[Quickie] 2018 Summer Anime Awards

I’m honestly not going to have time in the next little while to record a video for the anime awards like I normally do, as I’m in the midst of adjusting to a new work schedule and I’m trying my ass off to get myself a living space of my own so I can have the space (and the lack of other people around me) to record more stuff, maybe even stream as well.

Also, I’ve been lazy getting this up in the first place and I don’t think I have the time, nor the extra energy right now to do a long post for the awards, so I apologize for this being a rather lazy version of the awards this season, when I’m normally doing these on a much bigger scale, but I think at this point, if I don’t just post my winners, I won’t ever get around to it.

So here’s the list of all my usual awards and the winners from this summer season!

NOTE: There are a few spoilers contained in these awards.

2017 Spring Anime Awards

So the 2017 spring anime season is in the books. Either every show has ended or it’s continuing through into the summer season. Either way, a season has ended, a new one is about to begun or has already begun, depending on when you’re reading this, so it’s time to give awards to the best that the spring season had to offer.

This time around we’re going to do things slightly differently. Obviously last season I started to not do “Worst Of…” awards anymore, this time the format is going to change a little bit as well. Instead of just doing each category by having the nominees and then the winner, we’ll have a few smaller awards still retain that format, but for the more important awards, I’ll give a brief speech about why I nominated the very nominees for that award.

So with that being said, let’s get this show on the road!

Most WTF?! Inducing Show

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

Eromanga-sensei

Hinako Note

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine

Renai Boukun

Winner: Eromanga-sensei

In the end, while Hinako Note can get really random and Renai Boukun can get REAAAAAAALLY RANDOM, how can I give this award to any other show than the anime that has a girl who looks like she hasn’t hit puberty yet demanding that other girls around her age strip for her so she can draw lewd pictures of them? It’s impossible!

…Also there’s another girl who also looks like she’s not a teenager and she plays the piano naked in her house!!!

Best Screencap

— Death awaits to those who dare take Re=L’s strawberry tarts — Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

— My validation for all these years. It’s not just me… — Eromanga-sensei

— Marie channeling how I play JRPGs — Granblue Fantasy

— The anime girl version of me in a nutshell — Granblue Fantasy

— Failing to realize that a “close call” isn’t something an immortal being can say happens to them — Renai Boukun

Winner: Renai Boukun

Any one of these screencaps could’ve won, actually I’m surprised I went this route, I was sure I was going to pick Sagiri justifying her need to see cute girl’s panties, because it was such a ridiculous line, but I decided on this specific picture because that was the moment where I was dying laughing at the first episode of Renai Boukun and thus started my absolute love for that show (at least for the first few episodes before they tried to be somewhat serious). It really established the humour and lunacy the show would continue to have and I’ll never stop loving absolute anime lunacy!

Sexiest Screencap

— How a girl says hello to another girl in anime “language” — Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

— Muramasa making up for not being best girl, by being sexiest girl — Eromanga-sensei

— If you didn’t know any better, you’d think Lyria was naked and sexy time was starting — Granblue Fantasy

— Hinako can only hide her super secret sexy body for so long… — Hinako Note

— Belphegor showing off the best butt thus far in the spring season — Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai

Winner: Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai

It’s funny how I dropped this show so long ago and yet this picture is easily the best one I’ve seen and it’s so tame compared to the rest of Sin, though this picture is fantastic and it doesn’t have that shitty censorship blocking it! The other shows this season, while they had ecchi, the quality in the shows I watched just weren’t that great and in the end, the best butt in anime this season that I’ve seen, it’s an easy win. So congrats, Belphegor, for essentially doing nothing. Makes sense, that is her character.

Best Couple/Duo

Glenn/Sistine – Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

Elf/Masamune – Eromanga-sensei

Karva/Marie – Granblue Fantasy

Heine/Leonhard – Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine

Akane/Seiji – Renai Boukun

Winner: Eromanga-sensei

As much as I love Marie and Karva, in the end I had to give this award to Elf and Masamune’s pure and naturally developed relationship. I really don’t care what people think about shipping him with Sagiri, that relationship is clearly forced, it’s hard-written into the story because of course the show has to be about pseudo-incest. But Elf and Masamune, their relationship felt natural, almost accidental in a way. And for once, we actually saw a girl properly address her love to the main character, rather than hiding behind every conceivable thing possible, or through a tsundere kind of character. Both look like the truly enjoy each other’s company and their personalities clash so perfectly. They argue like a married couple, the talk to each other like a married couple, it’s impossible for me to think any other couple in anime this year beats them.

Sexiest Male Character

Gran – Granblue Fantasy

zaShunina – KADO: The Right Answer

Heine (Young) – Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine

Leonhard – Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine

Licht – Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine

Winner: zaShunina (KADO: The Right Answer)

He’s a bit weird, a bit too forthcoming and well…he’s crazy! But goddamn if there was any male in anime this season that generated a reaction from me, that alien in that tight bodysuit, he’s the one! I mean I’ll be honest, he would’ve had competition, but Leonhard wears a girl’s nightgown and it completely throws me off.

Sexiest Female Character

Celica – Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

Marie – Granblue Fantasy

Whoever This Girl Is – Granblue Fantasy

And Whoever This Girl Is Too – Granblue Fantasy

Belphegor – Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai

Winner: Marie (Granblue Fantasy)

Marie almost lost. I actually wrote some of this article ahead of time and in Episode 12, the blonde girl (who I later discovered is named Zeta) had her beat. Then Episode 13 aka the Swimsuit Episode came into existence and Marie got the #1 spot right back. It’s that great mix of sexiness combined with a colorful palette on top of an extremely eccentric and quirky character. And come on, that body in white/orange stripes, how could I not pick that?

Sexiest Female Character (in secret)

Sistine – Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

Muramasa – Eromanga-sensei

Hinako – Hinako Note

Akua – Renai Boukun

Maki – Sakura Quest

Winner: Muramasa (Eromanga-sensei)

Originally, this was Akua’s award, as you know me, I love the tomboys! But when we were introduced to Muramasa, I saw nothing in her whatsoever, had zero interest in her. Then the swimsuit episode came and I got everything from her. I should’ve known, of course the girl wearing a yukata all the time, she would have the largest breasts on the show, I was an idiot to not catch that. But yeah, Muramasa in that blue bikini alone really puts the context of this award fully in play. So Akua, it’s your fault for not wearing a bikini! This could’ve been yours!

Prettiest Female Character

Katalina – Granblue Fantasy

Saraka – KADO: The Right Answer

Ririko – Sakura Quest

Shiori – Sakura Quest

Yoshino – Sakura Quest

Winner: Saraka (KADO: The Right Answer)

I had no idea how strong Saraka was going to become as this show moved on. I was 99.9% positive that Katalina was going to win this award, because she is absolutely gorgeous. But then Saraka comes along with her angry blushy face, looking like a million bucks! It’s odd for me, because generally speaking when an anime girl is in business attire all the time, it’s hard for me to get really into them. Before we see Saraka in normal clothes, before she becomes *SPOILERS* (you know what I’m talking about if you watched the show), she was already an absolute beauty. So anything after that was just icing on the cake.

Best Voice

Re=L – Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

Vyrn – Granblue Fantasy

Siero – Granblue Fantasy

Hinako – Hinako Note

Elf – Eromanga-sensei

Winner: Siero (Granblue Fantasy)

This category got made specifically because of Siero. I’m sure there’s many people that listen to characters like Vyrn, Elf and Siero and hate them because some people don’t like the overly high-pitched cheesy voice. But I love it and the Queen of that type of voice this season was Siero, holy freaking hell it was Siero. I could not help but smile while listening to her voice. Congrats Emiri Katou, you nailed it!

Best OP

Eromanga-sensei – ClariS once again with “Hitorigoto” does a fantastic job with doing an OP for a romantic comedy harem anime. The song is a perfect blend of catchy and cute music, the tune is infectious and since first hearing the song it has not left my head.

Granblue Fantasy – BUMP OF CHICKEN have always been a solid artist when it comes to anime OP’s and this new tune in “GO” has done the same thing. They do such a fantastic job with being a softer, yet effectively intense melody, especially with the singer’s voice really emphasizing the chorus.

Hinako Note – If you’ve seen my usual winners for these awards (see Anne Happy and New Game!), you know I absolutely adore these kinds of songs that are overly bouncy and moe as all hell. The voice cast of the show do a great job with “A E I O U O Ao!”, getting you set for what will be a ridiculous over-the-top show.

KADO: The Right Answer – Mao Ichimichi, the voice of Saraka does the vocal track for “Tabiji”, the OP of this anime and it’s such a beautiful, serene track. In fact, it’s the one song that makes my spine tingle, with the melody that plays after the initial chanting. The beat is very strong as well, it’s not the best overall song out of them all, but it makes the most impact.

Renai Boukun – Wake Up, Girls much like Hinako Note, use a very bouncy, silly style of music to really get you set for the insanity that is Renai Boukun. “Koi? de Ai? de Boukun desu!” almost comes off like a classic 90’s comedy anime tune, it’s very simple and cheesy, it’s hard not to love.

Winner: Eromanga-sensei

Combining both the music and the animation together, Sagiri dancing in her mask is more than enough to win this award for her team. ClariS may just be my favourite artists that create music for anime, their songs are so catchy and impossible not to like. It’s almost an unfair advantage going in, when I knew they were doing the OP for this show, I was already hyped for how good the song would sound. And it doesn’t disappoint.

Best Art Direction

Granblue Fantasy – I initially didn’t like the visual style of this show, but after a couple episodes, it grew on me. The diverse visuals with each place the crew travels to, the battle animations, the vistas, the airships, there is so much the show does that looks fantastic in the style it runs with.

Hinako Note – When your show is all about cute girls doing cute things, you gotta employ a visual style that fits perfectly with that and the show very much does. There really isn’t a moment in the show where you aren’t bludgeoned over the head with the cuteness that the animators employ on the show.

KADO: The Right Answer – The background visuals with the giant cube alone make for an incredible art direction, the beauty of a modern Japan mixed with the unbelievable sci-fi fantasy visuals that zaShunina brings with him, it’s such a great mixture of gorgeous sights.

Renai Boukun – The cheeky, over-the-top visual style this show employs does nothing but add to just how funny the show is. Not every show needs to be gorgeous, it has to suit the tone it’s setting and the visuals for Renai Boukun absolutely fit with the insanity that this “romantic” comedy runs with.

Sakura Quest – While I did drop the show, there’s no doubting the striking visuals that the show has. When the show is set in a gorgeous village outside of the city, you’re getting a massive amount of gorgeous vistas, backgrounds, buildings, all that jazz. The animators did a great job creating a calm, beautiful village.

Winner: Renai Boukun

This award could’ve gone either way, with KADO being the more beautiful show. But in the end, I have to give the award to the show that accentuates itself the most with its animation style. Renai Boukun thrives because of the insane visuals it adds along with its writing and voice acting. Without the over-the-top visuals it employs, the show would be nowhere near as good, nowhere near as funny as it is.

