Week #12-13 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #12 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

After 12 episodes we now having the entire gang together, all the witches Haruto has saved (INCLUDING KAYO!!!) have come together in an attempt to awaken Haruto from what appears to have been a very long sleep. However I’m bothered by how they react to him, I’m trying to understand what they see that’s so wrong and different to them. After all, wasn’t the one figure skating girl asleep for decades given that she woke up as an old woman? Either way, I’m extremely curious as to what the end really is, I’m unsure what that church and that doctor has to do with it and I’m still not even 100% sure if Eve is truly bad or not, though I’m heavily leaning in that direction now. Well! One episode left, we’ll see how it ends!

THE GOOD

  • So happy to see everyone back, including Kayo of course, that got me emotional
  • I’m sold on the way this ending is being done, still mysterious, I have a stake in what happens, all that jazz

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

18if (Ep.13)

THOUGHTS

Wow, what a mixed bag of a finale! To start off, HOW FUCKING FUNNY WAS IT THAT THE DESTRUCTION OF THE ENTIRE HUMAN WORLD WAS SAVED BY GIRL TALK?!!! That whole segment had me in stitches, Eve as pissed off as she was calmed down just from a bunch of girls talking about how dumb men are, which by the way is 100% true, I am fully aware of how dumb I am. The whole thing was so good, just the witches and Eve eating cake and drinking tea talking about their problems, it was hilarious. However, like I said at the start, it was a mixed bag.

Haruto as we are led to believe is Adam, as in Adam and Eve. We think he’s about to kiss Eve, turning her into a normal girl and thus waking up and the two being regular humans in the human world. Instead, he decides to go to Heaven with Eve and die in the human world. And as the episode ends, none of the witches or the professor have heard back from him. So that’s your ending, Haruto never wakes up and in fact, he dies. Not only does he die, but they haven’t seen him since. So…great?

THE GOOD

  • Hilarious first half, showing how the apocalypse can be avoided
  • Great to see literally everyone together at the end

THE BAD

  • Haruto dies and it’s made to be so non-chalant and unimportant
  • We also don’t see Haruto returning to the dream world, much like he promised before leaving everyone

Episode Score: 4/5

Aho Girl (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

First show this week to completely end its season. This show really had it all, the humour was random and on-point, the characters all had their unique traits going on and they meshed well together, I really didn’t have much to complain about this season. This episode took us ten years into the past as we see Yoshiko and Akuru first few hijinks together and showing us that for sure there’s no tsundere attitude coming from Akuru, he straight up hates Yoshiko and wants to get as far away from her as possible. I was hoping for a little more with the other girls though, we basically get nothing from the others, it’s just Yoshiko.

THE GOOD

  • Ridiculous humour that any five year-olds could never create

THE BAD

  • The other girls got no real screen time in this last episode
  • The whole “they’re the exact same, just five years old” didn’t work so well with me, it was a tad bit awkward

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

Well that first half was a fan service epic! The second half…serious, why were they arm wrestling?! But yeah, lots of good ecchi in that first half, but the second half was just…what the fuck?! The show itself has been like that, some really good bits and some really dumb bits. Overall, the show may just be the weakest of those I finished and really didn’t live up to the potential it had with the fantastic cast of characters they had. Lot of wasted potential with this show.

THE GOOD

  • Ecchi-ridden first half

THE BAD

  • Second half made zero sense as to why it was there

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

I’m shocked. Sure, throughout the series we’ve had confirmations of love between both parties, we’ve seen kisses, all that lovey-dovey jazz. But for this entire final episode to be devoted not to any final boss kind of plot, but instead focus on the almost unheard of topic of legitimate marriage by not just one male and one female character, but MULTIPLE FEMALES, IN FACT THERE ARE FIVE MORE YET TO CONFESS TO TOUYA!!! That in itself is one of the most surprising and amazing things I have ever seen an anime do. As a veteran of harem-style anime shows, love confessions are already in short supply, marriage even rarer. But I’m not sure if any harem anime has actually legitimately had the male protagonist not only confess to being in love with multiple girls, but plans to actually marry them. Wow!

That aside, the episode itself however isn’t too much to gawk at. There’s no real ecchi aside from the “catching them undressing” flashback that we discover the God of Love intentionally set up for him and the comedy of the show isn’t quite there either. What the episode does though is not wind you up for a sequel, regardless that they show five more wives, Leen likely to be one of them. Could there be a sequel? Sure, but they don’t leave you with a cliffhangar or an insulting “will they fuck?” kind of comedy gag. It’s pretty much implied that once Touya matures a little more (or the episode ends) that these five so far will definitely be “involved” with each other. And for that, I give a standing ovation for an anime finally willing to do this, instead of not having anyone end up with the main character so their viewership can still dream of taking a fictional character that doesn’t exist as their wife. Can’t we all just stick to dreaming about having sex with various anime girls? Who cares if they’re married or in a relationship, we can always dream this happens before the marriage and confessions!

THE GOOD

  • Unheard of end results with Touya and the four girls

THE BAD

  • Nothing to go crazy about in terms of a climatic ending

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

Victor has finally broken out 100% of the chains holding him back and boy oh boy did we get a hell of an emotional moment out of it. Turns out that his parents, or at least his mother knew he was her son almost right away when the group showed up, thus Victor at least with his mother finally gets the opportunity to apologize and atone for the years he didn’t cherish with his family before they died. And now with Aiks going full “this isn’t even my final form”, we’ve got the big battle to end it all next week. However one question remains, are we ever going to see this “His Majesty”? Or is this a second season character?

THE GOOD

  • Really emotional moment between Victor and his mother
  • Villain has gone full Frieza on the main cast

THE BAD

  • Still being left in the dark on who this “His Majesty” character is

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.13)

THOUGHTS

The ending left quite a lot to be desired, in all honesty. Aiks as we discovered even in defeat has not been 100% killed, thus Victor (who barely survives death) still remains in his younger form, which I suppose isn’t all that bad, as I don’t think Victor butt would be as good when it’s 27 years older. There was some emotion in the ending, but when it’s understood that there’s no way the show is just killing off its main character like that, the impact isn’t as hard as it could be in other shows. But after the end of this season, I’m still very happy with how the show went, I got more than I ever could’ve expected out of this show. I had it slated to be a quick drop based on the plot summary and it turned out to be one of the few to finish and one I’d still rate quite highly.

