Mortal Kombat: Dismemberment? Okay. Skin? Bad.

I love the Mortal Kombat series. I have loved it since the very beginning, tried to enjoy the series as much as I could during the 3D days and then continued to love it again once the complete overhaul that was Mortal Kombat (technically MK9) on the 360 and PS3.

But since the past game Mortal Kombat X and now with the reveals of the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11, I’ve been noticing something that I don’t quite like, nor do I understand. It’s not a deal breaker necessarily, as when it comes to the game, I’m more concerned about the mechanics and the gore, because that’s what the game is supposed to be, but there’s one thing that they’ve changed recently that seems way too coinciding with the current political climate.

So look, I’m just going to say it flat out. I am 100% in favor of what Mortal Kombat used to have with specifically its female cast. Yes, I’m talking about the overly sexual outfits.

I should’ve noticed this change right away when for the first time EVER, Mileena’s outfit was very conservative. Anyone who’s played the series before the MK9 comeback knows that Mileena has always been the sex symbol of the franchise, which is pretty ironic given she has the ugliest face in the game, aside from Baraka.

But in MKX, she shows so little skin in comparison to every game before that, in retrospect it’s shocking I didn’t really pay attention to it when I first played the series. She no longer has the one-piece “ninja” outfit that has several other characters wearing similar if not the same gear with a different color palette. Those girls included Kitana, Jade, Frost, Khameleon, Tanya and even Skarlet, who at one point was a glitched red colorization before becoming a real character in the series.

And now in the past game and the soon to be released MK11, all of these girls have been changed significantly to alter their outfits in order to show less skin, while several male characters have largely remained the same. Hell, the new male character Geras? Shirtless.

Now I’m not going to sit here and tell you that the outfits that we’ve seen characters like Jade, Sonya and other female characters aren’t cool, I will never do that. But why all of a sudden are outfits that are 10, 20, some almost 25 years old now, being completely erased? In a genre that sees characters have several different outfits, why does it appear that the ones that your average third-wave feminist would immediately scream at, they’re the only outfits truly affected?

I mean take a look at Skarlet for example, hence why she’s the cover image for this article. This is what she first looked like in the 2011 redesign. Is it over-the-top? Sure, but this is Mortal fucking Kombat we’re talking about here. This isn’t a “realistic” game, nor is it a realistic world. But now, in MK11? She looks like she’s preparing for a winter storm, not a fight. And another thing, REALLY?! YOU GAVE HER A PIXIE CUT AND YOU THOUGHT THAT LOOKED GOOD?! SHE LOOKS TERRIBLE!!! Skarlet looks more masculine than feminine now, are we seriously going to start playing that game?

I’m not saying every character needs to be sexy, don’t get the wrong idea here. But why are characters that have always been sexy suddenly not sexy? Is the solution not to make new characters that aren’t automatically fan service characters? Isn’t that what D’Vorah is? Cassie Cage and Jacqui Briggs? You are laying down a foundation of new characters, so if you want to make characters who aren’t revealing 75%+ of their skin, you can do that. But don’t erase the characters you had, Skarlet was fine as a sexy, powerful assassin, same with Kitana, Jade and especially Mileena, who I’m pretty sure at this point got killed off in MKX so they could show to the world they’ve “changed”, by taking out the most sexualized woman they had.

So this all goes back to the leftist, feminist approach of we can’t sexualize women in video games. So once again I will say it, why the fuck not?! This isn’t a realistic, present day game, this is a game that features several different realms with ridiculously over-the-top fantasy setting characters, such as an undead ninja, a man who controls ice, a sorcerer who takes people’s souls, several characters with more than two arms, a minotaur, a man with bionic arms, a motherfucking dragon, you get the idea, right?

