Week #8 – Spring Anime 2017

Week #8 has arrived with this Spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

Huh…well my worries were certainly on the money, weren’t they? Now look, I’m not necessarily upset with this episode, but it’s something that happens in a lot of comedy anime series that really drives me crazy. I cannot stand a half-season of pure comedy gold that suddenly turns into a dark, bloody, depressing series in the second half.  Re=L’s betrayal doesn’t come as too big a surprise, given Albert’s warnings, but the violence against Glenn and Rumia really change the entire landscape of the show now and as someone who’s been comfortable with the series thus far, it’s a hard change to accept. There’s almost an expectation to keep the status quo and this show has completely gone in a different direction now. Hopefully it doesn’t get so bad that it doesn’t pull a Big Order.

THE GOOD

  • The shock value was certainly there in this episode
  • Re=L’s character continues to be interesting one way or another

THE BAD

  • The lack of explanation to what just happened does not help the viewers from overcoming the shock of it all
  • I worry about this drastic change in the show’s style

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Eromanga-sensei (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

This was a really good episode, full of comedy, moe and just interesting dialogue. The relationships between Masamune and Sagiri have ramped up again, same with Muramasa. Personally, I’m still on Team Elf, but hey, we’re making progress, who gives a shit right now, eh? I didn’t like how they just brought in Shidou without any real introduction, he just appears and may not even exist after this episode anyways. After all, we can’t have any other guys in our harem, right? Either way, there was a lot to like in this episode, Sagiri’s house security check was adorable, Muramasa being all flustered was fun, including the reaction from their agent. The party had its moments too, so there was a lot to love this week.

Also, how about that Oreimo cameo, eh?

THE GOOD

  • Really good comedy and relationships being pushed forward
  • Sagiri, Elf and Muramasa all have been pushed forward in their character development, which is fantastic for this harem

THE BAD

  • DEAD. FUCKING. PARENTS!!!

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Granblue Fantasy (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

Wow. This episode could not have been better. It was so silly, over-the-top and fun action with two new characters that are impossible not to fall in love with. This is everything I can ask in an anime, it was funny, it was cute, it had good action and no one’s parents died. What else could I possibly ask for? Even beyond that, we’ve got progress with all of this fun, Gran’s got a legendary sword it seems. But in reality, it’s Marie and Karva that sell me on this show now, please tell me they stick around, please please please please please!!!

THE GOOD

  • Karva and Marie in the first minute of this episode may have already won the best pair award for this season, even if they never appear again, which they better not!
  • The episode was so lighthearted and fun, I’ve been needing a really good one lately and here it is!
  • The slam dunk bomb, I love it!

THE BAD

  • Not a damn thing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Hinako Note (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

Another episode that brought me back in, this episode was pure fun and adorable as all hell to watch. The constant barrage of stupidity from the girls as they tried to cure Hinako’s cold, especially Kuina and Yua were just so funny to watch. I’m a little disappointed though that we’re at Episode 8 and it looks like Hinako’s still flipping back to her full-scarecrow side, even though we’ve been led to believe she’s gotten better.

THE GOOD

  • I was dying of laughter during the constant trying to cure Hinako with random shit scene
  • Comedy and moe at their best this week

THE BAD

  • Hinako’s still over-the-top nervous, it almost feels like she’s made zero progress

Episode Score: 4.5/5

KADO: The Right Answer (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

***IF ANYTHING HAPPENED IN EPISODE 6.5 BEYOND A HALFWAY POINT SUMMARY, I MISSED IT***

It’s nice that due to the 6.5 episode, I’m actually caught up to Kado’s simulcast now. The sci-fi insanity has really been turned up now, with the ideology of us existing in multiple dimension. So comic book multiverse theory is a reality here. This is how they explain the no-sleep mechanic from last week, you can have another you in an other dimension sleep for you while the one in this universe doesn’t have to anymore, yet experiences the same effects of having slept. Yaha-kui zaShunina this time wants the media, specifically our trio of journalists to spread the Sansa, this new piece offered to help humans understand the anisotropic and the ability not to sleep. A lot of the positive and negative reasons they bring up to match my What If? article about the prospect of never having to sleep. To end it off, now it’s getting a little interesting with Saraka telling Koujirou she wants to send Yaha-kui zaShunina back where he came from. Why? We’ll have to find out next week.

