Week # 2 – Spring Anime 2018

Week # 2 has arrived with the 2018 spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

NOTE: I’m hoping to post these every Monday now instead of Wednesday, this way I can focus on finishing the weekly over the weekend, rather than rushing on Mondays and Tuesdays after work when I’m already exhausted.

Also, if any shows don’t start up by Sunday this week, I will still look at them like I’ve been these first two weeks.

Alrighty! Let’s get to it!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.2) *Already Keeping*

THOUGHTS

And there’s what I was talking about. An episode that while it wasn’t the saddest, it definitely threw in some sad themes and yet came out happy and beautiful as all hell. With the addition of Kokoro now, we appear to have a younger influence on things, which could be a great mix with the cast we already have, especially with Kokoro being quite the tomboy. She’ll meld perfectly with this group. But yeah, the episode as a whole was very sweet, with plenty of over-the-top Pikari moments inserted in between.

THE GOOD

  • Kokoro is potentially a fantastic addition to the cast
  • Pikari on point this episode

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Akkun to Kanojo (Ep.2) *Already Keeping*

THOUGHTS

Hehehe, this show is adorable. Originally I thought Atsuhiro would be the one who sells this show, but I think this episode proves that it’s more Non who is pushing things forward, as when she gets super happy when she receives affection, it’s the most adorable thing.

The question remains though, can I talk about this show every week without it getting pointless? The problem I’ve had with 3-minute shorts in the past is that I can’t make a weekly post every time because the show doesn’t do much different. So far, so good, but I will admit there’s a very good chance I remove it from this weekly post, just because I’ll have nothing else to add. There’s no point in just saying “It’s still good.”, y’know?

THE GOOD

  • Non really sells the show when it’s at its best

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Here’s another show I’m surprised by the low rating. I’m not saying the show is amazing, but I’m not seeing anything that really bothered me. Is it because it’s an all-boy show? Who knows, but from this first taste, I see nothing wrong, so much as just nothing was overly impressive. However, I think that’s due to the show trying to introduce you to so many people in one episode, you really didn’t get enough time to get into anyone. If anything though, I will say as of post-episode, the male lead is not the most interesting character, while characters like Haruto and Yuuki were very interesting. As of right now, I’m more than okay with this show and I’m curious to see where it leads. It has a feeling that Code:Realize gave me at first, though that show was even stronger in the beginning.

THE GOOD

  • A number of interesting characters
  • A show that’s male-dominated and I don’t feel overwhelmed by the lack of women

THE BAD

  • Main character is leaving a little to be desired

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Status: Likely Keeper

Caligula (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I’m curious enough and the imagery we’ve seen thus far is cool enough that even though I still have no real understanding of what’s going on, well I mean, I have an idea but it’s nothing confirmed, but either way the show is interesting enough that I want to find out what’s up with the world and the characters within them. The leads are still not as interesting as I’d like them (other than the glasses girl), but the story and the mystery of the world as of right now are interesting enough for me to want to see what’s next. Will this show last? Maybe, maybe not, but it’s got potential to be very interesting, or just a colossal waste of time.

THE GOOD

  • Curious concept continues on

THE BAD

  • Main characters are still very weak

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Status: Keeper

Comic Girls (Ep.2) *Already Keeping*

THOUGHTS

Another really fun episode, not quite as perfect as the first episode, but retaining the qualities that I really enjoyed the first time. With the girls all going back to school, we’re getting a better sense of who they are, though Kaoruko doesn’t count, as she’s being the unrealistic “I can’t talk to people except for the ones I live with!!!” weird girl. There was a lot to enjoy, the art supplies trip offered a number of good jokes especially, so good on the show for keeping up the pace.

THE GOOD

  • Hilarity continues on with little deviation
  • We’ve got two different levels of things with school now added to the mix

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Crossing Time (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I can tell this show will be a quick paragraph because of it’s 3-minute time and the content. Regardless it was a nice episode about two girls at a train crossing just shooting the breeze until a playful prank by one of them gets the other to reveal that she’s actually in love with her. I don’t know if this will be the whole plot, but the interaction between the two was fine, nothing too special here. I might end up watching this on my own if it doesn’t get much more beyond this, but we’ll see. For now, it was a nice 3-minute sit down.