This isn’t real, who are you to say that this world doesn’t have a different cultural and societal approach? How do you know wearing clothes akin to a one-piece swimsuit isn’t normal battle attire for women in that world? How do you know that women don’t normally wear more revealing clothing because perhaps their world is hotter than ours normally is, or hell, maybe that’s just their fucking choice? That’s my favorite counter argument, how do you know that this world wouldn’t be one that’s different from ours, with characters who think different than we do? Why does everything today have to be 100% reminiscent of our present day?

I don’t want to play something 100% realistic, that’s boring as shit, I want to play a game where I’m playing as ridiculous characters, doing ridiculous fighting moves and pulling off ridiculous kills like the fatalities have always done, ramping it up each and every installment.

I want these characters to be over-the-top in every way. I want 9-foot tall giants with four arms who can rip a normal person’s limb off with ease. I want shirtless karate legends with abs on top of abs pulling off absurd fighting moves that even Jean Claude van Damme couldn’t even pull off. I want to see scantily clad women who look like strippers, but can kick anyone’s ass at the drop of a hat, in the same way I want to see women who are also dressed conservatively and can pull off the same thing. Or maybe they can do other things like they’re mages/sorceresses, they’re a medieval looking knight with a giant Claymore sword, anything that can make sense of things.

But a girl who just fights with a Sai and martial arts, like Mileena? There’s no reason for her to cover up as much as she can, she needs the extra speed and agility, to be able to move faster and be able to make that critical shot. It’s harder to do that when you have more clothing pulling on you. I’m not saying she HAS to fight in a thong, but why can’t she? Because it could offend women? Well the game for almost 30 years has gone strong being a game that has a primary demographic of men aged 13-35, so why change now?

Can we stop making changes to please everyone? Because we never can. Make the game that suits your primary demographic first, that’s where the money is. And for fuck’s sake, Netherrealm, you have been making a series of fighting games that politicians have always been against because of the violence, why are you even bothering changing anything at this point? Nothing you do will change what you are now with this series.

Want to make a game for everyone? Start a new franchise. Oh that’s a risk and you might lose money doing so? Then what are you doing right now by changing so much about the characters? Isn’t that a risk to the fanbase you’ve collected for decades now? Ask EA, Bethesda and Blizzard, they’ll tell you a few stories.

Once again, I’m not saying every character has to be sexualized. But in a world where limbs are lying everywhere and there’s more blood than an Olympic swimming pool can hold, how ridiculous is a couple of girls with DDs in a skimpy one-piece?

Character Spotlight: Mileena

Originally, she was just a palette-swap character with the blue female ninja Kitana. But then a crazy idea came along. Co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, John Tobias said the following about the creation of Mileena:

“I took advantage of Kitana and Mileena being masked sisters to make a play on the veil myth… One sister is beautiful. One is ugly. One is good. One is evil. Choose wisely before asking one on a date.”

Little did we know just how true that statement would be.

maxresdefault

It all looks fine at first glance, does it not? She’s very much like her “sister”, Kitana. She’s absolutely stunning, she has the same long, black hair Kitana has, albeit she lets it all down while Kitana often has her hair tied up. Realistically, Mileena is a slightly more voluptuous version of Kitana, she has a little more of a bust and tends to be a little more scantily dressed.

But of course, under that mask is a much different story.

maxresdefault

Originally, Mileena was just another Tarkatan warrior, a race of hideous creatures that in the old Mortal Kombat lore were a mix of the human race of the Outworld realm and a demonic race from the Netherrealm. In the new canon since the Mortal Kombat reboot, it was said in a conversation between Baraka and D’Vorah that the Tarkatans were just a race conquered by Shao Kahn, keeping things simpler, I suppose.

Mileena was meant to be a replacement for Princess Kitana, who Shao Kahn adopted after taking over Edenia. While Kitana knew nothing of this initially, Shao Kahn decided to have a backup plan if she ever rebelled against him, so a cloning project began, Mileena was the intended subject to be fully cloned to look exactly like Kitana and replace her if need be. However, the process failed, leaving her face disfigured with the Tarkatan trait with the giant mouth with jagged-teeth. Hence the mask to hide this.

