Waifu, FWB or One-Night Stand? #2

It’s week #2 of the new weekly article on Tuesdays, Waifu, Friend With Benefits or One-Night Stand!

For those new to the article, this is not a post that talks about the “fuckability” of three randomly selected female characters from various anime and video games. I’m already attracted to them, it’s to be implied that I would share a bed with them already. What this article is meant to do, is go through their personalities, interests, anything pertinent to answering the question if they’re a one-time only, a friend that I might accept the occasional booty call from, or someone I would absolutely spend the rest of my life with.

So without further to do, let’s meet this week’s contestants!

01

This blonde-haired beauty from Infinite Stratos has been a mainstay on the top of the list when it comes to my favourite anime girls. Charlotte is just one of those girls that no matter how much anime I soak in and furthermore how many more female characters I take a liking to, no one can seem to take this girl off the top.

Starting out, Charlotte wasn’t even Charlotte, she was disguised as Charles Dunois, the second boy to be able to pilot as IS unit, essentially what would happen if you took a Gundam, made it human-sized and then removed the parts that cover up the chest and butt, for obvious reasons! But anyone who’s watched anime for more than five minutes could tell right from the very start (especially with the knowledge that Infinite Stratos is a harem anime) that Charles was not packing anything, at least not in the lower regions. So not long after, when “Charles” and Ichika are rooming together at the academy’s dorm, being the only two guys, he walks in on Charles in the shower and as it turned out, Charles was indeed packing…some pretty large breasts that somehow could be wrapped up to hide her true gender. But y’know…anime logic.

Deception aside, Charlotte makes no buts about it, she’s an absolute sweetheart. Even when disguised as a boy, she was an absolute wonder to be around. She comes from a wealthy family, though being born a baby from her father’s mistress, rather his wife. Not knowing her father, she lived with her mother until her sudden passing and was then adopted by her father. Being from France and from a wealthy family, she’s stereotyped as the elegant girl of the group, but doesn’t fall into the posh, holier-than-thou attitude that Cecilia does. Instead, Charlotte puts aside the negative connotations that comes with being from a rich family, in fact her father’s company being a top producer of IS units. She rarely gets angry, she’s not overly pushy and she doesn’t exert the common tsundere trope in anime girls.

However that doesn’t mean she’s free from anime tropes, she still falls into the trap of wanting to be with the MC, however will still call him a pervert if something happens out of her control (like having her breasts grabbed accidentally while going down a couples waterslide with Ichika). Though there have been times, especially while they were still rooming together where she even flat-out admits that she’d gladly partake in such actions if he at least talked to her about it first. It’s clear that her heart is open to romance and she’s not shy about it, she’d just rather it be on her terms.

Romantic preferences aside, Charlotte has essentially two sides to her in the show. She’s the elegant sweetheart of the group outside of battle, but when the IS unit gets put on, she’s a confident and strong young woman. She has zero issue protecting her friends, she’s not a damsel. In fact, she’s the one who really teaches Ichika how to pilot his IS in the beginning when the other girls are more concerned about spending time with him and trying to get into his pants than actually teaching him something.

So with me finished just going crazy on all the things I like about Charlotte, if you’ve kept up with my content, this decision will come as no surprise:

♥♥♥ #1 WAIFU ♥♥♥

Though Charlotte gets special treatment because she is my #1 choice for a wife within all fictional girls. If I only get to pick one fictional girl to make into a real person, it’s Charlotte without question. I’ve said it before, I’m not sure if someone will ever capture my heart as much as she has, she just the perfect girl for me. To quickly get her looks out of the way, she’s built so perfectly, she’s a smaller girl, doesn’t have massive breasts, an adorable hair style and dresses very cute. Hell, even when she was disguised as a guy, I thought she was attractive as all hell!

In terms of her personality, I can’t see many flaws with her. She’s not crazy, angry, selfish, snobby, anything that would completely turn me off of her. Instead, she’s calm, kind, caring, fun-loving and she has a bit of a romantic side to her, so long as you don’t grab her breasts on a waterslide or pull down her panties when she falls over while getting dressed and you trip over yourself trying to stop her from screaming in a dorm full of girls. She’s shown me over the course of the anime’s two seasons that she’s not just a friend, she’s your best friend. And one as beautiful as her, I would never ignore if such a person existed.