THE GOOD

  • Yaha-kui zaShunina in different clothes looking gorgeous, it was a fun scene
  • I was really interested in the positives/negatives spoken about the no-sleep concept, especially after writing about it

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

Any Kai-central episode is going to be a lot of fun to watch and it definitely lived up to those expectations. The sidestory with Adele and Shadow was also super adorable, not to mention the zoo trip that lead to a few jokes as well, including Licht getting hit on by a male ostrich. As far as I’m concerned, Kai out of the group seems to be the best fit as a king if he’s able to overcome his own flaws, his selflessness and strong heart really pushes him forward as a leader in my eyes. If he can get past his communication problems, he’s the best for the job if we’re being realistic here. We’ve got probably four episodes left, here’s hoping this villain story doesn’t get too crazy, which I was shocked how it wasn’t mentioned at all this week after being around the last two episodes.

THE GOOD

  • I will never stop loving Kai’s character, he brings out the best in everyone
  • The zoo brought out some very good jokes
  • Adele/Shadow made for a great sidestory

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Renai Boukun (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

A better episode than last week for sure, we got all the main players involved, though I still want just a little more out of Akua, she’s so much fun! Being able to push forward with a couple romances really helps and getting a little backstory on Akane and Yuzu’s parents helps as well. The comedy was much better this week as well, the jokes were hitting their marks almost as accurately as blades were hitting Guri’s head. This is the kind of episode that brought me to this show and hopefully it stays on this course, rather than being boring and depressing like last week’s episode was.

THE GOOD

  • The comedy was back in full form
  • Akane and Yuzu really brought out their game for this episode

THE BAD

  • The episode started a little slow, but once Akane’s mother entered the frame, things picked up

Episode Score: 4/5

Week #6 – Spring Anime 2017

Week #6 has arrived with this Spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Oh my god I am praying that Re=l is around more often as the series moves further. I’m shocked that the Queen didn’t get killed through all this, I thought with Japan loving dead parents as much as they do, it was a sure thing! The episode had a bit of everything, comedy, badassery, a little trickery even. Somehow though, no real ecchi in sight! The only criticism I have about this week’s episode is that I thought the reveal of him using his card to nullify the necklace was pulled out a little too late, there was too much time for things to make zero sense, so even with that reveal making sense of it, I had already settled in on the opinion of “She should be dead…?”.

THE GOOD

  • Any series that uses tarot cards to label their characters gets a thumbs up from me (giant Persona fan here)
  • Albert and Re=l being in the picture just make the show so much more fun, as if it needed any more already!

THE BAD

  • The reveals at the end of the conflict were a little haphazardly thrown in

Episode Score: 4/5

Eromanga-sensei (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Okay okay okay okay! Um…what the fuck is Muramasa’s problem?! I guess we’ll find out next week, won’t we, but still! The fuck, man! Anyways, speaking of what the fucks, um…Sagiri should be arrested. Like right now. She’s really racking up the sex crimes here. Serious jokes aside, it’s nice to see Megumi getting involved as well now, bringing our main cast to four, with Muramasa likely being the fifth to really pull things together. Tomoe might come in as well, but I’m getting the sense she’s a side character now. Also, I’m really impressed with the way they’re quietly pairing Masamune and Elf together, it’s coming off very naturally!

THE GOOD

  • Masamune/Elf is getting more and more interesting

THE BAD

  • I think adults were needed this week. Poor Megumi…
  • I know they’ll probably explain why next episode, but what the fuck is Muramasa’s problem?!

