Character Spotlight: Nagisa Aizawa

One of my favourite shows from the Summer 2015 season was the comedic harem of Actually, I Am (Jitsu wa Watashi wa). With the four different girls to choose from in the show (not counting their teacher and principal), you would think I’d go the Youko route, maybe Mikan, Shido not so much, she’s a bit much with her sexual nature. But at the end of the season, it wasn’t even a contest. I went with the girl that technically is the size of a pencil: Nagisa Aizawa.

It’s surprising when I think about it, of all the girls I chose, I went with the one that I could technically never have a physical relationship with. Yes, she has a human-sized external unit that looks exactly like her and acts as she does, but even if all the parts are like a human’s and she would experience something like say a kiss, I’m still not physically kissing the actual Nagisa. And yet she’s still easily the most interesting and attractive girl of the group.

Right from the start, Nagisa looks like she’s set to be the holier than thou, proper girl who has a short fuse, but after Episode 1 where you realize just how crazy the show’s going to get with Youko being outed as a vampire, it becomes very obvious that whatever we see on the surface isn’t what it seems. Sure enough, the following episode she gets outed as the tiny alien she is and we see a whole ‘nother side of her. We slowly see her begin to loosen up, open her heart to Asahi and that side of her is absolutely beautiful.

Even though Youko was clearly penciled in as the cute girl that the MC would be going for in the end, I don’t think she even holds a candle to how adorable Nagisa can be. The first moments where she realizes that she actually has feelings for Asahi is a super adorable moment, seeing her all curled up in her seat, trying to understand why she’s feeling the way she does when up until that point she was constantly distancing herself from him. After that, it’s a constant flurry of blushing, stuttering and losses of her train of thought and it’s fantastic watching her go through those various moments in the series.

It’s very clear to me that if you get Nagisa alone and there’s no crazy shit getting in the way of anything, she’s a super down to earth girl (ha, it’s funny cause she’s an alien!) and she’d be a cool best friend kind of person. The couple of times we get a little bit of her in this state, she really is a wonderful young woman. When she isn’t flustered and when Shido isn’t trying to strip her, she’s a fucking phenomenal girl and I would absolutely love to hang out with her, shoot the shit, all that jazz.

For a show that got little attention, it breaks my heart that not a lot of people really bothered to watch the show and experience the amazing girl that is Nagisa Aizawa. Granted, she may try to “erase your memory” by hitting you over the head with a hammer, but when she’s not trying to be violent, she’s one of the most adorable female characters I’ve ever come across in anime. And best of all, she looks like a normal girl, minus the blue hair. She’s not given massive breasts, she’s not wearing scantily clad clothes, she’s just your average high school girl. And that has a charm to it.

Still…the whole tiny alien thing is gonna make things really difficult. How do you hug her? With two fingers? Come to think of it…how’d she get an exact replica of her school uniform in that size? What about her other clothes? Does she have a massive stockpile of clothing? Cause I’d have to assume if they started to rip, she’d run out, unless she starts stealing clothes from dolls or something………………….

Anime Spotlight: Actually, I Am

(left to right) Nagisa, Shiho, Youko, Mikan

My favourite overall anime of the Summer 2015 season of anime, “Jitsu wa Watashi wa”, or “Actually, I Am” had everything I could ever want in a harem-style anime. It had a great art style, interesting characters, a ton of comedy and actually managed to accomplish all that in a harem anime without having an excessive amount of sexual content in it, aside from Shiho. It’s the one anime that by the end of the summer season, it was the only one I was refreshing Crunchyroll every hour until it popped up in the queue the day it was supposed to be out every week.

Youko & Asahi
Youko & Asahi

The entire 12-episode series is a romantic comedy that happens to have every involved girl in possession of some otherworldly quirk. Youko is a vampire, while Nagisa is a less than foot tall alien inside a life-sized robot version of herself. Shiho is a werewolf (we’ll get into her more later) and Mikan, while 100% human has a pair of possessed glasses that can talk. Their principal as well is a devil girl who’s lived for centuries, yet looks like a 14 year-old girl with pink hair and is addicted to candy. The preposterous nature of the show only enhances the comedic situations the characters get into over time.

Youko Shiragami
Youko Shiragami

Youko is the main love interest of the male protagonist, Asahi. Is understandable for him to be interested in this lovely green-haired vampire. She super-nice, super-cheerful, just fun to be around. But for Asahi there’s a catch: she’s a bit of an airhead when it comes to Asahi being into her. It’s a interesting flipping of the roles here, usually in harem anime it’s the male protagonist who has no idea that all the girls are trying to gain his affection, but in this anime it’s arguably Asahi’s only real love interest in Youko that has no idea what’s actually going on. If she wasn’t an airhead on the topic, this anime would simply be a 12-episode love story. Instead, this allows a couple other girls drop their names in the hat for his affection, though again it’s arguable that it ever matters. Either way, Youko is a very enjoyable character in the series, one that’s hard not to like. And she ain’t have bad when she wears an actual sexy swimsuit. I wanted to have a picture of what Youko wears as a “swimsuit” in the sexiness contest against Akane, but I can’t find any pictures of the entire contest that isn’t Shiho! *sadface*