THE GOOD

  • Good final battle
  • Very funny ending to the final episode of the season

THE BAD

  • The stakes never truly felt high in the battle
  • Seems like a cop out to not have Victor regain his time after all this

Episode Score: 3.5/5

New Game!! (Ep.12)

THOUGHTS

It was emotional, it was sweet, it was funny, but Kou still kept her pants on. I almost feel like giving that a 1/5 rating given that we saw her only go pantsless twice all season, it’s extremely disappointing! But jokes aside, the episode really was very emotional and heartwarming. Kou really has left Eagle Jump to improve her skills in a completely different market, working for a French studio. Poor girl’s going to be working for Ubisoft, I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. We got almost everything we wanted, Momiji finally stopped being a bitch, Umiko actually said something nice to Kou, everyone got drunk again and Aoba finally let Kou have it for all the crap she’s done to her.

But the most important thing we wanted was only half-done and I have to devote an entire paragraph to this, as it’s an issue I’ve really got to nail down and might at some point write an entire article about. I am so sick and tired of anime refusing to 100% love. Smartphone is getting praised endlessly from me for actually having the balls to do it, which shouldn’t be ballsy at all to do so! But anime has this thing about making sure every conceivable girl is single so anime weebs (yes, I am calling out that name when I myself am one) can continue to dream about them being their waifu. Y’know…they are fictional, you can dream about them being your wife even if they’re married canonically. It frustrates me to no end and I now demand a third season be produced so it can end with Kou either returning from her time in France, or at least coming back on vacation so that she and Rin can finally have that perfect moment. I will not rest until this anime shows those two kissing, for fuck’s sake they’r two consenting adults and they’re in love, FUCKING SHOW IT ALREADY!!!

But yeah, the episode was a great send-off and I really REALLY hope it isn’t over, I absolutely want a third season. I want to see Momiji and Tsubame grow, I want to see Nene actually develop (pun intended) into a legitimate programmer and hell, I want to see Aoba become a team lead. That is…unless Hifumi gets there first.

THE GOOD

  • Very emotional and heartwarming
  • A good send-off to a beloved character

THE BAD

  • Tough to know where the show will go without Kou there (if there’s a following season)

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Week #11 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #11 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

All right, here comes the convoluted mess, folks! I’m reserving judgment right now because I have an interest in where this goes, but man oh man I’m not sure how I feel about the sudden revelation that Earth is a giant dream world created by Eve, as in Adam and Eve.

Here’s the crazy information dump I’ve gathered from this episode:

  • The entire world is a dream by Eve
  • If she wakes up, the world therefore will be gone, thus everyone dies
  • Apparently this is one route, which has been caused due to her anger with Haruto “tampering” with the ten witches he’s saved thus far, minus the one who passed away of course
  • The other route has her waking up and saving the world, turning it into a full dream world where anything is possible

Now here’s assumptions I’m making:

  • Lily says the only way to stop everything is for Haruto to kill Eve, but I am suspect of that because that would be too easy, right? Who or what is Lily, really? Could she possibly be the devil tricking Haruto just like he/she did to Eve?
  • This guy who hates the Thorn church, I have my suspicions that he’s either Adam, trying to keep the world in balance, or the devil, trying to destroy it
  • Haruto could also be Adam, having lost all memories of himself or the dream world altering his memories. I don’t believe there’s any possibility of him being the devil

Either way, I’m intrigued and hopeful that the final two episodes don’t rub me the wrong way in the same manner that KADO did.

THE GOOD

  • Very intriguing reveal and thought-provoking mystery surrounding everything

THE BAD

  • Way too much filler with the ten witches being shown to us all over again
  • Reminding me about the third witch, I’m still upset

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Aho Girl (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Look, I don’t even care that much about the Ruri part and not even the Yoshiko turning into a badass bitch and beating up the most hardcore punks in town, watching Dog go around and save everyone like the fucking badass he is, that was what sold me on this entire episode. What a freaking riot that was. Okay, Yoshiko going all fight school was fun too, BUT DOG!!!

…That is all.

THE GOOD

  • DOG!
  • Badassery over no bananas…

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Not much to speak of here, a lot of sketches with the kids this week, nothing really of note either. A search for someone prettier than Manami, which is granted a very difficult task indeed, that was the fun section. What I didn’t need was 10 minutes of flower and shape studies, was extremely bored during this section. I felt like this week was me watching an episode of anime Teletubbies and that ain’t quite that interesting and ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS considering two weeks prior, we had a Holocaust episode.

THE GOOD

  • Lot of cuteness in the episode

THE BAD

  • Very boring first half with flowers and shapes being tossed around, I don’t watch anime as an educational tool

Episode Score: 2.5/5

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Oh my god, Francesca is basically Korone from Demon King Daimao, but even more of a pervert! So this episode was entirely set for the harem to reach limitless potential now, as we were revealed that Yumina offered Linze, Elze and Yae the chance to also be Touya’s brides, thus the harem lives on forever. None of them have accepted at this point, but because of Francesca’s “programming”, she kissed Touya for a genetic sample and that was enough to snap Linze and force her to play her own hand and be the first official loving kiss on Touya. I’m curious what Episode 12 for this show actually looks like, assuming it’s the final episode.

THE GOOD

  • Francesca is such a great character for stirring up shit
  • Leen and Yumina both calling out the girls on their harem-esque nature

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Well the end is nigh and for two characters once again, their demise comes way to quick and way too easily. Blaze winning like he did was the one that really set me off, he basically got his shit pushed in the entire fight and then magically has a set up to win. At least Mina’s makes some sort of sense with her being a descendant of Chronos! Also side note, holy fucking shit Mina is scary when she’s angry. As for Kiri and Victor, I had a moment where I was unsure if Kiri was going to survive, but now with Victor seemingly getting over the past and understanding the present and future is far more important, he should be fine now. The villain is quite interesting I have to admit, I wish they’d spent far more time showcasing him.