Best Character Design

Eromanga-sensei – Chalk full of cuteness, Eromanga-sensei has a wide range of characters (that are young girls) that have an incredibly over-the-top accentuation of their respective personalities. Their designs add to this extremely effectively, for example with how everyone is adoring Sagiri because the show does such a fantastic job at making the cute little sister be just that.

Granblue Fantasy – A massive range of character designs, this show clearly runs away with the number of unique characters in terms of style, clothing, body type, everything to differentiate them and give the independence. And mixed with the fantastic art style the show has, it’s a match made in heaven.

Hinako Note – Being the king of facial expressions and reactions this season, the main cast, in particular Mayuki and Hinako really are allowed to let their personalities shine through the great attention to comedic timing and detail that the animators bring to their many escapades and situations.

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine – It’s a tough hill to climb being an all-boys show in order to get into this category, but Oushitsu through a great team manages to make five separate male characters be extremely unique in their style, posture, expressions, all that jazz. It’s quite amazing to me that they pulled this off not just once, but an entire season.

Renai Boukun – Much like the reasons they won the previous award, Renai Boukun has a fantastic attention to comedic detail with their facial expressions and character designs, by making each character seem quite quirky and in the case of Akane, Guri and especially Shikimi with her “heart eyes”, they end up standing out tremendously because of this.

Winner: Granblue Fantasy

In this case, I gave the award to the sheer scale of diverse characters that the show offers and I was giving the award to them before Episode 12 when we got barraged with amazing character after amazing character. There isn’t a single character that I can think of that didn’t grab my attention visually. While the expressions and reactions aren’t as incredible as other nominees, they make up for it in the beauty and coolness that each respective character employs, to varying degrees. There’s so many standout characters in this show.

Best Story

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor – The crazy idea of a lazy magical school instructor shouldn’t have offered any sort of intriguing story, but the show manages to scrape together a relatively interesting narrative (up until the end) with almost nothing, giving you reasons to be interested in certain characters.

Eromanga-sensei – A show about the potential relationship between step-siblings shouldn’t have offered any sort of story, yet in the second half of the show, it actually has an intriguing romantic narrative where you will actually have a horse in the race, whereas so many harem anime just haphazardly throw in several girls who might want the main character’s adoration. This show makes you believe every girl in the race legitimately loves him.

Granblue Fantasy – While the show spends almost every episode having a different mini-story going on, almost every episode was very interesting and well-written with a goal in mind and still keeping the main story move forward. There are flaws and there were moot points, but when the show was at its best, the story was a major part of why.

KADO: The Right Answer – The lone serious show with a story I managed to watch, KADO does something that few anime could ever hope to do, use its narrative to force me to ask questions in my own head. The intrigue I’ve had through the many questions about what we would do if an alien landed on Earth, it’s massive. The story along with these questions are so well-constructed, I was in a constant state of impatience waiting for the next episode.

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine – Another show that I never would’ve expected much of a narrative from and yet it shocked me with an incredibly well thought out narrative about four princes slowly maturing in hopes to become the next king one day. The show revolves around its comedy, but the serious tone on the side really accentuates the story that pushes forward as Heine continues to train the four princes on how to become essentially an adult.

Winner: KADO: The Right Answer

This was a no-brainer, while the other shows had decent stories, KADO blows them all away with its incredibly unique narrative and a constant barrage of introspective questions I’ve been asking myself through watching this show. Much like how ERASED got me constantly guessing, KADO has me constantly asking questions, but not in confusion, but in interest of furthering my knowledge and piquing my curiosity to a far distant future.

Best Comedy

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor – I knew the show would have its moments, I was not aware just how many it would have. Glenn is the shining star of this show through his over-the-top lazy, yet intelligent character. He’s much like Ikta from Alderamin, except he’s hilarious. The show’s crude humour and constant random hijinks really give the show a quirky side that it desperately needed, as it would’ve been a cringeworthy half-serious magical school anime otherwise.

Eromanga-sensei – It’s hard not to have good comedy in a harem anime, at least in my opinion. Eromanga makes the most of the moments it has in its comedic sections, while other nominees are more of a barrages of humour, this show bides its time and gets you comfortable before smacking you in the face with some hilarious jokes and situations, mostly due to Sagiri’s innate pervertedness.

Hinako Note – If you’ve seen this show at all, you know exactly why this show is on the list. There really isn’t a moment where the show isn’t trying to make you either laugh or smile. The animation style is specifically designed to elicit a reaction from the viewers and the cast of characters are so overly quirky, it’s impossible not to find something funny about them. Once they get going, the ride doesn’t stop until the credits roll.

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine – This show does such an incredible job at taking nothing and making it supremely funny, the facial reactions are on point, the constant insulting between everyone gets so good at times, there’s a never-ending supply of jokes and silly situations that the show employs to keep you smiling through the entire 20 minutes.

Renai Boukun – Pure insanity is the key with this show, as the show never stops trying to make you burst out laughing with all its craziness, whether it’s the characters, the story, the cliches, the parodying, there’s a constant barrage of humour thrusted at you to the point it’s impossible not to laugh at some point during each episode, no matter how shrewd you are.

Winner: Renai Boukun

Every nominee here deserves the award, if there’s any award this year that anyone could’ve won, this is it. I chose Renai Boukun however, because of its first episode. I truly mean it when I say I was in pain from laughing at the first episode of this show, it’s randomness and insanity was beyond anything I had expected for the show. It caught me so off-guard and I paid for it with my chest after laughing so hard. The show continues to uphold it’s hysterical comedic style the best out of any other show, I think though, so that adds to why I put this anime above the rest.

Best Ecchi

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor – While it calmed down a lot in the second half, Akashic certainly owns a high ranking for the most overly sexualized school uniforms in anime history. The show doesn’t hide the fact that yes, it’s a silly school anime that has a ton of pretty girls, you know they’ll be half-naked at some point and in a swimsuit at some point. And it’s glorious.

Eromanga-sensei – I mean come on, “ero” is in the freaking title! I know a lot of people will be thrown off, given the ages of the characters in this show, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that this show does not hide its ecchi at all. While there isn’t clear nudity anywhere remotely close to these girls, there’s a lot of suggestion and it’s unmistakably there.

Hinako Note – I’m still surprised just how much ecchi this show has. I thought it was going to be a strong moe show, I had no idea that it was going to be extremely sexual to the point it’s almost uncomfortable at times, because you’re not prepared for it in the same way you are with other shows, in particular harems. But with Hinako and especially Chiaki, ecchi is EXTREMELY strong with them.

Renai Boukun – Putting aside Guri-chan’s love for shipping random guys together in sexy, sexy boy love, the show is still a pseudo-harem romantic comedy, it’s impossible not to have ecchi in it. The game is strong as well, more in a cliche 90’s anime manner, with the over-the-top bouncing boobs with Akane and the extreme masochistic nature of Shikimi.

Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai – The show is essentially hentai, I mean come on, do I need to explain it any further? Breasts are grabbed constantly and clothes are repeatedly ripped off! I’ll spoil this one though and say that Sin has the best ecchi HOWEVER IT IS DISQUALIFIED FOR HAVING THE SHITTIEST CENSOR GRAPHICS I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!

Winner: Hinako Note

I cannot believe that this show won the award, it may have been the show I was least likely to give it when I had my list of shows to watch this season. I assumed it would be cute girls doing cute things, but holy shit with Hinako being far more “proportioned” than I thought and the endless barrage of Chiaki in some of the most sexually explicit poses I may ever seen in an anime that I wouldn’t consider a “one step from hentai” show, it’s hard to ignore the fact that this show is overflowing with ecchi.

Best Male Character

Glenn – Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor – The lone reason I kept any interest in this show after Episode 1 is strictly due to Glenn. His laziness, how downright hatred for the very subjects he teaches and just his overbearing self, it was so goddamn funny to watch and because of that overwhelming negativity surrounding him, he becomes one of the most likable characters this season.

Heine – Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine – For someone so short in stature (I imagine him puffing his cheeks right now), Heine is certainly not short in supply of comedic and entertainment value. He’s a dead serious character with a heart of gold and some of the best comedic timing I saw all season. How can I not love that?

Kai – Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine – The first of two princes to be nominated, Kai is the most random amalgamation of anime tropes and I love it. He’s got the cold glare, speaks softly and sparingly, looks like he could punch a whole in the Earth, yet is madly in love with anything soft. He is impossible not to love.

Leonhard – Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine – The second prince nominated, Leonhard plays his role as the lovable dunce cap so, so well. His overwhelming naivety helps him shine, as a lot of clueless anime characters tend to do, at least with me.

Seiji – Renai Boukun – In a show where absolute insanity is the name of the game, Seiji still manages to stand out as the lone straight man on the show. While everyone else is off their rocker, he works diligently to keep things on the ground before they get lost in the clouds. And because of this, he manages to bring the best out of all the crazy characters on the show.

Winner: Kai (Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine)

There was no doubt this season for me, Kai was just running away with this award from the moment his first solo episode came into play. The guy is such a random trope mixture, yet it works so perfectly, he easily became the character I rooted for the most and I actually do legitimately think he would be the best choice to be king out of the four.

Best Female Character

Re=L – Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor – In a show where a lot of its female cast is relatively boring, Re=L has all the opportunity to stand out and oh boy does she ever! She reminds me a lot of Akatsuki from Log Horizon, in that she’s super serious and unintentionally funny. Also, come on…she’s super cute!

Elf – Eromanga-sensei – When you have to deal with the never-ending supply of pseudo-incest, how the hell can you compete as another female character vying for the main character’s attention? You have a unique design and you become one of the most honest, almost lifelike characters I’ve seen in anime in quite some time. Yes, she plays the piano naked at home, but you tell me after watching her confess to Masamune that she’s not a strong female character. She actually has the guts to say something to him and not just dance around it and try to make the MC realize her feelings!

Siero – Granblue Fantasy – For the same reasons she won the Best Voice award, Siero’s undeniably adorable look and voice makes her an unique presence on the show. There’s never a moment when I see her that I don’t smile uncontrollably, she really adds a cute flare to the show that’s already a pretty good show.

Kanata – KADO: The Right Answer – Sweet baby Jesus this girl! An unprecedented level of hyperactive behaviour in what acts like a super serious show, Kanata sticks out like a sore thumb that’s swollen to unhealthy proportions. It’s impossible not to notice her when she’s on-screen and whenever she’s on-screen, you’re never not smiling.

Guri – Renai Boukun – Take away her Demon form in the late game of the show and you have an extremely eccentric, hilarious character in Guri-chan. Her cluelessness to love and adamant desire to ship EVERYONE makes the show an entertaining experience and she truly is the leader of the insanity, which makes the show so great.

Winner: Elf (Eromanga-sensei)

I can’t give this award to anyone else, as much as I love Re=L, Kanata, Siero and Guri. Elf is a character who over the course of this season had me gradually falling in love with her in the same way that she slowly fell in love with Masamune. Underneath that lazy, silly personality she shows the majority of the time, there is an absolutely beautiful woman underneath that once she gets older, she will be an unmistakably beautiful personality. So spoiler alert, if she pops up on ‘Waifu, FWB or One-Night Stand?’, she’s going in the Waifu tier. There’s no doubt about it.