Episode Score: 4/5

Granblue Fantasy (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

So after a sixth episode, where do we stand? Personally, I’m a little frustrated, because while the adventure is fun, the story is either non-existent or confusing, depending on where you stand with it. I’m trying to figure out what’s going on and I can’t, but yet there’s so much to enjoy here that it’s hard to put it down. Sturm constantly stabbing her comrade is hilarious every single time, Vyrn’s voice alone makes me smile and then there’s Siero, oh my god I want to hug her so bad! But yeah, this episode was basically 20 minutes of pointless storytelling that went nowhere and ended with a terrible cliffhanger. So yeah. And Io’s kind of annoying…

THE GOOD

  • Every time I see Siero, I want to give her a giant hug. But I’d probably crush her.
  • I really want this anime to never stop having Sturm on screen, I love her!

THE BAD

  • The story is going nowhere as far as I can see it, it’s just a constant flurry of mysteries
  • Io’s really annoying with her constant “MASTER?!!!” callouts

Episode Score: 3/5

Hinako Note (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Another cute episode with cute girls doing cute things. Once it got to the play, I was a little out of it, since the comedy and cuteness really went out the window, but I did enjoy the many culinary escapades on Kuina and friends. Well, I mean…the kazoo music was fantastic! All in all, it was a fun episode, but like I’ve said before, the show just isn’t a wow-worthy show, it’s just a good show.

THE GOOD

  • Kuina when she’s hungry is at her best
  • The kazoo music just sold that scene so well

THE BAD

  • The play performance did end up boring me
  • I worry that as this show goes further, the best parts of Hinako, aka her shyness, will slowly go away

Episode Score: 3.5/5

KADO: The Right Answer (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

My my my, what a great ending to an episode filled with dialogue. This one wasn’t nearly as interesting for the first 15 minutes, minus any time we spend with Kanata, of course. But the idea that in the end, Japan does give into the United Nations, but then completely trolls them by showing the entire world how to make their own Wam, is such a great and hilarious decision. Because you know out of 196, all 196 would go to the six major powers and no one else. And World War III would begin. Because you know especially the United States, Russia and China would be doing everything in their power to have the most of them and ensure no one else gets them.

THE GOOD

  • Kanata on fire this episode
  • The ending was a great troll of the United Nations

THE BAD

  • First 15 minutes were not that interesting

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Once again, a fantastic show that never ceases to entertain me. The whole cafe set-up was a great way to really get us to enjoy the personality that Licht has when he’s not in his royal setting. Even further than that, having his father, the freaking king joining him as a waiter there, that was so funny to watch as he trumped his son in every possible way. However, I have one worry, this whole trying to take the throne story with Rosenberg. Again, I don’t want something to happen that breaks the show’s pace, so I have to be cautious with this now.

THE GOOD

  • Licht out of royal setting is very entertaining
  • His father is even more entertaining out of royal setting

THE BAD

  • I worry with Rosenberg added into this show and making a semi-conflict level of plot now

Episode Score: 4/5

Renai Boukun (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

I mean, I’ll be honest, the beach half of the episode is what really got me, especially the volleyball stuff, that was hilarious. We got a little more Akua finally, though still nowhere near enough to quench my thirst, I really want to see more of her. The haunted school portion of the show was still fantastic, mind you, all the references and horror tropes were so funny. The “story” is furthered as well, with Akane questioning Guri’s “love” for Seiji, given that she doesn’t really understand love still. They can have whatever story they want, just keep this comedy coming.

Oh and the winner of this week’s swimsuit episode? Of course it’s Akua!

THE GOOD

  • The beach sections were really funny, in particular the volleyball scene
  • All the horror tropes and callbacks flooding in was great as well

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Sakura Quest (Ep.6) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

I tried, I really did. I thought that a show like this that had such an interesting country town atmosphere, a plethora of beautiful girls and a quirkiness to it, there was a show here I could really get behind. But instead, the show is a snail-pace moving slice of life that has zero comedy, zero ecchi, zero fun. The anime thus far has been about depression, reality and looking at pretty things. Either it’s built for a female audience or it’s built for someone who likes material that has nothing exciting going on. And this show is going to go 25 episodes?! There’s no way I’m committing to that when the show consistently bores me and offers little to no response from me beyond “Well, she’s pretty cute.”. I don’t care if the show picks up around Episode 9, 11, 13, whatever. It doesn’t excuse it for being boring for the first six!

