Week # 11 – Winter Anime 2018

Week #11 has arrived with the 2018 winter anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

NOTE: There aren’t a lot of pictures this week. It’s not from laziness, I legitimately didn’t find a need to grab that many screenshots this week. Really surprising to me that so many episodes yielded no reactions from me.

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

A Place Further Than The Universe (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

A good episode at best, nothing too special for me here. Sure there was quite the backstory and overcoming of her past in Hinata, but really this episode was just a giant bunch of “we’re with you!” stuff with her friends, specifically Shirase trying to help her overcome her swim teammates’ bullying that caused her to quit school. It’s what you’d expect, petty bullshit that led to a much more extreme path than it ever should have, but it’s nothing that got me overly invested and the conclusion wasn’t THAT satisfying either. There was some fun stuff in there, but I left thinking this was a real waste when now we’ve only got two episodes to resolve Shirase and her mother.

THE GOOD

  • A bit of emotional value through an anti-bullying measure

THE BAD

  • Ended up feeling more like a throwaway episode, when Shirase should be the focal point now

Episode Score: 3/5

Dagashi Kashi 2 (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

Pretty fun episode, given the ridiculousness of Kokonotsu’s dad being the one in the hospital (Hotaru likely being the one who sent him there) and the show actually taking a moment to put him back on the manga track. Also, based on the preview for next week, it appears Hotaru is finally back.

So that’s okay…having your main character off the show for half the season…morons.

THE GOOD

  • Hilarious opening act with the hospital delivery
  • Hotaru potentially coming back
  • Focus on Kokonotsu’s manga again, which was the whole background to his story with the shop

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

Now this is where I’m really interested in the show. The fact that real-life objects are appearing in this game world and Ichirou exploring all the systems of this world, specifically the storage system. There’s a lot of interest here in this world beyond just it being full of cute girls and I love the direction it’s taking, even if this means no end villain. To be fair, Isekai wa Smartphone didn’t really have one either, it was just fun and I’m more than happy if this show does the exact same.

THE GOOD

  • Real interest stemming from the mechanics of the game world

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Garo: Vanishing Line (Ep.22)

THOUGHTS

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand right back to the boring depression bullshit. Holy hell this show can’t decide if it wants to be badass or depressing as fuck. The biggest cliche in the book is active as well, as Sophie thinks somehow this is all her fault. Look, I can understand the stress and shock of seeing her brother turn into a fucking monster, but to feel like she’s responsible, SHE LITERALLY JUST TRIED TO KILL HIM BECAUSE SHE KNEW HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE LIVES LOST!!!

I mean come the fuck on, stay consistent in your storytelling here! Speaking of over-the-top changes, how is Zaruba back and there isn’t any explanation as to how? I’m kind of annoyed I have to finish this show now…

THE GOOD

  • …I guess the shock on Sophie’s face when Gina kissed Sword was funny

THE BAD

  • Total reversal, Martin is no longer a thing, Sophie is filled with regret and we’re right back to where we started

Episode Score: 2/5

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

Well here goes the final arc, I guess for another two whole episodes more. It’s kinda weird how the end boss will surely fall so quickly, I feel like Fei-Lan should’ve been around since about Episode 6, y’know? Either way, we’ll see how it goes, but in all honestly, unless they throw something extra in the mix, he’s not really the best end boss. He’s not despicable, he’s not dastardly, he’s just a killer through and through, there’s nothing special about him beyond his history with Lin. So his killing at the end of the series (assuming that’s what’ll happen) isn’t exactly going to be all that great.

The episode as a whole though? Nothing special either.

THE GOOD

  • Nothing really stood out for me

THE BAD

  • Fei-Lan is a very weak final villain

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Miira no Kaikata (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

…HOW THE BLOODY HELL DID A NEW CHARACTER JUST COME IN NOW AND BE BETTER THAN MII?!!!

But yeah, that exactly what Aayan, this Anubis figurine that contains a soul inside of it, he’s done just that. I imagine a lot of it has to do with the voice, but either way, his way of speaking alone made him so freaking entertaining and just adds to the already absurd randomness the show is chalk full of. The episode as a whole was still quite good as well, full of comedy and silly moments like the pets trying to cure Sora’s hiccups because they thought he was dying (the whole you die from 100 hiccups superstition) and ended up scaring the hiccups out of him in the most ridiculous and hilarious way possible. But yeah, somehow this show continues to recover from “meh” episodes, coming right back with an interesting premise, some hilarious skits and a new character that not only adds to the show, but in my opinion soars above the rest of them thus far

THE GOOD

  • I freaking adore Aayan
  • Hilarious moments like the pets trying to cure Sora’s hiccups

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Overlord II (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

HOLY FUCKING SHIT THE FIGHTING IN THIS EPISODE!!!

So…if you watched the first season, you know this show is capable of going from “intriguing” to “OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!” like the snap of your fingers. This episode? Exactly that. Intriguing story with Sebas/Tuare, interest from Climb/Renner, all of it coming to a head…and then…HOLY FUCKING SHIT ENDLESS FIGHTING FILLED WITH DECAPITATIONS AND OVER-THE-TOP DEMON FIGHTING!!!

But more importantly, aside from how fucking badass this episode was…um…how is Momonga considering Demiurge, ONE OF HIS FUCKING MINIONS, a potential foe? Unless he’s using his adventurer cover for this, that’s the only reason, but either way, this is REALLY intriguing now. Goddamn I love this show!

THE GOOD

  • Just watch the episode, bloody hell…

THE BAD

  • See above

Episode Score: 6/5

Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Wow, I pretty much hate Yaichi now and I don’t even care that he was stressed out of his mind. You never, EVER refuse the love of a tsundere (my good buddy Fenris would 100% agree with me on this one)! So now he has Ai and Ginko on his shit list, though then again, Ai loves everyone, so is he really? Regardless, a lot of good still happened. Yashajin is still winning, Keika finally became a pro player and now Ai is as well (despite the wedding-like ceremony, which was awkward as fuck!), so a lot happened. Now we see if Yaichi can finish the season and come back down from a 3-0 deficit. Me? I think he’ll still lose, the idea being that this is only the beginning of his journey to become the best shogi player ever. But then again, would it be that surprising if he takes the next four games to win it all?

THE GOOD

  • Keika finally achieving her dream
  • Both Yashajin and Hinatsuri are becoming stupid successful

THE BAD

  • Pure hatred for Yaichi, if he won’t take Ginko, there’s a line of us tsundere lovers waiting to have a crack at it (yes, I’m aware she’s not real, it’s a joke folks)

Episode Score: 2/5

Yuru Camp△ (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

A fun getaway, plenty to love here. Over-the-top food enjoyment, Toba being drunk as hell again and all the girls really meshing well together, it’s all here and it’s nice to have everything in the fold. In this episode, I got everything I wanted from this show and was able to just shut my brain off and enjoy what I saw. I’m not going to say it was an amazing episode, but it was a very enjoyable one. Actually, if anything, this show really got me fully into Rin now. There were episodes where I’m like “Eh, she’s fine, but I still want more…”, whereas this episode I left going “Yep. She’s cool.”.

THE GOOD

  • Everyone’s together and it’s meshing perfectly
  • Finally got behind Rin 100%

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5
