Week #4 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #4 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Well think was less depressing than last week, still a very real and downright tough look at the life of a single woman, but with a much better ending than last week’s, so I’m not desperate for a crazy comedy anime like Aho Girl to cheer me back up. I don’t know what this red-haired girl’s name was, I don’t think it was referenced in the episode, but man was she an interesting character. The idea that someone who on the outside looks so happy and full of life, yet alone she’s a solitary, depressed woman hellbent on ruining herself after the troubles of dealing with a relationship ending due to her physical appearance, something a lot of women fight with at some point in their life. The anime takes it very seriously, while still retaining its charm and over-the-top appearance, even with the crazy happy-go-lucky donut fairy girl, you understood the darkness behind that character.

Now aside from the story contained in this episode, we’re a third the way through. Are we actually going to get any information on the world itself, on Haruto, on Lily, on anything? Cause I’m starting to get a tad bit impatient.

THE GOOD

  • Extremely well-written episode looking at some very serious issues
  • Female this week was a great character as well

THE BAD

  • I’m starting to get impatient waiting for more information on the world and the characters in it

Episode Score: 5/5

Aho Girl (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

I can’t get enough of this ridiculous fucking show! I’m now sad that it’s only half the normal time, I want so much more content! This time around, the whole sneaking into Akuru’s bedroom at night was the sketch that really did it, the fact that after everything that happened, Yoshiko just decided right then and there that she’s sleepy and fuck it, time to go to bed…RIGHT NEXT TO HIM!!! I just can’t get enough of this comedy, guys.

THE GOOD

  • The comedy doesn’t stop!
  • Iinchou makes everything so much better than it already is

THE BAD

  • Not a damn thing again this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

A little better this week, but still suffering from the usual problems I have with the show. While the first half dealt with some real problems teenage girls have and the second half was all about Nozomi (which I’ll never stop liking), in the end the show is still very slow, there’s too much filler and nothing really gets accomplished. At least now with Quetzalcoatl, a snake girl being brought into the fold, there’s now something to add to the mix.

Also seriously, the hell is with Quetzalcoatl being a named character in two anime shows the last 12 months?! Has Japan been on an Aztec binge recently?

THE GOOD

  • Interesting commentary from the first half of the show, aka girls exploring their bodies
  • SNAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!

THE BAD

  • Still very slow, with loads of filler

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Gamers! (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Um…I’m in love. Chiaki both before and after her transformation is a secret beauty, not to mention a massive gamer, so how is that not super hot? Come on! Waifu daydreaming aside, this episode definitely had its flaws and I think this will the brunt of the show. This is not a gaming anime, this is a high school romance drama that video games are a link between. The idiocy of these characters (especially Keita) and the tons of misunderstandings are going to annoy me as they continue to happen, but for the time being the show is maintaining enough of a comedic vibe and some really entertaining reactions and expressions.

THE GOOD

  • Quite possibly the best girl in Chiaki has arrived

THE BAD

  • I’m starting to get annoyed with Keita being the virgin moron character, not to mention the overwhelming number of misunderstandings

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Another weaker episode compared to the first two and again another episode where this other waitress still hasn’t even appeared yet, not to mention the dragon woman, who I thought was going to play a part in an eventual story with the show. The lizardman section was extremely boring, as it was being told like a Discovery channel wildlife documentary, which are always boring. The elf girl was a little interesting, but I kinda lost interest when the vegan route got thrown at me. It’s a tough episode to swallow, but there wasn’t anything damning about it at all.

THE GOOD

  • Anime can never have enough beautiful elven women

THE BAD

  • Lizardman section was very boring
  • Elf section was full of vegan stuff

Episode Score: 3/5

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

The episode was doing very well leading into the second half and then it just took off! Yumina is a very amusing character, not to mention the grounds of her engagement to Touya is actually quite fair. Her intent is to be his wife, but when he turns 18, if he still doesn’t have an interest in her, then her parents won’t fight it. I’m actually surprised the writers included that in there. Then on top of that, the continual OP nature of this team continues and now Touya has the best summon in the world and it’s a white tiger who’s turned into an adorable kitty to blend into normal, everyday life. This show continues to just be a fun little getaway for me and surprisingly has yet to really do anything wrong.

THE GOOD

  • Yumina, albeit underage, is an interesting character and her motivations are actually fine
  • Kohaku, that is all

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

So the longer this goes, the more confusing it gets. Well that’s time-based anime for ya! Mina apparently being Aisrehdar’s sister and alive for thousands of years now, I guess that’s a thing? Also seriously, do you expect us to believe that in the thousands upon thousands of years she’s been alive, only NOW with Victo she’s fallen in love?! Dumb shit aside, the episode was still good, a couple surprises, some decent battles, there’s still something there, albeit the show needs to get on track again, as it’s gotten quite confusing all of a sudden.

THE GOOD

  • Continues to have great battle sequences
  • Mina for sure being in love with Victo makes her less annoying now that we know she’s genuine

THE BAD

  • I’m so confused as to all this historical nonsense between the two girls
  • How is Kiri still alive as this episode goes on?

Episode Score: 3.5/5

New Game!! (Ep.4)

THOUGHTS

Can’t complain when an episode becomes very central to Hifumi, now can we? The first half with Hajime and Yun specifically was fun, but the second half with Hifumi finally hitting that breaking point and becoming the new team leader for the character team, that was the moment I really enjoyed. Of course, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying the potential of a Hifumi/Kou shipping, though to be fair I’ll never let Kou go anywhere without Rin after last season. That aside, a pretty fun episode, the show getting back on track with its light-hearted nature and returning to form.

