Week # 12-13 – Spring Anime 2018

We’ve reached the final episodes with the 2018 spring anime season. How will these shows do as they come to their conclusion?

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

A fitting end to another wonderful season of this show. As I’m writing this, while this is the first show you see every week on here, it’s the last show I watch every week. This particular week, not counting the final episodes I’ll see in what will be week 13, was terrible. Almost every show ended either poorly or terribly. So imagine my level of happiness after this episode came through.

Everything I could’ve ever wanted from this show happened. Futaba successfully got her advanced license, she completely overcame her fears and her sadness. They have two new members coming into their Club now with Kotori and Kodama and I imagine Kokoro will factor into it too. Hikari and Futaba are closer than ever and we’re to also assume that Mato and Peter might be working back to being an item once more, now that she knows who Peter is. The only thing really that was missing, was a kiss. Didn’t have to be Hikari/Futaba mind you, but just one relationship to truly bloom and flourish. But perhaps that’s a topic for a third season?

Do I think there will be one? I don’t know. But to be fair, I had no expectations of there being a second season, so who knows, there could be another. Either way, what a wonderful 12 episodes this show was.

THE GOOD

  • Everything culminated perfectly, Futaba specifically
  • Leaves a lot open for a possible third season, without making the viewers upset

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 5/5

OVERALL SCORE: 4/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Still a little confused, but we have a few answers to at least go with. I’m left to assume Hotaru’s sister is this generation’s Blood Spirit, Mikuni is the one who caused Tenna to lose control and send J and Hayakawa to the present day and both Mikuni and the garden boy lost their parents, thus their desire for returning to the past is strong. Mikuni seems to have the stronger resolve, as his parents were part of a second bloodline that caused the distortions by travelling back in time, rather than just sealing the distortions when they were still manageable.

In the end, I think everything’s pretty clear here. Without returning to the past in this episode, it’s obvious J is going to save the world over his sister and ideally will save everyone except for Mikuni. There will probably be some sort of way he gets to speak with Tenna one more time, but regardless the ending seems pretty straightforward at this point.

In the next and final episode, I will go through what I think this show really fucked up hard on and needs to correct with a second season, albeit the likelihood of that seems very unlikely.

THE GOOD

  • A few more answers to help us

THE BAD

  • For a final battle, everyone’s essentially useless

Episode Score: 3/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

I don’t know what changed between this episode and the previous 11, but holy fucking shit was the animation bad in this episode, to the point I was completely taken out of it. I’ve never seen fight animation this bad since watching old animations on Newgrounds. How did a show that had some pretty good fights between J and Hayakawa have an episode like this?!

Animation aside, did the episode at least come through with a good conclusion? Absolutely fucking not. Nothing is really resolved, just your basic bad guy loses and the MC cries because he’ll never see the love interest ever again. The only reason this show isn’t getting a 1/5 rating is because the end reverts back to fun, light-hearted cast that had me like the show from the very beginning. Though the “Is that girl maybe Tenna somehow?” bit at the end was silly, since there’s no context given to us.

But yeah, this was a terrible episode and one hell of a terrible way to end a series. Way too much time wasted, causing a really half-assed scrapped together final episode. Do I hope for a second season? Not if their budget is going to be pinched again and that animation quality is going to plummet like a motherfucker. But then again, how about no in general, because I don’t see a show getting more light-hearted, it’ll only get more serious. And this show sucked when it tried to be serious.

THE GOOD

  • I mean…it was fine at the very end again…

THE BAD

  • Half-assed story
  • Quite possibly the worst animation I have ever seen. Just watch the fight scene in that episode and tell me that’s not some of the laziest, most horrendous thing you’ve ever seen

Episode Score: 1.5/5

OVERALL SCORE: 3/5

Comic Girls (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

I am extremely pissed off now. Essentially the final episode does the opposite of what made it so good the previous 11 (well maybe 10, last week wasn’t very good) episodes before. The girls are all gone, Kaos is essentially on her own and she basically struggles all episode. That joke is good, but in bursts, not an entire episode. Also, without the other four girls, there isn’t anyone to really bounce off on Kaos, thus the humour is gone and the show feels empty. Sure, her struggles and overcoming them end up being a feel-good story, but without the others, without the jokes and without the overwhelming moe that the show normally brings, I felt myself getting more and more annoyed watching the episode and it continued getting worse until the very end.

And sure, they all came back together after the credits, as apparently they were kicked out so the dorm could be renovated? I’m assuming that’s what happened, it’s never fucking stated in that final scene. But that doesn’t excuse the last two episodes of a total emotional flip. This show had 5/5 potential and in the final two episodes, it ultimately crashed and burned. I 100% want a second season, but only if it’s just as a comedy anime. This show absolutely does not work when it’s trying to be more realistic and serious. I never want to see this show have episodes like the previous two ever again.

THE GOOD

  • Kaos overcomes once more

THE BAD

  • Does not excuse leaving the entire cast aside from the Matron out of the majority of the episode
  • Almost no humour or moe to speak of in this final episode
  • Horrendous way to close a hilarious series

Episode Score: 1.5/5

OVERALL SCORE: 4/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

Oddly enough, the show I’ve had the most trouble with ends pretty well. The Hina and company getting lost in the snow arc had its moments, especially them trying to fool Hina with snow being ikura so she’d stop being hungry. I thought it was a surefire plan. But it’s the second half with Mao that things once again were just plain ol’ fun again. The same, tiresome jokes weren’t being reused again and again, the characters were interesting, everything about it was just fun to watch. And with Mao making her way to Japan now, it’s left to be assumed a second season is planned and given the overwhelmingly positive reactions to this show, I don’t see how it wouldn’t get one.

Now I’ve said it several times that I don’t get the over-the-top praise the show gets. I’ll never tell you that this show is bad, far from it. But at least from my perspective, as someone who I at least think has watched enough comedies to get a good sense of what works and what doesn’t, this show isn’t anywhere near one of the best comedies, but has had the potential to become one and ultimately kept stepping backwards whenever it got close. I have a love and hate relationship with Hina, her humour is very hit and miss and is often repeated to death in the worst episodes this season had to offer. Anzu is the shining star of this show as she keeps improving, while Hitomi, as much as I still love her, has gotten stale several times throughout the show. There’s a lot to be had, but the show needs to find a few more jokes it can throw into the mix, as they repeat the same jokes way too many times. That’s the key problem, the jokes are stale as fuck. But as a whole, the show is fine, just needs some more work.