THE GOOD

  • Mina is scary as fuck and it was enjoyable to watch
  • Main villain in very interesting

THE BAD

  • Side villains killed off way too easily

Episode Score: 3.5/5

New Game!! (Ep.11)

THOUGHTS

Well despite so much getting better, the worst possible thing is happening during the final episode. Kou and her glorious pantsless-loving self will be leaving Eagle Jump to pursue a new venture. Now is it 100% set in stone? Of course not, they could always have her stick around, but as a realistic representation of the gaming industry, I feel it has to happen. Granted it needs to come with Rin finally confessing to Kou before it’s too late, otherwise I feel the payoff will not be what the majority of viewers want to see. The rest of the episode was fine, Nene and Tsubame sort of got along, Momiji and Aoba are not really changing much though. There’s nothing too special beyond the Kou revelation and nothing else really stood out either.

THE GOOD

  • Really heavy revelation in Kou leaving the company
  • Cute bits with Momiji playing the role of new Hifumi

THE BAD

  • Beyond the Kou revelation, there wasn’t anything else of note in the episode

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Week #10 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #10 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

What a trippy and interesting episode. It almost seems like this week was not directed at saving another woman, but now the steps being taken to wake up Haruto. This girl in particular is quite the handful, her imagination is wild, her creativity blooming and her personality while meek, still brimming with potential there to love. But as we drew to the end of the episode, it became very apparent that she was not the one who was waiting to be saved and in fact it almost comes off like she intentionally put herself in her own dream world, knowing what she could accomplish there, so we now have an idea that the professor isn’t really the only one aware of this other side. So with likely two episodes left, it appears the rest of the journey will be waking Haruto, so he may live a normal life again and perhaps meet all the lives he’s now saved over the course of this season.

THE GOOD

  • Very trippy art design
  • Interesting girl in question this week
  • Turnaround with Haruto now being the one who needs to be woken up

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Aho Girl (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

While I think I’m definitely losing interest in the show with the original effect on me fading away, this was still a fun episode. It had everything I wanted, Iinchou on full display, the gal girl getting involved, Dog getting involved, the stars all aligned in this episode and it was a blast to watch. This would’ve been a 5/5 episode had this been earlier in the season, but since I’ve gotten used to the humour and the insanity of the show, the values have been lost just a tiny bit.

THE GOOD

  • Iinchou and Yoshiko’s mother really pulled out all the stops this episode
  • Gal girls will always be a secret favourite of mine
  • Initial D and Dragonball Z referencing?! I’m in!

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

This was a much better episode that still had some adult topics and serious topics and didn’t need to go the most horrific route this time to do so. Merging two different stories on the same day also made for a nice episode, having the trio’s stalking of Quetzalcoatl’s date along with Manami going on a “date” at the same place, it ended up being a very refreshing and calmer episode that was just nice to sit down and watch for 20 minutes. In particular, the thought process a teenager goes through when it comes to trying to help their parent(s), when the reality is they’re not even adults themselves yet, so planning out the life of another adult is one hell of a hefty task. Some good stuff in this episode.

THE GOOD

  • Nice, calm episode
  • Some good life-related topics involved

THE BAD

  • There were no “illicit sexual relations”

Episode Score: 4/5

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.10) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

It always frustrates me when I have to let go of a show so close to the end of a season, but I cannot allow this show to get by on being the same thing every week and offering nothing new beyond a different couple characters and two new dishes. The show has always been extremely lazy in its writing and I allowed it to get by on the basis of having some cute girls and a ton of food porn. But after 10 episodes I’m at my wit’s end with the show. It has to go.

THE GOOD

  • Kuro once again (for a minute at most)
  • I did enjoy the fairies trying to eat a crepe, as well as the elves connecting together because of the restaurant

THE BAD

  • In the end, the show for 9/10 episodes has done the exact same thing over and over and it’s time to call it out on that

Episode Score: 2.5/5 ***DROPPED***

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

A very standard swimsuit episode, as I expected from this anime. Sure, they did introduce Sango and Kokuyou (who I’m not too big on so far) and brought some interest in Babylon existing in this world, but this was a fan service episode through and through, there’s no point in denying that fact. They brought back every conceivable girl, hell even Tsubaki got a daydream swimsuit image (which she rocked by the way!), so yeah, fan service. Can’t complain.

And the winner of the swimsuit episode…LAPIS! Honestly, sure she had a conservative get-up with shorts on, but the colours and style matched up with her perfectly and she really exploded onto the screen for me. Elze and Linze went the stripes route and was fine, Yae went single-colour and honestly I didn’t think the purple worked for her very well. If anything, second place went to Leen and Tsubaki took third.

THE GOOD

  • I will never tire of swimsuit episodes, don’t care what anyone thinks
  • Interest in the Babylon thing that ended the episode

THE BAD

  • Didn’t take to Sango and Kokuyou well

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

FINALLY!!! We now know what’s going on and we got an extra “truth” in as well. The obvious revelation is that the Horologue that stole Victo’s time and memories in the first place is the one who created this time loop within his hometown. Not only that, but he has taken a human form through all the time he’s eaten over the years. After that, Victo continues to be the pathetic excuse of a man he’s become in the second half and it appears Kiri is taking over from here. Secondly, we seem to have confirmation that Mina (aka Nana) is legitimately Kiri’s mother and Victo’s wife, although there’s still a hint of doubt in there, like there’s one final piece to the story that hasn’t been told. Perhaps Mina took the place of Victo’s real wife, perhaps Mina herself is a Horologue that is playing the role of Nana, who knows? But there’s a lot going on now that really makes me interested in the last few episodes to go.