01

From a show that I’m still very salty about not getting the kind of attention it deserved, Kinoa from Bubuki Buranki is a very interesting personality to go through. There’s a lot of good to go through, but at the same time there’s a lot of issues the girl has had and gone through that’ll make this whole process a lot tougher than some of the other girls out there.

Right off the bat, Kinoa has a real temper. She’s very snappy at times, especially with Hiiragi, though I can accept her getting pissed off at him constantly, he’s a giant douche. Regardless, she does have a temper that often flares up and she’s quite cynical and pushy.

However we have to take into account the mental trauma the girl has gone through before the anime even begins. Aside from the whole world being in chaos under Reoko’s rule and possibly her parents being killed (can’t remember if hers were killed like others were, can’t find the answer online either), she was taken advantage of by the much older Souya when she was younger and obviously more naïve and trusting. While we’re left to assume it wasn’t a rape-level situation, we are told to assume that the two of them at one point had a sexual relationship and that once Souya had his fun, he left her high and dry, sending her into the vengeful badass bitch she is as the series starts.

So it’s really hard to fault her for some of the more negative personality traits she has. The question I’m left with is if I should take everything as is, or judge her more based on what she’d be like without all that trauma. So when I cast aside all that for the time being, what I see in Kinoa is a cool, fun-loving tomboyish girl who has a sweet side to her once you get close enough to her. We see flashes of that sweet side in the flashbacks of her, she doesn’t really ever bring it out in the present time though.

Taking her full personality into the fray though, it’s a little different. With her vengeful status, she’s a lot more on the take no prisoners, hot-headed side of things personality-wise. She does carry that confidence and swagger about her with her fighting ability and is a very strong young woman.

Unfortunately, the reality is that we are taking the character in full, so because of the added effects of her mental trauma, the decision is as follows:

♦ FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS ♦

I imagine behind all the problems she has because of the entire situation going on and especially Souya’s “game” he played with her, Kinoa would probably be a super cool person to be around and may have even crossed into Waifu territory, as I really do like her. But with the temper she has and the other issues, it’s too difficult to go that far down the road with her. Granted, I can easily see her being much more approachable down the line once you’ve gotten her comfortable around you and trusting you unlike the 99.9% of people she comes into contact with. She’s a drop dead gorgeous girl who deserves better than what she was given.

01

Specifically using the Harvest Moon 64 version of Karen, she’s quite the interesting character throughout the entire series. A wine connoisseur, a brash and rebellious girl, there’s a lot to talk about with her.

Right off the bat, she has massive walls when it comes to be social with people. Anyone meeting her for the first time will not get much out of her, she’s very cold and distant at first. When you add massive family troubles into the mix, you get a girl who at first glance while is attractive as all hell, in terms of her personality she isn’t attractive at all. She’s a vineyard’s owner’s daughter who wants to leave the countryside to go to the big city, but her father’s having none of it, being the typical asshole father you see in fictional works. Because of all this, she’s become very apathetic to everything else around her, you the main character as well. She only has one real known friend in the game in Ann, who granted is as bold as Karen can be.

It’s once you get through those barriers of hers and see the real side of Karen that she really gets fleshed out and brought into the forefront. When her normal self, she’s an absolute treat to be around, she’s very cool, funny, has a bit of a sweet side that she still tries to hide a bit and then of course she keeps that rebellious fun-loving spirit going at all times. If you took this girl out of the 1999 released game and put her in today’s society, she’d pretty much be a punk rock rebellious kind of girl, I think. Hell, it’s very possible she’d lean as far as being a lesbian or bisexual, possibly giving Ann something to think about.

The only weird thing about her and I won’t put too much stock into this, is once you marry her, her attitude kind of changes a bit too much when she starts calling you “Honey” and other sweet names. I don’t think she’d actually go that route at any point, so I attribute to that more to bad writing from the game developers. Regardless, she’s still a good wife in the game, a lot more like your best friend than anything else.