THE GOOD

  • Both arcs were very enjoyable
  • Mao was the shining star to end this season

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

OVERALL SCORE: 3/5

Mahou Shoujo Ore (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

Honestly? A very meh way to end the series. Konami never intended to hurt them and when Saki refuses to hurt him as well, he tries to end himself for the “greater good”, but fails due to Mohiro. The demons then become self-aware, try to defeat the magical girls and fall in one big over-the-top attack. Konami gets arrested, the girls retire as a magical girl idol duo and start over again as their normal selves.

There really wasn’t any good joke to cap it off, hell even PRISMA showing up one more time didn’t really do much. So it’s disappointing to say that this show really didn’t deliver at the very end. I said it before, the show never really does anything horribly wrong, it just never takes a consistent step forwards. Every time it does something good, it stops doing that. Frustrating to watch when the potential was certainly there.

But magical girl shows have always been disappointing for me, so it’s not all that surprising.

THE GOOD

  • Honestly? Nothing really

THE BAD

  • Very lackluster end
  • Not even any good jokes to cap it all off

Episode Score: 2/5

OVERALL SCORE: 2.5/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

Speaking of shows coming to a disappointing end, we’re one episode away from this show’s end and it continues to get away from good episodes with really boring and dumb follow-ups. Yes, we get the joke, Subaru’s a neat freak and he gets into a disgusting mech, hardy-har-har, it really wasn’t that funny. I swear man, all the fun stuff has gone away from this show. Subaru’s not insane, he’s just annoyed now, Ligier basically doesn’t do anything, Isuzu just stopped appearing, the people getting the screen time are Shigeko and Vulgar, the two worst characters on the show!

Bleck.

THE GOOD

  • Not a damn thing

THE BAD

  • Old, retired neat freak jokes
  • Shigeko and Vulgar being the only two getting screen time

Episode Score: 2/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.13)

THOUGHTS

So with one fell swoop (or in this case, both Subaru and Isuzu being idiots), the Durandal is destroyed, Subaru’s on Earth and the season ends. Apparently we’re back up in October, although I will admit I’m undecided whether or not I’ll continue the show. Will probably depend on what’s available in the fall.

The show was great to start and then went off the rails, both in a good and mostly a bad way. I like the show still, but there’s a lot wrong with it, the jokes stopped being funny and the characters who are the most interesting have been getting a backseat to more boring ones. There was a lot to like, but also a lot to hate.

THE GOOD

  • Silliness causing the two to crash into Earth

THE BAD

  • Nothing of real note, disappointing end

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Week # 11 – Spring Anime 2018

Week # 11 has arrived with the 2018 spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

A nice episode with a GIANT FUCKING TWIST!!! So…Kokoro was male this entire time. Remember how I’ve talked about how I’ve never been fooled by a character’s gender before? Yeah that record’s gone now. Though I refuse to take it lying down, the show clearly designs Kokoro to look like a girl in every way. Perhaps that was the intent so the reveal would be so big a surprise? Who knows, but I’m not letting them get an easy win over me!

In terms of the episode itself, it was enjoyable. Hikari getting sick on her 16th birthday fucking suuuuuuuuuuuuuucks! I could’ve done without the whole burning dead grass thing, that was kind of dumb, but hey, if that was going to get Kokoro’s gender revealed, whatever floats your boat. That part just didn’t offer me anything.

NOTE: If there are no pictures on this episode, it’s because for whatever reason, my PS4 stopped connecting to Twitter, so I couldn’t post them as I normally do.

THE GOOD

  • Shocking reveal of Kokoro’s gender
  • Fun little bits with Hikari’s birthday

THE BAD

  • The burn-out stuff was a little silly

Episode Score: 4/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

So we’re still left with questions, but we have some answers and a couple things I can deduce. First off, we know Tenna knew the ritual would go wrong, so in order to save J and Hayakawa from being swept away in essentially a black hole, she pushed them into the future, knowing full well she’d die and that there’s no changing this part of history, so at the very least her brother, the one she truly loves, he still survives. Now we don’t know why the Headmaster is doing what he’s doing yet, but we at least know the gardener’s reasons. The second part, which is my conclusions, is that this girl he courted using Hotaru’s candy, is the present day’s Blood Spirit. Why he needs her and what for, that I have no idea.

It’s a time-travel, interdimensional anime. You can’t expect me to have answers. Usually, the anime doesn’t either.

THE GOOD

  • Everything is set in place for the final two episodes

THE BAD

  • A little too much confusion as to why the events are unfolding still

Episode Score: 3/5

Comic Girls (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

I want to say I enjoyed this episode, but I can’t. For this show so close to the end to suddenly stop dead in its tracks the sweet, adorable, hilarious path it had been flying away on, I cannot with a straight face say I enjoyed this direction. Yes, we knew the dorm was closing, but for the writers to bring that change in this way was not a fun way to do it. I’m also very irritated that they’re kicking the girls out of the dorm, yet there’s no explanation as to what they’ll do afterwards.

Sure, Kaos finally found her stride, she accomplished what she set out to do, but the almost depressive nature of that middle part of the episode when they started cleaning out the dorm drew away from what really mattered. It’s something that continually bothers me about anime, especially comedies. They can’t just be fun for the whole season, there’s gotta be that one moment that turns the show into the other direction. That needs to stop. Stick to what’s working in your material, don’t just change the tone with literally one episode to go. Not every anime needs to teach you life lessons by depressing the fuck out of people.

So yeah, as much as I love this show, I really…REALLY hated this episode

THE GOOD

  • Kaos finally made it

THE BAD

  • But it came at the cost of a huge turnaround in the tone of the show and completely set me off course the rest of the way

Episode Score: 2/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Not a good episode, once again, no comedy to speak of, at least in my opinion. The documentary half was really bad, like…colossally bad, I was bored and hated it from start to finish. The payoff of the fake documentary was not funny, not interesting, not worth any time. The second half was fine, Anzu being adorable is always enjoyable, but once again a joke that doesn’t hit ruins it. Nitta trying to send Anzu back to her old self because of jealous, it’s not a funny joke and nothing within that entire second half could be conceived as such.