Best Show

Eromanga-sensei – A show that had a rough start, by the second half of the season, I really started to get on the side of this show. The humour got better, the story got better, the characters got better and we added a little more in Muramasa to round out the harem. Also come on, I’m biased to Oreimo cameos as well. But the show itself was a fantastic romantic comedy, one that I looked forward to the most as we headed to the end of the season.

Granblue Fantasy – In all honesty, I think this was the most consistent show of them all. Each episode, while some were certainly far better than others, none of them really had anything terrible that made me really dislike the episode a lot. The cool vibes I got from a show that revolves around an airship crew travelling from place to place and getting into some crazy situation each time, it was a nice watch that didn’t demand too much of my attention.

Hinako Note – Speaking of shows that didn’t demand to much of my attention, the simplicity of this show really helped it out. Sometimes you don’t need a great concept to make a good show, all you need is a fun premise and a fun vibe to the show. Much like Granblue, Hinako Note was very consistent, though there unlike the aforementioned Granblue, this show didn’t have that runaway episode that really blew me away. But this show kept the 3s and 3.5s absolutely solid with its great humour and unbelievably “Awww!” inducing moe.

KADO: The Right Answer – KADO is a show that did something different than most anime. It made me question things, it made me think about things, it made me write articles completely unrelated to anime. The show took a really interesting concept and didn’t fuck around with it, the show actually commits to it and does a fantastic job at bringing unique and thought-provoking questions out from it. I would normally expect an anime to half-ass around such a concept, this show commits to it!

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine – This show was the one show that my girlfriend got really into watching, so it ended up being our show to watch together, which isn’t a rare thing, she loves watching random anime bullshit with me, but it’s rare for her to demand I wait for her to watch a specific show. I don’t blame her, this show was fantastic, for an all-male show, I was enamored by how cleverly written and funny this show actually was. I fully expected it to be meh at best and it was actually one of the most entertaining shows of the season with a great cast of characters.

Winner: KADO: The Right Answer

I finished with seven shows, the lowest number I’ve ever finished with (mostly due to Amazon and Anime Strike…), so I worried that I was not going to find a diamond this season. I never expected that the diamond would be a show that seemed like a show that would’ve just been an anime with an interesting concept, but never fleshes it out. Instead, KADO grabs me from the very start, getting me intrigued like I expected it to do, but it didn’t stop, it never stopped. As more technology came into the world via zaShunina, I began to ask more and more questions about how that would work in our current society, how humanity would react to such a scenario. All these amazing questions started coming out, hell it started a new freaking series of articles I’ve started (What If?), no other anime has done this!

So out of all the shows, it’s no surprise that this is the one I picked. There were some really good shows I stuck with, but when an anime goes beyond just a television program to me, it’s hard to ignore it. KADO made me think, made me ask questions and deliberate the answers to them. When an anime makes you think about the future of humanity and society as a whole, goddamn it must be a really good show!

Addendum: When I wrote this, it was before watching Episode 12 of the show. I had it completely in mind that there was no way the show would lose itself in the last episode, so I stuck with it. After Episode 12, the show still wins on its merit of being such a thought-provoking, interesting anime, however it’s lack of a good ending and in my opinion, an extremely bad ending, the show has lost a ton of luster.

So for shits and giggles, if you want a runner-up that arguably stands next to Kado now, I would go with Eromanga-sensei in that spot. It’s a supremely funny show with enough ridiculousness and ecchi that if you’re into that sort of thing like I am, you’ll definitely enjoy it.

And there we are, there’s my best of this season awards! Hope you enjoyed them, don’t forget to leave your own winners in the comments below! See you in the summer!

Winter Anime 2017 Awards

So the fall anime season has ended (or at least every show has had their 12-13 episodes), so an awards show is in order! These awards will be for both the good and the bad of this season’s anime, nothing I watched this season gets a free pass!

There’s one change this year. The ‘Worst Show’ category will now be renamed the ‘Worst Show I Finished’. I feel it’s unfair to give a ‘Worst Show’ award to a show I watch one episode of.

Worst OP

“Jitensha ni Hana wa Mau” by AOP – Minami Kamakura High School Girls Cycling Club

Winner: Minami Kamakura High School Girls Cycling Club

This is literally the only OP of everything I watched that I didn’t like, that’s just how damn good the music was this season for me. This song isn’t even that terrible, but it’s just very plain, as the show very much is as well.

Worst Story

Fuuka

Masamune-kun no Revenge

Youjo Senki

Winner: Masamune-kun no Revenge

The plot of this show was the main reason I got intrigued. A fat kid after being left heartbroken by a bitch of a girl loses all the weight and becomes essentially the hottest guy in school. He aims to seduce this same girl so he can get his revenge and break her heart. There could have been so many interesting twists and turns and a good ending to it, but instead the show is mostly filler, the twists they try to throw in don’t really offer anything to the story and then on top of that, the ending is nothing. It’s hoping for a second season that I don’t plan on watching even if it gets the green light.

Biggest Disappointment

Fuuka

Masamune-kun no Revenge

Youjo Senki

Winner: Masamune-kun no Revenge

As I just mentioned earlier, this show really had my interest and it really didn’t do anything to affirm that interest I had. The show wasn’t terrible to the point of dropping it, like I did with so many other shows, but it just didn’t offer what was I hoping for. I wasn’t all that engaged, I wasn’t laughing along with a lot of the humour, hell I don’t even have a “best girl” in that show. The show didn’t deliver.

Best Start, Shit Finish

Fuuka

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Youjo Senki

Winner: Fuuka

This show at one point during the season was in my Top 3. It was kicking all kinds of musical ass, had a really interesting love triangle starting to form and looked absolutely gorgeous. Then in the second half, the show played the same song over and over again and the love triangle turned into the most childish, frustrating storyline I have watched in a while in terms of an anime I actually finished. I was so into this show and the central character that I had fallen in love with basically pissed all that good will away by Episode 10.

Worst Male Character

Masamune Makabe – Masamune-kun no Revenge

Jyugo – Nanbaka

Winner: Jyugo

These were the only two I was cross with at any point this season, which is surprising because I usually list every male character as a bad character. In this case, a lot of it has to do with Jyugo being a bad character since the very beginning, he’s very one-dimensional and a frustration to watch, he’s basically walking self-doubt and it gets super annoying after a while. And when this second season took a light break from the comedy for a more story-driven, battle heavy season, his bullshit really came into the light this season especially.

Worst Female Character

Fuuka Akitsuki – Fuuka

Raphiel Shiraha – Gabriel Dropout

Quetzalcoatl – Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Viktoriya Serebryakova – Youjo Senki

Winner: Quetzalcoatl

Fuuka got really annoying towards the end, Raphiel is a giant pain in the ass, Viktoriya basically is a useless “main character”, but Quetzalcoatl is literally a one-purpose character for one joke that gets tossed around over and over and over again. While I don’t mind that kind of comedy, when every other character in that show was fantastic, a lifeless character really stands out. Hell, she’s a big breasted character and she still doesn’t even look that good! It’s anime! How is that even possible?!

Worst Show I Finished

Fuuka

Masamune-kun no Revenge

Youjo Senki

Winner: Masamune-kun no Revenge

Given the awards already, this seems pretty obvious. The show had such an interesting concept and did nothing with it and the entire season there really wasn’t a standout episode that really pushed it to the forefront. The show just did enough to not be terrible and while Fuuka really frustrated me towards the end and Youjo Senki really didn’t hold the awesome start it had, Masamune just never came to be anything the entire way through.

Best OP

“Shadow and Truth” by ONE III NOTES – ACCA 13-ku Kansatsu-ka

“Ikken Rakuchaku Goyoujin” by Earphones – Akiba’s Trip: The Animation

“Original” by TrySail – Demi-chan wa Kataritai

“Climber’s High” by Manami Numakura – Fuuka

“Aozora no Rhapsody” by fhána – Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Winner: Demi-chan wa Kataritai

This award would’ve gone to Fuuka, but because it got overplayed so much during the show, I couldn’t take it anymore. My second choice then is Demi-chan and not even because it’s the second best song. The animation that plays during the OP is so cute and looks so perfect for what the show is. It’s one of two OPs that I watched every episode, Kobayashi being the other and thus the runner-up.

Best Art Direction

Akiba’s Trip: The Animation

Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Fuuka

Nanbaka

Youjo Senki

Winner: Fuuka

Despite my harsh feelings against the last three episodes of the show, Fuuka overall looked absolutely gorgeous. The character detail was solid and any anime that has people playing music on stage and I actually think they’re playing the exact notes and beats of the song, mad props to that!

Best Character Design

Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Fuuka

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Nanbaka

Winner: Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

For Kanna alone, Kobayashi wins. But the variation in characters, of course the dragons specifically, they really added a ton of life to the already joyful show. And yes this even includes this season’s worst character, but let’s be honest, Fafnir, Tohru and Kanna are the real standouts here.

Best Story

Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Fuuka

Masamune-kun no Revenge

Nanbaka

Youjo Senki

Winner: Demi-chan wa Kataritai

For the shows I watched this season, there really weren’t any solid stories all the way through. But what Demi-chan did aside from the other four is that it stuck to its narrative and didn’t suddenly adjust to evoke emotion in you, because you’re supposed to feel emotional. Every episode contributed more to the same story, a human trying to learn more about demi-humans. That was it and the show stuck to it and stayed on track and by doing so, offered a real interesting story, not to mention some real life applications with racism and sexism that aren’t revolving around people yelling online.

Funniest Show

Akiba’s Trip: The Animation

Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Gabriel Dropout

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Winner: Gabriel Dropout

Satania and her melon bread alone really brings the humour, but the show in its entirety doesn’t slack off. Gabriel is a fantastic main character that would make Umaru proud, Vignette’s struggles of being the nicest demon ever is fantastic and even Raphiel gets some shit eventually with her peeping maid. There’s so much to talk about in terms of humour with this show, there’s no doubt in my mind that if you’re looking for a show to just kick back and laugh your ass off, this is the one this season you should be going to.

Most WTF?! Inducing Show

Akiba’s Trip: The Animation

Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Gabriel Dropout

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Nanbaka

Winner: Akiba’s Trip: The Animation

For nearly getting dropped and then coming out with an episode that makes fun and references some of the most random professional wrestling references and then following that the next episode by shitting all over card game anime, that alone generates a lot of fun levels of “WTF?!”. Then there’s of course the Street Fighter episode and then the majority of the show when it comes to the random stripping. Show is chalk full of WTF?! moments.

Best Ecchi

Akiba’s Trip: The Animation

Fuuka

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Masamune-kun no Revenge

Winner: Fuuka

Honestly, I don’t even count Fuuka (who is gorgeous) and Koyuki (who’s cute) in this equation. Literally the couple of times Hibiki, Yuu’s older sister is either naked or damn near close and then the shower scene with Sara, those two girls completely pushed the needle all the way up and then broke the meter. Akiba’s Trip came close by quantity, but in the end Fuuka wins by sheer quality of work.