Ironically, Mileena has been used in large part as the sex symbol of the series, not that the majority of female characters in the game aren’t dressed sexually or anything. But out of them all, there’s no question Mileena has been the primary source of the sexy artwork that’s come out over the years. Her two most infamous moments of this are her Mortal Kombat: Deception artwork (here) and her alternate outfit in the Mortal Kombat reboot (here).

I kind of enjoy that of all people, this is the one the creators intentionally chose for such promotional artwork and costumes. They could’ve easily had Sonya or Kitana as their picks for such a thing and have them become their Cammy White or Mai Shiranui. But instead they went with the funniest option at the time, let’s give all the MK players who are attracted to women the most confusing boner in the world. It’s hilarious!

Mortal-Kombat-X-renders-5-1280x720

In terms of her fighting style, I like using her once in a while, though not one of my favourites by any means. She’s a faster, short-range character which can be very strong if you’re good at combos (I’m not at all). But it’s mostly her visceral style and especially her X-Rays and fatalities that I love about her. Her Mortal Kombat X fatality where she literally claws you in half is just so disturbingly awesome.

It’s a real shame though that we might not be seeing her again now in the MK universe as she’s killed off in Mortal Kombat X by D’Vorah. However if people remember her original story, she was killed in Mortal Kombat II and brought back to life the following game. So it’s very possible she’ll return soon enough. I honestly can’t see the series without her, she’s become a mainstay of it and one of the most recognizable next to guys like Liu Kang, Raiden and of course Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Mileena’s a great example of what happens when creators decide to go a little bit in the other direction. At first glance, Mileena looks just like another video game trope with women, a sexy woman who’s literally just eye candy. But when the mask comes off and she really turns into the demonic monster she is, Mileena is not a sexy woman at all, she’s a stone cold killer and one ugly face! There’s nothing sexy about her at all, everything she shows you is a farce.

Because let’s be honest, even if she let you have a night with her (don’t ask for oral, of course), you ain’t leaving alive.

Game Spotlight: Mortal Kombat IX

Mortal+Kombat+GameSpy+Migration

My experiences with Mortal Kombat have always been a rocky road. While I did play the original at a friend’s house, the first game I owned and consistently played was Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for the SNES and it was fantastic.

And then all the 3D ones came out…

Mortal Kombat 4 was okay, however Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon, they were all bad games overall, a few good things about each, but the overall fighting wasn’t as good as the originals were. So after everyone was left disappointed from the following release of Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, it was time for a change.

And boy did we ever get one!

01

We were back to the 2D style of fighting gameplay, while retaining the upgraded graphics of that current generation. We had gone back to basics, but at the same time evolved. Gone was the tedious 3D fighting system and in return we got the original fighting mechanics that made the series legendary, y’know…aside from all the blood and gore. The game also added in a new addition, X-Ray attacks. These were absolutely brutal additions to the fighting series, essentially a fatality without killing the opponent and it could be easily pulled off, unlike fatalities which require you to remember a combination of inputs, which I constantly fuck up. So the series was back at full strength and had even more added into it.

01

My favourite part of this game though was the new story mode the game contained, wrapping the “plots” of the first three games of the series into one cohesive plot. For someone who was so interested in the series, but didn’t really understand the story because it required me to beat the game many times with various characters (and I suck at fighting games), this was huge for me, it allowed me the chance to properly understand the narrative of the story of this illustrious franchise by participating, rather than reading a long-ass Wikipedia plot summary.

The story mode also makes several changes to the Mortal Kombat timeline which are very interesting. The idea of Kung Lao being killed far earlier, Sub-Zero being the new Cyber recruit rather than Smoke and many others really let the fanbase know that this series is going through a changing period and a good one at that. Of course, the end of this story really opens your eyes to the reality that this series is not going to be going through the motions again, everything from here on out would be different, as Mortal Kombat X would later prove to us.