I’m going to point this out in my end of season video, but seriously, I read article after article about how unbelievably funny and how much of a breath of fresh air this show is for comedy anime and I sit here as someone who is 100% enveloped in comedy anime and I’m going “WHAT IS SO FUNNY ABOUT THIS SHOW?!!!”. The vast majority of anime I’ve watched and continue to watch are comedies, what is it about this one that isn’t clicking?! It’s genuinely starting to bug me, with how many articles are calling this a revolutionary show, one of the best comedies in years and yet I’m sitting here as an avid watcher of comedy anime and I have no idea how this is the one that’s changing the game.

THE GOOD

  • Anzu being cute, I guess?

THE BAD

  • Once again, nothing funny about this show! I don’t get it!!! >_<

Episode Score: 2/5

Mahou Shoujo Ore (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Again, this hilariousness of how the show continues to go in the complete opposite direction. Konami basically has zero evil intentions, he’s just a lazy demon who wanted to go to the human world to get away from his shit job and meet magical girls. Sure, he’s all kinds of fucked up, but hey, it’s better than wanting to rule the world, right? Makes you think in the final episode, Saki’s just going to defeat him because he’s an idiot. That’s it. And I love that.

THE GOOD

  • Absurd reasoning for the villain doing his villainy things

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Another callback with Bitsy and an overall silly episode that while it isn’t putting me back on track with my love of the show at the beginning of the season, it’s definitely making me happier than recently. Just the fact too that Subaru lost his chance to be on TV because of womens’ volleyball is fucking hysterical to me as well.

THE GOOD

  • Bitsy’s back!
  • Hilarious ending

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

A fun little episode as the girls enjoy capping off the year and starting anew. It’s weird though, as it feels like this would’ve been Episode 12, yet there’s two episodes to go. We got all the cliches of a final episode, everyone showed up, they talked about their next steps, all that jazz, but instead we’re not quite done yet. It was real interesting to get a look at Hikari’s grandmother’s past (she’s super fucking gorgeous, by the way!) as well as getting to know Kodama a little more as well. Nothing too special here though, just a good episode all-around.

THE GOOD

  • Nice looks into Kodama and Hikari’s grandmother’s past

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

100% pure filler. Sure, he finds the secret to the code, but the letter gives us basically nothing. Sure, Holmes and Watson awaken to their powers, but we’re left with no resolution to their fight. There’s so much going on, yet no answers to be had. It’s kind of frustrating, given my interest levels in the show thus far and especially when there’s only three episodes to go. There isn’t much time left to conclude this and I fear it’s not going to be a good resolution because of that.

But who knows, maybe I’ll be wrong.

THE GOOD

  • Holmes and Watson finish off our cast of pretty superpowered boys

THE BAD

  • Pure filler, no real interest or excitement

Episode Score: 3/5

Comic Girls (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

AGAIN WITH THE OVERLY FEMININE TSUBASA!!! STOP IT!!!

Ahem…so other than that atrocity, holy freaking hell am I ever warming up to Ruki. At this point, I think she’s running away with the Golden waifu award. Loved her so damn much in this episode. She hates Christmas, I hate Christmas (for different reasons), she loves pervy anime, I love pervy anime, look…do I need any extra proof?! No!

But yeah, the episode as a whole was pretty fun, as per usual. Ruki’s arc was fun, Tsubasa’s was ridiculous and the little bit at the end with them burning their rejected storyboards was silly. Fuura of course capped it all off. I love this show.

THE GOOD

  • Ruki making her Golden Waifu case
  • Fuura continues to come in at the right moment

THE BAD

  • Feminine Tsubasa…AGAIN!!!

Episode Score: 4/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

The episode tried it’s best, rounding around Hitomi and then Anzu, but as I’ve said before with this show, I don’t get where people are saying the comedy is on point, because I didn’t laugh at all. It’s like the show is just trying to stick to the same joke and repeat it, the same format of going in one direction and then whipping into another. This only really works if you do it sparingly, but because it does it so often, there’s no value in the surprise turn anymore. The Hitomi shock face has long gotten old, Anzu being stupid has long gotten old, every grown up in the show being absolutely retarded has long gotten old. There just isn’t anything fresh and new and because of that, the comedy is completely stale.

I’d put the show on notice, but with two episodes left and the lack of shows on the weekly, I might as well finish it at this point.

THE GOOD

  • Nothing, honestly

THE BAD

  • Same tired old shtick

Episode Score: 2/5

Mahou Shoujo Ore (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

It almost makes perfect sense that the villain is actually Konami. I mean, the screwed over Hideo Kojima, ruined Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, made endless pachinko machines out of beloved properties and–oh! OH! Right, wrong Konami.

It’s dumb as fuck that Konami is the villain, but the good kind of dumb. It makes no sense and that works 100% with the show at hand. Now the episode itself, very dry, not a lot to really go into, wasn’t overly entertained by this episode. But we’re two episodes away, it’s not necessarily offending me, so I’ll probably end up finishing it.

I mean, I guess Saki breaking a giant popcorn holder over herself was entertaining…

THE GOOD

  • Silly villain reveal

THE BAD

  • Boring most of the episode

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

Was good for one minute when stupid sexy dark-skinned Subaru showed up. Then they cock blocked me, did some stupid space police thing and that was the episode. Boooooooooo!

THE GOOD

  • Stupid sexy dark-skinned Subaru!
  • Okay okay, the space police was kind of funny…

THE BAD

  • Bait and switch

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

I’m unsure whether I like or hate this ending. I suppose if I really think about it, it’s probably the right ending. Mato is reunited with her love and Ai takes a back seat, because y’know…Towano (what a shocker that the guy with the same hair, but just older, he was Peter all along!) is like double her age, if not more. The journey to getting their was very cliche, a lot of existential monologues and all that jazz, so that part wasn’t as fun. I think as a whole, this 3-episode arc kinda sucked compared to everything else. Sure Mato has something in her life now, but it came at the expense of so much more.

Here’s what we didn’t get over the last 3 episodes:

  1. ACTUAL DIVING!!!
  2. Futaba working towards her advanced license
  3. More relationship development with Futaba and Hikari
  4. Kokoro has been completely missing these last three episodes

There’s way too much that was thrown to the wayside over this 3-episode arc. If it had been a lot better, I could look past this, but given the majority of the arc and the way it’s ended overall, it’s just not worth the time lost. There was too much confusion, it was boring at times and quite frankly, it just didn’t fit. All this arc did is explain why we had that weird dream sequence with Futaba, so we could see that dream control was a possibility here. But yeah, overall this arc just wasted valuable time that could’ve been used elsewhere.