So with all that being taken into account, where does Karen fall into the fray here?

♥ WAIFU ♥

It was a tough decision, but in the end I decided to take Karen as far as I could go. There’s a few challenges in a potential relationship with someone like Karen, obviously the first month or so around her will be a game of trying to get closer to her without getting so close she backs off. The other wildcard in this that I didn’t talk about much before is her drinking. She’s commonly known as a champion drinker and she also has the wine connoisseur to her name, so the challenge of being a straight-edge companion of hers is definitely a hard one to overcome. But I think in the end it’s worth all the work. I see her as your closest friend in the world and while Charlotte is the sweetheart kind of best friend, Karen’s the free-spirit kind of best friend.

So that’s this week’s editon of Waifu, FWB, or One-Night Stand, hope you enjoyed it! Leave any comments you’ve got below, whether it’s your own choices between the three or maybe I’m missing something that could’ve turned the tide on my decision with any one of these girls.

[NSFW] Fantasy Girls: Charlotte Dunois

Charlotte_Dunois_full_467152

I think if it wasn’t for Fantasy Girls subject #1 in Rikku being my first fantasy character crush and someone I’ve had many more years of exposure to, Charlotte may be at the top of my list.

At the very least, she’s the longest reigning champion in this decade. Kuon from Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen finally just recently took the throne from Charlotte, but this lovely blonde has had the crown since I first got exposed to her character when Infinite Stratos was released in English in 2012.

I’ve already mentioned it before, but Infinite Stratos is one of my favourite, if not my favourite anime of all-time, which to some might be weird because it’s a harem anime. But the show has had some of my most favourite characters ever in anime on its roster, girls like Laura Bodewig and Houki Shinonono. But Charlotte stands in a class all on her own, she truly is a girl that at no point during the series have I ever looked at her with any disdain.

‘Charles’ Dunois

I knew she wasn’t a boy from the get go. Hair was too pretty. It’s also a harem anime, do the math, they’re not gonna have a pretty gay boy added into the mix, the show isn’t a giant comedic parody of harems. Once you saw Charles in his IS pilot gear, you know he was actually a she almost instantly. The way her skin’s drawn and the shape of her hips (not to mention her crotch area makes it real obvious too) really give it away. Basically the only thing they did to try and hide it was to not have any butt shots of her while still pretending to be male. I don’t know if they actually put in an effort to disguise her as a male or if it really was supposed to be that obvious. All I know for sure is that I’ve become really good at pointing out girls dressing as guys and vice-versa in anime.

Ichika discovering ‘Charlotte’ in the shower

The moment itself where Ichika discovers that ‘Charles’ is actually a ‘Charlotte’ is a pretty sudden moment, he basically goes to shower and discovers there’s a familiar blonde-haired figure naked in there already and forgot to lock the door. Also, why does Charles suddenly have C-cups? And also doesn’t have a pen-! Ohhhhhhhhhh! Since harem protagonists are usually dumb and/or clueless, Ichika’s the only one of us staring at the current situation with any surprise whatsoever. It doesn’t help that not long after she trips while dressing for bed and Ichika gets a good look at her panty-covered ass. Trying to keep her from shrieking and blowing everyone’s cover, he tries to stop her but trips and in the most unlikely scenario, pulls her panties right off (cause that’s possible). So Charlotte’s first day on our screens was…eventful to say the least.

I did really enjoy her male character as well, she doesn’t change too much from when she finally reveals herself to everyone as female. She is extremely polite, sweet and adorable (yes that includes when she was disguised as a male and NO ONE had any idea *sarcasm*) and that doesn’t change when she’s a girl full-time again. She just gets more girly and emotional (and calls Ichika a pervert, because it’s his fault she wanted to ride a couples slide with him and the force of the slide caused his hands to bounce up and onto her chest) at times where she was clearly holding herself back as a male in disguise.