Best Screencap

01

— Something so dangerous, yet so adorable and funny looking — Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

01

— A callback to one of my favourite episodes from the first season — Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

— The best/worst mother you could ever have — Masamune-kun no Revenge

01

— Yes, pat me! — Nanbaka

01

— The single scariest screencap of a child I may ever take in an anime — Youjo Senki

Winner: Youjo Senki

When the face Tanya has is so damn creepy and funny and awesome all at the same time, it becomes my Twitter avatar and I’ve been wanting to change it for weeks now, but I can’t get myself to change it because it’s such a good picture…yeah, that’s more than enough to get this award in my eyes. I only wish Tanya was like this the entire season rather than really that one episode.

Sexiest Screencap

— Matome showing off the best butt in anime this season! — Akiba’s Trip: The Animation

01

— Usually it’s a male vampire enjoying a lovely lady, but no complaints from me here! — Demi-chan wa Kataritai

— Sara showing off the second-best butt in anime this season! — Fuuka

01

— Sometimes a swimsuit gets matched so perfectly to a girl AND is still sexy as fuck! — Fuuka

01

— Why I’m glad I have no sisters, let alone attractive ones — Fuuka

Winner: Fuuka (Hibiki in her underwear on the couch)

As I said in the ‘Best Ecchi’ award, Hibiki really set the tone for gorgeous anime girls this season. With this shot alone, she did something that rarely happens with me: I got really interested in an anime girl that was older than the average anime girl. Her topless out of the shower shot was pretty good too, but this shot really takes the cake.

Best Couple/Duo

Hikari/Himari – Demi-chanwa Kataritai

Hikari/Tetsuo – Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Kyouko/Tetsuo – Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Kobayashi/Tohru – Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Honey/Trois – Nanbaka

Winner: Hikari/Tetsuo

This is mostly due to Hikari just owning every time she’s on camera, but she really does shine the best when she’s alone with Tetsuo. She has her moments with the girls, but with him, she opens up and on top of that as at her goofiest, which is her strong point and then some. When those two were together, I was always smiling as wide as possible without hurting myself, they’re that good together.

Sexiest Female Character

Sakie Satou – Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Fuuka Akitsuki – Fuuka

Hibiki Haruna – Fuuka

Sara Iwami – Fuuka

Darkness – Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Winner: Hibiki Haruna

For being one of very few “older” women in anime to grab my full attention, this was a no brainer. Sara tried really hard towards the end with her shower scene, but in the end I have to give props to a character that manages to do something few ever do. This season was a lot lighter on ecchi than I thought it would’ve been, but especially in Hibiki’s case, she made the moments she got really count! Holy hell!

Sexiest Female Character (in secret)

Matome Mayonaka – Akiba’s Trip: The Animation

Kyouko Machi – Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Megumin – Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Tae Futaba – Masamune-kun no Revenge

Yoshino Koiwai – Masamune-kun no Revenge

Winner: Tae Futaba

For being a character that literally has fuck all to do with the show and is as much of a side character as one can be, Tae stands out anyway and in a show where there are two girls you’re supposed to focus on AND a tiny girl with giant boobs, Tae still ends up being the hottest girl on the show, in my opinion. She won the swimsuit episode without any contest and I only wish she got a lot more attention in th show because she deserved it.

Prettiest Female Character

Kyouko Machi – Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Fuuka Akitsuki – Fuuka

Megumin – Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Aki Adagaki – Masamune-kun no Revenge

Tae Futaba- Masamune-kun no Revenge

Winner: Megumin

Come on, how is Megumin not the prettiest girl?! Maybe it’s just me and my major bias with her, but man is she such a pretty girl. While Darkness is hot and Aqua is glamorous, Megumin sets the tone for being cute while retaining a hidden beauty. Least that’s in my eyes, I’m sure most people would pick Fuuka from my list without hesitation. Bah! You just don’t see it!

Best Male Character

Tetsuo Takahashi – Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Yuu Haruna – Fuuka

Kazuma Satou – Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Hajime Sugoroku – Nanbaka

Fafnir – Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Winner: Kazuma Satou

There’s some real good in here, but Kazuma really turned things up a notch this second season of Konosuba. He was even more deplorable, gave less fucks and was crazier than he’s ever been. And for a show like Konosuba, it couldn’t have been better.

Best Female Character

Hikari TakanashiDemi-chan wa Kataritai Kanna Kamui – Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Kanna Kamui – Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon Kanna Kamui – Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Tanya DegurechaffYoujo Senki

Winner: Kanna Kamui

This isn’t even a question, I would love to hear from anyone who watched anime this season AND watched Kobayashi to tell me why the character they picked as the best female character of the entire season is better than Kanna! Every single moment this adorable girl was on-screen, I was done, I couldn’t stop smiling and wanting to give her the biggest hug ever! She stole the show every single time she appears, I’m honestly picking her to win this award at the end of the year as well. I’d love to see someone try to beat her.

Best Show

Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Gabriel Dropout

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Nanbaka

Winner: Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Out of all the shows I watched this season, without a shadow of a doubt the show that stayed consistently good was Demi-chan. Every other show had a lull moment, or its consistency wasn’t as high as Demi-chan kept. That was the show I was excited the most to watch after Week 1 and it pretty much stayed that way all the way through. Others rose and dropped, but Demi-chan always stayed at or near the top. It’s a show that doesn’t demand too much from you and yet entertains you almost as much as an over-the-top show like Konosuba or Gabriel. It’s such a good show and I hope that it’ll find a way to bring a second season, though I suspect this was a one and done.

And there we are, there’s my best of this season awards! Hope you enjoyed them, don’t forget to leave your own winners in the comments below! See you in the spring!

Summer 2016 Anime Awards

So the summer anime season has ended (or at least every show has had their 12 episodes), so an awards show is in order! These awards will be for both the good and the bad of this season’s anime, nothing I watched this season gets a free pass!

Worst OP

“Signal” by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure – 91 Days

“miele paradiso” by Iori Nomizu – Masou Gakuen HxH

“99” by MOB CHOIR – Mob Psycho 100

“Tomodachi Meter” by The Super Ball – The Morose Mononokean

“Ao to Kurenai no Forzato” by Tatsuhisa Suzuki & Takuto Kirisawa – Scared Rider Xechs

Winner: 91 Days

Holy crap I cannot stand the vocals in this song! It sounds like a guy who is really shy when it comes to singing and has a sore throat so he’s trying not to use his vocal chords as much as possible. The actual music isn’t too bad, but man are the vocals horrendous. Out of any OP this season, this is the one that I cannot sit through the full minute and a half of.

Worst Story

The Morose Mononokean

Rewrite

Servamp

Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara

Taboo Tattoo

Winner: Taboo Tattoo

The “story” of this show spends the entirety of the series making zero sense. While some might watch Taboo Tattoo and think it’s just another random-filled anime, but by especially the second half of the show, it’s all nonsensical bullshit and not just entertaining bullshit. The ending is also absolutely atrocious, you wanna talk about anti-climatic, you wanna talk about boring and dull, this show takes the cake on that and its shitty store is large in part due to why.

Winner: Rewrite

This show from the very beginning had my attention. I like the diverse range of characters, I really like Lucia and Shizuru, just to name a few. Then the mid-series turn came and I lost all attention to this show. By suddenly removing its comedic and light-hearted nature, the show went completely dull and boring and I had zero reason to keep watching. At its highest point, this show was #4 on my list during the season and in one fell swoop, I dropped it completely.

Best Start, Shit Finish

Handa-Kun

Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!

Momokuri

The Morose Mononokean

Taboo Tattoo

Winner: Taboo Tattoo

Rewrite would’ve won this award, but of course I didn’t finish it. Not that Taboo Tattoo is far off from being as terrible though. Like I said earlier in the Worst Story award, this show’s ending is horrendous. After all the time spent with the characters, after all the ridiculousness, all the “emotion”, all the fun the show had, especially in the first half of the season, the show’s ending is one of the most dumb, boring, anti-climatic endings I have ever watched for an anime series. Not to mention it’s sequel-bait as well. It won’t have me back next season, that’s for sure.

Worst Male Character

Matthew Tetojirichi – Alderamin on the Sky

Kanade Takahashi – Hatsukoi Monster

President – Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!

Ichiya Suzaku – Qualidea Code

Subaru Mimasaka – Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara

Winner: Matthew Tetojirichi – Alderamin on the Sky

None of the characters on this list are particularly bad, not like Hiiragi (Bubuki Buranki) levels of bad, these guys are all just either meh or forgettable. And no one fits that better than Alderamin’s Matthew. The show could’ve easily just had four survivors instead of six and push him and Haroma out and just leave Ikta, Yatori, Torway and Chamille. Because throughout the entire season, Matthew either isn’t around or is really just there to say two lines and then disappear for the rest of the episode. For a guy who was looking like a main character, he sure as shit offers absolutely nothing to the show.

Worst Female Character

Colette – Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!

Nene Sakura – New Game!

Canaria Utara – Qualidea Code

Akane Senri – Rewrite

Touko Ichinose – Taboo Tattoo

Winner: Colette – Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!

Oh my god I hate Colette! In the second last episode where she trips and falls, I laughed my ass off, so happy to watch her dumbass fall to the ground. She offers nothing but stupidity to the show and while some might find that goofball personality of hers funny and entertaining, for me it offered nothing but “Ugh, get off my screen!” level of feelings while watching her on the show. She really doesn’t offer anything other than trouble and it’s not like there’s anything like a villain in the show. So she’s just a nuisance, nothing more.

Worst Show

Hatsukoi Monster

Masou Gakuen HxH

Orange

Scared Rider Xechs

Servamp

Winner: Masou Gakuen HxH

Like the ecchi-only shows like Queen’s Blade and Highschool DxD before it, Masou Gakuen HxH is a show that is literally just an exchange of sexy screencaps and animations to post on Gelbooru or Tumblr. That might sound like something for me, given my content, but like I’ve said before, while I enjoy anime that has no problem featuring a ton of ecchi, I still like having a decent story, or decent characters, or it’s really funny, or the concept is really interesting, things like that. Masou Gakuen HxH is literally “girls fight things, guy sexually assaults them to recharge their powers” and nothing more. It’s not funny, it’s not interesting, no one’s interesting, there’s nothing there but jiggling tits and a guy squeezing them. If I wanted to watch hentai, I would just watch hentai, not a show trying so hard to be hentai without being hentai.

Best OP

“The LiBERTY” by Fo’xTails – Handa-Kun

“STARTING NOW!” by Nana Mizuki – Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!

“SAKURA Skip” by fourfolium (main voice cast) – New Game!