THE GOOD

  • Decent ending, Mato got what she needed

THE BAD

  • Overall waste of valuable time, didn’t need to be three episodes
  • Way too easy to figure out who Peter would turn out to be

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

So everyone’s got their powers going and it’s pretty much set that the headmaster is the villain and the greenhouse guy is likely the one who attacked J a few episodes ago. As of right now, I’m in standby mode. I can’t say this is a great episode, as it was more of an information dump than anything else. Sure, Dracula getting smacked in the face with a volleyball was funny, Ren giving himself boobs accidentally was fucking hysterical, but until we really get to the meat and potatoes of this show, I can’t really sit here and tell you much otherwise. We’ve got at least 4 episodes to go, to which I have to admit that perhaps this show needs far more than a 12-episode run to make better use of the time.

Because if it is only 12 episodes, having everyone awaken to their powers after two-thirds of the show being completed…not so great.

THE GOOD

  • Dracula getting smacked around
  • Ren freaking over having boobs was hilarious

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Comic Girls (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

A decent episode, certainly not as strong as we’ve seen from other episodes. The first half was good, getting to see Tsubasa in a more feminine light was refreshing, although it mostly just confirmed how much I love tomboy Tsubasa. Koyume apparently puts on weight, though they really don’t show it at all, the one time she can’t put on a dress doesn’t help, she literally looks the same. I think this episode however shows that those two are indeed a great couple together, they really build off one another. But they better not get together, otherwise who else will Ruki grope for her material?

As for the second half, it sucked. Plain and simple. There was nothing funny (yes that included them finding their teacher’s old manuscript) going on, they only really confirmed their friendships, something that I think was pretty apparently at this point. But at least Fuura broke it up at the end to make it funny, I needed that laugh.

THE GOOD

  • Koyume and Tsubasa are so great together

THE BAD

  • Feminine Tsubasa sucks
  • Second half was boring

Episode Score: 3/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

An actually entertaining episode. Really enjoyed the Mao opening, where it was basically making fun of Cast Away and those types of survival on a deserted island kind of films. I really hope she shows up next week, I want to see her interact with Hina and Anzu. I also really like how they’re still bringing in new characters and they’re fitting into things perfectly, like they’d been there all along. The Nitta nearly getting whacked bit was questionable at best, it was dumb comedy and not the good kind. Hina however trying to celebrate Nitta’s promotion, once again she comes off very funny in this act, moving away from her usual dry and boring routine and having some genuinely smile-worthy moments. For a show that I couldn’t wait to drop a few weeks ago, it’s actually starting to make progress.

So by that logic, next week is going to be the worst episode ever…

THE GOOD

  • Hina continues to improve
  • I liked Mao, can’t wait to see her with everyone else

THE BAD

  • Nitta’s near-death act was very dull

Episode Score: 4/5

Mahou Shoujo Ore (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

It was fine, I guess. I mean I got what I wanted, more from the PRISMA girls. I suppose it’s pretty funny how even though Michiru is extremely obvious with her emotions, she can’t generate the Love Power necessary for a proper transformation and is now become a running joke, it seems. I’m admittedly annoyed with Hyoe and how I now have it in my end that he’s not the actual villain, because it’s so fucking obvious that he is. So at this point, I almost just want the season to get moving along here so it can be over so average shows like this are gone from the weeklies.

Cause if I’m being completely honest here folks, this show is only on the weeklies still, because it’s not bad per se and because I need to keep something other than Amanchu, Butlers X Battlers and Comic Girls on this review.

THE GOOD

  • Got what I wanted, more of PRISMA

THE BAD

  • The way they’re moving the story and villain along is so dull, it’s almost painful

Episode Score: 3/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

The robot is good now and the pubic hair came back with a wife, only to die trying to save Subaru from his copy that we saw the week before. So they took the fun thing away with the robot being a douche when alone with Subaru, the pubic hair came back and then died and now the copy’s arrived.

I swear to god that copy better be the greatest thing ever, or I’m gonna be pissed!

THE GOOD

  • Return of the pubic hair

THE BAD

  • The robot is no longer fun
  • The pubic hair is dead

Episode Score: 3/5

Week # 8 has arrived with the 2018 spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

I’m not sure whether to be confused or annoyed that for a second episode the show has run towards the Peter Pan concept like we saw last week. I mean look, I’m not hating this episode, but given how there was originally supposed to be an arc with Futaba trying to get her advanced license, that’s been throw out the window for a little while now, so it’s kind of infuriating that we’re getting such a long aside here, not to mention that it’s very likely this will be another full episode.

Now I have my suspicions on what’s going on here. I cannot explain the dream world, that part is impossible. But is it possible that this world is truly a manifestation of the feelings between Mato and this other teacher that I cannot remember his name? He does appear similar to Peter. That’s all I can say for sure.

But yeah, I like and also don’t like how this dream thing is now taking essentially a quarter of the entire show.

THE GOOD

  • I am admittedly curious with where this arc goes, specifically with Mato

THE BAD

  • I’m also admittedly frustrated how this is taking so much of the season

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Like the week before, we’re ramping things up with more and more characters awakening to the Butler bloodline they are all seemingly apart of. Is it a little dumb that they all just happen to have ties to thus rare bloodline? Of course it is, but it’s a show about pretty boys and involves time travel, I’m not expecting amazingly detailed reasoning here.

At least Dracula is part of the group.

THE GOOD

  • Still interested in where the show is going
  • Dracula has powers too

THE BAD

  • A little too ridiculous that EVERY single one of these boys are Butlers

Episode Score: 4/5

Comic Girls (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

A fun episode, full of stupidity, laziness, ridiculousness and Kaos crying every other sentence. Remember how I said she was starting to mature? Yeah…that didn’t keep improving. I love how they’re trying to make it seem like she’s just really strong and keeps going, but I’m starting to view it more like she’s a glutton for punishment. Either way, got a lot more out of the older girls this week, which was nice. Throw in a quick scream from Fuura and you have a decent episode!

