointless stories about a dagashi item’s origins, which unless you’re a snack historian (all four of you), it gets old really REALLY fast. The episode was still fun, but like the first season, this show will constantly handicap itself by sticking to this formula and not just having episodes where they have something fun outside of Kokonotsu’s shop. Maybe if one half of the episode was the gimmick, the other was just silly hijinks, it’d be a better show. But instead, the show will continue to only just be good and not great.

THE GOOD

  • Happy to see everyone back
  • Same ol’ shtick

THE BAD

  • Also same ol’ shtick, gimmick gets old when used the entire episode

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I am extremely interested in this show. The vibes I’m getting are very similar to Isekai wa Smartphone, which ended up being one of my favourite shows that season. The idea of an overpowered human in a MMO world has worked well with me so far and this show is also taking a very interesting approach to the concept. Satou is extremely overpowered but it also feels like throughout this show he’s going to be trying to go out of his way to not use any of that power. Which naturally means he’ll have to use Meteor Rain at some point. Very good first impression.

THE GOOD

  • Interesting concept and main character

THE BAD

  • Nothing to really complain about, just want to see more of the world and the characters

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.13)

THOUGHTS

Returning after a brief break, the show picks up sort of where it left off, with essentially another filler episode as Gina faces a trial in preparation for their trip to El Dorado. There wasn’t too much to speak of here, a lot of mystical bullshit being given out by the Makai village elder, nothing that really adds to the plot. However Gina’s trial was very fun to watch, great battle sequence and a fitting end as we see truly how powerful she and a lot of Makai alchemists are. But this episode was not the hardest-hitting comeback I was hoping for, as the show continues to hold back getting to the end goal.

THE GOOD

  • Great battle sequence during Gina’s trial

THE BAD

  • A lot of nothing dialogue
  • Show continues to take its sweet time getting to El Dorado

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Huh, I thought I would’ve been put off by this show, but I’m actually really interested after one episode. A little violent, but at the very least we’ve yet to see an actual kill, rather just the end result for now. Quite a few interesting characters, especially the guy dressed up as a girl. I’m not sure how I feel about that meek upcoming hitman, he’s a little bit of an ugly duckling in a show like this.

THE GOOD

  • Interesting premise and characters

THE BAD

  • Need a little more from this show

Episode Score: 4/5

Märchen Mädchen (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

This was an “interesting” episode. I thought from the very get-go I would drop it, just because the OP even is littered with nudity and butt shots, but as of this first episode, while I wanted to know a little bit more as to what the hell was going on, I actually enjoyed what I watched. The main girl Hazuki was okay, but it’s the red-haired girl that really sold me on giving this show a shot, absolutely loved her. I can’t really say much either way, I need another episode to truly figure out if it’s worth watching, or if it’s just fanservice and nothing more.

THE GOOD

  • Interesting premise
  • Decent characters

THE BAD

  • Unsure if the show is going to be 100% fanservice or 50/50 split with a decent story/concept

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Miira no Kaikata (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I had zero expectations with this show and I left in a massive “AWWWWWWWW!!!” state over a freaking pudgy ball of cloth!!! Seriously, you would think nothing of this show being cute but man oh man does it manage to not only get past being weird, you legitimately think a tiny pudgy mummy is actually freaking adorable! My brain is hurting as it tries to compute this, but I’m dead serious, it’s the most adorable thing I’ve seen this season. It’s funny, adorable and doesn’t demand too much of your focus. Should be a nice little comedy this season.

THE GOOD

  • It shouldn’t be cute. It’s so freaking cute!
  • Funny at times

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Overlord II (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I’m unsure where I stand on this season so far taking more of a lean to this Lizardmen arc, rather than focusing on what Momonga is doing. Considering the season is 13 episodes, I worry this will take too much time away from the main cast, unless they’re quickly woven into this “purge” the various lizard tribes are about to face. Granted, I actually enjoyed this episode, especially once Lulu was mixed into the fray, she might just be my new favourite character on the show. But yeah, I just hope they either weave everyone else into this soon, or end this arc faster so we can get back to what I thought I was watching this show for.