THE GOOD

  • Hifumi breaking out of her shell
  • The moe was in full swing this week

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Week #3 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #3 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

I don’t want to give this episode a 5/5 rating. It depressed me very hard, made me extremely sad. But if an episode, in a single 20-minute timeframe where the main character focused in the episode never existed in the series at this point, that being Kayo. If that episode can elicit an emotional reaction as strong as it did, aka I got really depressed and nearly cried, which I rarely ever experience that level of emotional distress from an entire series let alone one episode, well then that episode’s certainly a good one. What a painful and unfair story and unfortunately a reality for many kids who are afflicted with life-ending diseases before they’re truly allowed to live. Makes you appreciate your own life that much more…

…Fuck this was my second episode that I watched during this current sitting. I need a break, my heart’s broken.

THE GOOD

  • Extremely emotional
  • Kayo is such a wonderful character

THE BAD

  • The sheer depression of such a life-loving soul being forced into an early death, it’s not fair and it frustrates me, even with the knowledge that this character is 100% fictional

Episode Score: 5/5

Aho Girl (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

So this is the show I watched after that depressing episode of 18if. And boy am I glad this show exists this season, I need this so badly. The over the top comedy is so good that it’s impossible not to smile, even after a depressing episode minutes before. This show really does everything I want in a comedy, hell it even has its random ecchi just for good measure. 18if brings the emotions, Aho Girl brings uncontrollable laughter.

THE GOOD

  • I’m not sure if Yoshiko is a pervert or just stupid, either way she’s awesome
  • Her mother is just as insane as she is, who knew?

THE BAD

  • No Iinchou this week

Episode Score: 5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

This is as slice of life as it gets, nothing special at all happening this week, just a plain ol’ episode of anime. Sure, the kids were adorable and the terrible explanations given for why girls kiss or don’t kiss, there wasn’t anything really to sink your teeth into, it was just an average run-of-the-mill slice of life episode where nothing of note happens. And considering two of the three main cast members weren’t even around in the episode, you can tell this was a bit of a throwaway.

THE GOOD

  • Lots of cuteness
  • The kissing debacle was entertaining

THE BAD

  • Barebones slice of life episode, can be a bit of a drag
  • Two of three main characters absent

Episode Score: 3/5

Gamers! (Ep.2) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

WOW! What a turn-around! Specifically with the sidestory between Tasuku and Aguri, it’s such an adorable story! The idea that the overly nerdy Tasuku in middle school before becoming the class hottie he is now, Aguri already knew him, loved him before his change and even changed herself just for him. That’s such a cute romance story that could’ve been its own anime, I think. Along with that, the comedy got better, the expressions and reactions got better and the show became more about having fun with games than being serious. That’s the kind of show I wanted to watch in the first place, I hope it tries to stick around this route more often than not.

THE GOOD

  • A fantastic romance sidestory with Tasuku and Aguri
  • All the Arc System Works games, it’s drawing me in so easily

THE BAD

  • I’m still struggling to like Keita, he’s a bit too much at times

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Things are getting more interesting now with the restaurant. We now know the chef is not the first, the restaurant has existed long before and maybe for more than just one or two generations. This episode didn’t bring anything nearly as interesting as the dragon girl or the adventurer girl, but not every episode has to knock it out of the park. It’s still a nice sit-down anime that makes me want to eat. A lot. And I’m okay with it just being that.

THE GOOD

  • A little more interesting information on the origins of the restaurant, really makes me curious about where the show’s going to take this narrative

THE BAD

  • Where is this elf girl the OP keeps showing?!!!

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Yet another above average episode. A few filler segments like the lost girl that kicked off the episode and led to nothing, but all in all a nice watch. The emphasis on shogi kind of took me back a bit (I’m really bad at it…), but in the end there was an interesting setup with the ruins and the magical beast. I’m curious as to what the secret of the royal capital being moved was, I imagine it’ll be the end motivations perhaps of this series, wherever it goes. Also, I’ve noticed a lot of people don’t like Touya because he’s basically being given every power imaginable. I on the other hand actually enjoy it, it’s like watching someone play a video game with cheats on, it’s funny to watch.

THE GOOD

  • The ruins and magical beast were a good plot line for the episode
  • Every character continues to stay on the positive track

THE BAD

  • Over-emphasis of shogi
  • No new characters

Episode Score: 4/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

Another interesting episode, naturally this one starting to get into Victo’s origins a lot more, especially with the revelation that Mina just might actually be his daughter, in which case, hoo boy this is going to get awkward real fast. Also, we appear to have met Chronos already, at least that’s what I got out of the final moments of this episode. So in that case, take enjoyment in the fact that Victo disrobed God and had her at metaphorical gunpoint. God I’m really loving this show.

THE GOOD

  • We’re now starting to question and hypothesize things in the show, like Mina’s true identity for example
  • Victo basically disrobing God is pretty funny
  • ORANGE JUICE!!!

THE BAD

  • I really don’t like Blaze, his voice is extremely annoying

Episode Score: 4/5

New Game!! (Ep.3)

THOUGHTS

A much better episode than last week, back to the cuteness and comedy that I always love. This episode especially took a good run with Umiko and Nene, them being programmers and all. I used to dislike Nene in the first season, now I’m starting to come around on her, either that or because she has a real goal now, she’s less random and unbearable. I’m still wavering a little on Aoba getting a little too depressed over nothing, but she’s a teenage girl in a ridiculous role, what else would happen? So I’m letting that go for the time being, so long as it doesn’t get too extreme, like it did last week.