01

Of course, the most notable part about the redo of Mortal Kombat was that the traditional fatality system was back after Armageddon’s absolutely stupid “Create-A-Fatality” concept they had. And with the new graphics, the fatalities only got cooler and grosser, just take a look at how Mortal Kombat X made them even better after only a couple years! Notable ones like Kung Lao’s pull through his spinning hat, Noob Saibot’s “wishbone” body pull apart, and Sheeva literally pulling the skin off her opponent were proof that if you didn’t get it yet, you knew the original and good parts of the series were back in full force, without anyone holding back.

Mortal Kombat’s reboot was one of the most necessary and needed reboots at the time it came out and thank god it was released in the state it was. To have a game that bridged new fans into the old and brought the old fans back into the newest games of the series is a tough task to take on and the team at Netherrealm Studios were up to the task and completely it successfully with flying colours. And after the also solid release of Mortal Kombat X, which brought for the first time children of past characters into the game, it’s so refreshing to see the game moving forward instead of taking two steps back as they did with the PS2-era games.

I’m curious though if any of those characters will return as well. I’d love to see characters like Kira, Motaro, Nitara and Onaga somehow brought back in, but under the much better written narrative of this new Mortal Kombat storyline.

This Week in Sexy Games: Mortal Kombat

Mileena
Mileena

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Mortal Kombat. A fighting game series synonymous with all the blood, gore and extreme violence you can handle. Want to watch a guy burned alive? Mortal Kombat! Want to watch a guy get his head and spinal cord ripped out of his body? Mortal Kombat! Want to watch a girl cut open her enemy combatant and sexily bath herself in the victim’s blood? Yeah…Mortal Kombat’s got you covered!

But violence isn’t the only thing the series offers. It offers quite a number of beautiful and downright gorgeous women.

Sonya Blade
Sonya Blade

The original sexy lady of Mortal Kombat, Sonya’s had a long and illustrious history being at the top of many gamers’ lists of the sexiest women in video games of all time. Personally, I never saw a whole lot in her, not saying she isn’t sexy because she is, however compared to some of the other women in the series, she doesn’t have the same staying power for me.

Kitana
Kitana

Kitana on the other hand is a knockout for me. Once the series really regained its stride in 2011 with the Mortal Kombat reboot, this princess cemented her place near the top of the list amongst the entire female cast. She’s very easy on the eyes, not overly muscular and has a certain elegance to her. After all, she is a princess.

Mileena (again)
Mileena (again)

Can you imagine where she’d be on the all-time list if she did have the Tarkatan mouth? I’m willing to bet she’d be top 5 all-time. But Mileena indeed without the mask covering her mouth is a monstrous sight. Which makes it even harder for your brain to cope with when she puts the mask back on and looks like the sexiest woman that ever existed. Often used as the sex symbol of the series in most of the marketing material, she’s definitely got a grasp on that role. Just wish she’d have a human face…

Jade
Jade

Along with Kitana, Jade shares the top echelon of the Mortal Kombat series in terms of sexy ladies, though Jade admittedly has an unfair advantage given her weapon and how she flaunts her body around with it. Yes, her weapon is a staff and yes she sometimes uses it like a stripper pole. Also she got a bit darker skin, which is a bit of a plus for me. Beautiful.

Sindel
Sindel

Yeah yeah, she’s got big tits and a big ass in tight, skimpy clothes. She’s pretty much Mortal Kombat’s equivalent of Ivy Valentine from the Soul series. Moving on!

Sheeva
Sheeva

Yeah, no. I don’t care how sexy you make her, I ain’t getting near Sheeva. No matter how you look at it, that strength is gonna hurt you somewhere down the line. *shudders*

Tanya
Tanya

Tanya was always a resounding meh with me. Never really liked the look or her outfits. And by the point she debuted, you really have to set yourself apart from the pack to gain my attention.

Frost
Frost

A sexy female version of Sub-Zero?! Sign me the fuck up! I didn’t really get too into Frost right off the bat, but over the years I’ve…warmed up to her? Anyways, the short hair’s a big part of it, I really do like girls with short hair. And again, she’s not overly sexy or muscular, she manages to find that middle ground.

