Week # 5 – Summer Anime 2018

Week # 5 has arrived with the 2018 summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Angels of Death (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

It’s a slow trudge through Cathy’s trials and continues to offer some overly convenient solutions to the problems they face, like I dunno…RACHEL MAKING A FUCKING BOMB TO GET OUT OF THE POISON GAS ROOM?!!! Yeah, a normal person would know how to do that. Sure. Though admittedly, I know want to see Zack overcome everything after seeing his childhood past, including him probably massacring the two adults who essentially enslaved him.

But most of all, I want Cathy’s head to roll. She’s starting to irritate me as well.

THE GOOD

  • Interest with Zack’s backstory

THE BAD

  • I’m really REALLY done with Cathy

Episode Score: 3/5

Cells at Work! (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Easily my least favourite episode so far, not that it’s a terrible crime though. Without the enemy being entertaining at all and honestly the majority of the episode being an over-abundance of shouting and fighting each other, there wasn’t as much time to really enjoy the show so much as just be slightly irritated by all the screaming, shouting and fighting. Wasn’t the best for sure, still had some fun moments, but all in all they spend way too much time with Memory Cell’s chaotic rambling and it got old pretty quick.

THE GOOD

  • A few fun moments scattered throughout

THE BAD

  • Too much screaming and shouting
  • Memory Cell got annoying real quick

Episode Score: 3/5

Chio’s School Road (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

The show keeps on rolling with another hilarious episode. Whether it’s Chio getting stuck in the men’s bathroom, Chio getting stuck in a window or Chio getting stuck having to deal with the disciplinary committee rep and thus having to do a hilarious friendship dance with Manana (seriously, that was so goddamn funny), there was a lot I was chuckling about during this episode. At this point though I will admit that I’ve missed seeing Yuki, as she’s been missing for the last couple episodes. She always acts as the counter-balance to the two girls.

THE GOOD

  • Both acts were great, specifically the Mananacchio dance

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Hanebado! (Ep.5) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

I can’t do it. I really love the groundwork this show has started, I really do. I actually like Nagisa and Riko, they’re good characters. But I am so tired of them slamming me over and over again with endless supplies of hatred, sorrow, fear and at the end with Connie, remorse. And then out of nowhere they pop in a massive bath scene and reverse all the terrible things that Connie appeared to have. I cannot make sense of this show and it appears that the show is trying to make it appear like things are getting better, but I’ve given the show too many chances already.

You can’t have a show that pretends to be fun loving and then have so many characters who deep down are ugly individuals. I hate Ayano, I hate her mother, I hate Connie, I hate a number of characters on this show. If you can deal with this level of negativity, that’s cool, but I don’t watch anime to hate things to this level. This level is when I need to back away.

I know this one might be a little controversial, because people seem to really like this show. So here’s what we’re going to do, something new I haven’t tried yet: Sell me on this show. If you think I should keep watching this show, tell me what you see in this, because all I see is so much negativity. Maybe I’m missing something, who knows. Just don’t spoil the show if you know what happens later.

THE GOOD

  • Well, the bath scene was quite…gratuitous

THE BAD

  • I hate way too many characters on the show, they have such ugly personalities deep down
  • Too much negativity for me

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED(?)***

Harukana Receive (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

So we’ve got our first full volleyball match going on and surprisingly they’ve held back on the first opponent. I expected them to get someone tough right off the bat, but they actually got someone at their level, if not just a little higher that it requires Kanata to use her brain a little more and strategize around the two, rather than beat them by pure skill. Appears she’s just trying to wear them out in this match by going for pokey after pokey. Lastly, we’re seeing the girl you can see in the picture above who doesn’t have a partner. I wonder what her significance is to the show?

THE GOOD

  • Well done volleyball match, nothing over the top
  • The Thomas sisters in those matching swimsuits…

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

A decent episode, though nothing special really here. Shera’s got a bounty on her now, so things are even worse, but the addition of Alicia, that red-haired, glasses-toting knight we saw, she’s here now and boy oh boy I don’t like her at all. She’s boring and as Diablo describes, she’s way too damn diligent to the point it’s actually irritating. Granted, this means that when the strings get loosened on her, she’ll probably be my favourite character, but she’ll be struggling to get even close to Rem’s level. The girl only wants to eat meat, that’s automatic brownie points right there!!!

THE GOOD

  • I like how side characters have actual roles, like Emile

THE BAD

  • Nothing really great happening
  • I don’t like Alicia that much

Episode Score: 3/5

Island (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Well that was dark and overly complicated, now wasn’t it? Sara’s entire set of hypotheses are not only wrong, but so far off the mark that you wonder how she even came to them in the first place. Sara isn’t a time traveler, in fact the longer this show goes, the more I’m positive we’re going to discover Setsuna is literally just a random guy who washed ashore one day and had dreams of a story he read at one point. But yeah, Sara’s past is dark as fuck, her family lied to parents about their babies being stillborn and left them to die just to keep up their “powers” to those around the island. Sweet Jesus that was horrifying. Either way, Sara’s arc is solved as her suicide attempt failed and we can move onto probably something more Rinne-related.

And yes, this explanation was complicated. Because the episode was extremely complicated.

THE GOOD

  • Hell of a dark backstory

THE BAD

  • Very complicated episode
  • More beach activities and Karen wasn’t there?!

Episode Score: 3/5

Overlord III (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Nothing special in this episode either, I’m actually really disappointed. Can’t even really say much, this was all just preparation for…something? He killed the giant, enslaved the snake and we still don’t know what will be attacking Carne Village. That’s really it, aside from Aura getting molested a little bit…

THE GOOD

  • Slight intrigue on who’s attacking Carne Village

THE BAD

  • Very uneventful
  • The giant and snake weren’t even interesting, like Hamusuke was

Episode Score: 2/5

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Once again, another really fun episode. Both Sagiri and Yaya skits this episode were fun and brought a little more out of each girl, Sagiri getting a little more feminine and Yaya being a little more open, not to mention continuing her sexy catgirl posing that she’s already mastered it seems. I would assume that would mean next week we’re getting stuff with Nonko and maybe even Nakai?

THE GOOD

  • Sagiri looks amazing when she dresses a little more girly
  • Sexy catgirl Yaya. I don’t even need to say anything else, do I?

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5 + 1 bonus point for boy butt in a harem anime