THE GOOD

  • Back to form with the moe and comedy
  • Nene and Umiko really standing out this week

THE BAD

  • Still a little depression squeaking in

Episode Score: 4/5

The Reflection Wave One (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I cannot believe how bad this was. Stan Lee was a part of this project, how can the writing by this bad? The animation is one of the worst I’ve ever seen, sure I get they’re trying to go the comic route, but for an anime, this is absolutely horrendous. The music was over played, there’s a lot of awkward pausing and even the fights weren’t that good. There isn’t a single thing this episode got that was right and the superhero genre is one of the easiest to do!

I’m sorry Stan Lee, I love ya, but if you had any actual input on this show (because I believe it’s just your name that’s really attached to this), you’ve really lost touch. Not only that but the crew you worked with are akin to college kids learning to animate, because this looked so bush league compared to everything else out there. Wow was this ever horrible!

Enjoy the Bryan Alvarez reference! (if anyone gets it)

THE GOOD

  • I’ve got nothing good to say about this

THE BAD

  • The animation sucks
  • The characters suck
  • The writing sucks
  • The show looks like it was done by young animators and writers just starting out

Episode Score: MINUS FIVE STARS!!! ***DROPPED***

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou (Ep.3) *On Notice*

THOUGHTS

I’M DONE! I’ve stopped this show at 8:36 because the show decided to just casually throw in a story where a child is murdered, a dog then kills the murderer in response and gets beaten to death by other humans in response. If a show is willing to go that far down when on the surface it looks like a light-hearted slice of life show, I can’t support it. You can’t go that far down the horrific and depression side of the things and still be looked at as a light-hearted show. That’s bullshit and now I’m pissed off and I need to go watch Aho Girl again just to take the edge off!

THE GOOD

  • Fuck off, anime!

THE BAD

  • Murder casually tossed into a light-hearted slice of life, what were the writers thinking?!

Episode Score: 1/5 ***DROPPED! GTFO!!!***

Week #2 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #2 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

What a morbid and horrific episode. I will admit the amount of confusion after this episode is really high, all of a sudden we’ve gone from what we thought was an innocent main character thrown into this dream world, to an almost psychotic and yet bored main character who has zero problem taking another’s life, even if it means that person dies in the real world too. The horrific imagery really sets the tone for how strange this show will be at times, which makes me wonder what other extremes the show will eventually go to. What I’m not sure I like though is how it almost feels that none of these witches will re-appear in the show, so all these women he’s helping are just gone. Either way, this show is EXTREMELY interesting, so we’ll see what happens next.

THE GOOD

  • Horrific imagery used properly to set a tone, not just for the sake of gore
  • The psychotic nature of these characters brings interest towards them

THE BAD

  • I’m not sure how I feel about the MC going from innocent to a murderer in one episode

Episode Score: 3.5/5

Aho Girl (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Yep, this is a show that will be in my top 5 all season, there’s no doubt about it. The insanity, the comedy, the expressions, it’s all really good here. And like I said last week, that disciplinary committee girl is definitely becoming my favourite. Though I will admit she turned to the dark side a lot faster than I expected…

THE GOOD

  • I’m in love with the disciplinary committee girl…
  • The comedy isn’t stopping

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Much like Demi-chan wa Kataritai, this show is a fun monster girl comedy that does take a look at race differentiation and those trying to find a normal life within the rest of the public. I think the second half of this episode really solidified that for me, with the whole section related to merfolk and especially towards the end with the one girl wanting to be able to walk like the other races can. It’s an interesting perspective. And hey, I can’t complain that at least a quarter of the episode was swimsuit-related too! But it was all school swimsuits, so there’s no contest this episode.

THE GOOD

  • Nozomi really started to stand out this episode
  • I really like the race differentiation issues that the show brings up, it’s a good conversation to have
  • Swimsuits!!!

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Gamers! (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

This is such a weird one to judge, I feel like there’s a lot here for me to like, but the problem I’m having is that I cannot stand these characters and the general vibe I’m getting from the show. I feel like I was supposed to be smiling and laughing during the episode with all this “comedy”, but I don’t feel like there was anything to laugh at. Aside from the cleavage girl playing Guilty Gear, there wasn’t anything piquing my interest at all and that mystifies me to no end, given the subject matter.

So even though this episode did nothing for me, because of the subject material, I’ll give the show one more shot to recover from what was a weird first episode. We’ll see if it was a fluke or not.

THE GOOD

  • A show about gaming? Sign me up!
  • Guilty Gear and Counter-Strike referencing

THE BAD

  • None of the characters come off as interesting at all to me
  • The comedy failed in every possible way

Episode Score: 2.5/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Hajimete no Gal (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I don’t get the general anime community sometimes. A show that I really enjoyed its first episode in 18if has a rating of 5.78 on MAL and yet this atrocious show has a 7.45?! Even I have to admit when the sexual comedy is getting to be WAY too much and it goes above and beyond the boundaries here. From this episode, while I will say that by the end of the episode, the show had gotten better, the over-usage of “virgin” and “pervert” were starting to really get on my nerves. Yukana does seem like an interesting girl, but the lead character in Junichi is on the wrong side of being an over-the-top character. So much of this show is extremely annoying and even coming from a guy who loves ecchi anime, this one is just plain bad!

