Week # 2 – Summer Anime 2018

Week # 2 has arrived with the 2018 summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Angels of Death (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Not as great as last week, but the intrigue levels are still high with this show. I continue to find myself liking Isaac more and more as the show goes on and Rachel serves to be a great foil for him. This episode though was missing quite a lot, specifically the creepy aura that the first one gave off with the doctor. I never felt anyone was in danger, I never felt anything honestly, beyond cracking a smile when the goofy facial expressions came on either Rachel or Isaac. Not a bad episode, but compared to the first impression this show gave off, it was certainly lacking in a lot of things.

THE GOOD

  • I continue to enjoy Isaac more and more
  • Rachel mixes well with Isaac

THE BAD

  • Lack of creepy aura
  • Nothing special really took place

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Cells at Work! (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Another fun little episode, featuring what happens when a scrape occurs. The platelets really took center stage this time around and did so extremely well. Though now that we’re two episodes in, I admit that there’s a small amount of worry within me, having to do with whether this show can keep it up. These first two episodes have been really good, but my brain is now wondering if with just two characters in the same sort of situations can keep this up for a full season. I’m not saying it won’t, but I’m saying I’m not necessarily sure whether this formula will still be as good by Episode 12, that’s all.

THE GOOD

  • Platelets stealing the show
  • Comedy still on point

THE BAD

  • Worry that this formula might get old at some point

Episode Score: 4/5

Chio’s School Road (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I loved this episode. Every act was great, ESPECIALLY “Bloody Butterfly” Chio. I want an entire episode to just be badass acting Chio, that was so goddamn entertaining. The three girls together in the second act, they also mixed with each other so well, though mainly Yuki does all the work, being the innocent one between the three of them, while Chio and Manana are just delusional idiots making stuff up as they go, only for Yuki to complete flip the script on them at any moment’s notice. I really hope that this show can keep this up, because after two episodes I am wholeheartedly enjoying this show, a true comedy through and through.

THE GOOD

  • Bloody Butterfly. That is all!
  • Great mix between the three girls

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 5/5

Hanebado! (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

A much better episode. I think knowing that this show is a little more serious helps now, as the first episode caught me way off-guard. I think with Nagisa starting to, y’know, stop being such a bitch, that also helps too. There’s a number of stories that this show can go with, obviously Nagisa proving herself, Ayano getting back into a game she currently hates, Riko legitimately beating her rival in Nagisa, hell you’ve got the younger brown-haired guy trying to find his game, there’s a lot to showcase here and we’ve likely barely scratched the surface of important characters we’ll see in this series, especially Ayano’s mother.

By the way, doesn’t her mom legit look exactly like Nozomi from Keijo?!

THE GOOD

  • Much better storytelling, less depression
  • With Nagisa being less bitchy, she’s far more interesting and loveable

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Harukana Receive (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Really enjoyed this episode. Very fun, happy, little bit of drama and Haruka actually managed to win by a sensible, not totally bullshit reason. Everything made perfect sense, nothing felt out of place or overly scripted to gain a particular result, it all came together nicely. Not to mention, the dynamic between Narumi and Kanata made for a good plot device and it even mixes further in the potential relationship that is there between Narumi and Ayasa. So with these four girls alone we’ve got several interesting storylines and we’re not even a quarter into the season and we’ll likely be introduced to the two blondes this next episode. A lot of positives so far.

THE GOOD

  • Haruka winning in a legitimate and reasonable way
  • Narumi/Kanata/Ayasa triangle is very interesting

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Holmes of Kyoto (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I made it 5 minutes. I was unbelievably bored. I really, REALLY don’t think this show was designed for me in any way. If you finished the whole thing and liked it, lemme know what it was, cause I didn’t find it before I gave up.

