Week # 4 – Summer Anime 2018

Week # 4 has arrived with the 2018 summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Angels of Death (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Nothing special this week, just killing time until the inevitable showdown with this floor’s boss. Cathy’s all right, I mean she’s a sadist, so let’s be honest here, she’s nowhere near as creepy as the previous two were. Really, man…they did themselves a massive disservice by having the doctor be floor boss number one, he’s been the best one so far without any real competition. It was funny though watching Isaac just be a complete dumbass and walk straight into every trap like he just doesn’t give a shit and Rachel just staring at him being like “…The fuck, bro?!” every single time. But yeah, I kinda want to get through Cathy quickly, because I want to see the next boss, who needs to be better.

THE GOOD

  • Funny exchanges with Isaac and Rachel

THE BAD

  • Weakest floor boss so far

Episode Score: 3/5

Cells at Work! (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

All right, I think this show is forever destined to be a show I think I don’t want to watch and then upon watching it, I keep loving it. Seriously, every week I think “This’ll be the episode it finally goes downhill.” and it doesn’t! Once again, really love RBC and WBC and now with the pink-hat wearing weaker white blood cell (can’t remember the term they gave her, started with an ‘e’), the cast continues to introduce new parts of my body that are way too good-looking and badass to be inside me.

And double props for having a good episode without the platelets even being in it!

THE GOOD

  • Love pink-hat wearing white blood cell
  • Continues to be cute, funny and informative

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Chio’s School Road (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A fun episode, nowhere near the hilarity of last week, but still very much enjoyed myself. The girls playing with the idea of being cool by holding a cigarette was very reminiscent of what a lot of us probably did growing up, thinking we’d be cool if we smoked. Then of course I understood that dying to cancer wasn’t that cool, so I never tried, but I digress! Other than that, the bit in the second half with Andou was pretty entertaining as well, though neither act threw me over the edge like other episodes of this show has done so far.

No crime committed, still a solid episode, just not the best of ’em.

THE GOOD

  • Enjoyed the two messing around with a cigarette
  • Andou and Chio continue to be great together

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Hanebado! (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

*sigh* All right, I’ve had it up to here with the show’s negative bullshit. It’s got until next week to stop pushing so much depression, anger and hatred into every episode. This might be a fun experience for some of you, but this isn’t the kind of anime I take pleasure in watching. If I wanted to be stressed out, angry, or whatever the fuck, I’d go back to my own reality, I don’t need to watch anime to add onto it.

Every single person on this show has someone mad at them. Every single person on this show has something to be stressed out about. Why is this fun to watch? Connie appears in this episode and I immediately get massive bitch chills. The closest I have to a character on this show that isn’t being an absolute downer is Riko and I imagine if I keep watching this show, that’ll change soon enough as well. Seriously, enough of the negativity already, there are better ways to convey the themes you want in this show without sacrificing the fun that the show has shown it can be!

THE GOOD

  • I mean…Connie’s gorgeous

THE BAD

  • I’m tired of every new character just immediately hating everyone
  • I’m tired of every character being talked about behind their back
  • I’m tired of not a single character smiling for an entire episode
  • And most importantly, I’m tired of not smiling myself when this show’s episode is over every week

Episode Score: 2/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Harukana Receive (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A fun episode, but taking a little more time to develop the partnership between Haruka and Kanata over anything else. Thankfully though, they balance out the mushy dramatic stuff with Claire being an absolute sexy goofball, so it all worked out nicely. Though I will say, the swimsuits Haruka and Kanata are using look terrible to me, at least on Haruka, it really does look like she’s forcing herself to wear it, as it looks absolutely horrendous on her. They need to take a look at what Ayasa and Narumi have got going on, they’re criminally good at picking out matching swimwear.

THE GOOD

  • Good balance of drama and comedy

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A more serious episode, if this show can truly have one. While it retains the usual harem ecchi fodder towards the end, the episode large in part showcases the darker side of a MMORPG world that we don’t think about, that being death. Many, many people die in the city from that single Fallen and the reality of the massive funeral with several graves became a thing, one Diablo admits he never thought would be a thing to consider in a game like this. This episode did what only a handful of Isekai shows do and they handled it pretty well.

