Week # 1 – Summer Anime 2018

Week # 1 has arrived with the 2018 summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Angels of Death (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I had no expectations for this show. It’s a horror anime and I generally don’t do well with horror anime. But I liked the look of the trailer I saw, so I gave it a shot. Holy shit this first episode was awesome! The scythe-wielding character was fucking sadistic and badass, the doctor was creepy as fuck and…honestly, who gives a shit about Rachel right now, she’s a blank slate. Unless something happens to her and she really changes, she merely serves as a vessel to all the extremes that live within this anime. I wasn’t scared watching this show, I was mesmerized by it, whether it was the atmosphere, the setting, the timing, the imagery, all of it. Loved every second of it.

THE GOOD

  • Fantastic imagery and character designs
  • A lot of mystery that adds onto the creepiness of the show

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 5/5

Asobi Asobase – workshop of fun – (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

At the beginning, I was thinking this was all right, the differences in the three girls was big enough that they all clash and mix at the same time. The “American” girl seemed like she’d be a real comedy gold mine…

…But then the second act started. And then the third act started. And then the fourth act started. And then I realized that the show has nothing to offer but the same jokes again and again and again and again and again and again and–oh, you get the point. The last act tried its best, but man this show is just too weird, not to mention the animation style just doesn’t work at all.

But the ending song was badass!

THE GOOD

  • I actually really like Olivia, she has potential

THE BAD

  • Absolute failure of having good comedy, nothing was funny so much as it was weird
  • Really, REALLY bad animation style

Episode Score: 1.5/5 ***DROPPED***

Cells at Work! (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

It’s such a weird show. It’s like…it’s designed for kids, yet ends up being kinda for that teenage shounen demographic instead. The concept is ridiculous, the voice acting is also ridiculous and the animation is extremely over-the-top. So naturally, I really dug this first episode, it’s 100% stupid fun and you get a weird education of the human body that only anime could possibly deliver.

I’ve never been so attracted to blood in my entire life…

THE GOOD

  • Absolutely adore both the red and white blood cell
  • Silly over-the-top nonsense that somehow also teaches human anatomy

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Chio’s School Road (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

That was a really good first impression. Chio is a mixture of a NEET, yet also wants to have a normal school life too, but her love for games kind of takes her out of the real world at times. Everything I watched in this episode was silly, over-the-top and super entertaining to watch. Mix that with Yuki, who’s super gorgeous and acts like an end goal for Chio and you’ve got a pretty good comedy going on here. I cannot wait to see the hijinks this girl is going to most certainly get into.

THE GOOD

  • I absolutely adore Chio
  • Great silly comedy without overdoing things

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Hanebado! (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Not the greatest first impression, but there’s still something there. You take a look at the smiles in this image above and you figure it’ll be a more light-hearted sports anime. But after one episode, it really, REALLY fucking isn’t. In all honestly, had the show not had the little asides with Ayano being an easily scared wreck and well, quite frankly the fact there are a lot of cute girls on this show, I’d be near dropping this show on the basis that it’s being WAAAAAAAAAY too serious and way too depressing in its first episode. But I’m curious and would like to see if maybe the show fucking takes it down a notch and starts having a little more fun.

Because seriously…I don’t need this much drama in a fucking badminton anime.

THE GOOD

  • I really like Ayano’s “KYAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!” scared self
  • Curious about this cast of characters

THE BAD

  • Way too depressing and serious for a first episode

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Harukana Receive (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I know what I’m getting into here. A beach volleyball anime comprised largely of hot anime girls in swimsuits with butt shots a’plenty. However, I’m also getting what appears to be a fun sport anime with moe and comedy and hopefully just a tiny bit of drama, unlike Hanebado’s first episode. So far so good with the characters, though Kanata being the one character with serious drama (FUCKING DEAD PARENTS, GOD DAMN IT, ANIME!!!) is lacking behind early on. Narumi is drop dead gorgeous by the way, Ayasa is right behind her and Haruka’s great too, though I will admit it’s like watching a hot version of her in a bikini and then a meh version of her in that summer dress of hers. Either way, I know what I’m watching this for and hopefully I get a good comedy sport anime out of it too.