“Deal with” by OLDCODEX – Servamp

“Kaze no Uta” by FLOW – Tales of Zestiria The X

Winner: Tales of Zestiria The X

This was such a hard decision to make. New Game’s OP is so cute and entertaining, Servamp (while the show sucked) has such a badass metal song, so does Handa-kun, Fo’xtails returning for another award year and Konobi has a really catchy track as well. But the only song out of these five that not only give me goosebumps hearing, but still does give me goosebumps hearing, is Tales of Zestiria’s OP track, “Kaze no Uta”. That brief guitar intro is a cool lead in, the string section kicking in with the bagpipe or whatever that instrument is before the vocals kick in is a fantastic hit to the ears. And the acoustic guitar during the actual verse is a really nice riff, I love every second of that song.

There’s no competition here, holy shit the animation in Tales of Zestiria The X is incredible! I had no idea that Ufotable did shows before that, but after learning they did the more recent Fate/Stay Night anime, it makes sense where their animation track record lies. I’ve never watched an anime and been more amazed by the visuals of the show. It’s not even close to anything I’ve seen this year, let alone years before. And I’m not sure anything not by Ufotable will come close to this. It’s that damn good.

Despite how terrible the show became, the diverse cast of characters still looked very good and very interesting. Putting aside more normal looking characters like Justice, Bluesy and Touko, take girls like Iltutmish, Aryabhata, Lisa, Kar and others, not to mention guys like B.B. and that dude who became an insect (no idea what his name was). There were so many characters designed with unique looks, unique expressions, unique outfits, not to mention their powers. Every character except for the Void Makers, they all had something different to offer.

Tales of Zestiria The X

Winner: Planetarian

There really weren’t that many shows this season that I’d consider having a really good story. But in the case of the 5-episode short, Planetarian, that was a fantastic and heartbreaking story. In the beginning it was a little silly, but by Episode 3 I was all the way in and by the end I was all emotional. For a show to do that in five episodes, rather than the usual 12, that’s incredible.

There were a lot of really cheesy, funny shows this season, but none of them really had me laughing as much as New Game did. Whether it’s Umiko shooting Kou constantly with her BB gun for being a smartass, Aoba’s innate fear of not wearing pants, or anything Hifumi does, the show offers a ton of comedic moments through the series and made the show a perfect trio of adorable, sexy and funny.

Taboo Tattoo

Winner: Taboo Tattoo

As tempted I was to give Ange Vierge the award based on Episode 1 having over half of the show devoted to an endless number of girls bathing together, Taboo Tattoo for an entire season kept up the sexual content, even in its darkest moments. Someone just died, ah well, the villain will send a video of them capturing one of the good guys while having a beach party. How does the villain get a new lackey? By walking up to a homeless girl, kissing her and grabbing her ass. Speaking of butts, there’s a ton of them in this show and they don’t half-ass (pun intended) them, whether it’s Bluesy, Touko, Aryabhata, Kar (especially Kar!), Iltutmish, Lisa and many more. The show knows what it wants to be, at least in terms of its ecchi content. I wish it had that devotion for the rest of the show as well.

Winner: Slumber Party, Taboo Tattoo

You’re trying to infiltrate the secret laboratory of an evil villainess who seeks to essentially restart the entire world. You gotta be expecting a massive maze of traps, automated defenses, guards and many other things that could potentially kill you, right? Nope! In Taboo Tattoo, there’s pretty much no one guarding the place except for one tough customer, after that it’s a giant slumber party with the villain and all her cloned sister, playing video games and other fun things in their underwear. That’s fucking hysterical!

Winner: Kou/Rin – New Game!

What a hilarious and super sexy looking moment. After spending the night at work, Rin wakes up to seeing her best friend and co-worker Kou in her usual state, asleep and with her pants off. After being teased that she should try doing the same as well the night before, Rin decides to give it a shot and actually enjoys it, only for Kou to wake up just in time to see it and tease her some more. But if that wasn’t enough, Aoba shows up to work and of course instead of returning to her sleeping bag where she could put her pants back on without anyone seeing her, she tries to keep Kou from spilling the beans, which ends up having Aoba walk in on them looking like something super sexy and scandalous was about to go on. And cue the doujins.

Best Couple/Duo

Futaba/Hikari – Amanchu!

Hikari/Mato – Amanchu!

Shinya/Yuki – Momokuri

Kou/Rin – New Game!

Aoba/Kou – New Game!

Winner: Kou/Rin – New Game!

Putting aside their sexual escapades at work, Kou and Rin are easily the most genuine and entertaining pairings this season. While it’s hinted at here and there that maybe there’s something more going on between the two, or at the very least about to go on, whenever these two are together, especially alone together, they look like the best of friends and it’s not forced, it comes off very natural.

Sexiest Female Character

Ai – Amanchu!

Kou – New Game!

Aryabhata – Taboo Tattoo

Bluesy – Taboo Tattoo

Kar – Taboo Tattoo

Winner: Kar – Taboo Tattoo

Wow this was a tough one to call, just getting five on the list was a hard enough decision. But in the end, I’m going with Kar from Taboo Tattoo on this one, mostly because she’s badass and sexy, not just sexy. Ai and Kou are just super hot, Bluesy’s a little more cute than sexy and Aryabhata while she’s very sexual and devious, she’s just not as cool looking while still being super sexy as Kar is. Want her just looking super hot? There’s the section where BB walks in on her changing (my oh my, what a butt she has!). Want her looking badass and sexy? There’s the battle scene towards the end with her and Justice (again, what a butt!). Any time she’s on screen, she makes the most of it and then some!

Sexiest Female Character (in secret)

Mizuki – Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!

Aoba – New Game!

Hifumi – New Game!

Rin – New Game!

Alisha – Tales of Zestiria The X

Winner: Rin – New Game!

It was pretty much a guarantee that a New Game character was going to take this award, it was just a matter of who. In the end, I’m going with Rin, because aside from the one time we see her pantsless with Kou, the rest of the anime she’s spent looking proper and elegant. So by getting one good moment with her and seeing that perfect butt of hers while trying to shut Kou up before Aoba finds them, there is no better example of a girl being secretly super sexy, than Rin.

Prettiest Female Character

Mizuki – Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!

Hifumi – New Game!

Rin – New Game!

Asuha – Qualidea Code

Alisha – Tales of Zestiria The X

Winner: Alisha – Tales of Zestiria The X

This was a no doubter. As much as I’d love to give this to Hifumi, there’s no one who I was more attracted to by her beauty (rather than sexiness) than Alisha from Tales of Zestiria The X. In particular, I prefer her the best when her white/pink garb is off and it’s just her shirt, shorts and thigh-highs. She looks absolutely stunning in that outfit, but not sexy in terms of wanting to see more (aka what’s underneath), but in terms of just looking so pretty you want to stand in front of her and embrace her. Unlike a girl like say Kar, who I would love nothing more than to have a hell of a long night with, Alisha is the kind of girl I just want to hold close to me.

Best Male Character

Ikta – Alderamin on the Sky

Handa-Kun – Handa-Kun

Shinya – Momokuri

Soma – Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara

BB – Taboo Tattoo

Winner: Ikta – Alderamin on the Sky

Ikta’s the easy pick here, because unlike the majority of male characters, he’s not a total dunce cap. While yes, he’s a bit of a womanizer, a flirt, whatever you may call him, he’s easily the most intelligent character on the show, maybe even in all the anime I’ve watched this season. He’s a tactical genius and uses his knowledge and brilliant strategic mind to use all the time. It’s not like your usual anime character who just happens to have some hidden power that helps him in the end, Ikta constantly plans ahead of time and they show that, not to mention that he doesn’t win every time, sometimes his plans go to shit and he has to go back to the drawing board. Also, the guy cut his damn finger off to apologize to the leader of a tribe after they slaughtered over half their people. Props to the guy!

Best Female Character

Hikari – Amanchu!

Kasumi – Handa-Kun

Hifumi – New Game!

Kou – New Game!

Tsumugi – Sweetness & Lightning

Winner: Hifumi – New Game!

Was there any doubt? As much as I’d love to give it to Hikari for being such a ball of happiness, to Kasumi for being the anime reincarnation of Fire Emblem’s Tharja, to Tsumugi for being Chinatsu 2.0 and to Kou for well…not wanting to wear pants, Hifumi is the easy pick here, without question. She’s so goddamn funny, so goddamn adorable, hell she tries to pay the main character off for seeing her smile! Every time Hifumi was on screen, I couldn’t help but smile. In fact, if I wanted to, I could’ve made a separate screencap award specifically for her! There’s so many good ones! But yeah, best girl without a doubt is New Game’s Hifumi.

Best Show

Alderamin on the Sky

Amanchu!

New Game!

Sweetness & Lightning

Tales of Zestiria The X

Winner: New Game!

And in the end, the best show of this summer season for me is New Game! All five of these shows were fantastic, take nothing away from them. But the only show that I truly waited week after week for was New Game, no other show was I counting down the days until the next episode. New Game was a perfect mixture for me, the show concept is ridiculous, an all-girl game development company and they’re all younger than 25, the show is super funny at times, the cast of characters are diverse both in looks and personality, and because I’m a sucker for it, there’s a surprisingly good amount of tasteful ecchi. It’s not overly bouncing breasts or anything like that, it’s just attractive young girls either in their underwear, or naked in the bath where you can’t see below the top of their chest. Everything I want in an anime is right here in New Game.

And there you have it, that’s my best of the summer anime season of 2016. If you’ve got your own winners for the season, don’t hesitate to leave them in the comments below!

Spring 2016 Anime Awards

So the spring anime season has ended (or at least every show has had their 12 episodes), so an awards show is in order! These awards will be for both the good and the bad of this season’s anime, nothing I watched this season gets a free pass!

Worst Opening Theme

“Gyakuten Winner” by Johnny’s West – Ace Attorney

“Limit” by LUNA SEA – Endride

“Datte, Gyutteshite.” by Maki Hanatani – Kumamiko ~Girl Meets Bear~

“The Day” by Porno Graffitti – My Hero Academia

“Okaeri.” by Yuusuke Yata – Super Lovers

Winner: Endride

The lead vocals of this sound are excruciatingly annoying to me, oh my god! The music itself isn’t terrible, but holy shit those vocals did not resonate with my musician’s ear at all! Ugh!

Worst Ending Theme

“Message” by Rei Yasuda – Ace Attorney

“Kobore Sekai Oware” by Aki Hata – Big Order

“go my way” by Ryouta Fujimaki – Endride

“HEROES” by Brian the Sun – My Hero Academia

“Happiness YOU & ME” by Various Actors (main cast) – Super Lovers

Winner: Ace Attorney

Same kind of deal with the worst opening, the vocals in this song really didn’t go over well with me, the shaky female vocals did not work well at all in my opinion. Again, music itself isn’t terrible, but the vocals really bring the song down.

Worst Story

Big Order

Cerberus

Endride

Haifuri

Super Lovers

Winner: Super Lovers

The sheer amount of jumping around from place to place in the episodes I managed to stick around long enough to watch are enough to drive me mad. But the idea that nothing in terms of plot is established quickly enough to bring you in, it just brings the show down a ton. After a great first episode with a ton of story with curious at best characters, they decided to do the same thing every week with no real change. And you can’t do that without boring the everloving shit out of your audience.

