Week # 5 – Winter Anime 2018

Week #5 has arrived with the 2018 winter anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

NOTE: There aren’t a lot of pictures this week. It’s not from laziness, I legitimately didn’t find a need to grab that many screenshots this week. Really surprising to me that so many episodes yielded no reactions from me.

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

A Place Further Than The Universe (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Sigh…there’s always gotta be pointless drama in anime where it’s super happy. Look, I get why they had Megumi be jealous and try to put a stop to Mari’s plans for Antarctica, I get the whole “You didn’t actually need me, I was the one who needed you.” bullshit, but it’s just that, bullshit. It wasn’t necessary, they could’ve just done a “Megumi feels like she’s being left behind” sort of story, it didn’t need the plotting behind the scenes crap. Either way, it appears we’re past the bullshit now and it’ll be time for the actual adventure. Hopefully we’re not too held down in the drama of that as well.

THE GOOD

  • Touching moments

THE BAD

  • The Megumi angle at the end was unnecessary and could’ve been something a little less extreme

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Dagashi Kashi 2 (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A better episode this week and there’s actually a plot to be had. We get the idea that it’s 100% confirmed that Kokonotsu has eyes for Hotaru (a real shame for Saya) and for whatever reason, this moment appears to be the last for the two, as Hotaru has vanished and not returned for her usual dagashi lessons and harassing of Kokonotsu at the shop. Now next week I guess we’ll find out why. It’ll probably be something dumb, that’s just how the show is.

Also…where is this new older woman? She still hasn’t shown up yet.

THE GOOD

  • Hotaru/Kokonotsu inching closer
  • There’s an actual story to be had leading into next week

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A better episode than last week, full of action and interest now that there are two new slaves being brought into his party, one of them actually knowing who he is, which is VERY curious, especially given her voice. She comes of very much like she’s actually an evil girl and perhaps trapping him into something down the road. Either way, a nice story this week, the three girls got battle experience, Ichirou has now become a hero, which I’m unsure if he’ll just be that or if his “alter ego” that he dressed up as to take on the demon lord, if that’ll be his hero image. There’s even a continuation on the humans learning to accept demi-humans story with that douchebag that kicked them the episode before. A lot going on and my interest is not waning on this show.

THE GOOD

  • Lots of battles
  • Ichirou becomes what he wants to be, a hero
  • More girls into the fray!

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.16)

THOUGHTS

These filler episodes are hit and miss. Luke’s recent filler episode was really good, this one? Not so much. Nothing happened, there were zero horrors to speak of, the main villain of the episode didn’t get any real comeuppance (that the main cast would’ve seen) and hell, the backstory to Sword was lazy as all hell. He started training because someone (presumably his father?) and then he lost his little sister in an explosion (that seems like a Horror caused) at a research facility next to the school she was at. It’s a weak story, he doesn’t see her die in the way Luke saw his mother die, how is the main character’s motivations so half-assed compared to Luke, who’s clearly a supporting character?

But yeah, very weak episode this week.

THE GOOD

  • Intrigue with the Pedro/Monica story

THE BAD

  • Extremely weak delivery and completion of this sidestory
  • Bad backstory for Sword, didn’t care at all

Episode Score: 3/5

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

I knew right away Banba wasn’t dead, after all you don’t have someone so imperative to the story in the OP that much and kill him a third the way through. However, I didn’t expect him to be the Niwaka Samurai AND for all the villains of this story to be either dead or in prison. It’s weird seeing all the loose ends tied so soon, which only means the real danger is coming in the next eight episodes or however long this season goes for. Which yes, also means that at some point, a couple of these characters we’re used to, they’re going to die. It’s a tough idea to hang onto, but who knows, maybe it actually goes the route of Bungo Stray Dogs for example and no one major actually dies. But given the amount of death in this show, I’m expecting at the very least the baseball pitcher and probably the avenger to be killed.

Also, the idea the show name comes from this baseball team of hitmen and such, that’s hilarious.

THE GOOD

  • Everyone getting their comeuppance

THE BAD

  • Felt way too soon to get everything we wanted, I would’ve thought this episode would’ve been Episode 11 or 12, drawn out after a while

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Miira no Kaikata (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A good episode, now that we’re starting to see other characters gets pets of their own. Conny is going to be an interesting one, mostly because he’s the derp of the pets and has a really silly gimmick where he just gives the thumbs up to everything. He got like the derp horse eyes which is hilarious to me. He helps anyway because it gives Tazuki something to build off of, rather than just wanting to torture Mii all the time. So we’ll see where this goes, not to mention we’ll be seeing Asa get her own little dragon at some point as well.

THE GOOD

  • Tazuki has something to work with now
  • Conny is a giant derp and I love it

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Overlord II (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

MUCH happier with this episode. The battle went as expected, they lost handily to Cocytus, to the point none survived. Believing they have use still, Cocytus convinces Ains to at the very least revive Zaryusu and we’re led to believe his brother will be as well. As for the remaining chiefs, it’s hard to say, though if anyone, the brute Zaryusu actually fought will probably be the only other one to be revived as the other two were only important in their unique looks and nothing more.

Also, they peeped in on Zaryusu and Lulu fucking!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

THE GOOD

  • A fitting conclusion to the Lizard Man arc
  • THEY FUCKING PEEPED ON THE TWO LIZARDS FUCKING, BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

THE BAD

  • Aura and Mare are scarred for life

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Decent episode, but it’s definitely making me think that this show only has so many legs to stand on here. The more this goes on, the less and less I’m finding it overwhelmingly good. I don’t think the show is bad by any stretch, but it’s starting to have the same feeling I get from a show like Dagashi Kashi, where the show isn’t bad, but it’s no longer doing anything that really props me up and want to rate it highly. The girls are still funny to watch and holy freaking hell do I want some ramen, but the show is no longer blowing me away as it did in the first three episodes.

THE GOOD

  • I really REALLY want to try that tomato ramen Koizumi was eating

THE BAD

  • The show appears to have stopped being super interesting and just something I watch that’s at a consistent 3-3.5/5 rating

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

I was on board the entire way until Ai’s third match in her exam…was Ai. That makes zero sense, how does this Ai get a far “easier” match, when the original Ai (I already hate the show for having two Ai’s) got Ginko in her third match?! Not to mention, Hinatsuri had won earlier in the match but didn’t notice and Yashajin ended up winning in the end. Sure, it sets up a rivalry, one that maybe started too soon, but a rivalry nonetheless. They’re both growing up, as shogi players and as young women as well, so it’s a good progression. But I’m still admittedly frustrated with how they set up Yashajin’s exam.

THE GOOD

  • Strong character growth from both Ai’s

THE BAD

  • Piss poor setup of Yashajin’ exam

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Yuru Camp△ (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

A fun episode again, filled with hot spring trips, hot spring failures and a lot of food, sleep and gorgeous starry night sky views. This is the kind of show you want to just turn your brain off and watch, it doesn’t demand too much and yet rewards you with just enough silliness and really relaxing content that you can just let your eyes take in and not need to think about it too much. Now I’m just hoping the next trip we get has Rin with everyone else, it’s time to come together and not be a loner all the time.

Also, switch to summer at some point too, I don’t need to think about cold weather every time I watch this show.

THE GOOD

  • Everyone played well this week
  • A bit of everything, hot springs, food, breathtaking views, all that jazz

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

One comment

  1. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t entirely feeling the Megumi drama at the end. It was a long time coming and I’m glad that the show addressed the issue between the two girls, but it felt sudden by the end.