Episode Score: DNF ***DROPPED***

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

This show continues to be a gloriously trashy harem anime and I love it. Is it over the top sexual content? Of fucking course it is and the anime does not shy away from this at all. Shera’s boobs are constantly in motion, Rem’s waistline is center stage, hell the new Guildmaster got a glorious panty shot as well. This show isn’t hiding what it is, a show specifically designed for anyone who enjoys sexy anime girls and a bit of comedy mixed in there. Storywise, I can’t give you much, it’s just more of Diablo learning about the world, whether it’s why the levels of everyone are so low, along with more bullshit from that mage dickhead from last week. It’s just a plain ol’ fun show and anyone who gives it shit because it’s “fanservice” is missing the point.

THE GOOD

  • Glorious ecchi content
  • Shera at least taking steps away from being a dunce cap with big boobs, now she’s an independent dunce cap with big boobs

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 5/5

Island (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Still a lot of confusion, but still a bit of comedy and some sexual tension (and humour) keep this show in a good spot. It’s only Episode 2, so I can’t expect the show to tip its hand right away and honestly, I kinda like it that way. Sure, I don’t want the show to wait until the very end, but the whole mystery of the island, its inhabitants and the legends of the four main characters certainly make things interesting and in my case, make me patient to see how everything intertwines.

But then again, I could just be fawning over Karen. Holy shit, her summer outfit in this episode. Perfect.

THE GOOD

  • A few good comedy bits
  • Ecchi game is on point when it wants to be

THE BAD

  • All these legends are throwing my head out of sync trying to figure out what’s going on

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Mr. Tonegawa Middle Management Blues (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

After watching a second episode, the well’s completely run dry and I’m now seeing the show for what it really is. Very me at best with comedy that can be funny at times, but isn’t ever really showing that consistently. But the biggest reason I’m dropping this, is simply that I know this one will get lost amongst everything else. A plain show with a plain concept just isn’t going to cut it with the kinds of shows I’m watching this season.

THE GOOD

  • Nothing this time around

THE BAD

  • Upon a second viewing, it’s actually a very plain show, I don’t have much interest now

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED***

Overlord III (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

As always, happy to see the show back and hell, what a fun episode to kick things off. Again, nice to see folks back, but two new characters specifically that caught my eye, CZ (orange hair, eyepatch, squeezed the fuck out of comb-over penguin) and ESPECIALLY Lupusregina (red hair, dark skin) who is going to be pushing for an Eye Candy award this season, even if she never shows up again. It was a fun fluff episode, full of silly jokes and Albedo trying to fuck Momonga for the umpteenth time. The interest now lies in something that appears to sound like one of the players Momonga played with before being locked in the game world. The real question, is this a constant in this season, or is it a small arc? We shall see.

THE GOOD

  • Seeing everyone back, with a few new characters
  • Great comedy

THE BAD

  • Not seeing any of the girls in the bath…

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Phantom in the Twilight (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’m definitely curious at best. The action was awesome, the characters are all unique and interesting and the whole legendary monsters in the modern day is always an interesting premise. The guys are a little lacking in interesting personalities, but they make up for it in the abilities department. Lastly, Ton is a mixed bag. I like her and I don’t, she’s interesting, yet unoriginal, cute but also meh. I can’t get a good read on her yet, so we’ll have to wait and see.

THE GOOD

  • Interesting premise, great action
  • Nice diversity of characters

THE BAD

  • Guys are a little boring, personality wise
  • Not sure how I feel about Ton

Episode Score: 3/5

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Well this show certainly isn’t hiding what it is. It’s a harem set in a hot springs inn with a ghost that the MC will be seeing naked, or touching constantly. As this kind of show, it’s doing almost exactly what it needs to do. There’s a good reason for why everything is as it is, the wide range of characters is certainly there and the comedy is pretty good as well. The only downside so far is Yuuna’s voice when she’s embarrassed is sometimes a little too much and since this is a constant in the show, we’re going to be hearing this for a while. But for a first episode, it was still pretty good, I liked what I saw thus far.

THE GOOD

  • Good comedy thus far
  • Nice range of girls in the harem

THE BAD

  • Yuuna’s voice is a little much when overused in embarrassing situations

Episode Score: 4/5

There’s something there, just a matter of whether or not they can pull it out.