Infinite Stratos 2 - 01 - Large 43
Charlotte and Ichika on the couples slide

In terms of her looks, I put her at the top of the list, barely ahead of Houki (who’s smoking hot in Season 2), Cecilia and Chifuyu who are all built to be more sexy than beautiful. The thing with Charlotte though, is she’s the best of both worlds, in her swimsuit (especially the blue bikini in Season 2, not that big a fan of her orange/black getup in Season 1) she shows she can be sexy, but while she has those sexy moments, her default look is pure beauty. She’s pretty, cute, adorable, whatever term you’d like to use. She’s the pretty girl that when you’re close enough to her shows off that sexy side, which is just incredible as well.

The thing that really separates Charlotte from the other girls as well is how even when dressed more masculine, she still exerts the same amount of beauty. I think she’s actually hotter in her male version of the IS suit than the female and that one shows off her ass more. But the male version instead of giving you easy access to butt shots, it’s cut above the stomach, so you get that bit of skin with her belly button and all. For me, it’s surprisingly sexier to me, not 100% sure how to explain it though. The other part that also adds onto her sexiness is the French accent she has (in the English dubbed version). Some may look at it as a little over the top, I think it adds so much more to her, I think it’s sexy as hell.

Laura & Charlotte in cat pajamas

Probably my favourite part of Charlotte outside of just her looks and personality, is her relationship with my second favourite character of the series, Laura. Initially enemies when Laura was still in bad German girl mode, in the second season especially we see the two of them more like sisters than anything else. Obviously they’re still rivals for Ichika’s affection, but when it’s just the two of them, they’re probably my favourite non-lesbian and non-related pairing of two female characters. Scenes like the cat pajamas where she absolutely has Laura embarrassed to the nth degree and the mixed berry crepe escapade are two great examples of how even the biggest of rivals can find a way to create such an adorable relationship.

Charlotte piloting the Raphael Revival Custom II

Last but not least for the feminists out there who want to pull out the sexist card and whatnot, Charlotte out of all the girls vying for his attention shows the most level head. She’s the least likely to get angry, is able to stay calm most of the series and has a huge hand in training Ichika as an IS pilot in the early going of the series. Rin and Cecilia fought to no end and Houki couldn’t get her head straight, clearly way too busy thinking about what was (somehow not throbbing) underneath those tight IS pilot pants. Charlotte is the best teacher Ichika has who isn’t an actual staff member of the IS Academy, without her he’d never be able to handle a gun, something that comes in handy later on in the series. So yes she’s in various states of undress (cause girls do have to change their clothes once in a while and actually wear somewhat revealing swimwear!) and often exerts a little bit of girly expressions (because she’s a girl!), but she’s far more than just the pretty face who has a camera following her ass the entire series. She’s much more important than that.

Personally, I think she’s the best choice out of all the girls for Ichika as well. Clearly during their time together they develop a bit of a relationship that never really materializes due to various interruptions by the other girls. And honestly, I think Ichika has no interest in a loving relationship with Houki, I watch the series and still to this day feel like he looks at her like a sister, or at the very least a really close friend, but I don’t see attraction when he looks at Houki. Whereas with Charlotte, I can name a few times, certainly more than with Houki.

Minus the poodle outfit she wears in Season 2 (slightly stereotypical), pretty much everything she’s a part of in the series is fantastic. She’s beautiful, she’s smart, she’s funny, she’s dependable and most of all, she comes off like a best friend, someone you could easily get close to right away. I know I have Kuon currently in the #1 waifu spot, but man, Charlotte’s had that spot for almost four whole years. That definitely accounts for something.

I’d love to have a mixed berry crepe with her one day. Though I’ll be far too old before that technology comes out.

Top 10 Anime Girls I’d Marry

A couple weeks ago I had the difficult decision to pick the Top 10 girls in all of anime that I’d list for a one-night stand. That was all fun and games, but now it’s time to get serious! These ten have to be more than a pretty face and body, they have to also have the personality that would work with me and the feeling that I’d want more than to just hang out with them. Also it helps that they aren’t likely to kill me or hurt me pretty badly…

As usual this is my own list taking into account my own preferences, so my list will be way different than yours. And there’s always characters I’ve never heard of or haven’t watched so I don’t know them inside and out. And because some characters may have difficulty applying to real life (cause, y’know…it’s anime), there’ll be a couple characters I adjust slightly to work with this situation.