THE GOOD

  • Enjoying the new characters, especially Lulu

THE BAD

  • I worry this outside arc is going to take too much time away from the main cast

Episode Score: 4/5

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Okay, I’ve had enough of you elitists out there! A 6.27?!!! WHAT SHOW ARE YOU WATCHING UNDER THIS TITLE?!!!

Because what I watch is fucking fantastic. I legitimately do not understand what people aren’t liking about this show. The characters are all quirky and fun, the premise is silly, but not so silly it gets lost. You know what? Let me combat the complaints I can think of:

1. The over-the-top climax reactions of the food – YOU WATCH FUCKING FOOD WARS AND LOVE IT!!!

2. The silly lesbian romance Yuu’s trying to have with Koizumi – You’re rating Citrus a 7.50 right now (as of Jan 14th) and the main character got sexually assaulted in the first two episodes!

3. The show’s just about ramen – WHO DOESN’T LOVE RAMEN?!!!

So yeah, fuck all of you who are rating the show so low it’s causing the rating to dip as far as it is. I adore this show AND YOU’RE ALL WRONG!!!

…So in terms of the episode, it was fun as all hell. I’m really into Misa now as well, she’s actually a lot better of a character than I thought from her first impressions in Episode 1. She even gets along with Koizumi, which is now apparently a gimmick for everyone who isn’t Yuu, which just makes her struggles that much funnier. However, I have to dock points because of the pineapple ramen. As an anti-pineapple on pizza guy, I cannot sit back and let this show get away with such blasphemy!

THE GOOD

  • I don’t know who I like more now, Misa or Yuu, they’re both great foils to Koizumi’s lack of personality

THE BAD

  • I’m hungry again…
  • Pineapple ramen

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I’ve learned in anime there are three types of parents. Ones who are useless, ones who are assholes and ones who are dead. In this case, the second applies to Ai’s mother, who is leaps and bounds beyond the line of an absolute cunt. But then again, she falls into the category of an over-the-top strict parent, so it’s not out of the ordinary, but I will admit this final five minutes because of her really took me out of the show. Before that, the introductions to the three other young girls Mio, Ayano and Charlotte (especially Charlotte) were absolutely fantastic and added to the already colourful cast of characters. We also get Yaichi not playing like a moron anymore so that’s a plus, things are definitely improving.

Side note, how is it that we’ve had all four underage girls bathing (Ai’s now had two scenes) and yet Kaika nor Ginko have had one? This is bullshit!

THE GOOD

  • Loving the whole main cast now with the addition of the three younger girls who will be around Ai

THE BAD

  • Ai’s mother really put me off at the end

Episode Score: 4/5

Yuru Camp△ (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Much like the first episode, this was just a very nice sit down and relaxing show with a few really funny moments, aka Nadeshiko smashing into the glass and a dog headbutting the shit out of Rin. I like how it’s also taking things slow, they’re not jumping to immediate camping trips with the entire cast together, in fact Rin’s trying her ass off to ensure that doesn’t happen (though Nadeshiko appears to be making a habit of fucking up those plans constantly…) and that’s more than okay, as I feel like the show might run out of steam if all the girls are together right away. But yeah, a very solid episode again this week.

THE GOOD

  • Same positives as last week, calm, relaxing episode with some funny stuff sprinkled in there

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

  1. I’m hoping they develop Hakata more because I feel it could turn into something really good. How to Keep a Mummy is super cute. Wasn’t expecting to enjoy it, but I also hope it develops beyond the cutesy stuff because I can’t see it surviving a whole season otherwise. A Place Further Than the Universe also seems to be much better than originally anticipated for me, and I’m hoping things a bit more serious. Thanks for sharing! I love reading your thoughts and how you have things laid out in good and bad. Makes it easier to understand it as a whole. 🙂 happy watching.