Biggest Disappointment

Big Order

Cerberus

Endride

Haifuri

Super Lovers

Winner: Big Order

This may forever be the only anime I ever drop with ONE EPISODE LEFT! After a slow start, by Episode 3 I was hooked. The concept was great, there were tons of interesting characters, the art design was cool and the opening song is fucking badass! But then by Episode 6 and 7, the show decided “Hey! Let’s make the most uninteresting character in the show the main character all of a sudden!” and had Sena in a more leading role. And she fucking killed it…the show, not the role. The incest was appalling enough, but after taking a wacky, fun show and trying to make it super serious and thought provoking: No, fuck you Big Order. Fuck you.

Worst Male Character

Dirk Eberwein – Asterisk War: Season 2

Hiiro – Cerberus

Emilio Langheim – Endride

Shun Asunaga – Endride

Tsuguhito Yuta – Kiznaiver

Winner: Dirk Eberwein – Asterisk War Season 2

As a wrestling fan, we have a term we use called “X-Pac Heat” or “Go Away Heat”. Basically, it’s when you hate someone but not to the point you want to see them get their comeuppance, you hate them because they’re taking valuable time away from the show you’re watching. Dirk has X-Pac Heat, I don’t want him on the show and I don’t care about the comeuppance he’ll eventually get. I just want this fat fuck off my screen.

Worst Female Character

Flora Klemm – Asterisk War: Season 2

Rin Suzunoki – Bakuon!!

Sena Hoshimiya – Big Order

Saraato – Cerberus

Claudia Lowetti – Hundred

Winner: Sena Hoshimiya – Big Order

Already mentioned it earlier, but Sena is a boring young girl who gets caught in multiple incestual relationships. There’s already so much to like here, everyone! But when the show decided to stick a rocket up her ass and shoot her to the top, the show suffered immensely because of it and thus this award is given to the one character out of the five that actually brought the show down.

Worst Show

Endride

Joker Game

Kumamiko -Girl Meets Bear-

The Lost Village

Three Leaves, Three Colors

Winner: The Lost Village

Hey Adam! Do you want to watch a super mysterious, yet maybe serious and murderous show with over thirty uninteresting characters who you should totally remember after we spend half of the first episode introducing them all to you?!

…No. Fuck off.

Best Opening Theme

“PUNCH☆MIND☆HAPPINESS” by Happy Clover – Anne Happy

“FEEL x ALIVE” by Sayaka Sasaki – Bakuon!!

“Disorder” by Yousei Teikoku – Big Order

“Bloodred” by D-selections – Hundred

“Lay Your Hands On Me” by Boom Boom Satellites – Kiznaiver

WINNER: Anne Happy

As much as I’d love to give this one to Boom Boom Satellites, especially with the saddening story of the band breaking up due to the vocalist’s health, I can’t not give this season’s award to Anne Happy. The song is so goddamn bouncy, catchy and infectious and the animation playing with it just adds onto how super happy and cheesy it is. This is how you make an opening theme for a comedy anime!

Best Ending Theme

“Ashita de Ii kara” by Various Actors (main cast) – Anne-Happy

“Voon! Voon! Ride On!” by Various Actors (Bike Club members) – Bakuon!!

“Namae wo Yobu yo” by Luck Life – Bungo Stray Dogs

“TABOOLESS” by Claire (M.A.O) & Liddy (Rika Kinugawa) & Erica (Yui Makino) –  Hundred (eps 4-5)

“Hajimari no Sokudo” by Sangatsu no Phantasia – Kiznaiver

WINNER: Bakuon!!

Another case of the animation really enhancing the song, Bakuon’s ending theme is a cute little pop-punk style song with a super adorable chibi animation, almost like the girls are paper cutouts. Very catchy tune.

Best Art Direction

And You Thought There Is Never A Girl Online

Bungo Stray Dogs

Flying Witch

Kiznaiver

Space Patrol Luluco

WINNER: Flying Witch

Originally planned to give this to Kiznaiver the entire season, but after looking through all my screencaps, it’s very obvious that Flying Witch isn’t just about the cool character designs like Kiznaiver. Everything Flying Witch animates is beautiful, the characters are gorgeous, the background are gorgeous, even the little things like the plants they pick, the materials Makoto and Akane use for their witchcraft, everything has a significant attention to detail in them and it all looks absolutely stunning.

Best Character Design

Bakuon!!

Bungo Stray Dogs

Flying Witch

Hundred

Kiznaiver

WINNER: Bungo Stray Dogs

This was never put into question. When you have the super cheesy and ridiculous facial expressions and gestures that Bungo Stray Dogs have, there’s no way I can not give them this award. Shots like Kyouka’s love for crepes, Osamu’s various coy faces and the many weird poses Atsushi ends up in when he’s freaking out, everything character-related in this show is fan-freaking-tastic!

Best Story

And You Thought There Is Never A Girl Online

Asterisk War: Season 2

Bungo Stray Dogs

Hundred

Kiznaiver

WINNER: Kiznaiver

Really the only show to get an emotional response from me this season, Kiznaiver easily gets this award. Especially towards the end where shit really hits the fan and the emotions get ramped up to an almost tear-jerking degree, I barely managed to get past Episode 10 without crying, it was a rough episode. Now the show has its episodes where the story is a little muddy, but when it’s on track, there’s nothing I watched this season in full that compared to it.

Best Screencap

01

— An average morning in Ren’s bedroom – Anne Happy

01

— Kyouka’s newfound love for crepes – Bungo Stray Dogs

01

— The proper way to get off a bus – Flying Witch

01

— A wonderful shot of Claire’s first kiss – Hundred

01

— The Gomorins at their best in random positions – Kiznaiver

WINNER: Kyouka – Bungo Stray Dogs

I thought the Gomorins screencap couldn’t be topped and then Kyouka had her first crepe and it was magic from then on. It’s the cutest thing I have ever seen in anime, I re-watched that reaction several times after it first happened. When the show already has such incredible facial expressions, it’s no wonder taking the cutest girl in the show and putting the cutest, innocent face on her and it’s because of food…how can I not give that the award?!

Sexiest Screencap

01

— Ako looking her best – And You Thought There Was Never A Girl Online

01

— Iyo getting her money worth before SOMEONE has to go for an implied incestual relationship – Big Order

01

— Sakura running the show’s swimsuit episode – Hundred

01

— The best Claire shot – Hundred

01

— The holy shit hot springs scene – Kiznaiver

WINNER: Sakura – Hundred

As much as I wanted to give this to Claire’s flotation devices or the image that made me start screencapping in the first place (Kiznaiver), I can’t deny Sakura for using her time well to create the sexiest shot I watched this season in anime. For a girl who’s traditional designed the way she is as a more proper character, she literally turns heads by fully abusing her beauty and flaunting it every chance she has. In this case, she’s aware she’s wearing a bikini one size too small and the bottoms are clinging to her butt. But she doesn’t care, she wants you to know it. And look at it.

Sexiest Female Character

Ako – And You Thought There Is Never A Girl Online

Ren – Anne-Happy

Rin – Big Order

Claire – Hundred

Sakura – Hundred

WINNER: Claire – Hundred

It’s so weird because I’m normally not into big-chested girls nearly as much as other characters. But Hundred really did a fantastic job of making me temporarily cast that rule aside and bring in Claire as the hottest girl from this season. Had I upheld this rule of mine, Rin would’ve taken the spot easily, but I can’t ignore Claire after the many sexy moments we had with her during the course of this even sexier version of an Infinite Stratos-style harem anime.

Best Male Character

Hideki – And You Thought There Is Never A Girl Online

Atsushi – Bungo Stray Dogs

Osamu – Bungo Stray Dogs

Katsuhira – Kiznaiver

Yoshiharu – Kiznaiver

WINNER: Osamu – Bungo Stray Dogs

Not a whole lot of great male characters this season, but Osamu is one of the few who really took advantage of this shortage for me this season. The coyness, the stupidity, the overtly ridiculousness of his character and taking the great character design of the show, it only added to the sillyness of his character. And I enjoyed every moment he was on-screen because of it.

Best Female Character

Anne – Anne-Happy

Julis – Asterisk War: Season 2

Kyouka – Bungo Stray Dogs

Chinatsu – Flying Witch

Makoto – Flying Witch

WINNER: Chinatsu – Flying Witch

There’s no girl this season that I “Awww’d” more to than Chinatsu-chan! Normally this award goes more towards girls that exude great character and also being strong girls, but Chinatsu’s free spirit and pure cuteness throughout the show is just too OP!!! Her voice actress, Eri Suzuki does a fantastic job of making this little girl the most adorable character on the screen this season. And that’s not just including humans, that includes everything!

Best Show

Anne-Happy

Bakuon!!

Flying Witch

Hundred

Kiznaiver

WINNER: Anne-Happy

Bakuon was super funny and cool, Flying Witch was a fantastic sit down and watch kind of show, Hundred was action-packed and sexy as fuck and Kiznaiver brought the feels with a fantastic cast of characters.

But Anne Happy had me in so many stitches over the course of their 12 episodes, I’d be in debt the rest of my life if I lived in America (go free health care in Canada!). The main five are all hilarious and adorable, the animation style is fantastic, including their facial expressions, gestures and even the still frames that are more chibi and cartoonish. Every episode had its hilarious moments and even the worst episodes of the show were still super entertaining to watch. There is no show this season I looked forward to watching more than Anne Happy this season, by a longshot too.

And there you have it, that’s my best of the spring anime of 2016. If you got your own winners for the season, don’t hesitate to leave them in the comments below!

Winter Anime 2016 Awards

So the winter anime season has ended (or at least every show has had their 12 episodes), so an awards show is in order! These awards will be for both the good and the bad of this season’s anime, nothing I watched this season gets a free pass!

And just to remind you all, along with this post, I plan to do an audio podcast going over each series that I finished in greater detail than my live reactions that I’ve been posting weekly. This will include things like who I liked and didn’t like (both personality and looks), the overall story, moments I enjoyed/hated and anything else I want to talk about pertaining to each show. I don’t know if I’ll be separating each show or do it as one big podcast, depends on how long the recording goes. So stay tuned!

Worst Opening Theme

“Contrail ~Kiseki~” by Mami Kawada – AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across The Blue

“Golden Life” by AKINO with bless4 – Active Raid

“white forces” by fripSide – Schwarzesmarken

“YPMA☆GIRLS” by Galko (Azumi Waki), Otako (Miyu Tomita), Ojou (Minami Takahashi) – Please Tell Me! Galko-chan

“Zessei Star Gate” by Shouta Aoi – Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation

Winner: “Golden Life” by AKINO with bless4 – Active Raid

The song is just overly cheesy to the point that it’s gone too far. It’s bad enough how boring and confusing the anime was for me, the intro song didn’t make me any more interested in watching the action about to unfold in front of me.