Anyways, let’s get to it!

10

My first anime crush, Cagalli has been etched into my psyche for a long time now. The downside to that is there’s been plenty of time to take her further and further down the totem pole. However she’s still leaps and bounds more interesting than the majority of anime girls out there, she’s a tough girl with a tiny bit of a laid back personality when she’s not fighting for her life. She of course gets extra points being a tomboy, something that always works well with me. Man…I still can remember that sequence in Gundam Seed with her and Athrun on that deserted island as if I watched it yesterday.

09

Lynette’s an absolute freaking sweetheart, she’s awesome. She’s also got that shy side of her as well that’s really cute. A huge plus for me is she’s a pretty good cook (I’m god awful in the kitchen right now), so it would certainly be nice to have someone directing me rather than leaving me to burn the house down. I suppose her being in an alternate WWII-era anime requires some change to bring her into the present day, but given her look and attitude, I don’t see that being an issue.

08

Right off the bat, yes I know she’s a tiny alien inside an AI unit designed exactly like her in human size. So let’s just assume the AI unit is the actual human body for this. Nagisa is a crazy mixture all over, she can be that adorable girl, but she’s also so unpredictable and a little crazy, which can be fun (when she’s not holding a Memory Erasure Apparatus, I mean…hammer…) as well. Not to mention the blue hair/green eyes combination looks fantastic on her. One of my favourite girls from this year’s worth of anime.

07

I seem to like a lot of girls in sci-fi kind of anime, the third character of the first four so far that has something to do with outer space. I’m not even convinced I’d need to take away Marika’s space pirate work, she doesn’t seem to let it change her to the point of the stereotypical rum-drinking, cursing, violent pirate. Instead she’s an absolute sweetheart, very fun loving and let’s be honest here, she’s gorgeous. I don’t think even in full pirate getup and holding a gun right to my head, I still wouldn’t think in the back of my head “Damn she’s pretty…”.

06

Granted, this character is inside a video game, so we can safely assume the role of the character’s self in the real world, Shizuka Hanekura. Specifically in Log Horizon, Akatsuki is easily the cutest assassin I’ve ever seen in any form of media. She has to be when one of the side characters tries to dress her up in pretty clothes and hugs the shit out of her every time she comes across her. Personality-wise, I really don’t pay much attention to her “my lord” portion, other than the fact you know she’s loyal to you once you’ve earned her respect. Otherwise, she is clearly very shy and reserved, looking even more adorable when doing so. I just hope Akatsuki is the only part of Shizuka that’s swung a sharp object.

05

Looking at the rest of this list, I can safely say we’re away from all the outer space ladies, but something will remain consistent for almost the entire Top 5: tomboys. Makoto is the tomboyish character in Idolmaster that wants to be a girly pop idol like everyone else, but her tomboyish figure for the most part prevents that, everyone prefers to dress her more like a guy. Honestly, I could go either way, she looks really good in her more masculine clothes such as the tanktop and shorts she’s wearing in the picture above. But I’d have zero issues with her in a cute top, skirt and thigh high socks if that’s what she wants to do. She’s pretty enough that she can pull off both sides.

04

It’s crazy that in an anime/visual novel where there’s so many to choose from, especially ones designed to be perfect (Nerine, Lisianthus, Kareha, etc.), Asa’s the one I’d pick by not just a small margin, but by a landslide. This green-haired sporty tomboy is fucking awesome, she really gives off that best friend in the entire world attitude. But she also backs up her awesome personality with pure beauty, past the joking and stuff she is an absolutely beautiful girl and is very adorable when you get close enough to her to unlock that part of her personality. Though the denim shorts cut into bikini bottoms still baffles me. Tomboy, I guess.