THE GOOD

  • The concept of “gal” girls brings out characters we don’t normally see and that’s interesting

THE BAD

  • An over-reliance on virgin and pervert themes
  • The sexual comedy wasn’t funny at all, nor was the over-the-top comedy

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED***

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I’m really liking this show, so far a series of half-episodes introducing new characters that are customers of the restaurant. It’s a nice pace and doesn’t demand too much of your attention, it’s just cool little fantasy backstories leading into people going nuts about food, one step away from their clothes blowing off a la Shokugeki no Souma. So far, each of these unique characters have been quite interesting in their own ways, the girl this week was a badass, the guy this week was noble and quite silly when discovering the place. My only worry is that the show for sure will stray away from this to tell an actual story and I hope it doesn’t break the good run it’s having so far.

THE GOOD

  • Two new customers were really good additions
  • I like how the show isn’t placing any emphasis on anyone, they’re all just regular people

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I don’t think this show will be anything overly special, nor does it have to be. As of two episodes in, it’s just a nice fantasy harem with a silly premise of a smartphone being able to be used in that world. I see the show intends to make Touya able to do almost anything so he can play the jack-of-all-trades role, that way he can solve every problem. It’s a little cliche, but as of right now the characters are working with it well enough that I can look past it. I’m seeing a pretty good show, right in the middle of my rankings.

THE GOOD

  • I really like Yae, she’s a fun samurai girl
  • I’m not seeing any annoying flaws thus far

THE BAD

  • By getting a lot of money at the end, I feel like maybe there’s a rush to move them all forward

Episode Score: 4/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

The show surprisingly isn’t letting up, I think I might actually have to take this show as a serious contender now. With the addition of Mina, we’ve got a pretty good trio that brings the best out of each other, not to mention that at any moment this could all come crashing down with her betrayal, which is being heavily foreshadowed. I’m still a little sour that the girl from last week is gone though. But yeah, this show is doing really well thus far, the design of everything look so good, the battles are good and the comedy’s pretty good too.

THE GOOD

  • Good trio of characters going on
  • Always nice to see some boy butt going on instead of a parade of naked girls

THE BAD

  • DARLING!!! I just had a Monster Musume relapse…

Episode Score: 4/5

Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Normally, I give a show another shot to correct itself, but in all honesty, this show is extremely boring. Beautiful, perhaps the best looking show this season, but man is it a drag to watch. The battles are good, but again, everything else is bland and boring and if the show is at best 25% fighting, the other 75% is boring. Do the math, that ain’t good at all. I can see where many will enjoy this anime, but it’s not catching me early on and I’m not going to waste a half-hour of my life listening to endless dialogue that (in my opinion) goes nowhere.

THE GOOD

  • ufotable once again are the kings of anime art direction

THE BAD

  • The entire episode after the early minutes of battle was a bore, running at a snail’s pace
  • Unless you’re super into anime guys, I don’t feel like there’s much to grab onto with these characters, aside from their muscular physiques

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED***

New Game!! (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

I actually didn’t like this episode very much, in fact it might have been the weakest episode in the entire series, counting the first season. The reason why is because the core of the show was gone for most of the episode, that being the cute comedy. Sure, Hajime’s little segment had a moment with Hifumi, but realistically speaking this episode was all very dramatic and that’s not why I fell in love with this series the first place. I really hope this is just a minor bump to move the team forward, I want the show to stay on the comedic track it’s been on since Episode 1 when the show first started.

Oh and Kou didn’t have her pants off this week, so the whole point of the counter’s kind of already been ruined, so no more of that.

THE GOOD

  • The sleeping bag makes a return!

THE BAD

  • Way too serious for what I’m used to with this show
  • No pantsless Kou, so sad…

Episode Score: 3/5

Nora to Oujo to Noraneko Heart (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

It’s a 3-minute short so I won’t have it on my list every week. But is it worth watching? For the fact the show is a harem where the main character was turned into a cat, yes it absolutely is. For that ridiculous alone, I love it!

THE GOOD

  • Ridiculous plot, condensed into three minutes of slapstick comedy, it’s perfect!

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report, a fun short if you want to keep up with it

Episode Score: 4/5 ***DROPPED (SHORT)***

The Reflection Wave One (Ep.1)

Debuts on July 22nd

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou (Ep.2)

THOUGHTS

Once again, while the show wasn’t terrible, it really didn’t draw me in that much. While Touken Ranbu got the boot right away, I’m giving this show one more shot before I drop it. I do actually see something in this show that intrigues me enough to want it to get better. The psychic abilities awakening in the main character, the diverse cast of characters, there’s something there I would really like, but the writing so far has been very slow and lazy in my opinion. So yeah, one more week to see if it picks up.

THE GOOD

  • The continuing expansion of characters adds more interesting faces
  • The main character’s awakening to psychic powers adds some intrigue

THE BAD

  • The episode as a whole was still rather boring, I wasn’t paying attention all that much

Episode Score: 2.5/5 ***ON NOTICE***

Week #1 – Summer Anime 2017

Week #1 has arrived with this Summer anime season. What’s in store this week?!

Just like every week, I’ll be watching my selected shows for the season and giving my brief feelings on the episode, along with things I liked and things I didn’t like. So let’s get a’watchin’!

***WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!!!***

18if (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I’m really trying to understand how after one episode, this show is already at a 5 rating on MAL. What did this show do that made so many people upset? For starters, the art style is unbelievable, it’s so trippy and cool, like a mixture of Persona and Alice in Wonderland. I’m also quite interested in what this world truly is, it appears to be another dimension where you can only reach it in your dreams and “witches” lock themselves away in it, their real bodies being comatose. What’s also interesting is how it appears the main character Haruto might be a Tidus from Final Fantasy X level of character, a dream within a dream, as “leaving” the dream world just had him wake up…in the dream world. I’m extremely interested in this anime going forth right now and I’m absolutely perplexed as to why this show in particular has garnered such horrendously low ratings.