Li Mei
Li Mei

Probably my favourite looking female in the entire series, which is a shame for Li Mei given she pretty much is only available in the worst of the Mortal Kombat games. But there’s a certain charm to her, she comes off like a sexy tomboy. The hair and headgear adds onto it, again it’s something far different than the rest of the cast. Best of all, she’s got a ton of cleavage, but isn’t packing giant breasts like some of the other girls.

Nitara
Nitara

I totally forgot about Nitara until I made this list. Apparently so has everyone else, finding a good quality picture of her was a pain in the ass. This vampire was all right, but again suffers from being a part of the bad era of Mortal Kombat games. She probably has the best hairstyle of the series though.

Sareena
Sareena

And just under Nitara for best hair is Sareena. We don’t see much of her in the series, but damn is she ever pretty. She’s got that gothic look to her, which I don’t care what anyone else says, that’s sexy as fuck to me! And again, no giant breasts, double bonus!

Ashrah
Ashrah

Female version of Raiden, meh. Ashrah doesn’t do a thing for me, honestly.

Kira
Kira

So I forgot just how hot Kira is. Damn, she might be ahead of Li Mei. I do love redheads after all. And that outfit she has is so damn good, it matches her perfectly. Yeah…yeah! She’s #1 for me. Decided!

Skarlet
Skarlet

Okay okay okay! She’s hot, there’s no doubting that. But when a kink of hers is bathing in blood…I’m out! Sorry, you’re gorgeous, red hair, sexy body, you got it all Skarlet, but I’m out! I’ll take my chances elsewhere.

Cassie Cage
Cassie Cage

Cassie’s not too shabby, though she comes off quite bitchy to me. Also not heavy into blondes and she falls into that realm of blonde-haired girls that don’t really do much for me. Obviously she’s hot in that skin-tight armor, but I don’t know, it’s not doing anything for me.

Jacqui Briggs
Jacqui Briggs

Jacqui’s pretty good looking, nice body, darker skin, though I could do without the hairstyle, never been a fan of anything braided or cornrows (I’m not a hair expert here). Otherwise, she’s all right.

D'Vorah
D’Vorah

Sweet Jesus! I’d pick Sheeva over her. And I actually love playing as D’Vorah as well as her character. But look at her! Just…ugh! Not only that, but did you see what happens when she kisses people (NO SPOILERS HERE, LA LA LA LA LA!!!)?! Yeah, no thanks!

Sheesh, that was a lot of girls, I forgot how many there were in the entire series, 17 in total! And it’s safe to say, for the most part (other than really D’Vorah and Sheeva), they’re all hot, some just more than others. It’s a wonderful addition to a game that sells solely on its violence. So put that together and what do you got? That’s right, SEXY MOTHERFUCKING VIOLENCE!

Top 10 Fighting Games

I love fighting games. I’m shit at them, but I love ’em! So this week’s top 10 is going to be all about fighters!

Now the rules are very simple. Since I’d have several Guilty Gear games on this list, it’ll be one game per franchise. That is all, so let’s get crackin’!

10

When you take the solid battle system of the recent Mortal Kombat reboot and apply it to the DC universe, you’ve already got a lot of people paying very close attention to what you’ve got. But a phenomenally good story mode, a vast list of playable characters are also contained in this game?! Yeah, you’ve got a solid effort there. And it’s probably the closest you’ll ever get to a good superhero fighting game to rival the Marvel vs Capcom series.

09

You can tell I haven’t played a lot of King of Fighters games when Maximum Impact is not far off the list of KoF games I would’ve picked. But ’98 is a solid game, for as much as I remember of it. I can tell you right away who I fought with all the time, either Iori, Ryo, or Mai (of course). The King of Fighters series is probably one I should take a look at again, I remember watching the newest one being played at Evo at it looked fantastic, so I’ve definitely gotta get into that.