03

Rikka’s probably the closest character in terms of her overall looks and personality to my actual real-life girlfriend and before you even think it, no, my girlfriend is 27 like me. Minus the acting like she’s still an anime heroine, Rikka is easily the cutest of all the girls on this list in terms of personality. She’s very over-exaggerating with her emotions, whether she shows that by her facial expressions, or waving her hands about (my girlfriend does this a lot when she speaks). She’s totally adorable, you just want to give her the biggest hug ever. I imagine once she’s grown up a little more, probably after high school, she’s the perfect mixture of a young adult who still has a little bit of their inner child out there.

02

I said so many good things about Charlotte in my Top 10 Infinite Stratos Girls list, but she just misses the #1 spot. But it’s no easy feat to get #2 and Charlotte works hard to do that. She’s one of very few blonde-haired characters that’s really gotten my attention, it helps that she dressed like a guy for half the first season and has a curious mixture of a tomboy, but seems to lean to a more girly side once her real gender is discovered. And then there’s that French accent of her, which is sexy as fuck. She really gives off that sweet girl feeling, the kind of girl you’d want to take out to a nice dinner to, not just a movie or something trivial like that. You think she’s worth the effort, as certainly do I.

But if Charlotte, the girl I’ve been talking endlessly about these past couple weeks isn’t #1, who is? Well…

01

I don’t even want to remove her cat ears and tail, fuck it, have nekojin exist in our world for this, it only adds to how beautiful this woman is. The first time I saw Kuon in Episode 1 of Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen, I thought she was really cute, but wasn’t sure how I’d feel about her personality. Generally speaking, characters that look like how she does can often be a little hyper, or too overly cute. But by the end of Episode 1 after watching how this woman acts, the only thought coming to my head was “Holy shit, if this girl was real…”, though of course I am in a great 8-year relationship, I’m not the kind of terrible guy who’d drop a girl just because he came across a prettier one who’s into him. Putting all that aside though, there’s no denying the perfection that is Kuon. She’s one of the prettiest girls in any fictional media I’ve ever come across and may just have the best personality out of all of them. She’s sweet, she’s loving, she’s caring, she’s funny, she’s adorable and she has no problem getting serious when she has to. She’s the total package and easily the #1 candidate for an anime marriage if one could ever exist.

Hope you enjoyed the list, once again I had a blast/hard time making this one up. If you’ve got your own opinions, especially involving characters I didn’t even mention, don’t hesitate to share them in the comments below!

Top 10 Infinite Stratos Girls

Last week, I couldn’t decide which girl from this series to put as my #1 girl from an anime I’d sleep with, so I put the entire female cast as #1. This week however, I have the impossible task of picking 10 of them and ranking them. This is gonna be painful…

So to make it fair for every character on the show, the rules will be far simpler than the usual fodder. There are three things they’re being judged on: One, their overall looks, of course. Two, how they look in alternate clothing compared to their default uniform (but to make it fair, I’m not counting their “Ichika servant” costumes from the second season, ex: Cecilia’s bunny hostess outfit). And three, the combination of their voice and personality. This way, I’m not biased based on what someone did during the series (ex: Charlotte in the shower, Laura being naked in Ichika’s bed, etc.), I’m judging them solely on what I see looks and personality-wise.

So without further to do, let’s hop to it!

10

We start off with the teacher at the IS Academy that we see and isn’t related to Ichika. Maya is pretty average at best, I suppose what’s meant to bring guys towards her are breasts, she has possibly the largest set of the series, which is still a tame size for anime. She is very sweet though, one of the few characters in the series who isn’t either crazy or super serious. But because of that she falls into the background compared to a lot of the other girls, so that puts her into the #10 spot.

09

I’m convinced Tabane would be further on this list if she wasn’t batshit fucking stone cold crazy. While I love her English voice, I am well aware that it would get old really fast. She’s good in spurts, but having her around for an extended period of time would probably drive me insane. Regardless though, she’s a very attractive woman and the mysterious factor with her does apply on top of that. I just wouldn’t invite her directly to my house, she’d destroy the yard with that giant carrot thing she crashes down in.