THE GOOD

  • A few revelations really making the story more interesting
  • A cool villain in the Horologue’s human form

THE BAD

  • Bill being killed off like nothing
  • Victo still being a pathetic mess

Episode Score: 4/5

New Game!! (Ep.10)

THOUGHTS

This was a nice “near the end” level of episode. The game is nearly finished, Nene is making strides as a programmer, Momiji and Tsubame are starting to fit in with the rest of Eagle Jump, hell even Kou and Rin are progressing in their potential lovers relationship. I actually thought they might’ve had a kiss for a second there. But yeah, nothing too crazy here, some funny pet stuff, a few cute moments, specifically with Nene, who has really grown on me this season, but there wasn’t anything huge that stood out for me this episode. It was just a great watch.

THE GOOD

  • Cute all around with pets, Nene, all that jazz
  • Some real progress with various sidestories on the show

THE BAD

  • Nothing of real note to complain about

Episode Score: 4/5

Week #9 – Summer Anime 2017

A quick note before this article starts. If there anything I want you all to read from this week, it’s the Centaur no Nayami episode review, for certain reasons that anyone who watched the show this week will surely understand.

Week #9 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

…That sure was something. Extremely uncomfortable to watch, an over-the-top anime’d look into the darker side of the entertainment business, especially the Japanese idol business. Look it up, folks, there’s some really fucked up shit that goes on there, especially when it comes to “pure” idols. The entertainment business is always ugly, especially with young woman, loaded with unwanted advances, sexual assault, all that fun stuff, y’know? This episode took that reality and ran with it and boy oh boy did it do its job with how it was shown. My only question is what happened before the dream sequence started? Was the stabbing real? Was she in a coma the entire time and healing up? We don’t know, seems like a major detail to miss.

THE GOOD

  • Very real look into idols and the entertainment business for young female stars
  • Does a fantastic job at providing a very uncomfortable and sometimes disturbing atmosphere

THE BAD

  • Doesn’t explain the stabbing incident at the beginning of the episode

Episode Score: 4/5

Aho Girl (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

I’m starting to wonder if it’s finally at the point where the hyperactive nature of the show’s comedy is starting to wear off on me. The episode wasn’t bad, but I certainly wasn’t left with the same level of laughter afterwards. Sure, the Iinchou part was funny, the Sayaka getting “drunk” part was funny, but I didn’t come off this episode with as big a grin as I normally do. Maybe it really is starting to wear think and isn’t as funny as it was the first half.

THE GOOD

  • Iinchou once again with the best part of the episode
  • Sayaka’s “drunkenness” was pretty funny too

THE BAD

  • I’m not having the same level of comedy as I used to in earlier episodes

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

What. The fucking. Fuck?! Look, I get the message this show is trying to put forth, but holy fucking hell, this was not the way to do it. The first half was completely fine, but then the second half was devoted to what ended up being the past of a character we saw in the first. The frog stuff with Jean was cool, some very thoughtful stuff, but then the business man he shook hands with turned out to be a Holocaust survivor and we got a 10-minute showing of what a monster racial Auschwitz would look like. Horrifying shit, stuff I did not want to see in a show that was as cheerful and light-hearted as this one. I really, REALLY want to drop this show on that principle. But…

Here’s the thing and this is an episode that’s caused me to go somewhere I don’t ever want to go on this page, but I have to: politics. To those familiar with the Charlottesville event, we all know from various news reports that the Neo-Nazi, KKK, white supremacist, alt-right, Conservative, Republican, whatever you want to name them, they all showed up in numbers to protest the removal of a Confederate statue of Robert G. Lee. My thoughts on Charlottesville are something entirely and I won’t bring it up here, but I do have a simple thought on the statue that was to be removed. No matter what the statue represents, no matter when it was actually erected, no matter how you feel about it, it does not matter. It is history and it must remain visible as history, no matter how negative that history is to our society. If you want to deny that history, too bad, it is history nonetheless and must remain visible to serve as a reminder of our dark past and how we all must learn from it.

I want to drop this show for using the Holocaust as a way to provide a message to its viewers about race and violence, this show was not the way to do it. But here’s the thing, I’d be an absolute hypocrite for dropping the show solely because of it using history I don’t like seeing. Regardless of how I feel about the Holocaust, I cannot deny it (which is disgusting that anyone in this world denies it ever happening), nor can I deny being shown memories, photographs, video and various interpretations and representations of one of the most horrific events in our human history. We must put up with showings like this, remember the darkness that we as human beings created in our history and we must learn to never repeat the same mistakes again.

So yeah, as much as I’d love to drop the show right now, I won’t. The show itself is not bad, the real human history it shows is. I cannot drop an anime for that reason when my political and societal views don’t match. But I will tell you that I did not like this second half of the episode one fucking bit.

THE GOOD

  • Interesting character in Jean Rousseau

THE BAD

  • Didn’t like the whole “frogs must be French” thing, you know it’s just because of frog legs being a delicacy in France
  • The entire episode is destroyed due to a horrifying choice to use the Holocaust as a way to get a message about racism and violence to its viewers

Episode Score: 1/5 on principle, but as an emotional episode and one that challenged me as a viewer, it’s a 5/5.

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

…IT WENT RIGHT BACK TO BEING BORING AGAIN!!!

So I won’t even get into it, you know the drill by now, two half-episodes featuring new characters, new dishes and nothing special at all to talk about. So right after it had a really good episode, I’m sending the show back on notice, permanently. I will be forever hard on this show, so for the final 3 episodes, if 10 or 11 fall into the same trap, the show will not make it to it’s 12th and final episode.

THE GOOD

  • Kuro, for the few seconds she’s there

THE BAD

  • The usual stuff that bores me, uninteresting characters, nothing funny or interesting to take from

Episode Score: 2/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

Solely for the reason that Touya in one second ended the biggest threat of the series thus far, I freaking adore this show. It’s actually getting more interesting with the advent that Eashen is very reminiscent of feudal Japan as well. But most importantly, this was a lovely episode where OP main character does the most damage we’ve seen yet and it cost him nothing. Once again I cannot stress how funny I think this show is, because it’s literally a shitty harem where the male lead is capable of anything and everything, except dealing with a bunch of girls who want his love?