THE GOOD

  • Nice to see the adults get some time this episode

THE BAD

  • Kaos backtracking a bit

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

Is it weird that when this show has an okay episode, it’s like a high score for it? That’s how frustrating the show has been in the first half and now it’s starting to actually do a few things right. The biggest one this episode was that I actually enjoyed Hina throughout the entirety of the episode. She actually appears to be having some thoughts beyond being lazy and eating, thus she ends up being partially entertaining. I was admittedly disappointed with the Mami arc, if you’d call it that. I was hoping she’d carry on this Master stuff with Hina longer than half an episode, this was ended way too early. I would’ve looked for her to be similar to Hitomi, she just starts getting caught in more things as the show rolls forward. But yeah, a decent episode.

THE GOOD

  • Hina actually starting to show signs of improvement

THE BAD

  • Mami story concluded way, way too soon

Episode Score: 3/5

Mahou Shoujo Ore (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

A fun episode, though not without the usual blandness of it. Saki’s mother is a bit too ridiculous, but then again I tend to have a problem with parents who still act like children. But yeah, as a whole the show continues to sputter on, barely being above average to the point I have no real reason to drop the show. It’s sad, but that’s really it, the show is just good enough that I can’t give a legitimate reason as to why you shouldn’t watch it. Sure it’s a little bland, but it’s still funny and ridiculous. And that’s what I like.

THE GOOD

  • Saki’s mother is insane
  • I want to see more from the PRISMA girls

THE BAD

  • The usual “Meh!” nature of the show

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

Isuzu’s a whiny bitch (it’s actually annoying now) and now back on the Tiramisu there’s a robot trying to get Subaru kicked off the ship basically the second he gets back. Normally you’d think it’d be funny, but in actuality, this was kind irritating. Meh.

THE GOOD

  • Nothing much, really

THE BAD

  • The robot was funny for a moment then dropped the act and it became dumb
  • The more I think about it, the more I’m only interested in Subaru and Leroy

Episode Score: 2.5/5

To Be Heroine (Ep.2) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

I’m dropping it. I could give you a list of reasons as to why, but most importantly I just can’t make sense of what I’m watching. If you’ve been reading my weeklies for a while now, you know how much I enjoy the weird stuff, the absurd, the over-the-top. This is what happens when you try to make an anime that falls into those categories, but have no real control over it. Even the most insane shows I watch have sense to them. The most I can really grab from this show is like Futaba is creating a world as this bizarre representation of a myriad of suppressed childhood memories and pain she’s dealt with and even if I’m 100% right on this, the way the show’s doing it is in a way that’s extremely difficult to follow.

I can see how this show could end up being really good, but I cannot justify it to myself to watch any further, when these two episodes have been as boring as they’ve been.

THE GOOD

  • I honestly can’t really grab anything overly positive, other than that it wasn’t an insultingly bad episode

THE BAD

  • Continues to be boring, nonsensical and difficult to follow along with
  • No character after these two episodes is interesting to me, nor do I enjoy listening to them

Episode Score: 1.5/5

Week # 7 – Spring Anime 2018

Week # 7 has arrived with the 2018 spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

That was extremely weird. A Peter Pan ghost in the school on overnight stays who tries to take kids who don’t want to grow up away? There’s so much to digest with this, not to mention the fact that Mato has the ability to see ghosts like this and knows enough to be able to save Ai from being taken away by him. It was also weird to see Ai so easily swayed, given how she’s the sturdy one out of all of the girls. But yeah, man, that was a really, REALLY fucking odd episode to throw in there. Hell, this season has been quite strange, with lucid dreaming and now yokai are 100% real in this show. It’s quite the strange collection of things they’re throwing in the pot this season.

But most importantly, was it a good episode? Eh, it’s was fine at best.

THE GOOD

  • …I guess I’d call it a very interesting plot during this episode?

THE BAD

  • Just felt weird and out of place for the show

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

They officially have my attention. The reality appears to be that most of the characters we’ve seen are also Butlers or descendants of them. Haruto and the cafe owner is confirmed, I’m willing to bet Holmes is as well and maybe even Dracula. So at Episode 6 we’re seeing the surprises come out, so it’s only a matter of time now before things really start to kick into high gear. Hopefully there’s still fun in all of this and it doesn’t get all super broody serious, but for the time being, I’m in and ready to go!

THE GOOD

  • Surprises with Haruto and the cafe owner being descendants

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Comic Girls (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Another great episode and FUURA’S STILL AROUND!!! So everything’s at max percent, everything I’ve liked thus far about the show was in full force, there’s really nothing I can complain about, aside from the fact Tsubasa didn’t get a lot of screen time this week. But we got a little ecchi, more Fuura hijinks, Kaos actually maturing a tiny bit (pun totally intended) and hell, Koyume’s finally getting her career really started. Makes you start to wonder if they’re going to push Kaos finally becoming a serialized artist herself soon enough.

THE GOOD

  • Fuura’s still around and not in the background
  • Ruki continues to push the waifu tier this season
  • Kaos maturing

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.7) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

Huh. It actually survived another week on the basis of comedy, something the show has been struggling with for me. Sure, there is the additional enjoyment I’m getting out of Anzu having a better life now (though I admit I keep thinking it’s somehow going to end), but Hina actually had a couple of good jokes in there when it came to her wanting to be the student council president. Now I’m not going to tell you this was a great episode, there’s still a lot of work to be done, so the show is still staying on notice. But hey, if it can stay at least at this quality level, it’ll survive until the very end.

THE GOOD

  • Anzu continues to enjoy a better life
  • Hina actually being quite entertaining with her student council arc

THE BAD

  • Kind of a waste of a final act with the Nitta/Utako date

Episode Score: 3/5

Last Period: Owarinaki Rasen no Monogatari (Ep.6) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

It’s amazing to me that a show with such a wide range of characters can come off so dull and boring. Wiseman and Choco, really since Episode 2 have been the only bright spots and they can’t do enough to save this show for me. Episodes tend to be boring, uninspired and have jokes that just don’t hit. Their main cast is horrendous, Haru is one of the most boring main characters I’ve ever seen, Liza doesn’t really seem to fit into any box, so I can’t really get any sort of traction on her, and Gajeru’s just an idiot. Campanella and Erika each don’t really show much personality either, so it’s really down to Wiseman and Choco and when they’re either the foils or the one-liner character, that’s not enough for an anime to succeed.