THE GOOD

  • Amazing art style
  • Curious concepts of dreams and the relation to the real world

THE BAD

  • A bit confusing at the start

Episode Score: 4/5

Aho Girl (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Well now, that sure was a flurry of…something! It’s like Azumanga Daioh, but shorter, more stupidity and more ecchi. I have few complaints about any of these things. I can tell I’m really going to like this show, it doesn’t overstay its welcome and because of that, there’s enough time to get the necessary jokes (and boob squeezing apparently) into the episode. A good watch it seems for comedy fans.

THE GOOD

  • Crazy over-the-top stupidity, what’s to complain about?
  • I actually think the Disciplinary Committee girl is going to be the best in terms of chemistry with Yoshiko

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Centaur no Nayami (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

If you’re looking for cute, this anime’s gonna have you covered, at least if you can tolerate monster girls. As of this first episode, the feeling I’m getting from this show is a very casual, light-hearted comedy anime, which fits perfectly with the fantasy setting of demi-humans being the only ones around. So far, the main cast is okay, Nozomi is my standout right now, while Himeno and Kyouko have some work to do, coming off a little more one-dimensional in their characters. I was worried the show would go crazy into ecchi territory, but regardless of the first half’s subject material, it’s so far been very tame. This’ll be a fun show to watch, I think.

THE GOOD

  • Cute girls doing cute things, it always works
  • Nice light-hearted style that works very well with the setting
  • Nozomi is awesome

THE BAD

  • Other lead characters are a little boring thus far, need to be fleshed out a bit more

Episode Score: 4/5

Isekai Shokudou (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

There’s certainly going to be a lot to like here, but we’re waiting until things start moving along first. We’ve got an adorable girl in Aletta, the sexy and very intriguing dragon woman and the cook himself is quite an interesting character as well. With this weird fantasy restaurant concept looking quite interesting, it’s now a matter of a story pushing through, along with more story and characters brought into the frame. But I really like what I see here after the first episode, this show will definitely be on my radar as it moves forward this season.

THE GOOD

  • Aletta is super cute
  • I really like the idea of a fantasy world restaurant, brings a lot of potential in terms of characters

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report beyond the first episode not having a ton of story

Episode Score: 4/5

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

It’s nothing special yet, but I really like this show. It’s a fun, calm show with albeit an overused premise, but delivers it in a more casual, light-hearted manner, where shows like Re:Zero and Konosuba take these concepts into a more extreme direction. Granted, we’re one episode in, so who knows where this anime will actually go, I personally hope it stays in this quiet, fun little form, but you know the overwhelming evil will have to show up at some point. As the characters go, there’s nothing special thus far, but no one’s also annoying me either. It’s an above-average show after one episode.

THE GOOD

  • The concept, while overdone, it’s done in a more calm manner and ends up feeling just a little new and fresh
  • The cell phone concept leaves a lot of room for interesting possibilities

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Episode Score: 4/5

Jikan no Shihaisha (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

Wow! I thought this would’ve been an extremely pretentious time travel kind of action anime, but instead what we got is a gorgeous, hipsterish action anime with a little comedy in there as well. I love the visuals of this show, holy hell the Persona 3 vibes I’m getting are off the charts! The music is also fantastic, keeps you invested in every moment. The main cast in Kiri and Victo are a good pair, need some more fleshing out as the season goes on, but they’re already in a good spot. I seriously hop Koyuki isn’t a one-and-done, because she is absolutely stunning and I want to see her become a part of their team. Great first impression from a show I had my reservations with.

THE GOOD

  • Visuals and music were fantastic!
  • Characters off to a great start

THE BAD

  • Nothing to report this week

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

So the best I can say about this episode is that, well…it’s really cool looking. That’s about it thus far, there was nothing to completely turn me off the show, but man oh man was this a cold introduction for someone like myself who knows absolutely nothing about this series. I mean, I kinda get that they’re some time travelling warriors that stop other time travelers from screwing up history, but why are they all looking like they belong in the very era they’re in? There’s no explanation to their origins in the way a show like Drifters did it. But yeah, the show seems like a fun ride, I just hope in the next episode or two I get something to hold onto.

THE GOOD

  • Holy crap this show looks gorgeous!
  • The action sequences are very well done

THE BAD

  • There’s no story yet, I don’t have a clue what’s going on
  • None of the characters interest me yet

Episode Score: 3/5

Made In Abyss (Ep.1)

Not available on Crunchyroll

Musashino! (Ep.1)

Seems to have completely disappeared off this season’s run.

Nanamaru Sanbatsu (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I get the feeling this is going to be a show that I won’t keep, it has a similar essence to it that the overly intense sports anime like Kuroko no Basket has and those shows have never worked out with me for whatever reason. I also cannot stand the main character thus far, he’s way too meek and the anime plays it up way too much. I think for fans, this is a show that some will really get into, but for me, it’s not really something I’m interested in.

THE GOOD

  • The quiz concept was a great idea, would’ve worked with me in a different way

THE BAD

  • However, the emphasis on the time in between answers and the overly intense nature of this, it’s a poor fit for me

Episode Score: 2/5 ***DROPPED***

New Game!! (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!

Hah…I missed them all so much. I’m glad to see not much has changed, though admittedly I’m a little sad to see there isn’t anyone joining their ranks at Eagle Jump just to make things a little crazier. At the same time, it’s nice to just be able to enjoy the first episode of a new season without anything major changing, it makes for a great comeback and with loads of nostalgia, it’s just a nice, peaceful watch, or at least this show is, since it’s a comedy and not some crazy action anime.