THE GOOD

  • The zombie bit was kinda cool

THE BAD

  • The show is boring as hell, plain and simple
  • There’s nothing to laugh at, nothing to smile at, the show is just a boring, depressing real life look and that’s not why I watch anime

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED***

Week #5 – Spring Anime 2017

Week #5 has arrived with this Spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

NOTE: My apologies for the delay, folks. Work this week really ramped up and my spring sports started up, so I had less time this week to watch shows than usual. Now that I’m aware how strict my schedule’ll have to be, should be better off going into next week’s round!

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Okay just for starters, what the fuck is with Re=l’s name? Japan, sometimes you go the wrong kind of route for a “WTF?!” reaction out of me. The episode was fine up until the moment the Imperial Guard started to demand Rumia’s execution. Sure, you get a little more time to digest what’s probably going on, but they move this part of the story way too fast. This isn’t really a mystery anime, so why are we wasting time in confusion? The rest of the show thus far has bludgeoned us over the head with simple, straight-forward storylines. Hopefully next week clears up this rough patch, I don’t think it’ll take much. Glenn/Sisti continues to be a cheesy relationship and the addition of Albert and Re=l (I’m gonna hate this name, because I know if she keeps this up, she’ll be in my top 5…) just adds to the great cast we’ve got thus far.

THE GOOD

  • Re=l. She’s awesome and adorable
  • Glenn/Sisti has become quite the interesting relationship

THE BAD

  • Re=l. Her name is awful!
  • The sudden execution storyline was put together way too fast and needed more explanation than what we got in this episode

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Eromanga-sensei (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Well that escalated fast! But then we revert right back to the stupid male character trope and we’re okay again! This episode brought something to life that needed to be done so badly: Elf and Sagiri meeting. These two together bring out the best, especially Sagiri who finally once in a while is getting away from her painfully over-the-top shy and embarrassed little sister character. Of course, Megumi will potentially run into this situation as well and I can only imagine it’ll get so ridiculous after that. Though personally, I’m more curious about Tomoe, who’s the most “normal” of all the girls we’ve seen thus far. This episode altogether was far better than last week’s atrocious attempt, funnier, added a lot more both in charm and personality. And yes, there was much more ecchi.

Also seriously…what was with all those fat man running transitions?

THE GOOD

  • Elf broke Sagiri out of her boring side, I love her now
  • With Megumi and Tomoe on the way to butt into things as well, we’re getting close to rounded out cast

THE BAD

  • I continue to feel awkward watching this show. Ah well…

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Granblue Fantasy (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

This episode was a normally good episode. I don’t have anything necessarily negative to say, but I don’t have anything overwhelmingly positive to say either. The episode for the most part furthered the plot a little bit more with us getting a main villain to think about later on and furthered our group’s formation with Rackam officially joining the cast and setting off for their next mission. This plain and simple was a moot point episode. Nothing special, just a decent run this week.

THE GOOD

  • The airship sequences looked really cool
  • I’m curious to see what the other gods/goddesses will look like now after Tiamat

THE BAD

  • There wasn’t anything special of note this week, just an episode essentially right down the middle for me

Episode Score: 4/5

Hinako Note (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Once again, a very good adorable episode. We got a little more ecchi out of this episode than we’re usually getting, mostly with the running joke that Hinako is hiding some big breasts and Yua is naturally jealous as fuck about it. As this series has gone on so far, I’m finding that oddly enough, the most experienced member of the main cast is easily the weakest, in Chiaki. She’s continuing to offer almost nothing in terms of comedy, she’s really the girl with big boobs and walking around without pants on.