Thinking about it more, I gave this show way too much time to recover, because the art style and design really worked with me, so I was hoping it would finally get some good comedy in there and have some fun, but instead they don’t really throw anything significant in, there’s no story, there’s really no comedy, hell there isn’t even really any ecchi, aside from the obligatory hot spring episode. There’s not much to grab at unless you really like the source material and as someone on the outside looking in, this show has given me zero reason to keep moving forward.

THE GOOD

  • Wiseman and Choco, that’s all I can really say

THE BAD

  • A really interesting concept yielding zero results
  • The cast cannot hold together a show that is not hitting at all with me

Episode Score: 1.5/5

Status: Dropped

Mahou Shoujo Ore (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Nothing overwhelming this week in either direction. There’s slight interest with what Sayo’s going to do, with her broken down body and there is slight interest with Saki shattering her weapon, though admittedly I don’t understand why this happened, it’s not really explained. After all, you don’t beat the demons with magic…you just beat them to death. Are you expecting me to believe Sayo “gently” beats them to death? But on the other side, the show just didn’t do anything extraordinary, which has continually been the case. The show isn’t having a bad day, but man oh man it’s frustrating watching it fail to get over the hump.

THE GOOD

  • Intrigue with Sayo and Saki’s futures

THE BAD

  • Extremely uneventful episode

Episode Score: 3/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Episode-wise, nothing too special here, just getting to know Isuzu a little more this week.

I’m a little mad I must admit…his brother is actually pretty pathetic, given the badass look that he has. He constantly forgets shit, is extremely meek and honestly very girly it would seems.

…Which really makes it hard for me not to love him!!!

THE GOOD

  • I want to hug Isuzu a little bit…
  • Hilarious contrast between how Isuzu looks and how he actually acts

THE BAD

  • I want to take a bath after watching this episode…and not in that green shit

Episode Score: 3.5/5

To Be Heroine (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

So this randomly appeared on Crunchyroll and it’s only one episode. So I figured since the list is getting so short, might as well look at this and see what’s up!

It’s so fucking weird and random. Now you’d think this is a good thing, given the kinds of shows I like, but in this specific case, the random isn’t all that funny and the weirdness is downright wrong due to the whole “tiny children in their underwear” stuff. So I’m putting the show on notice, just to see what one more episode entails. Otherwise, this will be an easy drop, as this first episode really didn’t get my attention beyond making me raise my eyebrows over and over again.

THE GOOD

  • I mean…they got the weird and random parts right

THE BAD

  • Unfortunately the weird and random aren’t yielding comedic results and there’s no one I’m interested in at this point
  • Mascot baby is annoying as fuck

Episode Score: 2/5

Week # 6 – Spring Anime 2018

Week # 6 has arrived with the 2018 spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Well it seems pretty clear at this point that we’re going to have two love stories play out, except one may more about loss. With this episode, we now know for sure that there is something between Futaba and Hikari (Futaba’s made it pretty clear, in my opinion) and hell, Kokoro sort of has a desire to enter into the fray as well. But what really struck me at the end was Mato talking about her past and feeling like she’d left something behind, clearly showing the male teacher we’ve been seeing this season. It’s very obvious that Mato and this guy had a thing together and it broke somewhere along the way. Curious to see where we go from here.

THE GOOD

  • Futaba/Hikari/Kokoro make a hilarious love triangle
  • Very curious about Mato now

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Well shit, that escalated, didn’t it? After J’s careless searching for Tenna’s pendant, he finally manages to get it away from Tsubasa, only to be attacked by a new Butler (we’ve yet to see the identity of) AND in the process of doing so, killing Haruto by crushing him with a pillar broken during the fight. Now is he actually dead? By realism, he sure should be, but given the show’s powers and since we’ve still surely got a few surprises left, I imagine either he will survive by some wizardry and bullshit OR he’ll be brought back to life somehow. I just can’t imagine him staying dead, if he even ends up being dead. Good episode, glad to see it ramp up a bit.

THE GOOD

  • New threat involved
  • J finally has to come to terms that his actions either killed or damn well nearly killed someone else close to him

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Comic Girls (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

So somehow after five fantastic episodes of this show, there’s still a new character than can we me over. Don’t get me wrong, I still adore Tsubasa and Ruki is such a beauty, but holy fuck does Fuura bring this show to a whole ‘nother level! What bugs me though, is I’m getting the sense she won’t be around the entire time and may just be a once every couple episodes kind of girl. Also they bring her in after the swimsuit episode?! SHAME!!!

Also, their teacher discovering her idol manga author is Tsubasa was extremely entertaining, though I’ll admit it still bugs me a little bit how she literally looks to be only (at most) 5 years older than them. Throws me off a little bit.

THE GOOD

  • Fuura. Just Fuura alone sells this week for me

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 5/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.6) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

With a minute left in the show, I was about to be like “Y’know, the second half wasn’t terrible, but it’s clear to me the direction of this show isn’t worth hanging onto”…

And then Anzu struck. That first picture you’ll see below of her happily crying. I have mentioned coming close to crying a couple of times and she in one fell swoop hit that level for me. I was expecting the usual emotional wave of her just letting out one big cry to finish things off, but instead she smiled. That hit he super hard, because I wasn’t expecting it and goddamn was it ever the perfect moment.

So y’know what? The show is still on notice because the first half was awful. Once again, Hina proves to be not funny at all. But goddamn Anzu just gave the show one more week to try and figure itself out.

THE GOOD

  • Anzu literally saving the show at the last possible moment, giving me a rare near-cry

THE BAD

  • First half was extremely dull, Yoshifumi and Hina continue to just not click at all with me

Episode Score: 4/5 (2/5 not counting Anzu)

Status: On Notice

Last Period: Owarinaki Rasen no Monogatari (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Well that was frustrating to watch, for more reasons than one. The more important one is that the episode just wasn’t entertaining at all, the jokes didn’t hit and given that we pretty much knew what was going to happen, the blow had been hit before the show actually threw the punch, so there was no lasting impact. On the other side, watching what quite honestly is a grand exaggeration of mobile gacha games, it just wasn’t even funny. The show has taken good potshots before this episode, but this one was just straight up twisting things around. You never get one-star rolls all the time, you do get guaranteed rares, so when this episode fakes that at all out, it’s not funny anymore so much as it’s just frustrating.

So like I mentioned in my recent video on how this season has been so bad, my fears have come true in that this show needs to be put on notice because it’s now gone from entertaining to extremely tedious to watch.