THE GOOD

  • The moment he beats the villain of the episode, pure fucking gold!
  • The newly learned fact that Leen is a giant pervert makes for even more hijinks

THE BAD

  • I’m kind of sad Tsubaki isn’t sticking around

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

Wow, they really spent a whole episode not actually explaining anything. Last week, I mentioned how the episode in question hadn’t done anything of note, it just set up the next big thing. This episode has done the exact same thing, it’s just carried on the soon-to-be explanation for what I would hope is next week. The entire episode was Victo trying to change a past that isn’t real and the other three discovering a wall surrounding the town, as if we all didn’t figure that out. It was a waste of an episode with forced emotions that really didn’t translate, easily the worst episode they’ve done thus far.

THE GOOD

  • Nothing really of note that was good, other than Blaze being a retard as usual

THE BAD

  • Victo has gone from an interesting, fun character to a blithering idiot these past two episodes
  • The entire episode doesn’t explain a thing about the mystery of the town
  • Forced emotional sequences that didn’t generate a thing from me

Episode Score: 2/5

New Game!! (Ep.9)

THOUGHTS

This was a pretty solid episode, I really liked then first half with Hajime and Yun, getting a look into their past and really opening up, I think I really like Hajime so much more now all of a sudden. After that, we see now Tsubame is now being a bit of a bitch too with Nene, though I give her a little more room for understanding than I do when it comes to Momiji’s pointless hatred towards Aoba. Speaking of those two, they really tried to get you to like them in the same manner of the rest of the cast this week, with them both being in rather ecchi situations, but I still can’t attach to either of them, there’s just nothing drawing me in.

THE GOOD

  • Hajime really stood out this week
  • Some character development with Hajime, Yun and Nene

THE BAD

  • Momiji and Tsubame are still difficult to latch onto in the same way I have with the rest of the cast

Episode Score: 4/5

Week #8 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #8 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

That was a really interesting episode. The deaf girl was super cool and interesting, not to mention the amount of psychology banter and such. Although at the same time, the episode drags on quite a bit, can be quite confusing and there’s also quite a bit of “look inside yourself” kind of cliche banter. In the end, while I did enjoy certain aspects of the episode, this week falls a bit short as more of it came off boring and preachy.

THE GOOD

  • Very interesting girl this week
  • Some interesting psychology-based chatter

THE BAD

  • Very boring and dragging in places
  • Cliche banter

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Aho Girl (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

A fair episode this week, nothing really standing out in the same way that most other episodes do, though I’ll admit a slight bias to the Iinchou moment of self-awareness. Well…before Sayaka brought her back to Iinchou’s insane “reality”. The first skit with the gal girls was pretty funny too and the fourth skit between the two dogs was good too, but I didn’t get the same over-the-top fun feeling that other episodes have giving me. Don’t get me wrong, this was still a very good episode, but compared to other episodes from this show, it’s not quite up there.

THE GOOD

  • Iinchou continues to be my favourite
  • Gal girls are slowly making their way up the ladder though…

THE BAD

  • Nothing negative to report, just weaker episode in comparison to others thus far

Episode Score: 4/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

This was interesting and more interesting and then…THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?! So to start off, the “loving(?)” rivalry between Ayaka and Himeno was a fun first half, it had some good humour in there and some perfect facial expressions. Then the second half starts with the merfolk and we’re shown that the girls apparently don’t wear tops amongst themselves, only when encountering others (lucky bastards…), which was weird. Furthermore they do this offering thing where presumably the Antarcticans make a robot claiming to be that very god for some reason? It was a little out of place, didn’t make any sense and wasn’t explained. And then the episode just randomly ends with Manami’s baby sister playing a game with her imaginary friend? O…kay?

THE GOOD

  • Great first half, really enjoyed the Ayaka character
  • More mermaid ecchi

THE BAD

  • Completely nonsensical final 7-8 minutes

Episode Score: 4/5

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.8) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

Well thankfully there’s a lot of promise again with this show and it just might’ve saved itself because it did all this without even really having Kuro as a factor in it. First off, the mermaid story was fantastic, I loved the natural relationship formed between the mermaid and the sailor she saved, it was a beautiful little story. On top of that, we have Aletta finally finding a second job, helping out Sarah no less, so there’s a cool matchup! There’s some growth going on here and Kuro wasn’t there to facilitate that growth. She was there momentarily and played her role perfectly, but we’ve yet to really see her at her full potential yet, which I’m sure will be soon.

THE GOOD

  • Great story between the mermaid and the sailor she saves
  • Aletta’s future is bright and it shows with the happy nature around the show

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

Not the best episode I’ve seen from the show, but nothing terrible either. There just wasn’t anything specific I could point out to you as something cool or interesting that happened, beyond the call back of that crystal monster from earlier in the season, which appears to be the big conflict of the show now. Other than that, we had a funny little bicycle learning session and a classic walking in on girls changing scene that gets parodied to hell here. But yeah, nothing too special this week.

THE GOOD

  • Fun learning to ride a bike scene

THE BAD

  • Nothing special happened, just an average filler episode.

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

The idea of Victo’s hometown being either completely fake or somehow 32 years back in time is quite the curious concept and very mysterious. I’m not quite sure where this is going to go, especially when Kiri has no data coming up on the scanners, so a Horologue at first glance doesn’t appear to be involved. Either way, it made for an interesting episode, one where there was some funny bits and some emotional bits, not to mention a ton of guilt. It’s hard for me to decide how I feel about the majority of this episode when no reveal or conclusion has been reached yet. We’ll have to see next week what’s really going on here.

THE GOOD

  • Very interesting concept of a town backwards in time

THE BAD

  • A little too much on the guilty stuff, but we’ll see next week if there’s a payoff

Episode Score: 4/5

New Game!! (Ep.8)

THOUGHTS

This week pretty much focuses solely on Momiji, which has made me come to the decision that I don’t like the new additions to the series. Naru hasn’t really done much to warrant anything, but Momiji’s arrival has set in motion a cliche I really have a tough time dealing with, the rival who’s always upset at the main character. It’s not funny to me, as many times as the show tries to make it so, it also doesn’t help I think her character just isn’t all that interesting either. She breaks the flow of the cast and it showed this week, despite an over-the-top maid cafe attempt. There were things to like, but they all came from the original cast, not Momiji.