THE GOOD

  • Hinako continues to walk the tightrope of cute and sexy
  • Yua with Hinako is a fantastic pairing

THE BAD

  • Chiaki is really starting to bore me

Episode Score: 3.5/5

KADO: The Right Answer (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Immediately, I love Saraka’s thought process of the Wam, that we shouldn’t have access to infinite energy just like that, it’s far too early for that. Speaking of which, holy hell is she cute as hell when she’s angry! Once again, the realism of the situation comes off very accurate here with the United Nations immediately demanding all the Wam to be given to them for further deployment, almost as if they’re looking at them the same way as nuclear weaponry. It shows just how unprepared we actually are for such a technological breakthrough. Lastly, Kanata’s about to get a bigger role, so I am more than okay with this!

THE GOOD

  • Again, the realism is on point here
  • Saraka’s opening up and Kanata’s about to get a more mainstaying role it seems

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

A Leonhard-heavy episode, which isn’t necessarily bad, it was filled with jokes, over-the-top facial expressions and chalk full of sheer stupidity. Because apparently Leonhard is a dunce cap. I could go on about how impossible it should be to go from scoring 1/100 to 60/100 in three days, but it’s anime so I’ll drop it. However, I’m not sure how I feel about the end of the episode. Sure, I don’t mind Heine and Viktor, the king knowing each other for what appears to have been a long time, but this sudden half-seriousness about Heine’s past, I don’t know how I feel about it. I worry that might break the fun this show has been for me after five episodes thus far.

THE GOOD

  • Leonhard-central episode, always great as he’s a fun character to watch
  • Viktor naturally also has a fun quirk to him

THE BAD

  • I don’t know if Heine’s past will end up being okay for the show’s health or not

Episode Score: 4/5

Renai Boukun (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

With the addition of Shikimi and now the “plot” of Seiji trying to teach Guri what love actually is so she can take essentially the role of God from her father, there’s enough to finish off what’s needed for the show. We have a “villain’ of sorts in Shikimi and a “plot” of sorts in Guri’s quest to learn what love is. Mix that with the over-the-top comedy and the ecchi and we’ve got a pretty good show rolling about. Though this week, I could’ve done with a little less of the Kami scene, it dragged on a little too long for me.

THE GOOD

  • Shikimi brings to the table what the others cannot, a threat to Akane
  • The addition of a “plot” gives the out of bounds anime something to shoot for so that it does eventually come back in-bounds once in a while

THE BAD

  • Nothing really to report aside from the Kami scene being too long

Episode Score: 4/5

Sakura Quest (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

I’m really struggling with this show. A lot of people are comparing it to Shirobako, which is honestly a show I was super bored watchingand this show is no different. I have to admit it’s extremely beautiful and the girls are all unique and interesting, but the actual plot and pace of the show is so slow and offers almost nothing. I know it’s slice of life, but I’ve watched so many other slice of life shows that at least have good comedy, good story, or hell, good ecchi in them, something to keep the show interesting!

So…it’s got one week to give me a reason to keep watching. Cause I’m tired of waiting and the season is running for 25 episodes. I’m not watching boring episode after boring episode.

THE GOOD

  • I’ve honestly got not much to say, it just wasn’t offensively bad

THE BAD

  • The most boring episode yet, literally just an episode filled with pointless dialogue and scene after scene of “isn’t this piece of art amazing?!”, which by the way, I could care less for art in terms of paintings, carvings, sculptures, museum-level shit
  • How does a show that has so many lively characters come off so dull?!

Episode Score: 2/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Week #4 – Spring Anime 2017

Week #4 has arrived with this Spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

This episode went by really fast, I honestly thought we were at the halfway point when it was over. It was a very good episode, though there was nothing extremely unique about this week that warranted a screenshot, nothing super funny, nothing super sexy, just a good all-around episode. Glenn continues to become a more interesting character, though I kind of want him to go back to the douchebaggery again, at least in bursts, rather than this “All right, fine, I’ll be good, but I don’t like it!” kind of attitude that is still entertaining as all hell, but it’s not what brought me in, in the first place.

THE GOOD

  • I’m curious to see where the story goes with Rumia and her mother, though in the bad section, I’ll explain why I’m also not looking forward to it…
  • Sistine’s relaxing now, so she’s nowhere nearly as unbearable

THE BAD

  • I can see it coming…Rumia’s mother is going to get killed next week, isn’t she?