08

It wasn’t until I started this list and going back to find pictures of all the characters that I realized I completely forgot about Riko when I was mentioning all the side girls in the Top 10 Anime Girls I’d Sleep With list. Out of all the girls that isn’t designed to stand out, Riko’s easily the prettiest to me. As per usual, the glasses add onto her look, but she’s also shaped very nicely. She also gives off that very shy personality, which I always enjoy as well. If not for all the main characters getting so much more screen time, she’d probably be higher on this list.

07

I’ve really grown to like Cecilia a lot more than I initially did when I first watched the initial season. She came off very bitchy to me the first time, however after watching through it again, I started to see a little deeper into her character and began to half-ass like her. Then by Season 2, she moved up to “All right, you’re cool.” status. She’s arguably designed to be the sexiest girl in the show and yeah she’s right up there, but with my tastes she’s just not quite there to at least attain top 5 status.

06

Without a shadow of a doubt, the best of the entire cast of side characters and it’s crazy saying that when the most you see Honne out of that mascot costume is her top half. I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised when you see her top half in Season 2 and she has a larger than average bust, but regardless she still stands out as a wonderful personality, someone who seems absolutely hilarious and fun to be around. And I can only imagine how she looks with the costume completely off…

05

I’m going to be completely honest. I absolutely hated Houki in Season 1. Detested her. Completely pissed off that of all the girls, she’s the one that’s designed to be Ichika’s choice. But then Season 2 came around. The red bikini from Episode 1 was a good start, but then she really started opening up a little more, I was feeling a lot less of the bitch side of her coming out and a little more of her insecurities. I think Houki is the kind of girl you really have to work on getting close to before you ever see the softer side of her, she has a very tough exterior shell that is on full display until you can prove to her that you’re all right. And with the body she has, especially given her immense training regiments, she’s always in great shape, it’s hard to ignore her. She’s worth the effort.

04

There is very little I can say about Infinite Stratos as a whole that pisses me off. The way they pretty much toss Ran aside is one of them. I’m willing to say, I think she’s arguably the cutest girl in the entire series (and I really love Laura) and she’s essentially tossed aside, even though she on two separate occasions displays that she really likes Ichika. She even tells him she can’t wait to get into the IS Academy so she can see him more. It’s kind of frustrating to see that kind of devotion just put on the shelf as if it didn’t matter. I mean as far as we know, her only intention of joining the IS Academy was to be around him more, she says to him that she can’t wait for him to become her upperclassman. Anyways, like I said she’s probably the cutest girl of the series and she has a really great mix of a personality. And seeing how laid back she is in her own home is also a comfortable feeling.

As many times as I think about how I’d have to be her sparring partner if she ever existed and I was dating her, I still keep on believing that Laura’s worth it. Only in anime can a killing machine be this adorable. I knew the second she showed up on screen I was gonna like her and I was more than right. Take away the vengeful, badass trained soldier from Laura and you get one of the cutest girls on the show. And when you’re into smaller girls like I am, she’s a perfect match. The only real things against her being #1 is the eyepatch and the fact she could snap my arm with incredible ease. Scary!

When she’s not being featured in incest-innuendo inducing scenes in the series, Chifuyu is shown off as easily the sexiest woman in the entire series, at least in my opinion. Season 1’s beach episode cemented that fact, I don’t care how good-looking Houki was in Season 2, she still can’t hold a candle to Chifuyu in that black getup, especially that butt shot while she’s giving volleyball signals that I will never make an effort to find out what it meant. If not for her sometimes bitch attitude and the feeling that she’d be very demanding of her partner (I mean just look how Ichika is around her, the things he does for her and he’s her brother), she’s be #1 without question.

But because of that, that means our #1 girl in the Infinite Stratos series is…

01

The Top 10 list was hard to make, except for the #1 spot, I knew who it was long before. If there’s something in anime that just seems to work for me when it comes to female characters, it’s the ones who disguise themselves as boys. I don’t know how or why, but those are the ones that always end up being the most attractive to me (ex: Naoto Shirogane from Persona 4). Charlotte’s a rare case to where a blonde is at the top of a list in terms of girls, I’m usually not the biggest fan of blondes in anime, compared to the many other colour options I have to choose from. Blondes tend to be designed to be very bitchy or overly-sexualized. Charlotte on the other hand is the opposite, she’s super sweet, comes off very shy at times, but can switch to serious when she needs to. Of course, her French accent just cements how attractive she comes off. You’ll be seeing her again for sure on a Top 10 when I do the Anime Girls I’d Marry list. Will she be #1 there? It’s very possible, but remember, I had Rikku slated #1 for the gaming list and then I changed my mind at the very end. So you never know.

