Week # 8 – Winter Anime 2018

Week #8 has arrived with the 2018 winter anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

NOTE: There aren’t a lot of pictures this week. It’s not from laziness, I legitimately didn’t find a need to grab that many screenshots this week. Really surprising to me that so many episodes yielded no reactions from me.

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

A Place Further Than The Universe (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

A decent episode, mostly focusing on the girls adjusting to life at sea, aka throwing up a lot cause they get seasick. It’s really the first step in their journey to Antarctica and only the beginning of many trials to come. Though I must admit, this expedition is going to be quite short, episode-wise, as at best they have five episodes left now and I’m semi-convinced Episode 13 will be after they’ve returned home. So with that in mind, they may only be spending four episodes in Antarctica, which honestly seems less than ideal. It also means that any time for emotion will be quite short as well, considering I’m still bracing for the final realization from Shirase that her mom is indeed gone.

THE GOOD

  • Entertaining to watch the girls adjust to life at sea

THE BAD

  • Slight worry with the amount of time left in the season

Episode Score: 4/5

Dagashi Kashi 2 (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

…I mean…Owari’s not a bad character, but how did she become as hyper as she is?! I swear after how Yutaka was talking about her, she was going to be some shy and quiet girl that Hotaru would work her way around to “breaking”, the same way she’s done to Kokonotsu and Saya. Instead, we get the classic hyperactive ditzy girl who’s late all the time. So she’s half-Hotaru, but with lateness. Not bad, but not quite what I was expecting. Also, I think I need to see her with the other girls, especially Saya, before I really make judgments on her. After all, she already has the advantage of being gorgeous, so seeing Kokonotsu’s reactions to her aren’t at all surprisingly.

Also, now I’m annoyed that Hotaru has been gone for three whole episodes. She’s literally the entire intro and she’s been MIA for three weeks. What the hell, man?!

THE GOOD

  • Owari is a fun character

THE BAD

  • Owari also wasn’t quite what I was expecting, nor what I think the show needed
  • Hotaru being gone for three straight episodes now really shows

Episode Score: 3/5

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

The intrigue moves up from here as what will likely be the plot of the rest of the show is starting to surface. With Mia, the elf girl now awake and mobile, we have enemies that want her back, thus more adventures to have. The episode itself wasn’t much to praise though, there’s your usual adorable moments with Tama and Pochi, but realistically speaking, this was a filler episode through and through, nothing too special, but nothing harmful either.

THE GOOD

  • A plot is starting to surface

THE BAD

  • Filler episode, nothing truly of note to speak of

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.19)

THOUGHTS

Meh at best. Again, the villains overpower Sword and Luke, a new villain dies as soon as he appears and we’re left as Sword and Sophie are in dream land where their loved one is alive and well. The only question I have is still what Martin’s role is, whether he is King, or if he’s nothing more than another statistic used in the experiments that lead to the “true” El Dorado. I’m admittedly frustrated, because it feels like they’re biding their time before they can actually follow through into the final few episodes. Really makes me believe this show is a season too long.

So we’re back on notice again, just after being brought off of it. I’m no longer demanding anything story-wise, I just want a good episode. And they’re not delivering right now.

THE GOOD

  • Nothing really beyond a small amount of plot advancement

THE BAD

  • New villain, killed immediately by other villains
  • Clear delay of the true meeting of Sophie and Martin whether he’s dead or alive

Episode Score: 2.5/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Decent episode as we start a new sidestory with Enokida being targeted by an anti-hacker hitman group. The set up was all right, the enemies in this case are not really all that interesting (their hacker’s cute though), but there’s more interest in Enokida’s backstory, aka the fact he’s supposed to have been killed by orders of his father for hacking into a police server during election season where his father was running. So there’s definitely interest on my part, but the villains here are pretty weak, in my opinion.

THE GOOD

  • Interesting backstory with Enokida
  • Fun little setup episode

THE BAD

  • Villains for this anti-hacker group are pretty weak

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Miira no Kaikata (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

And we’re all rounded out now. Daichi’s in the fray, he’s got his own adorable pet now and we’re officially at a full cast and now the question becomes “Is there a story?” or is this just hijinks the rest of the way? I’m down either way, so long as the story isn’t some bullshit like someone coming back to take Mii home, or some weird sort of story in that aspect. I’m not invested in this show so we can have some overly depressing story to end the series on a happy note.

THE GOOD

  • More cuteness with new characters

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Overlord II (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

I really am so put off that the majority of this series really has nothing to do with Momonga, but man am I impressed how well the show has been able to do without him really around. This Sebas arc has brought so much intrigue now after the end of the Lizardmen arc. It’s brought real emotional investment and now brings in a number of characters I have an interest in seeing progress and overcome their own conflicts whether external or internal. Climb specifically is a story we can all get behind, someone who knows he’s weak and shouldn’t be able to accomplish what he wishes he could, yet with the right teacher, the right person watching over him, he can learn to pull out a miracle. It’s a story I’m enjoying and can’t wait to see where it ends.

Well…so long as Climb doesn’t die.

THE GOOD

  • Very strong sidestory
  • Amazing how well the show does without its main cast ever being around

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

Pretty standard filler episode as we set up for the tournament arc that will finish this season. Got some wins for both Ai’s and Keika, more over-the-top loli bullshit, which admittedly I think crossed a social line, as I have to ask how Yaichi even has a career after what happened on the broadcast. But most importantly, the direction I feel the tournament arc is going to go, it severely bothers me. With the introduction of Ika, who I presume will be the end boss for the girls, you know that Ginko is going to lose to her in the round before the finals and somehow Hinatsuri is going to be the one to face her and somehow defeat her. Yes, a nine year-old girl is going to be the winner of a female professional tournament and it’s going to drive me absolutely insane. I can see this a mile away and I will be shocked if I’m wrong.

Also maid Ginko is sexy as fuck!

THE GOOD

  • Villain introductions bring the end game out
  • Maid Ginko

THE BAD

  • Filler episode, nothing overly special
  • The “Loli King” angle is starting to really become a little too much

Episode Score: 3/5

Yuru Camp△ (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

A fun episode to say the least, as we watch the girls go on a camping store journey and get extremely depressed with how they can’t afford anything that’s cool. It was entertaining to watch, but man oh man was there really nothing happening. The only real thing of note aside from their plan to go camping over Christmas, is that their new substitute homeroom teacher is the crazy drunken lady from last week’s episode (I believe it was last week, if not, it’s the week before), which can only serve to make things even funnier as we edge closer to the end of the season.

THE GOOD

  • Fun watch, easy to just sit down and relax to

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5