Episode Score: 4/5

Eromanga-sensei (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

I was rather disappointed with this episode, there was pretty much no comedy to be seen here. This was mostly because the show was trying to push Masamune and Sagiri a little bit closer and get things moving along, but regardless, the show could’ve at least had a couple jokes in there! Other than a little bit of a Sagiri imagination land going on, there really wasn’t too much to gravitate towards, unless you are super into this relationship, which as of right now, I’m not all that much.

THE GOOD

  • I suppose Sagiri evolving her drawing style does add a little more potential to things

THE BAD

  • Very boring episode, little to no humour
  • Sagiri’s voice is starting to drag on me a bit, I don’t think it’s all that cute, it’s a little too held back

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Granblue Fantasy (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

As the episodes keep coming, the cast of characters expands and we get just a little more. With Rackam officially on the team now and the two mysterious agents coming back once again, there’s a small enough cast to bring more interest to the show. However, I’m still waiting for some real advancement in this story, we’re a third the way through now (assuming it’s 12 episodes) and we’ve still yet to have much of an idea on what’s really going on here. Let’s get things kicking next week, all right?!

THE GOOD

  • Rackam adds a little more intensity into the group, which it desperately needed
  • I love the airship designs in this show
  • The two agents, I love them so much, they’re a perfect foil to the group

THE BAD

  • The whole ‘it works now because it’s time’ thing with the Grandcypher was a bit ridiculous, I hate that cliche

Episode Score: 4/5

Hinako Note (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

The longer this show goes on, the more I know it’s a bottom-half of the list show that’s just really cute and really easy to watch. The theater theme is a hard pill to swallow, since I’m really not for plays and such, but the show’s overwhelming moe and comedy helps it enough to really have no problems with me, at least at this point.

THE GOOD

  • Moe is on full display again
  • Their advisor is anime ridiculousness at its best

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report again this week

Episode Score: 4/5

KADO: The Right Answer (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

The idea of a show that is essentially the process of first contact with an unbelievably high-technologically advanced being continues to bring so much interest to me, however it doesn’t bring enough to the table to make this a legendary show. It is still very good and quite the interesting look at what an event like this could be like. The idea as well that Yaha-kui zaShunina wants to advance to human race while simultaneously hinting that he knows that what they want the most is infinite power and that the need to make the right choice with this opportunity. Why? Because we all know what would happen if anyone had access to infinite power. They’d sell it or use it for war. Let’s see what they choose next episode…

THE GOOD

  • The intrigue continues on, as does my overwhelming confusion of the science the show is trying to communicate to me
  • Watching Kanata watch all this go down is probably just as entertaining if not more than the entire show

THE BAD

  • The show is still lacking in something, I’m not quite sure however what it needs to be

Episode Score: 4/5

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Another great episode full of reactions and gags that constantly make me smile. This has become the one show I make sure to watch with my girlfriend, as she is super attached to this show as well. Kai has really shot himself forward now, he didn’t even make the Top 5 guys list in the first quarter, in this episode I’ve shot him up to #1, yes even ahead of Glenn. His timing is so perfect in this show, it only adds to just how fantastic his jokes and gags are.

THE GOOD

  • Kai is becoming the shining star of this show
  • We’re a third the way through, I don’t see a weak link in the pair. Sure there are better ones in the group, but I don’t think any one of them are bringing them down

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report again this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Renai Boukun (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

With the addition of Shikimi now…oh dear, we’ve got a yandere girl who stabs the fuck out of Seiji and now we’ve got a crazy masochistic girl who takes pleasure in stabbing the fuck out of Seiji. Poor bastard. Humour still remains intact, but man would I like to see a little more ecchi in a show that seemingly revolves around romance and perversion. No shirts are not going to cut it here, in a show like this, everyone should be parading around in the underwear or completely naked and yes that includes Seiji as well.