THE GOOD

  • Honestly? Nothing really, I didn’t smile once

THE BAD

  • Excessive over-exaggeration of mobile gacha games
  • Potshots were in bad form, every joke missed by a country mile

Episode Score: 1.5/5

Status: On Notice

Mahou Shoujo Ore (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

A much better episode, y’know…CAUSE IT WAS AN ACTUAL FUCKING EPISODE!!! The hot springs hijinks were in full force, making fun of the usual fare you’d see in this type of episode, though I’ll admit it carried on waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long and had essentially no real fighting in it, as Sakuyo’s little spat wasn’t really anything to speak of. Now halfway into the show, I’m getting kind of annoyed with the whole “isn’t that douche guy totally evil?!” crap and I’m actually expecting them to pull a fast one and be like “Oh, he’s not the villain, he’s just a giant douche in real life.” instead. But whatever, the show’s at least still being funny.

THE GOOD

  • Lots of funny moments with these hot springs hijinks

THE BAD

  • The sauna stuff with Mohiro did drag on a little too long

Episode Score: 4/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Subaru saves Christmas (not really) and we learn that “Cody” was actually his long-lost brother, who’s that sexy motherfucking blonde eyepatch-wearing boy we’ve been seeing for weeks now.

…Get those two with Leroy in some crazy over-the-top space hot springs scene and we’ve got ourselves the greatest anime in history!!!

THE GOOD

  • Total randomness with Subaru’s love for Christmas
  • BLONDIE’S ARRIVED!!!

THE BAD

  • I want to bathe in hand sanitizer after that Shigeruko spit scene *shudder*

Episode Score: 4/5

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Well other than the identity of the Jet-Black Mermaid (which was fucking retarded!), the episode was pretty good. Futaba’s still improving, hits a wall for a moment, doubts herself initially, but gets back up again and resumes her progress. We also get to meet Hikari’s younger sister, who I feel oh so sorry for. This episode was one of the more diving intensive episode, which can be a pro or a con, depending on things. It’s a mixed bag for me this time around, as there was some good shots and moments, but it also dragged a little bit as well. Still can’t complain all that much though.

THE GOOD

  • Futaba continuing her progress
  • More new characters with Hikari’s sister getting involved

THE BAD

  • Diving scenes dragged a tiny bit

Episode Score: 4/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

T’was a decent episode. The over-the-top butler battle was fun to watch, seeing Hotaru get all pissy cause the Headmaster has the hots for sister was fun, all in all it was a good episode. That blonde bitch was a bit irritating, but hey, you gotta have someone to get pissed off at eventually, right? As for the plot, it seems we’re starting to get some real progress here, as J’s bracelet appears to reveal a code to something. Now the question becomes what’s next and in fact, are we eventually going to see a villain of sorts, or is this the status quo all the way through?

THE GOOD

  • Butler battle was quite entertaining

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Comic Girls (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

And once again, when the season continues to get bleaker and bleaker, this show comes out and just blows me away. Yes, the first half was basically a swimsuit episode, but man was I surprised with that second half. Given the show’s subject matter, I wasn’t expecting a yuri relationship to appear like this, but given how things have worked out so far, it makes perfect sense for Koyume and Tsubasa to have interest in each other. The real question is, does Tsubasa have those same feelings or is it more of a sisterly relationship she sees with Koyume? Either way, I’m glad to see the show take a chance at developing a relationship that’s more than just friends and/or colleagues.

And because I do this every swimsuit episode, drum roll please! …Oh right, blog post, no sound effects. Ahem! The winner of this week’s swimsuit episode is…TSUBASA!!! I mean come on, stripes and that flat stomach. She was perfect. Koyume is second, losing out the top spot because I’m not so big on frills, Ruki is third, not because of her flat chest mind you, her bikini was just very bland. And I’d say Kaos gets fourth, but she’s disqualified due to being too adorable to actually constitute as a competitor.

THE GOOD

  • Swimsuit episode
  • VERY interesting relationship forming with Koyume and Tsubasa

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 5/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

I can’t believe I’m saying this when so much of the episode was centered around Hitomi, but I think I’m going to have to put this show on notice. For a comedy, the jokes just aren’t hitting. Like ever. After the first couple episodes, it’s completely gone, like the well has dried up. Hina isn’t funny at all now, Anzu’s just annoying and Hitomi is just being put in the same situation again and again. Like unless I want to look at Utako for a couple minutes each episode, the amount of things this show is offering to me, it’s lessening every single episode.

THE GOOD

  • Hitomi did her absolute best to try and sell this episode

THE BAD

  • Every joke missed, nothing felt funny at all

Episode Score: 2/5

Status: On Notice

Last Period: Owarinaki Rasen no Monogatari (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

I have to admit, this show really shows the idiocy of people who win the lottery and was really starting to piss me off as the episode continued on. People overspending, becoming the snobby folks they once hated. People just throwing money at the problem, or giving away money too generously, not realizing how fast that money will actually go. All of it was quite frustrating and the one that pissed me off the most was the line that basically translates to “What’s the point of having money if you’re not going to spend it?”. People like that are the most insane out there.

The other downside here is how am I supposed to like Liza or Gajeru after this episode. I was already halfway to Wiseman and now there’s literally zero reason to want anyone other than Wiseman to win. At least Haru has the sense to save his money and not be a fucking moron about it.

THE GOOD

  • Wiseman actually being good

THE BAD

  • I have zero reason to like Liza or Gajeru now

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Mahou Shoujo Ore (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

I don’t like meta episodes. They’re not funny.

THE GOOD

  • N/A

THE BAD

  • N/A

Episode Score: Blegh/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Subaru spends the entire episode eating rice and slowly taking off his clothes. What the fuck else do you want on this show?!

THE GOOD

  • Naked Subaru is best Subaru

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Tachibanakan Triangle (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

The same point has reached for this show as many others. I love this show, but I can’t profess how much I love it again and again, because there’s not a whole lot you can do with a 3-minute short here. Actually, this episode was pretty lacking, not to mention I found the entire premise meh, because I hate the fishnet-ridden outfit that Iori had on in this episode.

But yeah, show’s still awesome, but I think it’s time that it goes off the weekly, thus eliminating all the sub 5-minute shorts.