THE GOOD

  • Maid cafe hilarity

THE BAD

  • Momiji really broke apart the good vibes I was getting and took the episode down a few pegs

Episode Score: 3/5

Week #7 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #7 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

This is the first episode I’ve watched of the show where I have more questions than I need to be asking. So in order:

  1. Was this dream world featuring real people and real events?
  2. Is everything we saw an illusion created by what this girl in her hospital bed hears?
  3. Is this place a mental hospital or a regular hospital?

But the most important question is this: Why are we supposed to care about these characters we saw in the dream world? Sure, the story was interesting enough that we were drawn in during the early stages, but once we learned Pol had his best friend Pot killed in order to become King, everything just gets flipped on its head, nothing makes sense and we’re just left questioning everything we saw. I didn’t hate the episode, but I really don’t know what to say about it, beyond pure confusion.

The art style in this episode was phenomenal though, absolutely beautiful.

THE GOOD

  • Beautiful art direction
  • Good start to the story

THE BAD

  • Climax of the story leaves too many questions and awkwardness

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Aho Girl (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

How the hell did we get two new characters that I’m into as well?! Well, technically the teacher has been around before, but this episode really got me going on her and now on top of that, there’s also the red-haired gal as well to add into the fray. The show just isn’t stopping its comedy, it’s funny every single week, keeps things fresh even though the concept itself seems so easy to get same-y with and there just isn’t a character I dislike, they all have their own respective charms. It’s going to be real hard to knock this off the #1 spot, folks.

THE GOOD

  • Two more characters I’m in love with
  • The dog section was hilarious

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

This was a pretty standard episode, nothing too special, but nothing that took away from things (other than a child-aged centaur completely topless with no nipples…) this week. The scary story section of the show certain stood out more than the somewhat failed attempt at fanservice with the classic swimsuit section of the episode. The show really didn’t do much with this opportunity, especially when we already got the girls in swimsuits before, but school swimsuits. There was an opening here to give the girls their own flair, but other than Himeno’s light pink elegant swimwear, Kyouko, Manami and especially Nozomi, they all wore very plain swimwear, so none of them really had a significant style to them, it was quite disappointing. But all in all I never lost my attention with this episode, it was a nice one but just didn’t do much to really stand out either.

THE GOOD

  • Fun section with the scary storytelling

THE BAD

  • Wasted opportunity to give the girls their own special design during the swimsuit section
  • Nothing special to stand out in this episode

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.7) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

SHE’S HERE! SHE’S FINALLY HERE!!! And she has single-handedly kept the show alive…for one more episode. I know her blank personality will mesh so well with Aletta, so I have to see how the next episode plays out. The first half was the same stuff I’ve been bored with, the second half just happened to incorporate Kuro into it. I really REALLY don’t want to see them introduce any new characters in the way they’ve been doing since Episode 1. I want an actual story that lasts the rest of the season and to concentrate on developing the chef and the two waitresses, stop wasting time on pointless character exposition and fifteen minutes of food porn.

THE GOOD

  • KURO!!!

THE BAD

  • Still continued its bland half-episodes in the first half

Episode Score: 3/5 ***STILL ON NOTICE***

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

I enjoyed this episode far more than I think most will. Obviously it’s chalk full with him instantly learning new spells and crafting A FUCKING GUNBLADE!!!, but I really enjoyed all of that. You got some fanservice with the girls in those…dresses? I mean Elze’s especially, you’re one quick tug away from those bottoms being completely off and it looked like she wasn’t wearing underwear at all! You had the fight where he learns Accel, the new (possibly villainous) girl, Leen showing him Program which is basically real-life coding and more fun stuff LIKE A FUCKING A GUNBLADE PERHAPS?!!! Yeah, this episode was awesome, I loved it.

THE GOOD

  • FUNBLADE!!! I mean…GUNBLADE!!!
  • Nice fanservice without the girls being completely naked
  • Cool new Null Magic for Touya to use

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this episode

Episode Score: 5/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

Another episode this week where I didn’t necessarily hate it, but man oh man were there some problems. First off, WE HAD AN INTERESTING VILLAIN AND THEY BEAT HIM EASILY AND NOW HE’S PRESUMABLY GONE!!! DAFUQ?!!! I really like Bill, I’ll never tire of villains with over-the-top evil facial expressions and the fact he fights like it’s a video game just makes him that much more interesting. But the fight really wasn’t what I was hoping for and it ended way too soon. Like seriously, what was the point in bringing him up if he was going to lose so easily? At least it made sense with Blaze because he joined their party afterwards. But this? This didn’t make much sense.

THE GOOD

  • I really liked Bill
  • Mixture of gaming references was cool

THE BAD

  • The fight offered nothing and ended terribly
  • Bill is a presumably one-episode villain?

Episode Score: 3.5/5

New Game!! (Ep.7)

THOUGHTS

A lot of fun in this episode, three fantastic bits here. First was Nene’s interview, which was so freaking adorable, especially in her thought process of Umiko possibly leading her into a trap, the whole scene was really funny and cute. Second was Christine’s moments where I’m falling in love with her more and more as time goes on this season. Her drunken silliness and her attempts to make nice with the character team, it was so funny. Lastly, we’ve got new hires! I’m not sure how I feel yet about two more characters in this already stacked cast of girls, but for the time being it seems all right, I just hope Momiji’s rivalry with Aoba doesn’t get in the way of things. Either way, this was a really fun episode

THE GOOD

  • Nene’s interview was off the charts adorable
  • Christine continues to slowly move up the ladder of the entire cast
  • New hires!!!