Nagisa Aizawa
Nagisa Aizawa

It’s interesting to the story when Nagisa is actually Asahi’s initial love interest, but she shot him down immediately and pretty harshly in fact. Which makes it easier for me, as Nagisa is easily my favourite of the girls in this series. I discussed it a little bit already in my Top 10 Anime Girls I’d Marry list, but she is a wonderful girl to be around (when she’s not trying to erase your memories with a “Memory Erasure Apparatus” aka, a hammer), she’s adorable, a little shy, yet can be a bit on the crazy side, which I enjoy. What can I say, I like a little bit of crazy. I find out of all them, my eyes gravitate towards Nagisa. She’s not a sexual deviant like Shiho, just trying to draw your attention to her cleavage. She’s not too prettied up like Youko is and she’s just a tad bit cuter than Mikan. Both of them are just plain pretty, but Nagisa edges her out. You just have to hope that this life-sized robot version of her is built for human contact as well, otherwise a loving relationship with an alien smaller than a pencil is gonna be a little on the tough side.

Mikan Akemi
Mikan Akemi

Mikan is the most interesting story-wise when it comes to Asahi’s affection, because she’s the only one really fighting her feelings by the very end. Youko’s slowly catching on, Nagisa’s accepting that she actually does have feels for him, but Mikan has always liked Asahi, yet she struggles to let go of those feelings, as she seemingly prefers him as childhood friends like they’ve always been. She can be a real pain in the ass at times, though that’s mostly her way of keeping around Asahi, since she can’t seem to just normally approach him and talk with him, so she becomes a thorn in his side just to stay around. It gets to the point that the glasses nearly forces her to state her love for him before Nagisa takes the glasses and ends up being the one to say it. It’s a rather interesting case where you have a girl who’s always loved the male protagonist, but arguably she sees that there are better matches for him, so she tries to let him go, but she can’t. And the anime does a really good job with her towards the end.

Shiho Shishido
Shiho Shishido

The clear sexual relief of the show, I never really like Shiho except for her introduction, that was hilarious. But in terms of her looks, I don’t know, it never clicked for me at all. Maybe the overly sexy girl look just doesn’t fit within the confines of the series. Like a said, she’s a werewolf, except there’s a catch with this one. She doesn’t transform into an actual werewolf, she just transforms into a white-haired boy with sharp teeth. And she doesn’t even need the real moon to change apparently, a picture will do. It made her introduction hilarious, it’s probably one of my favourite scenes from the entire series, so it’s a real shame when her character really offers nothing more than a pair of big tits and constantly trying to undress the other girls.

The best thing about this show

The real charm with this series however is the art style, especially when it comes to facial expressions. Jitsu wa Watashi wa is the king of the cheesy anime facial expressions. Especially when it comes to anything having to do with fear. It makes any comedic moment double as funny, it makes any weird moment double as weird and it makes any other emotional moment double as well. Actually seeing some images of the manga really makes me happy, as the anime manages to be almost just as intense. I’ve always been a big fan of crazy, over the top expressions in anime and this one is great for just that.

Nagisa revealing she’s a tiny alien to Youko & Asahi

If you’re looking for a fun romantic comedy, this might be up your alley, if you can handle a few curveballs. The anime is a bit on the insane side, but also houses a pretty accurate depiction of a love triangle, particularly between Asahi and Youko/Nagisa. You should definitely check this out, it’s such a good show. And it’s just so damn cute too!

“Three times!” …Love this opening song. So catchy!

Top 10 Anime Girls I’d Marry

A couple weeks ago I had the difficult decision to pick the Top 10 girls in all of anime that I’d list for a one-night stand. That was all fun and games, but now it’s time to get serious! These ten have to be more than a pretty face and body, they have to also have the personality that would work with me and the feeling that I’d want more than to just hang out with them. Also it helps that they aren’t likely to kill me or hurt me pretty badly…

As usual this is my own list taking into account my own preferences, so my list will be way different than yours. And there’s always characters I’ve never heard of or haven’t watched so I don’t know them inside and out. And because some characters may have difficulty applying to real life (cause, y’know…it’s anime), there’ll be a couple characters I adjust slightly to work with this situation.

Anyways, let’s get to it!

My first anime crush, Cagalli has been etched into my psyche for a long time now. The downside to that is there’s been plenty of time to take her further and further down the totem pole. However she’s still leaps and bounds more interesting than the majority of anime girls out there, she’s a tough girl with a tiny bit of a laid back personality when she’s not fighting for her life. She of course gets extra points being a tomboy, something that always works well with me. Man…I still can remember that sequence in Gundam Seed with her and Athrun on that deserted island as if I watched it yesterday.

Lynette’s an absolute freaking sweetheart, she’s awesome. She’s also got that shy side of her as well that’s really cute. A huge plus for me is she’s a pretty good cook (I’m god awful in the kitchen right now), so it would certainly be nice to have someone directing me rather than leaving me to burn the house down. I suppose her being in an alternate WWII-era anime requires some change to bring her into the present day, but given her look and attitude, I don’t see that being an issue.