THE GOOD

  • Same good ol’ hijinks

THE BAD

  • Iori deserves better than that shit outfit

Episode Score: 3/5

Week # 4 – Spring Anime 2018

Week # 4 has arrived with the 2018 spring anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

Amanchu! Advance (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Well this was a weird episode, now wasn’t it? It’s not to say that this show hasn’t had its over-the-top weird stuff in there, just not almost ten minutes of Futaba having a lucid dream levels of weird. It’s nice to see Kokoro back and getting to know a little more of her as well, but overall I think the episode really wasn’t at its best this week. A lot of more random stuff, a little more calming, that kind of episode. Not saying it’s bad per se, but in terms of giving this episode a rating, it didn’t go out of its way to earn the highest ratings I can give an episode. Nothing wrong with that, not every episode needs to blow me away. Hell, I still love this show, even during its weaker episodes. It’s soothing, relaxing, beats being frustrated trying to understand a story or dealing with shitty arcs.

Side note though, how dumb is it that Futaba didn’t get the girl’s name, yet woke up right after she did and didn’t think to check the table next to her? You could make the argument she forgets everything after waking up, but I remember lucid dreams a lot, so I’m not letting that one get by so easily.

THE GOOD

  • Relaxing episode
  • More of Kokoro
  • Liked the other new girl, hope we see her again

THE BAD

  • Nothing overwhelming

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Butlers X Battlers (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Pretty standard in-between episode this week. Mostly investigations, one legitimate, one random and leading nowhere, like Hotaru stalking the music teacher, who’s actually just his older sister. Not saying incest isn’t out of the question (this is anime after all…), but this was clearly just a side plot to go with what was a filler episode as Kouma is getting closer and closer to Tsubasa and Tenna’s pendant. Nothing really too special going this week, just sort of setting the stage for things.

THE GOOD

  • Randomness of Hotaru’s stalker sidestory
  • Short battle between Kouma and Tsubasa was actually pretty cool

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Caligula (Ep.4) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

Y’know what? When I really put my mind to it, the show isn’t really as bad as it seems like it is. The animation is great, the action is cool, the world is interesting, there’s a lot going for the show. However when you have a concept as complex and mysterious as Caligula’s story is, you need to be able to explain it well, otherwise you’re going to lose the viewership. And that’s exactly what this show has done to me. I don’t hate the show, but I’m tired for four weeks in a row having no clue what the message or story is that this show is trying to tell me. It feels like the show is trying to tell small sidestories like 18if did, however that show actually conveyed the story with absolute clarity, while this show is making it more confusing each passing episode.

I don’t think this show is bad, but I cannot let things slide if a show is not going to put any real effort into making sense of the complexities they’re trying to tell in their story.

THE GOOD

  • Interesting referencing with the Lord of the Rings books

THE BAD

  • Show continues to be extremely confusing, doesn’t explain anything really well

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Comic Girls (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

I loved this episode, it’s a great look into what it probably really is like for someone who gets their first real taste of fan adulation. The struggles of keeping up appearances, worrying that people will think of you differently now that they see you in real life, y’know all that stuff. Instead, reality does set in and the adulation comes forth, sending Ruki into an insurmountable bliss. I only hope that I can attain even remotely something close to like what we saw in this episode, one that was really enjoyable to watch this week.

THE GOOD

  • Touching moments with Ruki
  • Kaos actually being useful!

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Hinamatsuri (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Another not-so-great episode. Some fun stuff towards the end with Hitomi and Anzu, but I’ve gotta say, Hina on her own is actually quite boring at times. I think I need to see more stuff to what Episodes 1 and 2 were, it’s starting to get a little too far on the slice of life and isn’t really adding anything to the show we’ve got so far. I really want the show to be funny and I think it’s trying a little too hard to be funny while having some serious issues. Problem is, only a few shows can do that successfully and this show when it tries to do so, just isn’t one of them.

THE GOOD

  • Hitomi continues to be the shining star

THE BAD

  • Hina on her own is not as fun as I thought it’d be
  • Boring episode overall

Episode Score: 3/5

Last Period: Owarinaki Rasen no Monogatari (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Another silly episode, going even harder on the memes and mobile game/anime references. I think I have to agree with Liza calling Choco “Meme Girl”, it works pretty damn well. Only better name would be “Chocopool”, I think. But yeah, the show continues on with the silliness, chalk full of dumb puns, jokes and idiotic plot devices. This really is a show where you watch it take the piss out of any and every cliche in the book and it’s freaking awesome

THE GOOD

  • Meme Girl
  • Classic “girl scared shitless” trope

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Mahou Shoujo Ore (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

This is one of those shows where you’re not being blown away by it, but it’s also not really doing anything wrong to warrant dropping. The show is actually really funny, weird and random, which is indeed the kind of anime I’m drawn to, but for whatever reason it’s not blowing me away to the point it’s hitting 4s and up. I do enjoy the absurdity, the facial expressions and the humour, but it almost feels like it’s missing something. Unfortunately for this episode, the cyborg guy didn’t really add anything that really helps the show, he’s just another character kind of lost in the shuffle almost. I think maybe what we really need is a good villain that can work off the girls, and if it’s that idol boy that keeps trying to steal Mohiro away from Saki, I don’t think he’s the one, unless when he shows his true colours, he goes way off the spectrum.

THE GOOD

  • Humour is still certainly there

THE BAD

  • For whatever reason, the show just isn’t doing anything to get past its plateau

Episode Score: 3/5

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A massive need to pee and a talking pubic hair…yup! This is the show that I’m liking the most so far this season! Seriously, the absurdity still keeps climbing and Subaru continues to be arguably my favourite overall character this season. The guy is so perfect, yet has the most ridiculous flaws at the same time, it’s impossible not to love him. Now we just need Ligier to put him off edge and you almost want a guy to also throw him off in that sense too.

Speaking of which, I’m still waiting for the blonde with the eyepatch!

THE GOOD

  • Bonkers second half
  • Subaru continues to shine

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Tachibanakan Triangle (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Well I guess it had to have a bad episode in there. Basically the entire episode is about Konomi being unable to go to the bathroom cause of random shenanigans. Wasn’t funny, no real good ecchi in it, just an overall stinker of an episode. Doesn’t make me want to put it on notice, just a really, REALLY bad episode

THE GOOD

  • …Girls?

THE BAD

  • Konomi-centered episode
  • Gross premise for the entirety
  • Nothing good to note of really

Episode Score: 2/5
