Week # 7 – Winter Anime 2018

Week #7 has arrived with the 2018 winter anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

NOTE: There aren’t a lot of pictures this week. It’s not from laziness, I legitimately didn’t find a need to grab that many screenshots this week. Really surprising to me that so many episodes yielded no reactions from me.

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

A Place Further Than The Universe (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

A tougher episode to swallow, given the focus on Shirase’s mother. There’s a clear motive here on the part of the expedition to do something very important that they don’t want to divulge into with the girls. My guess, either to at least construct a grave for Takako or even darker, try and find her remains. I truly get the sense from the overwhelming positive and funny nature of the show that the other shoe is going to drop and I’m 99.9% sure that this motive is what will bring the show to that very moment. Still a fun episode, I just know now for the final six episodes I’m going to be bracing for impact.

THE GOOD

  • Fun, yet somber, really good emotion

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Dagashi Kashi 2 (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

No Hotaru in the entire episode. I have nothing else to say.

…OR AT LEAST THAT’S WHAT I WOULD’VE SAID LAST WEEK, BUT HOLY HELL THIS EPISODE WAS FUNNY!!! Yutaka is fucking hysterical and really brings out the best in Kokonotsu, just like Hotaru does. By the way, I know he’s going to be her brother, he’s the same level of insane and he has the same violet spiral eyes as Hotaru, it so fucking obvious, you’d have to be blind not to see it. Also we finally saw that other girl, for two seconds in a picture and walking across the street and falling. So I’m assuming we’ll finally see her next week?

But seriously, two episodes without Hotaru is a fucking travesty.

THE GOOD

  • Yutaka is the fucking best
  • Jokes are on full high here

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Not a bad episode, but nothing spectacular this week, aside from two pretty elves. The first half with the market and play stuff was actually pretty boring, but once we got to the introductions to the pretty boy elf things picked up a little bit. But all in all, there just wasn’t anything truly exciting about it, the only real notable stuff was that of a fan service nature this week and while the show is indeed partially that, it usually has other interesting things going for it as well. Just a weak episode, I suppose.

THE GOOD

  • Pretty boy and girl elves

THE BAD

  • Very boring throughout most of the episode
  • Flying ant attack wasn’t that interesting to watch either

Episode Score: 3/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.18) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

I’m starting the episode now. El Dorado is in their sight. It’s time to see if this show is going to try or fail one more time to lose itself to me.

And after this episode…it’s survived. The episode itself wasn’t overwhelmingly good, but it did what I asked it to do, it finally got them to El Dorado and we even know that Sophie’s brother is involved in what El Dorado is slowly becoming. Whether he’s actually King or not, that’s still yet to be seen, but the groundwork has been laid. The action was fine, Sophie having an actual use now makes her no longer just a crying little girl, so there’s definitely progress finally taking place. Apparently, Gina had to leave in order to facilitate it, but whatever right?

Can I also note how amazed I was to see that hacker not die, ESPECIALLY after he said “I will give you this information in case something happens to me.”?!

THE GOOD

  • Sophie finally has a role beyond crying about everything
  • El Dorado is finally here and we have information on Sophie’s brother

THE BAD

  • The loss of Gina for really no reason other than her to come in and save the day in a later episode

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

I’m really hoping the Ninja and Samurai live through this series, they’re such perfect rivals. I thought Lin and Banba were good together, these two however are just hysterical, a natural rivalry. Pretty good episode as a whole, though I’ll admit I’m kind of getting tired of “the big villains” getting killed off so easily. Speaking of be killed off, we now have another character I don’t want dead, in that woman that killed the Kakyu leader. She’s drop dead freaking gorgeous!

THE GOOD

  • A fantastic new rivalry is born
  • More characters I’m interested in

THE BAD

  • Why are the “big villains” so easy to kill in the show?

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Miira no Kaikata (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Pretty good this week, nothing over the top levels of special, just a really solid episode featuring our three pairings thus far. Got your adorable stuff with Isao hugging the shit out of Mii and Conny, you have some “action” so to speak with the mandrake getting loose, there’s quite a bit to go after. The only negative I’d say this week is that the three pets learning to write and going nuts, that bit lasted a little bit too long and didn’t end up yielding any jokes really, which is what I was waiting for. But regardless, a solid effort.

THE GOOD

  • Everyone getting a moment to shine

THE BAD

  • Writing section lasted a little too long, with no real payoff.

Episode Score: 4/5

Overlord II (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

I don’t know what to think here. I know Sebas isn’t turning against Momonga, so is it Solution just being afraid of him acting so “human”, or is she a villain who’s turned from her own free will? Either way, I’m intrigued. As for Climb and company, I’m not sure what to think about them either, much the same way I struggled with the Lizardmen in the early going. However, I get the sense this group will be harder to judge and I now expect more from them, since the Lizardmen have set a bar to reach. We’ll see what happens.

THE GOOD

  • Intrigue continuing from the Sebas mini-arc here

THE BAD

  • Unsure about Climb and Princess Renner

Episode Score: 4/5

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

So it’s at the point that I’ve come to the decision to drop the show, but with a caveat. I’m not actually dropping the show off my viewing lineup, I’m just dropping it here on the page, because I cannot for the life of me say anything new about the show anymore. It’s delicious ramen and pretty girls, they’re not exactly changing the formula. The show is an average of between 3 and 4 out of 5, it’s nothing too special, it just has fun with a bunch of girls eating delicious food. If this is your thing, it’s good, I don’t feel like I can explain it much further anymore.

THE GOOD

  • N/A

THE BAD

  • N/A

Episode Score: 3.5/5 ***DROPPED***

Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

An emotional episode with an ending so cheesy, I better eat it now before it starts getting all moldy. The whole episode revolved around Keika as her fall continues to worsen, but finally finding enough strength in herself to get her game back and seemingly restart her journey into becoming a player. She claims she’ll nullify her demotion point or quit…yet when she loses her second game to Ai, she decides not to, thus nullifying the bittersweet loss we saw. I thought it would’ve made sense to take the focus off her completely as she decides her talent would be better served teaching than trying to go pro, but instead the loss really was meaningless and makes this entire episode a colossal waste of time. The emotional value was strong, but in the end when you really think about it, nothing was gained or lost here.

THE GOOD

  • High emotional value

THE BAD

  • Waste of an episode if nothing changes in Keika’s situation, apart from “she’s better at shogi now”

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Yuru Camp△ (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Very fun episode this week as like I’ve said before, Rin and Nadeshiko together really bring out the best the show has to offer. This time we get an actual camping trip, equipped with endless “Umai!”s while eating food, lovely sights and a drunken neighbour camper who insists on trying to give the two high school girls rum. It was a very fun episode with all the shenanigans involved on this trip and just makes you want to see this with the other two from the club as well. Also, who’s this fifth girl in the picture? We still haven’t seen her yet, unless that’s supposed to be Rin’s friend, maybe?

THE GOOD

  • The duo once again make the best out of the episode
  • A lot of funny moments

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

One comment

  1. Death March is kind of amazing in that there are very few shows that a flying ant attack wouldn’t make slightly interesting. And yet, this show managed to continue to be pretty flat and underwhelming even through a flying ant attack.