08

I tried to find a decent picture of the logo, but this is the best I could come up with, shocking isn’t it? Aside from that, I really enjoyed Dead or Alive 2, long before I was really aware of the over-sexualization of the girls (not that I wasn’t looking then). I don’t think I ever played the original version, but rather the version that came in Dead or Alive Ultimate on the original Xbox. While people love to slut shame the Dead or Alive series, you can’t deny just how solid the gameplay is. But I will admit, I totally played schoolgirl Ayane, whipping everyone’s asses.

07

As awesome as this game still is, fuck this game! I’m so bad at this game that to this very day I still haven’t beaten Shao Kahn, 100% truth. Holy fuck this game kicks my ass and I know it’s not that hard! Anyways, tremendous roster, probably the best roster the series ever had (if you don’t count Mortal Kombat Trilogy or Armageddon) and one of the most memorable old-school fighting games out there. But still…fuck you Shao Kahn!

06

You know a game must be really good when it’s had two more iterations since, both super good, but when it comes to major eSports tournaments related to the Super Smash Bros franchise, they still pick Melee above the others. And for good reason, this game is easily the best SSB game there is. It pains me to admit that, cause there’s so many characters I wouldn’t be able to play, but it’s that good. Another game I wasn’t super good at (cause I’m a game behind before I can be a dick with Sonic), but no matter how badly I’d get my ass kicked, it was fun playing with friends. And it still is.

05

I want to put this game so much higher cause that’s how much I love the Persona series right now. But alas the #5 spot is the spot for this game. A bigger roster than the previous game, adding in the remaining Persona 3 characters that didn’t appear the first time, though the addition of Rise as a fighter was not very welcome from me, she never fought once before this game. But anything made by Arc System Works is fucking fantastic and when you mix that with my favourite series right now, you’ve got a match made in heaven. It looks great, plays great and the story mode is super good, if you can handle visual novels of course.

04

Okay, okay, okay, okay! I know what you’re thinking. Adam! Why the fuck didn’t you pick Soul Calibur II?! FUCKING LINK, MAN!!! And I get it, I understand. But the third game introduced Tira and I’m sorry, but no fairy boy is going to trump the crazy blue-haired ring blade toting crazy bitch who I am totally not be biased about whatsoever. But I do honestly feel like this game improved upon the already solid Soul Calibur II and made it even better. I love this game Tira!

03

A legendary game with a legendary roster. You may never in video games find a more varied, all over the place level of roster with some of the best names in the Marvel universe and some of the best names in all of Capcom’s library. And you take this crazy large roster, give them all very balanced and cool movesets and the gameplay is super solid?! Sweet mother of mystery, give us a chance to collect our jaws up off the floor! This is one of those games that will life on in infamy for a long time, given what it represents in the fighting game chronicles of history. Because being able to kick Hulk’s ass with B.B. Hood is hilarious.

02

The sheer number of times I played this game as a kid on my Super Nintendo, holy shit. It’s also the first fighting game I actually managed to beat the final boss in and that’s a big deal to me. You wanna talk about legendary games from the past, this is THE legendary old-school fighting game. Kicked a lot of ass with Cammy (while she showed hers off) and thought nothing of T.Hawk’s stereotypical character. Also slapped the shit out of people as E.Honda. Fuck yeah!

01

I will fully admit there is clear bias with this game. It’s not the best fighting game by any means, but it’s easily my favourite. It’s got my favourite art style, my favourite soundtrack and for fuck’s sake you can play as a tiny Japanese girl who fights with an anchor and summons dolphins out of nowhere and fight a large-breasted woman who fights with a guitar, all this while heavy metal is blasting in the background. That’s something you can do in Guilty Gear, you tell me what about that isn’t awesome?! That’s right, you can’t think of a good reason! So that’s why Guilty Gear is my #1 fighting game of all-time.

Heaven or hell…LET’S ROCK!!!