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Week #6 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #6 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Oh great, it’s a bullying episode. As I type this the show is five minutes in and I’m dreading a suicide story…

It ended up going that route, though luckily the girl in this episode doesn’t end up going through with it and falls into SBS before committing the final deed. It’s still a rough episode, as any episode featuring the psychotic breakdowns of a bullying victim, but the shows handles it and then proceeds to get as random as possible, turning the final stages of the episode into the most cliche bad 90’s anime show and I loved it. I did also appreciate the flip side of when she returns and her bullies are now being harassed incessantly by the people who stayed quiet for so long.

THE GOOD

  • Good take on bullying/suicide subject matter
  • Another lovely girl to be interested in

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Aho Girl (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Oddly enough, the show when it concentrates on ecchi actually puts out its worst episode of the season thus far. Funny thing though? It’s still a decent episode. The hot spring exchange and especially the dog being the first person ‘to get’ Akuru were very fun parts of the episode. The beach section was okay, I was kind of hoping they just censor out the sand penis Yoshiko made on a buried Iinchou, but oh well. The dance section as the end was dumb, that was easily the worst part of the season thus far.

And honestly? I’m shocked that Iinchou didn’t win, but yeah Yoshiko wins this episode’s swimsuit contest!

THE GOOD

  • Destruction of sand dicks
  • Teaching about dicks in the hot spring
  • A dog finally getting Akuru to stop being a dick for a few moments

THE BAD

  • Weaker part-episodes, especially the Bon Dance section

Episode Score: 4/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

This was quite the serious episode, especially during the second half. The first half was a fun little escapade of seeing what the various girls looked like with different haircuts. I have to admit, Manami in short hair without the halo is perfect, while Nozomi in long hair…kill it with fire! The second half though focuses on the girls when it comes to working in their spare time, Nozomi at the dojo, Kyouko helping her father who is a writer and Manami taking a job as a priestess to help keep her family afloat as her father is a painter and often slacks behind. It’s an interesting and very serious look at the situations some people in high school run into, especially when they’re children of low-income families. Wasn’t the most fun episode, but didn’t rub me the wrong way either.

THE GOOD

  • Realistic look on high-schoolers who have part-time jobs
  • Fun little escapade on hairstyles

THE BAD

  • Not really anything funny or cool in this episode

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Gamers! (Ep.5) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

Yeah, I gave this show enough chances. It had one really good episode but since then, the show has become an absolute bore and a complete mess of over-the-top dialogue. I enjoy the over-the-top, but in this show’s case, it doesn’t work, it actually comes off extremely annoying. Keita and Aguri specifically are just the worst and both of them would be #1 in their respective gender Worst Character award lists for the season, they’re horrific. The only saving grace has been Chiaki with her tendency to double-speak, but that’s nowhere near enough to get me interested in a terribly written rom-com that just happens to thread video games into it. So it’s time to go.

THE GOOD

  • Nothing beyond Chiaki

THE BAD

  • Annoying characters, annoying dialogue, the show all-around is extremely frustrating to watch

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED***

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

I’ve got to say that halfway into this show’s first season (if it ever gets more than the one), I cannot believe how much time it has devoted to absolutely nothing. For the first time the show has a full episode rather than two half-episodes mixed into one. And was it anything cool, exciting and story-driven? Nope, it was just 10 minutes of the customers arguing over what’s the best meal on a sandwich, including the freaking dessert girls! After that, the other 10 minutes was filler and Aletta showering/eating.

So because of that, this show after six episodes that slowly got more and more boring, it’s going on notice. This show as of right now was a great start but never does anything different so every episode gets staler and staler as the format never changes, just the characters and the food and none of these characters beyond Aletta shine enough to offset the same-y feeling.

THE GOOD

  • Aletta looking adorable in strawberry underwear

THE BAD

  • The show seems to refuse to change its format, thus it’s getting more and more boring each week
  • The arguments are dumb, I know it’s the point but that doesn’t mean it’s interesting to watch

Episode Score: 2/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

The more this show goes on, the more I like it. I can understand why people probably dislike it, the show is essentially that of the main character being as OP as OP gets. But for me, it’s fun watching this cast of characters go on epic quests and just wreck anything that comes into contact with them. 28 bandits? Paralyzed in an instant? Dragon? No prob, slice off its wings and giant laser beams for the win! It’s a show that doesn’t demand your attention and just tries to have a good ol’ time. The best way I can describe it, is that it’s an anime that plays like a JRPG does when you set it to the easiest difficulty and then on top of that use cheat codes to have your characters at a higher level to start off. It’s fun wrecking things, leaves more time for the good stuff, like using your phone to watch girls changing through the wall. Y’know, the important stuff.

THE GOOD

  • Continuing it’s glorious OP main character ways
  • Linze and Yae continue to get better as best girls

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

Easily the weakest episode in the series thus far, which is easy to say when there’s zero fighting, nothing but dialogue and a lot of drivel when it comes to whether Mina is really Victo’s wife and Kiri’s mother, not to mention whether Victo truly loves her or not, whether she really is his wife or not. But hey, big brother Blaze is there to pick of the pieces.

THE GOOD

  • A little interest in regards to Victo and Mina’s past, as well as their relationship
  • Blaze and Kiri are too funny together

THE BAD

  • Zero fighting, too much dialogue

Episode Score: 3/5

New Game!! (Ep.6)

THOUGHTS

A nice episode that got pretty serious towards the end. The early focus is on Nene finally finishing her game and impressing the hell out of her friends and it’s an adorable section of the episode. What really hits hard though is the reality of business where the company wants to go in the direction that even though Aoba’s the character designer, they want Kou to do the marketing art for the game because she’s got a reputation and they’ve put a high budget on this game. It’s not personal, it’s about maximizing profits. Now I’m a little upset because you know they’re going the route of Aoba managing to convince them all she’s good enough, but I think it would be a great lesson for viewers if her efforts still ended in her coming up short. In reality, you will not win everything. Show them that.