THE GOOD

  • Everything hasn’t changed and given that this show was my Best Show of its season, that’s a very good thing
  • If anything has changed however, it’s the show being just a little more expressive, especially with Hifumi

THE BAD

  • Nothing to complain about this week

Also, here’s a special thing I’m adding onto each episode of the anime. Let’s see if the number ever increases.

Episode Score: 4.5/5

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou (Ep.1)

THOUGHTS

I like the vibe I’m getting from the show, it comes off like an old-school 90s-era anime in terms of its style and honestly, its half-ass shitty writing, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (yet). But while I like the show’s concept and execution of it thus far, there needs to be more for me to dig my fingernails into, I want more comedy, I want more interesting characters and I want that extra reason to keep watching. For now, the show is easily safe, but a show like this will always be in danger of becoming quite stale and boring. We’ll see if this show can avoid getting that far down.

THE GOOD

  • The old-school vibes I get from the show are neat
  • Those three birds, I love ’em!

THE BAD

  • For a show this weird, there was a serious lack of comedy
  • Not a whole lot to grab onto yet

Episode Score: 3/5

2017 Summer Anime Preview

So we are just a couple weeks away from the start of the 2017 summer anime season! So before we get to the end of this current season, it’s time for me to preview all the anime listed to air during this season and see where my interest is at for each of them.

Before we get started however, I’m laying down a few ground rules:

  • If a show is a second season or further and I haven’t either watched the anime yet or dropped the previous season, I will not be previewing those shows.
  • I will try to preview as many as I can, but there may be a couple where the synopsis may turn me off before even clicking the link to the trailer.
  • Please understand that these trailers are all in Japanese and usually don’t come with subtitles, so a lot of what I talk about is more what I see and perceive rather than what’s actually being said and going on in the trailer.
  • Also understand that I am deciding on shows based on my own personal tastes. Obviously there will be shows you think are at the top of your list, but they don’t interest me and vice-versa.
  • At the end of each preview I will give the show a “Yay” or “Nay”. Should be self-explanatory as to which one means I’ll be watching those shows
  • And for any show that does get previewed on this list, even if I give it the go-ahead, if it’s not on Crunchyroll where I can easily access it on my PS4 (which makes my screencaps really easy too), I will not watch it and will not have it on my weekly reviews. I’m aware there are other routes, but my time is limited and I also don’t like resorting to torrents and such.

Anyways, let’s get this show on the road!

SYNOPSIS

No synopsis available

THOUGHTS – YAY

This trailer looks so Persona-esque, by that nature I immediately have an interest in it. If no synopsis gets released for the show before I post this article, then I’m going purely off the visuals and music and since it carries a familiar feeling that is EXTREMELY positive, I’m definitely interested in what this show has to offer.

Action Heroine Cheer Fruits

SYNOPSIS

The “local heroine fighter” of a certain city became popular and a national star. Because of this, “local heroines” debuted in various other places, and their action live events became a hit trend nationally.

The story is set in Hinano City, a tranquil area that cultivates fruits, but has lost its vitality. For the town she loves, high school girl Misaki Shirogane and other girls become local heroines (at the urging of Misaki’s aunt, the prefectural governor) and vow to produce action live events. The teen story depicts their strenuous efforts to revitalize their town.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

This is definitely coming off as a show tha’s directed more towards a Japanese audience, or at the very least someone who is very involved in Japanese culture, in terms of even the smallest things. Now the heroine stuff is also something that’s driven a little more to a younger demographic as well, so I’m getting the impression that this is really not directed at me in any way whatsoever, so it makes sense to stay away from it. Maybe this is a show I pick up if the count gets low really early.

Aho Girl

SYNOPSIS

Yoshiko is a genuinely stupid girl (she can even manage to get all 0’s on multiple choice tests). She hangs out at school with her childhood friend, who she claims to like, and he has to put up with all her ridiculous behavior!

(Source: MangaHelpers)

THOUGHTS – YAY

A show that’s about an extremely stupid character? You know what I hear? A LOT OF COMEDY!!! And I am always up for a good stupid comedy anime!

Battle Girl High School

SYNOPSIS

No synopsis available

THOUGHTS – NAY

If there’s no synopsis available by the time this gets posted, I don’t think it’ll matter much anyways with me. This is clearly a moe magical girl show, which has never worked with me and doesn’t appear to ever be marketed towards my demographic anyways. There’s certainly nothing here unique enough to grab my attention either, there just isn’t any reason for me to have any interest in this show.

Centaur no Nayami

SYNOPSIS

Being a teenager is never easy…especially for a centaur! Himeno is a sweet, shy girl, who like many teens her age, struggles with the trials and tribulations of attending high school. The difference is she’s a centaur; but she’s not alone. In fact, all of her classmates are supernatural creatures, sporting either horns, wings, tails, halos, or some other unearthly body appendage. Yet despite their fantastical natures, Himeno and her best friends—the dragon-winged Nozomi, and Kyoko with her spiraled horns—are down-to-earth, fun- loving teenagers who grapple with issues of life and love in a mostly normal daily school setting.

(Source: Seven Seas Entertainment)

THOUGHTS – YAY

Look, I cannot leave a show alone that has monster girls, ever since Monster Musume completely blew away my expectations for that kind of show. Granted, I’m not sure this show will be nearly as funny (especially not as ecchi-ridden) as Monster Musume, but hey, it’s got me curious enough to give it the ol’ look-see!