THE GOOD

  • Nice little love story developing

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Status: Likely Keeper (may watch on my own)

GeGeGe no Kitaro (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Two episodes down and honestly I don’t really have any reason to continue. The show like I said last week, it’s freaking gorgeous, I absolutely adore the art style, but that’s really all it has going for it. I don’t find the cast that interesting, aside from Mana, these episodic stories have been extremely boring and non-chalant, but most of all, I get the sense that this show is designed almost like a children’s show that you’d see on a typical Saturday morning run. Jokes, jokes, jokes, meet the bad guy this episode, he does a bad thing, hero fights and eventually wins with a super OP ability or some bullshit shenanigans. I think mostly this show just isn’t designed for me, so I won’t say it’s a bad show, but it’s just not anything that’s generating a lot of interest from me, if any at all.

THE GOOD

  • Art style is still fantastic

THE BAD

  • Very boring, bad comedy and didn’t get anything to attach to

Episode Score: 2/5

Status: Dropped

Hinamatsuri (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

This show so far is staying away from the dark themes, so we’re good thus far. With Anzu coming into the fray, I thought we might get something a little more risky, a little more dangerous, but it turns out she’s just a friend for Hina to bounce off of and just add more to the cast we’ve got. This episode also introduces us to Hitomi a little more and hell, I hope we get to see that bartender, Utako more. She was really fun and interesting (and super hot) as well! I gotta say, if this show doesn’t delve too far into the serious, there is great potential here.

THE GOOD

  • Anzu really blends well with Hina
  • Utako is a hidden gem on this show

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Status: Keeper

Last Period: Owarinaki Rasen no Monogatari (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I like this show and yet beyond just it’s light-hearted nature and vibrant animation, I’m not really sure why I like it so much. Maybe it reminds me a lot of Konosuba but going even deeper on a mobile MMORPG kind of deal here. The amount of fourth-wall breaking, over-the-top cheesy jokes and the cliche characters who are over-exaggerated in every single way, it’s just working really well. I wish I could put this into better words, but man oh man my brain is fried trying to to come up with a list here. I guess the easiest way of saying it, well…this show makes me smile uncontrollably. That’s a good start, right?

THE GOOD

  • Hysterical and whimsical
  • Random as hell
  • Super adorable

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Status: Likely Keeper

Magical Girl Ore (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I think based on how this show not only takes potshots at traditional anime, but is so unbelievably fucking weird that I think it automatically gets a free pass. Holy freaking hell this show is all over the place, but in a good way, an anime way. Cute magical girls? Nope, buff dudes. Over-the-top sparkly magical attacks? Nope, beating monsters to a bloody pulp with a blunt instrument. This show completely reverses everything you know and love about mahou shoujo and for a guy who normally cannot stand that genre, it’s a very welcome premise.

THE GOOD

  • So over-the-top random, I love it!
  • Reversal of traditional mahou shoujo anime makes for a better experience

THE BAD

  • I just hope the show doesn’t run out of jokes

Episode Score: 4/5

Status: Keeper

Omae wa Mada Gunma wo Shiranai (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

It’s dumb

THE GOOD

  • Pfft!

THE BAD

  • It’s dumb. You heard me.

Episode Score: NOPE!/5

Status: I still don’t know, but…Dropped.

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.2) *Already Keeping*

THOUGHTS

Same sillyness, little less space boy butt though. The dog section was funny and a little sad in a cheesy way, though I’ll admit the second half where he gets mad because some old mechanic lady screwed with his cockpit didn’t land as well as the bits before. The show is still certainly on a fantastic path, just nowhere near as strong as last week’s amazing episode.

THE GOOD

  • Dog section of the show was hysterical

THE BAD

  • Weaker second half

Episode Score: 4/5

Tachibanakan Triangle (Ep.2) *Already Keeping*

THOUGHTS

Yeah, I don’t care what anyone says, this show is hysterical. As someone who has zero issue with ecchi of any kind, this is exactly the kind of show I need after a shit day. It’s peppy, it’s cheerful and it’s stupid, in a good way. Yuu is your resident pervert, Iori is a nudist apparently and Hanabi basically falls into everything that involves a naked girl. It’s stupid fun, can we as an anime community stop raising our noses up just cause the show has ecchi in it?

THE GOOD

  • Still quite funny

THE BAD

  • The younger sister is kind of annoying

Episode Score: 4/5

  1. So far I haven’t dropped anything yet… Devil’s Line may be the first to go for me. I’m interested in the Butlers. I’m hoping there is a good story there. I also liked the way Caligula ended for episode two.

Caligula is doing just enough to keep my interest. Needs to really get going next week, or else it’ll be in real trouble.