THE GOOD

  • Great ecchi
  • Narumi is an early front runner for best girl
  • So happy that this will be a VERY upbeat anime

THE BAD

  • Obligatory one point docked off for dead parents story

Episode Score: 4/5

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I LOVE IT!!!

Once again, my love for super overpowered characters in the “transported into a game world” kind of shows shines through (yes, I’m aware it’s a shitty cliche anime, but it’s my shitty cliche anime, damn it!) and continues the same trends I enjoy with these shows. Pretty girls, over-the-top powers, a male lead who has no idea how to handle the harem he’s about to get, it’s all here. Throw in some good comedy thus far, a pretty decent side cast (especially the catgirl innkeeper) and I’m super interested in what this show does. It feels a lot like if Overlord had a half-human lead and this was the starting point of his empire. I’m so down for this.

THE GOOD

  • I adore Rem
  • I really like Diablo thus far
  • The animation was actually extremely good here

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 5/5

Island (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Wow, there’s a lot of intrigue with this show. The mystery of Setsuna’s (and Rinne’s) existence, what this “Island” is supposed to be, as it appears to be, at least at first glance, this mystical place that the mainland has no knowledge about, kind of like Themyscira in Wonder Woman. I have a few assumptions of things, most importantly I think Rinne isn’t actually going to die in the sunlight, she’s just a hermit who likes staying indoors and sleeping. How am I guessing this? I think her “mother”, Kuon is actually Rinne. They both look to be a similar age, so part of me wonders whether Rinne is Kuon from the past, or if they’re literally the same person, as if one was cloned or duplicated. As we saw in this episode, Kuon is clearly a hermit, living in her room with the lights off like a NEET.

Aside from all the mysteries and my hypotheses, I really liked what I saw so far. The main cast are very interesting, especially Setsuna and Sara, who was great comic relief as the episode neared its end. I’m definitely curious to see where this show goes.

THE GOOD

  • Curious about all the mysteries
  • Interesting main cast

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Mr. Tonegawa Middle Management Blues (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I thought after the first 5 minutes this wouldn’t go well…then it turned into an understated sort of cheeky comedy. There’s nothing overly hilarious, but it’s just smirk worthy and after one episode? I like it. Tonegawa is a badass and I also understand his frustrations with things too, he just wants things to be simple, easy and straight-forward…which things never are. He works under an extreme case of a crazy boss, all his employees are cookie cutter employees, the man just wants to live a simple, enjoyable life and he can’t. So it’s a show I watch and go “I get it, man…” and I like that so far.

THE GOOD

  • I enjoy the dry comedy mixed with a little seriousness
  • I associate with Tonegawa so far

THE BAD

  • Was a little confused to what I was watching at the very start, took a moment to get the ball rollin’

Episode Score: 3.5/5

The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

It’s bad. Real bad. I like my harems and ecchi anime, but this is pure trash, through and through. The story does not exist, there’s no comedy to the show, the main cast is bland and boring, especially Felicia. Sure, Run and Ingrid are kind of adorable and tsundere, but neither of them are overwhelmingly interesting, so they can’t even save the sinking ship that is this show. The idea as well that it’s a harem where the women are either calling him Father or Big Brother just makes it even worse. There isn’t anything of note to the show. Isekai wa Smartphone took the concept and ran with it, this one is doing nothing with it, except he can call a presumable love interest in the real world with it. That’s it, that’s all they could come up with. A giant meh from me.

THE GOOD

  • Run and Ingrid weren’t bad

THE BAD

  • Terrible main cast
  • Lack of story and concepts
  • Cringeworthy harem, everyone calling the male protagonist Father or Big Brother

Episode Score: 1.5/5 ***DROPPED***