Clione no Akari

SYNOPSIS

The story centers around an illness-stricken, constantly bullied orphan girl named Minori. After one rainy day, she doesn’t turn up at school, having been admitted into a hospital in a distant town. Two months pass, and the girl’s two school friends, Takashi and Kyouko, receive a mysterious email with no sender listed. The email reveals a summer festival taking place at a nearby town…

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – NAY

Right off the bat, the animation style and setting just isn’t working with me and after reading the synopsis, there’s not really anything grabbing me either. I’m also getting a potential “depression anime” vibe from this show and if you know me well enough by now, that’s the ultimate red flag for me. I don’t watch anime to be sad, I watch it to laugh my ass off.

Dive!!

SYNOPSIS

The series revolves around the Mizuki Diving Club (MDC), which is on the verge of closing down after having financial troubles. The club’s new coach persuades the club’s parent company to stay open on one condition: that the club sends one of its members to next year’s olympics as part of Japan’s olympic team.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I am watching this purely because I want to see what the fuss is about with shows like Free! and Yuri!!! On Ice that seem to get everyone’s attention. I fully expect that this show will not live up to any level of expectations I have, because I feel like the show won’t really bring to the table what I want it to. But hey, there’s always hot guys in speedos to look forward to, if you’re into that sort of thing!

Gamers!

[No trailer available]

SYNOPSIS

This is a story that revolves around certain students and one hobby. Amano Keita is our lonely protagonist who has a passion for gaming and is friends with Uehara Tasuku, who is secretly a fellow gamer and is someone who believes his life is perfect. We also have Karen Tendou, the club president of the video games club and Chiaki Hoshinomori, who constantly bickers with Keita. This is a story filled with a non-stop sequence of comedy scenes and misunderstandings. Our chaotic romantic comedy now begins!

(Source: MyAnimeList)

THOUGHTS – YAY

I’m already interested based on the name alone, since it’s making me remember New Game! (which we’ll get to in a moment) and the subject material is obviously right up my alley. I’m not sure if the romantic comedy genre will work well with this kind of thing, but hey it’s not doing too bad with Eromanga-sensei right now, so who knows, right?

Hajimete no Gal

SYNOPSIS

Spring. The “season of love” has arrived and it seems that finding himself a girlfriend was harder than Junichi believed. To break the status quo, Junichi’s friends have forced him into confessing to the gyaru, Yame Yukana. However, things do not go quite as he expected. A series of “firsts” begins!

(Source: Manga-Updates)

THOUGHTS – YAY

This could potentially be really bad, like Masou Gakuen HxH and the recent Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai levels of bad, nothing more than endless scenes featuring giant breasts and panty shots. Now I’m assuming this’ll end up being a short, I can’t imagine this being a full 20-minute episode, so who knows, maybe this will end up being really entertaining in the way My Wife is the Student Council President has been for me. So because of that, I’ll give it a shot if it’s on Crunchyroll.

Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic

SYNOPSIS

Liones Yelistratova, a pure princess from a small country, enters a school in Hokkaido on a spring day. The school is a specialized educational institution operated by ALCA to train Logicalists, who maintain world peace. Liones enters class S, where she meets many classmates with unique personalities, like Nina. A lively and cute everyday life begins now.

(Source: MyAnimeList News)

THOUGHTS – NAY

So it’s Luck & Logic, but with younger characters? I watched the first season of Luck & Logic and while I did manage to finish the first season of the show, it was a very weak show compared to the rest and I’m not convinced I’d even watch a second season of it with the same characters. So with this being the case now, another version of the show that I wasn’t too big on, with new characters that appear to be younger? I’m not interested.

Isekai Shokudou

SYNOPSIS

On the first basement floor of a building at a corner of a shopping district near an office area, there is a shop. It is the restaurant Youshoku no Nekoya (Western Cuisine Cat Restaurant), whose door is adorned with a picture of a cat. Founded five decades ago, it has since been filling the bellies of the salarymen from the office area.

While it is described as Western cuisine, it is an extraordinary restaurant with menus beyond Western cuisine that are rich and sumptuous. However, for people from that world, it is even more especially unique.

There is a secret in Nekoya. Every Saturday when the shop takes a day off, Nekoya is teeming full of special customers. With the jingling of the bell, it serves the rarest, most wonderous of delicious cuisine at the request of customers from all walks of life, upbringing, and ethnicity.

Certainly, for the office workers, it is a familiar place with familiar dishes. However, for the Saturday customers or people from that world, it is nothing but cuisine never seen or heard before … an Alternate-World Restaurant.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

This trailer was losing all my attention until I saw the gorgeous elf waitress and then I was sold. Not to mention, the title alone really garners some interest, does it not? “Restaurant to Another World”, I’m definitely curious to see where that goes. I hope it’s either a calm slice of life deal like Flying Witch was with its supernatural theme, or maybe a little funnier than that. Who knows, but there’s definitely a bit of my interest being piqued here.

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni

SYNOPSIS

After a freak accident involving some lightning winds up zapping him dead, 15-year-old Mochizuki Touya wakes up to find himself face-to-face with God. “I am afraid to say that I have made a bit of a blunder…” laments the old coot. But all is not lost! God says that he can reincarnate Touya into a world of fantasy, and as a bonus, he gets to bring his smartphone along with! So begins Touya’s adventure in a new, anachronistic pseudo-medieval world. Friends! Laughs! Tears! Inexplicable Deus ex Machina! He sets off on a journey full of wonder as he absentmindedly travels from place to place, following whatever goal catches his fancy. The curtains lift on an epic tale of swords, sorcery, and smartphone apps!

(Source: J-Novel Club)

THOUGHTS – YAY

This was a tough call, because I wasn’t sure how I felt about the show, given its premise. It has a bit of a Konosuba feel to it, but with far less randomness. It’s going to be a rough first episode in my head if this show ends up on Crunchyroll, because I don’t know how I feel about this smartphone in a fantasy world premise. Either way, we’ll see what happens.