THE GOOD

  • Cute section with Nene/Aoba/Hotaru
  • Very strong realistic moments with Aoba

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Week #5 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #5 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

HOW IS THIS SHOW CONTINUING TO SURPRISE ME?!! Again, I thought I had gotten used to this show and then it comes out of nowhere with the twist at the end. Granted, that’s because I kinda forgot about Katsumi seeing Mirei and us not seeing her face, but man that threw me off! The story of Mirei herself is an interesting one because it shines a light on what so many celebrities probably feel as their lives get busier and busier and they feel their freedom slowly slip away. The idea of just wanting to live a normal life is one I can completely understand, so I totally feel for Mirei. But holy shit I thought we were getting treated to something sweet and while we did, I never thought of the possibility that Mirei had been in that coma for a lot longer than any other girl has been thus far. What this does though is raise so many questions pertaining to the “illness”. How long has this been a thing for? Why hasn’t anyone visited her world until now? If she’s been in that world for what had to have been at least 50 years, how did she never notice she hadn’t been aging? There’s a lot to think about.

THE GOOD

  • Interesting look on the life of a sudden celebrity
  • What a twist at the end!

THE BAD

  • There’s a pile of questions popping up from this dream world and they’re not getting answered at all yet

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Aho Girl (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Well, it’s beach time next week, so the first contest of the season is on its way! I don’t see how Iinchou doesn’t win that, but who knows, right? Either way, I’m starting to think this show’s getting a bit repetitive and old now…AHAHAHAHA, NO I’M NOT!!! The antics continue to make me laugh, the show really is like an even more ridiculous Three Stooges kind of show with more characters and well…ecchi, because Japan loves boobs and butts. I’m actually wondering if this will turn into a legitimate harem, as Yoshiko and Iinchou clearly have feelings for him, but we’re not 100% sold on Sayaka yet. Hell, I’m starting to wonder if Mom’s going to get involved at the rate things are going. Sheesh!

THE GOOD

  • The laughs still aren’t stopping
  • I will never tire of over-the-top physical violence
  • The show does a great job with its ecchi, it never fully tips its hand

THE BAD

  • Nothing as usual this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

While the episode was not a shining star of an episode, the ridiculousness of Quetzalcoatl being the inquisitive girl she is with a smile that could kill (but not really), it really sold me on sticking with it, even though the show at times can drag on quite a bit. I’ve now got two characters who are really interesting to me, Quetzie (I’m so tempted to just call her Lucoa, cause I’ve got Kobayashi-san still in my head) now stands next to Nozomi as the two characters keeping me invested and of course this week we get them both having a dressup montage! I think what this episode really did though was show that moment when we were little and had that new kid from another country join our class. It brought up a few interesting points and then also made fun of a bunch of stuff along the way, like shitty monster movies.

THE GOOD

  • I really like Quetzalcoatl, she brings out the best in Himeno
  • Some decent commentary on race and politics

THE BAD

  • The show still needs to work on its comedy, there isn’t enough to smile at

Episode Score: 4/5

Gamers! (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Unfortunately, this entire episode is devoted to Keita and Karen, essentially anime Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. While there is the odd funny moment and a nice message about the different ways you can enjoy video games, those two together are absolutely terrible, they don’t bring out the best in each other, they bring out the worst and it’s not that fun to watch in the same way Tasuku, Chiaki and Aguri make things fun. So this episode all in all was quite the dud.

Because of that, I’m going to put the show back on notice. It’s a lighter version however, I don’t think a bad episode next week will make it drop it, unless it’s REALLY bad, but I need to put this show back on notice because I need to remind myself and everyone reading this that the show is an extremely mixed bag, at least in my opinion.

THE GOOD

  • Nothing too major to speak of this week

THE BAD

  • I cannot stand this Karen/Keita relationship, it terribly done and not funny when it feels like that’s what they’re trying to do
  • None of the other major players even appear this week beyond Chiaki in a daydream

Episode Score: 2.5/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

I think at this point unless a story really starts to kick in, this show will continue to be a 3/5 on average show. The sidestories are now getting okay at best, the characters are not being fleshed out too much, hell Aletta and the chef are not really being expanded upon either. Also, we’re still learning nothing about the origins of the restaurant and how this inter-dimensional door exists. The show itself is nothing too terrible, it’s just not offering as much as a top-tier show does.

THE GOOD

  • The gladiator was ridiculously over the top with his love for that rice bowl, I loved it

THE BAD

  • Nothing special happening again
  • No elf waitress still

Episode Score: 3/5

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Poor Kohaku, he’s going to be tapping out every episode it seems. This was a blatant harem episode if I ever did see one, two of the girls got a little closer to Touya this week and the first half of the episode was devoted to the girls getting their clothes finally melted away by green slimes, as we knew it would eventually happen. There wasn’t anything special about this episode, so if you were looking for something meaningful, this wasn’t the one, it was strictly a fun, harem episode of the show.

THE GOOD

  • Green slimes did their job as well as you could ask without giving the show an 18+ rating
  • Linze and Yae are starting to step ahead of the rest

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Another good episode for some really nice fighting, but what took the cake this week was the completely randomness that was Blaze’s backstory and eventual return to his goody-two-shoes ways. This is why I continue to like this show, it actually reminds me more and more of Bungou Stray Dogs where it’s good action that gets real serious and then out of nowhere hits you hard with the random comedy. I love it and surprisingly continue to love it even though I’m still waiting for that proverbial shoe to drop.

THE GOOD

  • Blaze’s backstory and face turn were so terribly cliche and random it was so funny
  • Fight scenes continue to be extremely cool to watch

THE BAD

  • The deus ex machina in this show is getting a little overwhelming

Episode Score: 4/5

New Game!! (Ep.5)

THOUGHTS

Well we almost made it halfway through the season before someone got naked. This was a pure fanservice episode through and through, I mean sure there was a little character building with Hifumi learning to manage the team and Hajime/Aoba getting better at coming up with design ideas, but in the end the whole episode is memorable for either kisses or near-kisses. I’m not complaining because I’m okay with that kind of stuff, but this episode isn’t exactly the best one by any stretch.

THE GOOD

  • Small character building with the four main girls
  • If you wanted ecchi, you got it this week

THE BAD

  • And yet, Kou after five episodes has only been without pants on once. Shocking!

Episode Score: 4.5/5