Thanks for reading, as always I enjoyed making this list and if you have your own Top 10, or maybe just a quick switch, don’t hesitate to leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Anime Spotlight: Infinite Stratos

89p7

My favourite anime of all-time is currently Infinite Stratos. Yes, that means shows like Dragon Ball Z, Hellsing and many other very popular shows (I don’t watch the major ones like Naruto, Bleach, Attack on Titan, etc.) are behind a harem anime with mechs. So sue me.

Like I said in my article Tuesday, I love harem anime, but not just because of the ecchi content. IS encompasses all the things I love in anime and then does something no other show has done to the same quality thus far.

The concept is pretty straightforward for a harem anime. The IS Academy houses young girls from all over the world who have the capability to pilot an IS unit. Ichika Orimura however mysteriously becomes the first male to ever be able to pilot a unit and thus becomes the classic one guy in a massive group of girls. And yes, he is pretty much completely clueless that essentially every girl in the entire campus (maybe even counting the instructors, yes that includes his sister, Chifuyu) wants him. The two seasons so far (if there’s ever a third) are largely episodes split into thirds. One-third action, one-third serious story time and one-third comedy/ecchi. And the show does all three well.

For starters, the action sequences in the entire series are phenomenal. They come off very much like some of the best Gundam action you can get, except there’s no need for shots of the pilot inside the mech as in Infinite Stratos, the mech doesn’t cover up their head and for some, their hips (gotta get a little butt action apparently). There really isn’t a battle that I didn’t enjoy watching, they’re done very well and each major strike has a purpose. I can imagine anyone enjoying this series’ action scenes if some weren’t thrown off by the half-naked girls.

The story itself is also very good outside of the main girls trying to gain Ichika’s affection. The first season ended a little abruptly, but the second season gained a lot of steam, having legitimate villains around that time. Some would say the story is a little under-developed, but keep in mind a large focus of a harem anime is usually the relationships, so there’s only so much time to work with and IS does a pretty good job of working with what they’ve got.

Finally, of course the ecchi content is just as phenomenal as well. Unless I’ve forgotten, they don’t resort to the usual cliché ecchi anime likes to do, which is have girls grope each other. Instead they get a little more creative (no matter how ridiculous it may be) with some of their scenes. Of course, the “shocking” (cause you couldn’t call it a mile away) reveal in the shower that Charles is actually a Charlotte is a very sudden and perfectly drawn/animated scene. My personal favourite though is Ichika waking up the following morning after Laura claimed him as her “bride” and finds her naked in his bed. When he tries to flee, she captures him in an armbar (which only works for her when you’re nigh flat-chested) and blushes as she offers to be his training partner, cause of course a 15 year-old female Spetsnaz-similarly trained soldier would blush thinking about that. There’s tons of adorable moments, like in Season 2 when Houki goes down the couple slide with Ichika. There’s a mixture of cute, beautiful and downright sexy throughout the series and whenever it takes place, it works well with that respective character.

Which brings me to my favourite thing about the series.

The one thing that Infinite Stratos does that I never expected to do be as well as I would have ever expected, is the English dubbing of the series and its various accents they use with the girls. Granted if the character is Asian, they get normal American voices. But Charlotte (French), Cecilia (British) and Laura (German) all have very distinct accents that don’t sound like over-exaggerations and are done almost perfectly, capturing their nationality very well. Most English dubs just aren’t that great, so when you try to employ accents into the dub as well, you’re almost asking for trouble. But IS not only doesn’t fail the English voicing, but the accents are great as well, they really do enhance their respective characters.

So yeah, if you can get past harem anime and you haven’t given Infinite Stratos a check, I suggest you do so!
