Week # 1 – Spring Anime 2018

Week # 1 has arrived with the 2018 spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

NOTE: I’m going to be doing something a little different this season. Not in terms of posting, but I’m going to be a lot more selective with shows, because my time is growing more limited with the spring offering more sports that I play to stay (sort of) healthy, there’s more social events now that it’s not miserable leaving the warm comfort of my house and I’m also throwing more work onto myself again with YouTube becoming a more prominent part of the CSRadical brand, per se.

So what’s going to happen is that after Week #2 when I (should) have seen every show at least once, I will take at most the 10 best ones and those will be the shows that I talk about all season long, biding the need to drop a show or two down the line. Now this isn’t guaranteed to be 10, it may be more if there really isn’t a show or two I can’t convince myself to cut, or it may be less than 10 if I don’t feel there’s enough shows worth watching. Either way, I’m shooting for a 10-show maximum per season, so I don’t burn myself out. If there’s shows outside of Crunchyroll’s simulcasts that I’m interested in (there’s already a few from past seasons I STILL haven’t watched…), I’ll try to get around them and do a full review of that show’s season, if I ever get around to binge watching them.

Alrighty! Let’s get to it!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

If you never watched this show before and you’re into slice of life, you’re really missing out. This show during its first season, in all honestly was the show that really brought all the emotions out of me during a really tough time in my life. Amanchu has a great ability to be unbelievably cheerful and silly, yet retains some really sad, depressing and honestly very real feeling emotions that affected me in so many ways, a specific episode where a kitten is brought into the fray really hit me hard, to the point I cannot watch that episode anymore. That might sound bad, but at the time it’s what I needed and now I no longer need it.

This episode mostly revolves around more happier themes, though I will be expecting a little sadness again, however this season in my opinion will probably be more geared towards Futaba and Hikari developing an actual romantic relationship. Futaba has gotten over her “new live in a new town” feelings and is happy again, so the lonely kind of depression is no longer an issue either. So perhaps this will be a showing revolving around the hardships of a first teenage romance. Regardless, the show is clearly skewing happy right now, so I won’t complain one bit.

THE GOOD

  • Seeing all the friendly faces again
  • I still adore the animation style with the facial expressions

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Akkun to Kanojo (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Oh dear god the absurdity is hilarious! Now it wasn’t nearly as funny as other shorts you’ll see further down the list, but this one definitely has a lot of charm going on for it, and in a short amount of time, so it’s not too demanding. Just the silliness of the boyfriend absolutely adoring her, but for whatever reason not wanting to get too close, so he talks down to her, but she’s okay with whatever cause she loves him so much…it’s so dumb that it works. Like, really well.

THE GOOD

  • Absurd premise, well put together anyway

THE BAD

  • We’ll see how it goes as the season progresses, but I kinda wish this show was a 6 or 7-minute short, not 3

Episode Score: 4/5

Status: Definite Keeper

Caligula (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’m very unsure about this show. Why? BECAUSE I HAVE ZERO CLUE WHAT’S GOING ON!!! Okay, that’s sort of a lie, I understand there’s some weird alien-like conspiracy thing going on here, where people are either living in a world created to be like a “peaceful version” of the real world, or they’re aliens infiltrating the real world and making time repeat itself. Etiher way, I kinda need an explanation to really grasp what I’m grabbing at. I will admit though that unless the show really kicks ass next week, I probably won’t keep it anyway, for the sole reason that the main character is boring as fuck and none of the others so far have been interesting either. But we shall see

THE GOOD

  • Curious concept

THE BAD

  • EXTREMELY boring lead character
  • No clue what’s going on really

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Status: Possible Drop

Comic Girls (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Dear god if this show can keep this up, we’ve got a show of the season potential winner here, goddamn was that an entertaining show! The voices are what really do it for me, holy freaking hell the over-the-top sounds Kaoruko makes are absolutely ridiculous and I love it. Good blend of silliness, the downright absurd and enough moe and ecchi to balance things out. This is definitely looking like a show I can shut my brain off and just have a massive smile on my face all the way through. So we’ll see if it does that all season long, because this show will definitely make the cut.

THE GOOD

  • Some of the most entertaining voices I’ve heard in quite some time
  • Great balance of comedy, moe and ecchi

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 5/5

GeGeGe no Kitaro (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

What a weird case. I’m told this is a comedy, quite light-hearted in fact. Yet some of the imagery was pretty horrifying, not to mention we see the main character forced to turn into a tree and now shot in the back with an arrow, not the most comedic then ever. The show as a whole was okay at best, I wasn’t wow’d by anything aside from Mana being super cute in the way that a lot of female characters in 90s anime really hit me, there’s definitely an old-school animation kind of vibe going on here, it’s just super crisp and HD now that it’s 2018. The characters were decent, the action was cliche cheesy 90s Saturday morning cartoon style, it was a fun little watch. Will it be one of the shows I pick next week? It’s possible, but this one’s definitely looking like it’s gonna have to squeak in there.