Worst Ending Theme

“Ame to Namida to Otome to Taiyaki” by Otome Shinto – Nurse Witch KOMUGI R

“CONTRAST” by vistlip – Divine Gate

“Hoshizora Rendezvous” by Sekkou Boys (Tomokazu Sugita, Shinonosuke Tachibana, Jun Fukuyama, Daisuke Ono) – Sekko Boys

“Kanashimi ga Jidai wo Kakeru” by Zahre [Katia Waldheim (Minami Tanaka), Irisdina Bernhard (Nozomi Yamamoto)] – Schwarzesmarken

“Meiyaku no Kanata” by Emi Nitta – Luck & Logic

Winner: “Kanashimi ga Jidai wo Kakeru” by Zahre [Katia Waldheim (Minami Tanaka), Irisdina Bernhard (Nozomi Yamamoto)] – Schwarzesmarken

Worst Story

AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across The Blue

BBK/BRNK

Dagashi Kashi

Luck & Logic

Pandora in the Crimson Shell Ghost Urn

Winner: Luck & Logic

There never really was much of a story to speak off in Luck & Logic until the very end and it was terrible and cliché. The first 10 episodes are essentially introducing the characters one-by-one and then the final two episodes are the most cliché writing of a final battle you could possibly have. It was just so boringly predictable.

Biggest Disappointment

Active Raid

AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across The Blue

Dagashi Kashi

Divine Gate

Luck & Logic

Winner: Dagashi Kashi

Oh my god, man…this was primed to be my favourite show after the first couple episodes! And then the jokes got stale…and they kept going with it like it was still funny. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still good comedy here, the art style is cool and there are some interesting characters in the show, but after such a great start the show just kept declining for me and never really recovered.

Worst Female Character

Asuka – AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across The Blue

Aqua – Konosuba -God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World-

Beatrix – Schwarzesmarken

Irina – AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across The Blue

Nana – Prince of Stride: Alternative

Winner: Irina – AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across The Blue

I’ll attribute this to professional wrestling. Irina for me had “X-Pac heat”, which is basically I hate you not because you’re a bitch, evil or whatever else that makes you a good bad guy, but because you’re so uninteresting and shitty that I just want you off my TV screen. Irina isn’t evil, she isn’t menacing, she’s not even really that bad. She’s just an annoying, coy little bitch with nothing of redeeming value, she isn’t even that pretty either AND ALMOST EVERY GIRL IS PRETTY IN ANIME!!!

Worst Male Character

Hiiragi – BBK/BRNK

Moguzo – Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Olga – Luck & Logic

Ranta – Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Shion – AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across The Blue

Winner: Hiiragi – BBK/BRNK

Why does every show with a group of over 4 characters have to have one character that is so unlikeable that you constantly want to punch him? Hiiragi was the biggest example during this season, there’s no redeeming qualities about him, he’s a pure unadulterated jackass and even at the very end when he’s trying to be a good team member, I still wanted to punch him.

Worst Show

Active Raid

Divine Gate

Nurse Witch Komugi R

Ojisan and Marshmallow

Sekko Boys

Winner: Divine Gate

Out of all the early drops, Divine Gate is the only one that pissed me off to the point of dropping it, Active Raid was disappointing, but Divine Gate is just pure garbage. It’s one of the most pretentious shows I’ve watched, it only serves to annoy me, which is a damn shame because the art style is fantastic in that show.

Best Opening Theme

“Beat your Heart” by Konomi Suzuki – BBK/BRNK

“Checkmate!?” by MICHI – Dagashi Kashi

“Genesis” by STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION – Dimension W

“Re:Re:” by ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION – Erased

“Stride” by OxT (Masayoshi Oishi x Tom-H@ck) – Prince of Stride: Alternative

Winner: “Genesis” by STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION – Dimension W

All five of these tracks could’ve won, but Genesis is the only song I’ve been actively singing for no apparent reason this season. It’s such a wicked rock/techno tune, the video aspect of this song is fantastically animated as well. It’s a song I have zero issue with playing loudly in my car with the windows down, even with the Japanese vocals.

Best Ending Theme

“ANGER/ANGER” by MYTH & ROID – BBK/BRNK

“Contrast” by Fo’xTails – Dimension W

“LoSe±CoNtRoL” by Nene Nanakorobi (Sanae Fuku) & Clarion (Manami Numakura) – Pandora in the Crimson Shell Ghost Urn

“Rare Drop☆KOI☆Koi! One More!” by Rina Izumi (Ayaka Suwa) & Aika Suzuki (M.A.O) – Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation

“Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no Youna” by Sayuri – Erased

Winner: “ANGER/ANGER” by MYTH & ROID – BBK/BRNK

That intro is so good to the song and to center it around Reoko who’s off the charts sexy and awesome was a fantastic choice. The song’s a weird mixture of darkness, sadness and badass…ness? Also if you listen to the full song, kind of reminds me of early Evanescence. Can’t go wrong with that.

Best Art Direction

BBK/BRNK

Dimension W

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Myriad Colors Phantom World

Pandora in the Crimson Shell Ghost Urn

Winner: BBK/BRNK

It’s like if RWBY’s art design was adapted into a Japanese anime, that’s essentially the art style of Bubuki Buranki. It’s a blend of beauty, 3D and over-the-top designs. Kind of looks a little bit like Fire Emblem’s current art style too. Look, you can’t go wrong with any of these names I’m referencing!

Best Story

Dimension W

Erased

GATE: Season 2

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Schwarzesmarken

Winner: Erased

Is anyone surprised that this one came out on top? It had me guessing the next events constantly and begging for more every time the credits rolled. It’s been a while since I’ve been that into a 12-episode series and the story is the big reason why.

Biggest Surprise

Erased

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Konosuba -God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World-

Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation

Schwarzesmarken

Winner: Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation

Even though it didn’t end as I’d hoped it would, this show was such a late bloomer, really the second half being what kicked it off. The first half was just good enough not to get me to drop it, but once the student council video game bullshit got tossed aside for some real world integration, the show picked up tenfold.

Sexiest Female Character

Aika – Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation

Kinoa – BBK/BRNK

Misaki – AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across The Blue

Reoko – BBK/BRNK

Sylvia – Schwarzesmarken

Winner: Misaki – AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across The Blue

She gets an unfair advantage being the girl out of the nominees with the most screen time in various states of undress, but Misaki really does earn her keep here. She is drop dead gorgeous, clearly in tip-top shape with the Flying Circus sport being as athletic as it is and well…come on, she’s got the best butt out of all the girls this season!

Best Male Character

Haruhiro – Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Kyouma – Dimension W

Loser – Dimension W

Satoru – Erased

Shuusaku – BBK/BRNK

Winner: Shuusaku – BBK/BRNK

It’s crazy that Shuusaku walks away with this award because at no point he was even listed until the very end here. But while I hated him early on, I realized pretty quick it’s just how good a bad guy he is, kind of how you gotta give props to really good heel characters in professional wrestling. But what really got him over the hump with me is just how much his badass voice really grew on me, he comes off like a total badass, the voice, the look, the fighting style, everything about him screams awesome.

Best Female Character

Barbara – Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Clarion – Pandora in the Crimson Shell Ghost Urn

Megumin – Konosuba -God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World-

Reoko – BBK/BRNK

Shizuru – BBK/BRNK

Winner: Shizuru – BBK/BRNK

Another late edition to these lists, Shizuru flies in under the radar, both in the awards and in the show she’s from. I had no care in the world for this girl until her first fight scene and then I was hooked. This silent but deadly girl is absolutely fantastic, being quiet the entire show, but piss her off and she fights like a goddamn Super Saiyan with a sniper rifle, considering how fast she is. Every fight scene she has in the show is a must-see and makes her a must-watch character.

GATE: Season 2

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Konosuba -God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World-

Schwarzesmarken

Winner: Erased

How shocking! I’m assuming this is the #1 show on over half of all anime watchers’ lists, this show was just fucking fantastic to watch and I’m usually not even into serious anime like this. But it has everything, great art direction, great music, great characters, great storylines and fantastic, memorable moments. From the first kill to Kayo’s breakfast breakdown, the show is an emotional roller coaster, one I may never forget. This will likely be the show of the year as I have a hard time seeing anything capture my heart as well as this has. This may just be the best show I’ve ever watched.

And there you have it, that’s my best of the winter anime of 2016. If you got your own winners for the season, don’t hesitate to leave them in the comments below!

2015 Radical Anime Awards

AwardsAnime

This year was the first year I really started to watch a lot of anime series. Because of Crunchyroll and Funimation, I’ve consumed enough anime this year to compile a short awards list for 2015.

Now remember, I don’t watch remotely close to all the shows that came out this season, nor do I have a staff to watch the rest for me. So this list will be compiled of shows I actually watched this year. So bear with me when your favourites aren’t even nominated, it likely means I didn’t see them.

Anyways, let’s start with what was bad this year!

Worst Opening Theme

  • “Zettai Muteki☆Fallin’ LOVE☆” by Chikyuu Bouei-bu (Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!)
  • “Kibou no Uta” by Ultra Tower (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma) – WINNER
  • “vanilla sky” by Mashiro Ayano (Gunslinger Stratos)
  • “Colorful Story” by every♥ing! (Re-Kan!)
  • “Cry for the Truth” by MICHI (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)

When it comes to how super intense or super goofy the show is at all times, this theme does not have either of those things going for it. It’s just a calm rock tune and it really doesn’t fit for what you’re about to watch. I wouldn’t expect peanut butter tentacle rape listening to this music.

Worst Ending Theme

  • “Ienai Ienai” by Hilcrhyme (Actually, I Am) – WINNER
  • “Prism Communicate” by Rory/Tuka/Lelei [various voice actresses] (GATE: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri)
  • “Hidamari Days” by Sisters [various voice actresses] (Himouto! Umaru-Chan)
  • “RIGHT LIGHT RISE” by Kanon Wakeshima (Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?)
  • “Secret Sky” by MICHI (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)

It pisses me off to no end that this is the song they chose to close that show. Compared to the really catchy opening tune, this song is just dull as hell, terribly rapped and just annoying as fuck. Ugh!

Worst Art/Animation Style

  • A Seiyu’s Life
  • Classroom ☆ Crisis
  • Re-Kan!
  • Tesagure! Bukatsu-mono – WINNER
  • Teekyu

It’s just ugly as fuck to me, is all. Might just be me, but it just doesn’t look attractive to me at all.

Worst Story

  • Castle Town Dandelion
  • Comet Lucifer
  • Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma
  • Lance n’ Masques
  • Sky Wizards Academy – WINNER

It’s essentially because I think it’s one of the best drawn anime I’ve watched all year, all three girls are gorgeous, the action is decent. I just couldn’t get past the halfway point of the show before I dropped it from my queue. Nothing was grabbing me, I was literally just watching action and ecchi. And if I wanted that, there’s plenty of other options that offer a decent story too.

Show I Should’ve Loved, But Hated

  • Castle Town Dandelion
  • Comet Lucifer – WINNER
  • Gunslinger Stratos
  • Heavy Object
  • Lance n’ Masques

The setting is beautiful, the character designs are beautiful, it reminds me of a tamer (MUCH TAMER) Gurren Lagann, but instead, Comet Lucifer is boring as fuck. Like Sky Wizards, I love the look of it, but I just can’t get into the story they’re trying to tell me. I wanted to like this so bad, but they prevented me from doing so.