Right off the bat, yes I know she’s a tiny alien inside an AI unit designed exactly like her in human size. So let’s just assume the AI unit is the actual human body for this. Nagisa is a crazy mixture all over, she can be that adorable girl, but she’s also so unpredictable and a little crazy, which can be fun (when she’s not holding a Memory Erasure Apparatus, I mean…hammer…) as well. Not to mention the blue hair/green eyes combination looks fantastic on her. One of my favourite girls from this year’s worth of anime.

I seem to like a lot of girls in sci-fi kind of anime, the third character of the first four so far that has something to do with outer space. I’m not even convinced I’d need to take away Marika’s space pirate work, she doesn’t seem to let it change her to the point of the stereotypical rum-drinking, cursing, violent pirate. Instead she’s an absolute sweetheart, very fun loving and let’s be honest here, she’s gorgeous. I don’t think even in full pirate getup and holding a gun right to my head, I still wouldn’t think in the back of my head “Damn she’s pretty…”.

Granted, this character is inside a video game, so we can safely assume the role of the character’s self in the real world, Shizuka Hanekura. Specifically in Log Horizon, Akatsuki is easily the cutest assassin I’ve ever seen in any form of media. She has to be when one of the side characters tries to dress her up in pretty clothes and hugs the shit out of her every time she comes across her. Personality-wise, I really don’t pay much attention to her “my lord” portion, other than the fact you know she’s loyal to you once you’ve earned her respect. Otherwise, she is clearly very shy and reserved, looking even more adorable when doing so. I just hope Akatsuki is the only part of Shizuka that’s swung a sharp object.

Looking at the rest of this list, I can safely say we’re away from all the outer space ladies, but something will remain consistent for almost the entire Top 5: tomboys. Makoto is the tomboyish character in Idolmaster that wants to be a girly pop idol like everyone else, but her tomboyish figure for the most part prevents that, everyone prefers to dress her more like a guy. Honestly, I could go either way, she looks really good in her more masculine clothes such as the tanktop and shorts she’s wearing in the picture above. But I’d have zero issues with her in a cute top, skirt and thigh high socks if that’s what she wants to do. She’s pretty enough that she can pull off both sides.

It’s crazy that in an anime/visual novel where there’s so many to choose from, especially ones designed to be perfect (Nerine, Lisianthus, Kareha, etc.), Asa’s the one I’d pick by not just a small margin, but by a landslide. This green-haired sporty tomboy is fucking awesome, she really gives off that best friend in the entire world attitude. But she also backs up her awesome personality with pure beauty, past the joking and stuff she is an absolutely beautiful girl and is very adorable when you get close enough to her to unlock that part of her personality. Though the denim shorts cut into bikini bottoms still baffles me. Tomboy, I guess.

Rikka’s probably the closest character in terms of her overall looks and personality to my actual real-life girlfriend and before you even think it, no, my girlfriend is 27 like me. Minus the acting like she’s still an anime heroine, Rikka is easily the cutest of all the girls on this list in terms of personality. She’s very over-exaggerating with her emotions, whether she shows that by her facial expressions, or waving her hands about (my girlfriend does this a lot when she speaks). She’s totally adorable, you just want to give her the biggest hug ever. I imagine once she’s grown up a little more, probably after high school, she’s the perfect mixture of a young adult who still has a little bit of their inner child out there.

I said so many good things about Charlotte in my Top 10 Infinite Stratos Girls list, but she just misses the #1 spot. But it’s no easy feat to get #2 and Charlotte works hard to do that. She’s one of very few blonde-haired characters that’s really gotten my attention, it helps that she dressed like a guy for half the first season and has a curious mixture of a tomboy, but seems to lean to a more girly side once her real gender is discovered. And then there’s that French accent of her, which is sexy as fuck. She really gives off that sweet girl feeling, the kind of girl you’d want to take out to a nice dinner to, not just a movie or something trivial like that. You think she’s worth the effort, as certainly do I.

But if Charlotte, the girl I’ve been talking endlessly about these past couple weeks isn’t #1, who is? Well…

I don’t even want to remove her cat ears and tail, fuck it, have nekojin exist in our world for this, it only adds to how beautiful this woman is. The first time I saw Kuon in Episode 1 of Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen, I thought she was really cute, but wasn’t sure how I’d feel about her personality. Generally speaking, characters that look like how she does can often be a little hyper, or too overly cute. But by the end of Episode 1 after watching how this woman acts, the only thought coming to my head was “Holy shit, if this girl was real…”, though of course I am in a great 8-year relationship, I’m not the kind of terrible guy who’d drop a girl just because he came across a prettier one who’s into him. Putting all that aside though, there’s no denying the perfection that is Kuon. She’s one of the prettiest girls in any fictional media I’ve ever come across and may just have the best personality out of all of them. She’s sweet, she’s loving, she’s caring, she’s funny, she’s adorable and she has no problem getting serious when she has to. She’s the total package and easily the #1 candidate for an anime marriage if one could ever exist.

Hope you enjoyed the list, once again I had a blast/hard time making this one up. If you’ve got your own opinions, especially involving characters I didn’t even mention, don’t hesitate to share them in the comments below!
