Week # 4 – Winter Anime 2018

Week #4 has arrived with the 2018 winter anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

NOTE: There aren’t a lot of pictures this week. It’s not from laziness, I legitimately didn’t find a need to grab that many screenshots this week. Really surprising to me that so many episodes yielded no reactions from me.

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

A Place Further Than The Universe (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A good episode, though not nearly as impactful as last week’s episode. Though the emotion turned up slightly when the subject of Shirase’s presumably dead mother came up, I didn’t feel nearly as emotional as I did with Yuzuki breaking down when she finally had some friends to be around. It was still a fun episode to watch, I feel like it’s almost impossible not to fall in love with these four girls, as together they are just remarkably entertaining and their overwhelming joy is infectious. But compared to other episodes, this one didn’t have the same levels of fun as the first three.

THE GOOD

  • Continues to be a entertaining foursome

THE BAD

  • Nothing truly momentous on this episode

Episode Score: 4/5

Dagashi Kashi 2 (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Nothing special here, a little Beyblade-esque action, Hotaru ripping off her skirt (as she tends to be a constant tease) and a little past Hotaru we see while she was still a child. There really wasn’t anything memorable this week, as the show continues to just be “okay” at best. It really is the facial expressions and especially Saya that keeps me into this show. Because it’s certainly not its overwhelming charm.

THE GOOD

  • Hotaru sans long skirt

THE BAD

  • Boring overall episode, nothing special

Episode Score: 3/5

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

What a strange spot to end an episode. Don’t get me wrong, the episode was still quite good, we got introduced to more of the world and now the three slaves are with us full-time now it seems. But for the episode to end with no cliffhangar and I’m unsure if they’re even “halfway” through this labyrinth, it felt like an odd spot to stop the episode. I felt they could’ve spent less time with Zena showing him around the city, maybe add another two minutes to the dungeon and establish a real end point. But either way, it wasn’t terrible.

THE GOOD

  • Happy to see Tama, Pochi and Liza as party members now

THE BAD

  • Odd point to end the episode
  • First half spent a little too much time showing him around town

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.15)

THOUGHTS

That was an interesting episode, although when this new character is just another Horror and ends up dying, it kind of wastes the entire episode. Sure, does it introduce us to the villains a little more? Yes, but at the cost of an entire episode? I’m not so psyched. The episode was enjoyable, don’t get me wrong, but with no one to attach to, the scar-eyed Horror’s death meant nothing. If anything it only served to show how sexy that villainess is and that’s it.

THE GOOD

  • Intrigue with scar-eyed Horror character and female villain

THE BAD

  • 100% wasted potential, deaths were meaningless, carried zero weight/impact

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Pretty good episode, keeps the mystery running as we see a little bit of backstabbing from Banba’s informant as Lin seeks to kill that piece of shit guy who’s been killing all these young women. I like how everything is constantly moving, there’s nothing falling by the wayside, no one’s getting lost in the shuffle, the plot and all the characters in it are moving at the same pace towards their separate goals. Only one or a few of them however will reach the end, while the rest will meet their end. Really enjoying the show thus far.

THE GOOD

  • Everyone’s involved and moving
  • Healthy amount of mystery and intrigue

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Märchen Mädchen (Ep.3) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

I lasted about 5-7 minutes into this episode and I’m lost. There’s too much going on, too much terminology and the girls just aren’t selling it well at all. Couple that with the show being a magical girl show mixed with tournament formats and you get a show that’s too complicated for how simple it actually is. Not worth trying to follow.

THE GOOD

  • Butts?

THE BAD

  • Overly complicated for a simple premise
  • Characters just aren’t that interesting

Episode Score: 1.5/5 ***DROPPED***

Miira no Kaikata (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

HOW DOES THIS SHOW CONTINUE TO BE SO DAMN CUTE?!!! With both Sora and Mii catching a cold, the cuteness and funny stuff actually got turned up. Not only that, but with Kaede now being put into the forefront, we continue to round out the main cast, especially now that we see her “alter ego” upon wearing glasses. Everyone does their job to keep things running smoothly and keeping smiles on our faces. Hell, even Pochi’s really putting work in. Really fun episode this week.