THE GOOD

  • I really REALLY like Mana
  • Art style is fantastic

THE BAD

  • Very dark for a light-hearted comedy
  • Nothing really grabbed me apart from Mana and the art style

Episode Score: 3/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Pretty fun first episode. While this show isn’t perfect, what will give it a pretty good shot at staying after the second week is it’s two leads and the ridiculous premise. A girl with psychic powers and a yakuza soldier, that alone is silly enough, but she’s a expressionless young girl who just non-chalantly throws things around without any care in the world. It’s going to be interesting how this show works as a slice of life comedy, given the yakuza background and the violent nature of her powers. But for the time being, I’d say it has a strong chance of being a show I see through to the end.

THE GOOD

  • Hina is fucking amazing
  • Ridiculous concept able to balance out with comedy

THE BAD

  • I worry this show will be very easy to make a wrong turn, given the yakuza angle

Episode Score: 4/5

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I gave it the full episode and this one really just doesn’t do anything for me. It’s already at a disadvantage with the yokai, spiritual world sort of plot, then double that with it being a show certainly geared towards a female audience AND on top of that, it was just really boring, uneventful and had really one joke the whole time with the “torture” Aoi was subjected to. I can definitely see this show interesting the people this is designed for, but for me, it’s nothing worth going after.

THE GOOD

  • Honestly, there wasn’t anything that great, it just wasn’t offensively bad

THE BAD

  • Boring show with a concept that already doesn’t work with me

Episode Score: 2/5

Status: Dropped

Magical Girl Ore (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Well that show was a hell of a mixed bag. Look, magical girl shows tend to be absolute trash, but this was really, REALLY funny trash, so I’m unsure where I stand with it. Maybe another episode would help? I do like the concept of the show, the absurdity of the show and well, Saki sells it pretty well, her voice actress is spot fucking on! So yeah, watch this show at your own discretion, as it’s all kinds of fucked up. But in a good way. Well, as good a way that anime can be without being SUPER illegal.

THE GOOD

  • Saki is fucking hysterical
  • Concept is bat shit crazy

THE BAD

  • Magical girl anime is still pretty trash

Omae wa Mada Gunma wo Shiranai (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I don’t know what’s going on yet, the show literally tells you nothing. Watch it, I’m being serious.

So…I’ll let you know next week, okay?

THE GOOD

  • Um…

THE BAD

  • …I got nothing

Episode Score: What?/5

Status: I don’t know…

Persona 5 The Animation (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’ll keep this short. I will be watching this, the show is good, but I’m not going to do this one on the weeklies, since I know everything that will happen, thus really defeats the point of talking about it. I could review the episode by the animation, voice acting, accuracy and such, but that’s not how I review on the weeklies, nor am I honestly that good at it. If you’re interested in a really cool anime featuring school kids fighting monsters and dealing with VERY SERIOUS real life issues, this is a badass show.

THE GOOD

  • N/A

THE BAD

  • N/A

Episode Score: N/A

Status: Will watch on my own time

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

…This is my favourite show ever. He’s a space mech pilot who loves eating food and when he gets mad he strips naked and kills everything. WHAT THE FUCK ELSE DO YOU WANT?!!!

On a serious note though, HE FUCKING EATS AND FIGHTS SHIT WHILE NAKED, AGAIN WHAT ELSE DO YOU FUCKING WANT?!!!

THE GOOD

  • See above

THE BAD

  • DID YOU NOT UNDERSTAND ME?!!!

Episode Score: ∞/5

Status: Best Show Ever (Also a Definite Keeper)

Tachibanakan Triangle (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Sigh…I can’t help but get annoyed when an ecchi show just automatically gets downvoted by anime purists. This show as I’m typing this is at a 5.73 on MAL and while I’m not bothered necessarily by the score, I’m annoyed that it’s downvoted obviously just because it has naked girls relatively early on. This is only accentuated by the fact that after watching this 3-minute short, I was smiling all the way through because it was just being silly and having fun with a concept that’s slightly different. It’s like a harem, except the main is also female. I’m curious to see where it goes and it’s easier to consume when it’s a short, doesn’t demand too much time.

THE GOOD

  • Very funny introduction to the show
  • God damn that naked silver-haired girl…

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

  1. I had the same thought about Gunma. I watched it and was just confused about everything, then a mayor showed up and I started thinking about government conspiracies. I’m not sure if this is what the show intended, but I’ll keep watching since it’s so short.

I’m just giving it one more episode just to see if it tells me what the fuck is going on, lol.

  2. I’m wondering if Gunma is just like a commercial for the district or something… Then the guy talking at the end… I don’t get it. Tiramisu is going to probably be the first mecha anime that I watch… It is weird that out of all of them this one got past my radar. I’ve already watched the first episode more than once.

Mech anime is generally too serious for me, so Tiramisu is a VERY welcomed show.