THE GOOD

  • Shikimi adds a foil to the main cast
  • Jokes are still on point

THE BAD

  • I’m unsure where I stand with Shikimi right now, though she hasn’t been cast in the show’s comedic light just yet

Episode Score: 4/5

Sakura Quest (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

This is a tough episode to judge, it has its light-hearted moments and then it just gets a little uncomfortable and depressing. The idea of this show thus far being able a town that struggles to change and prosper, with a cast of characters all trying to essentially escape a life they’re not enjoying, it really starts to tax on you after a while. I’m not in the state of mind to want to drop this show, but this show is really struggling to make me rate it highly at all. Every time it starts to get good, it takes its foot off the gas.

THE GOOD

  • Doku was the real bright spot this week
  • I’m kind of curious to see if Sanae/Kazushi is actually a thing or not, I got the sense that maybe she sees something in him

THE BAD

  • The show is really dragging its heels at times
  • I know Japan likes depression, but fuuuuuuuuuck!

Episode Score: 3/5

Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Yeah, I finally gave up with this show after about the seven-minute mark. Was the show EXTREMELY sexual? Yes, but in the past two episodes, there was just enough interest garnered from it. This week, it’s completely tits and ass and doesn’t even try to hide it within some sort of a plot, or at least a little bit of comedy. I knew I was going to drop this show eventually, I’ll admit I’m surprised I made it this far, honestly.

THE GOOD

  • If you like boobs and butts, you’re always covered (because they aren’t)

THE BAD

  • It’s another show much like Queen’s Blade, Highschool DxD, Masou Gakuen HxH, there’s just ecchi and nothing more
  • Even worse, the censorship is so distracting that even if you were interested, it’s still a pain in the ass to watch

Episode Score: 1/5 ***DROPPED***

Week #3 – Spring Anime 2017

Week #3 has arrived with this Spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

As I did last week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

I am so fucking happy I found this show after losing so many, because after 3 weeks, this is easily my favourite show out of them all. A show that on the surface looks like some average, boring magical school anime with ecchi, it actually has some of the wittiest comedy and one of the most interesting story concepts I’ve seen in a show in quite some time. Glenn is such a fantastic character, both witty and yet powerfully serious when he has to be. Now I just wish the garterbelts weren’t a major focus point of the girls’ uniforms…

THE GOOD

  • Glenn continues to rule!
  • The show is actually balancing violence with comedy and a little ecchi for good measure and it doing it fantastically well!

THE BAD

  • Absolutely nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 5/5

Eromanga-sensei (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

As I was hoping for, the comedy’s getting better and the show is getting better, albeit gradually and slowly. This episode is the best thus far, but has a long way to go still. Elf is starting to come into her own, that’s for sure, but I want Sagiri to actually get involved and not just be the shut-in with two minutes of screen-time every episode. Not only that, but I feel we need another girl or two involved, as Megumi really isn’t putting in the work right now either.

THE GOOD

  • Elf was far less annoying this week, really helped move things along actually

THE BAD

  • Sagiri needs to be more involved, the show after all revolves around her

Episode Score: 4/5

Granblue Fantasy (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

We’re adding more to the interesting cast we have with Rackam, potentially the helmsman of the airship the cast will fly around in the rest of the anime. The show continues to be an intriguing show at best, but still really isn’t coming out in full. The cast is certainly there, but there’s nothing story-wise that’s hooking me in just yet. Certainly with a lot of characters to love, especially Katalina who’s basically the female form of myself with how easily she’s distracted by cute, fluffy cats, there’s a lot for me to stay interested. I just hope the show really starts to make a move.

THE GOOD

  • Katalina is my female spirit anime girl
  • Rackam is such a polar opposite to the other four main cast members and it makes him stand out that much more
  • Oh my god the Harvat people are so freaking adorable!

THE BAD

  • The story needs to start kicking in soon, the show can’t get by on quirky cast members alone

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Hinako Note (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

The kawaii continues to ramp up higher and higher with this show, as I got another adorably funny episode once again. Though I will admit, I’m surprised the show is putting in as much ecchi as it is, kind of the same way I felt when Anne Happy was suddenly having the girls parading around in their underwear and such. I wasn’t anticipating after the first two episodes, despite having seen Hinako already in her PJs with her butt on full display, that we’d see her naked in the bath with her hands barely covering her breasts.