THE GOOD

  • Everyone’s playing a part in the show, no one’s getting buried

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Overlord II (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

I actually left this episode confused and slightly irritated. I know, Ains has been ruling under the expectations his guardians have towards him, it’s become really his new life now. But the way that he treats the Lizard Men is quite uncomfortable and it obviously is by design. I don’t have to like it, it’s a reality of how things are, but it doesn’t discourage me from being a little miffed at it. The show currently is taking a direction that I’m not 100% behind, so I’ll admit that while the cast is still fantastic, the story as it’s progressing is not nearly as fantastic and that worries me.

THE GOOD

  • Ains and the Lizard Men finally cross paths
  • Crusch is getting impatient and wants love, making things even funnier between the two of them now

THE BAD

  • I really don’t like the direction of things right now, there’s no real villain in this fight currently

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Not a bad episode, but this one definitely had the least amount of funny and/or memorable moments out of all the episodes thus far. Everyone got a chance to have their ramen climax, but none of the skits this time around felt all that memorable. I wonder if it’s because they’ve exhausted all of the really good options, or if this was just a weak episode as a whole? Either way, not the best episode in the world

THE GOOD

  • Ramen. Just ramen.

THE BAD

  • Nothing memorable at all this episode

Episode Score: 3/5

Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

An okay episode this week. I’m not sure how I feel about Yaichi taking on another disciple, especially one that shares the same name and similar looks to Ai. It makes things a little too weird, a little too off-putting. Also putting in the “drama” of him basically “cheating” on Ai by taking on another disciple, it just muddies the waters even further, NOT TO MENTION YOU DON’T CHEAT ON A NINE YEAR-OLD GIRL, BECAUSE THERE SHOULDN’T BE ANYTHING THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Don’t even get me started on him letting Charlotte think he’s taking her as his bride…

THE GOOD

  • Some good jokes here and there

THE BAD

  • New Ai is a little off-putting
  • The show’s getting a little too uncomfortable with the “he likes grade school girls” gimmick

Episode Score: 3/5

Yuru Camp△ (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A better episode given Nadeshiko’s overwhelming insanity, holy crap was she ever on full-hyper mode during this episode! With the trio doing their own thing and Rin doing her own thing, you got different sights and different hijinks, Rin’s being a little odd. I’m surprised she stood there waving at the camera as long as she did. Once again, this show is very much one that you can relax watching, it’s just that occasionally we’ll get episodes like this where Nadeshiko really sells you and goes over the edge to the point you have a wide smile on your face. Because she’s just that damn infectious.

THE GOOD

  • Nadeshiko upping her game this week
  • Variation with the trio and Rin doing their own separate trips

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

  1. Glad I’m not the only one who dropped Maerchen Maedchen during that third episode. First episode had some interesting ideas. Second episode kind of dropped the interesting ideas and just went with a standard going to have a tournament thing and then the third episode just had the characters babbling about stuff that is probably going to be important later but they didn’t exactly make me care enough to stick around.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the season. Looking forward to next week.

What made things even worse, is the show throws that it’s a show that needs ecchi to keep you interested, because it’s loaded in the OP, so you know that’s what they know they are. In the first episode, she’s running around naked. After that? Nothing really. They just throw exposition at you, they didn’t even take the easy way out and have butt shots the entire time.

      1. The OP is dreadful though. Almost all the scenes depicted are from episode 1 or 2 and they use the scene of her running naked with the book like 3 times during the opening as if that is some highly significant moment in the story.

Are you telling me, Karandi, that her running naked with the book isn’t the most significant moment in that story? Because as far as I’m concerned it’s THE ONLY significant moment in that story! XD

      3. Well, I guess you could make a looping gif of the sequence and then you can watch it on endless repeat.
Actually, I’m sure someone somewhere has already done that.