Show That Looks Far Better Than It Is

  • Castle Town Dandelion
  • Comet Lucifer
  • Heavy Object
  • Sky Wizards Academy – WINNER
  • Snow White with the Red Hair

As I said earlier, it’s one of the best drawn anime I’ve watched, but the show is just not that interesting. If you read my Radical Sexy Awards post, Rico got the Sexiest Anime Girl award. And yet this show still isn’t that great. You gotta be really bad to have me admit you have the sexiest character of the year in it and I still don’t like the show much.

WTF! Moment of the Year

  • Multiple episodes of just curry food and the judge’s reactions (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma)
  • The jacking off innuendo with Miia’s tail (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou)
  • The end of every episode where the Seventh Brave still isn’t revealed (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)
  • Constantly mentioning how Kanata is a traitor but not explaining why [in the first few episodes] (Sky Wizards Academy) – WINNER
  • Just…just all of it (Teekyu)

How many bad things can I say about Sky Wizards Academy in this awards show? Well I’ve got one more. The initial few episodes before I dropped it, they’d constantly talk how main character Kanata is a traitor…except they’d never give you any context as to why. They’re bashing you over the head with “He’s bad! He’s a waste!” without giving you a reason to believe them. And in a video I made on my YouTube channel back then, I flipped my shit about it. It’s insulting to your intelligence when they do that.

Worst Female Character

  • Albedo (Overlord)
  • Alice Cleveland (Lance n’ Masques)
  • Mamori Tokonome (Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid)
  • Miia (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou) – WINNER
  • Rico Flamel (Sky Wizards Academy)

“Darling! Darling?! Daaarliiiiiiiiiiiing!!!” Ugh…shut the fuck up already, Miia! She seems like a sweet girl and all, but holy fuck is she annoying throughout the majority of the show. Pretty much the only time I didn’t want to tape her mouth shut was when she was being stealthy like “Snake” from Metal Gear. That’s about it, otherwise I had the duct tape ready.

Worst Male Character

  • Kaito Sera (Classroom ☆ Crisis)
  • Zenji Marui (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma)
  • Goldof Auora (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers) – WINNER
  • Kanata Age (Sky Wizards Academy)
  • Maroro (Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen)

I had Goldof pencilled in to be the bad guy during the entire show (while I did have the right culprit in the back of my mind the whole time as well), because he was the least significant one of the seven Braves. He’s boring, doesn’t talk much, he’s essentially a hulking silent type. He offered zero to the show for me.

Worst Show of the Year

  • HackaDoll: The Animation
  • Heavy Object
  • Lance n’ Masques
  • Tesagure! Bukatsu-mono – WINNER
  • Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid

It looked like shit to me, was boring as shit, the characters were annoying as shit and all their shit made zero sense. Perhaps there’s something about that show I was missing, but all I could think of when watching the first episode of it was “…This is shit!”.

And now, let’s get to the stuff that was awesome this year!

Best Opening Theme

  • “Himitsu wo Choudai” by Ars Magna (Actually, I Am) – WINNER
  • “Kakushinteki☆Metamaruphose!” by Umaru Doma [Aimi Tanaka] (Himouto! Umaru-chan)
  • “SUKI!SUKI!SUKI!” by Muco [Hitomi Yoshida] (Lovely Muuuuuuuco!)
  • “PUNCH LINE!” by Shokotan ♥ Denpa Gumi (Punch Line)
  • “Kimiiro Signal” by Luna Haruna (Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend)

Y’know, as much as I really wanted to give the award to Himouto! Umaru-Chan this year, there was no opening that was stuck in my head and had me singing it whenever I could sing a Japanese tune without weirding people out, than Actually, I Am’s theme. The song is a mix of cheesy and really sweet and the video that plays with the song matches it perfectly.

Best Ending Theme

  • “Anata no Omimi ni Plug In!” by Earphones [several voice actresses] (A Seiyu’s Life)
  • “Hey! Smith!!” by Smith and M.O.N. [several voice actresses] (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou) – WINNER
  • “Colorful” Miku Sawai (Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend)
  • “Inner Urge” by Sumire Uesaka (Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist)
  • “Calling my Twilight” by Kanako Itou (Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon)

I love BABYMETAL, so when I heard this song, it reminds me way too much like that group, just not nearly as fast-paced as the band is. But Monster Musume’s cheesy heavy metal (cause only Japan can do it this well) ending tune is just that damn good. The video playing along with it is equally cheesy as well, I fucking love M.O.N. (especially Zombina-chan). Also, I think it’s the only ending theme I know of that became an opening theme for one episode, which was the introduction of M.O.N. to the series.

Best Art/Animation Style

  • Actually, I Am
  • Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma
  • GATE: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri
  • Overlord
  • Punch Line – WINNER

Look I’m sorry that I didn’t pick Food Wars, okay?! But for me honestly, the animation style that I liked the most this year was Punch Line’s. No, the massive amounts of panty shots in the series have nothing to do with it. It’s like a calmer, smoother version of the Gurren Lagann style to me, it’s a little over the top, but not to the point it looks like an over-exaggerated Saturday morning cartoon. I loved the show this year and the beautiful animation art style was largely a part of why.

Best Story

  • Charlotte
  • Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?
  • Overlord
  • Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers – WINNER
  • School-Live!

When a story can have you screaming at your television for about the final 6-7 episodes for not revealing the traitor among the seven Braves and you’re still coming back as soon as you can watch the next episode, they’ve written a very engaging story. Even to the point that I hadn’t truly 100% guessed who it was, I had it narrowed down to a 50-50 chance and the correct person was one of them, but I never truly leaned towards that character. They always kept me guessing and that doesn’t happen often with me, I’m usually astute enough to figure things out before the very end.

Show I Should’ve Hated, But Loved

  • Bikini Warriors
  • Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!
  • Lovely Muuuuuuuco!
  • Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou – WINNER
  • Teekyu

When I first heard about this show, I had zero intention of watching it. I’ve seen a ton of art over the years featuring monster girls and they always bugged me. What can I say? I like my women fully humanoid. But when Monster Musume started on Crunchyroll, I curiously checked the screenshot for the episode and the animation was drawn beautifully. And I’m a sucker for good anime art so I turned it on. And I was immediately weirded out to the point I couldn’t stop watching it. Granted, once you got more characters in there to shorten the amount of Miia “DARLING!!!”s, it got far easier to watch. And like I said in my Anime Spotlight on the show, it does far more good things than a harem anime about monster girls had any business doing.

LOL! Moment of the Year

  • Peanut butter tentacle rape [Yes, I thought it was fucking hilarious] (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma)
  • Umaru’s entire setup for an anime marathon, aka the Potato/Cola scene (Himouto! Umaru-Chan)
  • Muco’s reaction to Komatsu and herself in their rain gear (Lovely Muuuuuuuco!)
  • How Papi plays Wii Sports/Suu joining in (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou)
  • Kuon peeping on Haku (Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen) – WINNER

It was already refreshing enough to have a scene in an anime where a girl was peeping on a guy, but the way Kuon handles her peeping session on Haku is just hysterical. Either Kuon’s never seen a boy naked before or Haku was packing, because once she saw whatever she saw, her reactions were nothing short of terror, fear and a ton of shivering. And she was drawn so well for that scene, it just added to how funny it ended up being.

HOLY SHIT! Moment of the Year

  • *SPOILERS* (Charlotte)
  • My mouth watering after every single food dish and I don’t even like fish! (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma)
  • *SPOILERS* (Overlord)
  • *SPOILERS* (School-Live!)
  • *SPOILERS* (Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist) – WINNER

At no point did I anticipate what we saw during that moment in Shimoneta. From the moment it started to the moment it ended was what seemed like an endless barrage of “WTF!”, “Holy shit!”, “Sweet Jesus!” and the ending with a massive amount of laughing. The other four moments featured some really violent shit…and then some delicious food, but Shimoneta’s nominee and now winner is a scene that perfectly encapsulates this award and it’s a scene that will probably be etched into my memory for an eternity. Holy fucking shit…

Best Couple

  • Adlet Myer/Fremy Speeddraw (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)
  • Hayato Izumi/Ui Wakana (My Wife is the Student Council President)
  • Ikki Kurogane/Stella Vermilion (Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry) – WINNERS
  • Nagisa Kiryu/Mizuki Sera (Classroom ☆ Crisis)
  • Yuu Otosaka/Nao Tomori (Charlotte)

After all, I did write an article about Ikki/Stella after watching the first half of the series. It’s not very often in a harem-style anime that not only does a couple form involving the guy everyone’s going after, but so quickly in the series. They’re also the one couple I’ve seen this year that felt realistic, genuine and actual issues between a newly started couple would actually have. They’re absolutely adorable to watch.

Best Female Character

  • Ayame Kajou (Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist)
  • Kuon (Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen) – WINNER
  • Nagisa Aizawa (Actually, I Am)
  • Umaru Doma (Himouto! Umaru-Chan)
  • Yuki Takeya (School-Live!)

There were so many good choices too from many different backgrounds and personalities. But for this award, I had to go with the character that displayed the best personality without being a part of a series where every action they have is over-exaggerated. Kuon is an absolute sweetheart, has her moments where she’s a strong female character, others where you laugh with her and others where honestly, you wish she was real, she’d be an absolute treat to be around.

Best Male Character

  • Adlet Myer (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)
  • Ainz Ooal Gown (Overlord)
  • Bell Cranel (Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?)
  • Soma Yukihira (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma) – WINNER
  • Yuu Otosaka (Charlotte)

There! Are you happy now! I finally gave Food Wars a positive award! There were some pretty good guys this year in anime, but none as enjoyable to watch as Soma. His mixture of a badass chef, mixed with well…he’s like the cooking version of Dragon Ball Z’s Goku. He’s an absolute goof the majority of the time, but when you turn that switch on, there’s no stopping him.

Show of the Year

  • Actually, I Am – WINNER
  • GATE: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri
  • Himouto! Umaru-Chan
  • Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend
  • Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist

To give this award out my criteria could’ve been far bigger. I could’ve based it on overall laughs, art style, the entire cast of characters, the music, everything you could possibly think of. But instead I based it on one piece of criteria: What show out of these five nominees did I actively refresh Crunchyroll to get the next episode the most? And the answer was Actually, I Am.

There’s no show this year I spent more time on my couch doing fuck all while waiting for the next episode to pop up when it was that day of the week. The show is the best mixture of laughs, adorable moments and also moments of real emotional consequences. The cast of characters for a harem anime aren’t all over the place trying to pull Asahi towards them. It’s a two-girl race essentially the whole show and those two have their own feelings about it while the remaining female cast act more as bridges for the two still in the race. It’s a series that while is bonkers, still takes itself and its story very seriously by the very end and it kept me very engaged from about Episode 3 onwards. An incredible watch for me this year.

And that’s been the 2015 Radical Anime Awards, hope you enjoyed it! If there’s a different pick from the list you would’ve done, or maybe I missed something, let me know down in the comments section below!