As for our dark elf friend that got her clothes burned to a crisp, I expect we’ll see her next week to become the third entry in Diablo’s harem, as she’s clearly just interested in following a Demon Lord and Diablo just happens to be the first one she’s seen with her own eyes.

THE GOOD

  • Good focus on death and despair in a MMORPG world

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Island (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A good episode, but one that I need to dock marks off of for several reasons. So let’s get that out of the way, shall we?

  1. One full point is immediately taken off because my “No dead parents” rule was severely broken, for no reason in my opinion too
  2. Karen after wanting to leave the island so badly, seemingly returns after one day. That wasn’t ever explained to us that she just wanted to visit where her mother went, my assumption and I thought it was obvious, was that she straight up wanted to leave. Period.
  3. When she reaches the mainland, she loves it and then seemingly without any reason whatsoever, just casually returns to her father. Why?!

Like I said, the episode was still fun and such, but my god why did they have to include a dead parent trope in this? They could’ve just as easily had her mother say “Go back. Your father needs you.” or some sort of message that tells Karen “Hey, you can leave the island whenever you want now. But if it’s going to be forever, make it a reason beyond just wanting to leave.”. But instead, Mom’s just dead. That’s bullshit and I’m so tired of this garbage trope that never adds anything to the show. Just ask Harukana Receive.

THE GOOD

  • Karen evolving further as a character
  • Intrigue with Sara (ALSO…SHE’S ABOUT TO TURN SEVEN-FUCKING-TEEN?!!!)

THE BAD

  • Automatic one point docked for dead parent trope
  • Lack of explanation of why Karen returned to the island so quickly

Episode Score: 3/5

Overlord III (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Now I’m really curious what the enemy is supposed to be. I don’t know if Lupis is trying to do something (my brain is remembering the human sacrifices thing, even though Ains said no to innocent humans) or if she knows how dangerous this enemy if, but it looks like things are about to get really, REALLY bad. Not to much to speak of, just an endless parade of lovely ladies and more Carne Village stuff, but nothing truly notable again this week. Really starting to miss all the mainstays.

THE GOOD

  • I’m in love with waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many characters on this show

THE BAD

  • A little on the boring side, I like the characters here, but I need more

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Phantom in the Twilight (Ep.3) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

And we’re done here. The episode wasn’t terrible, but it committed the cardinal sin of just being boring. I think with Ton just being annoying as all hell and the three guys being very bland themselves, there just isn’t anything really pulling me into this show. No great comedy, no interesting story, no main character driving the show, there just isn’t anything spectacular about the show to make it a show I have to watch every week. I was curious after one episode and then they never followed through, so while the animation is really good, that’s all it really has to offer. And there’s plenty of shows that do that and also offer more.

THE GOOD

  • Honestly? The show isn’t offering much to say positively

THE BAD

  • Boring all the way through

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED***

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Yeah, this show is way too much goddamn fun. Sure, chalked up to the nth degree with naked women, bouncing breasts and whatever other ecchi content your heart desires, but the show regardless is still extremely entertaining to watch, with or without all the sexual content. Yuuna starts shit constantly, the new classmate in Chisaki acts as the modest girl to balance out the over-the-top cast of girls that round out the rest of the harem and now we also add the raccoon girl (whose name escapes me right now) acting as the true pervert while Kogarashi takes all the blame. Every trope of a harem anime is here and they’re turning the dials up to 11, so for a guy like me who always loves turning his brain off during a good ol’ comedy harem, this show is doing one hell of a job so far!

THE GOOD

  • Chisaki is quickly becoming my favourite already on day one
  • Raccoon girl acts as the most over-the-top, just adding onto the insanity

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 5/5

  1. I really hope Overlord won’t be about Goblins.now.

About Chisaki that was fast but for me Yuuna is still the best ghost girl.