THE GOOD

  • Surprisingly good ecchi
  • Yua brings out the best of cute Hinako
  • Mayuki is so entertaining trying to make someone cuter than she is

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

KADO: The Right Answer (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

The show continues to intrigue me with each passing episode as we delve further into what’s going on with Koujirou, zaShunina and this giant cube structure. I love how this is being taken slowly, as if it were a real-life depiction of this kind of event. Even zaShunina telling the humans that they should always be asking the question of whether he’s a friend or foe, there’s this great understanding of how we’d have to deal with first contact with someone outside of our own planet. Hopefully with Saraka soon to be truly added into the mix, we get a real interesting cast of characters. We have two boys already with Koujirou and zaShunina, now let’s even it out by adding Saraka with Kanata.

THE GOOD

  • The visuals were fantastic this week
  • I love the slow interpretation of the progression of such an event

THE BAD

  • No Kanata really, booooooo!

Episode Score: 4/5

Kenka Banchou Otome: Girl Beats Boys (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I don’t hate the show, but I’m not getting anything out of it after two episodes aside from the potential fake-BL stuff. Not only that, but it’s a short as well, so I’m not getting enough time to settle in with the show. I think there’s something to like here, but 7 minutes ain’t enough to do it in this specific case.

THE GOOD

  • The horrendous acting job from the real Hikaru was kinda funny

THE BAD

  • There’s really nothing to grab onto, the characters just look cool but don’t feel cool

Episode Score: 2.5/5 ***DROPPED***

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

This continues to be one of my favourites, chalk full of cheesy over-the-top comedy, an adorable cast of characters and just enough drama to keep it from going off the rails. Leonhard specifically keeps standing out, though that’s pretty much how the producers of the show have set it. Either way, his relationship with Heine continues to grow more interesting and closer to BL every single episode.

THE GOOD

  • Comedy is still staying strong
  • Leonhard managing to stay on the interesting side when he could easily just be a brat

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Renai Boukun (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Thankfully, we didn’t get an official incest pairing between Seiji and Akua, but the implications are certainly still there. Instead we get a demon penguin, a notebook burning, a ganguro cupid girl and the biggest boobs yet on the show coming to us next week. The episode was back to its funny ways, still not recapturing the absolute insanity of the first episode, which I firmly believe isn’t possible at this point. But still an extremely entertaining episode.

THE GOOD

  • It’s nice to have a good variation with girls, Akane and this new pink-haired vixen are super sexy, Guri and Yuzu are cute sexy and Akua is tomboy sexy
  • So fucking hilarious

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Sakura Quest (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

The episode this week was large in part very boring, there wasn’t much going on aside from Yoshino attempting to find something to like about Manoyama. However, at the very end, literally the last fifteen seconds of the episode before the credits rolled, I got something I wanted out of the show: some charm. The five girls, Yoshino, Shiori, Maki, Sanae, Ririko, together they really shine like stars and seeing them casual with each other really brought out the kind of entertainment and emotional value I like from a slice of life show. So here’s hoping it’s like this the entire episode next week, because if it is, Sakura Quest will be moving up the rankings quickly.

THE GOOD

  • The promise and potential after the last few moments really gives me something to look forward to

THE BAD

  • The remaining 95% of the show was extremely boring and didn’t offer much

Episode Score: 3/5

Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

This show, I am well aware that it’s basically a one step from hentai show, but unlike ones like Highschool DxD and Masou Gakuen HxH, I’m actually finding something in the show that’s keeping me interested. The designs are part of it, but the characters themselves come off very intriguing, of course Leviathan being the top of it all. Now granted, I could’ve gone without water tentacles and that kind of stuff, but oddly enough regardless of the fact the show falls into similar categories to shows I can’t stand, this one after two episodes hasn’t given me a reason to want to get rid of it.

THE GOOD

  • Levi continues to stand out
  • The ecchi game (when not being censored) is really on point in this show

THE BAD

  • Could’ve done without tentacle rape, can always do without tentacle rape…

Episode Score: 3/5