Jikan no Shihaisha

SYNOPSIS

Chronos Rulers (Jikan no Shihaisha) are those who fight the time-eating demons that appear when people wish they could turn back time. The Chronos Rulers fight a time-manipulation battle against these demons.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

HOLY CRAP THE ANIMATION LOOKS AMAZING!!! Same goes to the character designs and such, not to mention that awesome jazzy music playing in that trailer. Now the premise of the show isn’t anything special, in fact it does worry me, because I’m now having flashbacks to Divine Gate, which also looked incredible, but was dull as shit. So we’ll have to wait and see.

Kakegurui

SYNOPSIS

Hyakkaou Private Academy. An institution for the privileged with a very peculiar curriculum. You see, when you’re the sons and daughters of the wealthiest of the wealthy, it’s not athletic prowess or book smarts that keep you ahead. It’s reading your opponent, the art of the deal. What better way to hone those skills than with a rigorous curriculum of gambling? At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer. But when Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she’s gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like!

(Source: Yen Press)

THOUGHTS – NAY

I’m getting a mixture of Joker Game and Mirai Nikki, which are both shows I couldn’t get into at all. The more cerebral types of anime don’t seem to hit well with me, certainly not because I don’t like shows that make me think, but in anime I generally want to watch shows that allow me to turn my brain off. So mix that with the many shows I’m comparing this one to that I didn’t like, it’s hard for me to find reasons to want to watch this one.

Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5g92f2

SYNOPSIS

The year is 1863 as the tumultuous samurai era is coming to an end, Japan is split between the pro-shogunate and anti-shogunate factions. The fate of the world is threatened as an army of historical revisionists are sent from the future to alter the course of history. In order to bring these forces down and protect the real history, two sword warriors, spirits who are swords brought to life by Saniwa (sage), rush to Edo. The polite and thoughtful Horikawa Kunihiro and the short tempered yet skillful Izuminokami Kanesada, who served the same master, confront the invading army along with a lively gang of other warriors including Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, Yagen Toushirou, Tombokiri, and Tsurumaru Kuninaga. As the fate of history lies in these hero’s hands, what meets the blade is yet to be uncovered…

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

This show is getting in solely on name recognition, so it will have a very short leash. I did like the brief animation we saw, along with the character designs though. I do see potential in such a concept, especially with the time period this is set in, so we’ll see what happens.

Knight’s & Magic

SYNOPSIS

A mecha otaku is reincarnated into another world as Ernesti Echevalier, also known as Eru. In this world exists huge humanoid weapons known as Silhouette Knights. Dreaming of piloting those robots, Eru, with childhood friends, Archid Walter and Adeltrud Walter, aim to become Knight Runners, pilots of these Silhouette Knights.

(Source: MyAnimeList)

THOUGHTS – NAY

Absolutely not. It’s a mech anime with tiny anime characters and the outfits are driving my brain nuts with how stupid they look. I’m sad to say no to a show where fhána does the OP, but I’ve gotta give this one a flat-out no.

Koi to Uso

SYNOPSIS

Lies are forbidden and love is doubly forbidden. In the near future, when young people in Japan turn sixteen, they are assigned a marriage partner by the government. People don’t have to go through the trouble of looking for someone, and everyone accepts that the country will find a compatible partner to make them happy. Yukari Nejima is fifteen years old. He lives in a small corner of the country, and just can’t seem to get ahead in life. Both academically and athletically he’s below average. But within him, he hides a heart burning with passion! In this world in which love is forbidden, what will happen to him when he falls in love?

(Source: Manga Box)

THOUGHTS – NAY

Another flat-out no. It looks like a mushy high school romance with some real garbage animation, in my eyes. This show also has a concept as dumb as Shimoneta, but that show took the dumb concept and ran with it in the goofiest way possible. This show? It wants to take this stupid concept and be as serious as possible with it. That will never work with me.

Made in Abyss

SYNOPSIS

An enormous pit and cave system called the “Abyss” is the only unexplored place in the world. Strange and wonderful creatures reside in its depths, and it is full of precious relics that current humans are unable to make. The mysteries of the Abyss fascinate humans, and they head down to explore. The adventurers who venture into pit are known as “Cave Raiders.” A little orphan girl named Rico lives in the town of Ousu on the edge of the Abyss. Her dream is to become a Cave Raider like her mother and solve the mysteries of the cave system. One day, Rico starts exploring the caves and discovers a robot who resembles a human boy.

(Source: Anime News Network)

THOUGHTS – YAY

This one will have a short leash, as I’m really not sure where I am on the concept, the setting and the overall feel to the show. But the character designs are just so damn cute, I have to see if the designs match the feel to the show. Who knows, this could be the big shocker hit on my list this year. Then again, now I’ve called it, I’ll probably drop it first episode. If I can watch it, that is.

Musashino!

THOUGHTS – YAY

Yes, I’m giving the green light to a show I don’t have a clue what it looks like or what it actually is. Just look at the image on livechart.me for the show. That alone makes me curious. It looks like it might be fun.

Nanamaru Sanbatsu

He experiences the joys of answering correctly and the frustrations of not getting to the buzzer quickly enough. He and his colleagues hone not only their knowledge, but also various techniques as they pursue victory in the world of competitive quiz.

Shiki Koshiyama is about to dedicate his teenage years to quizzes. You too should try becoming the next quiz champion!

THOUGHTS – YAY

This has the potential to be so dumb. Now the real question is, will it be the good kind of dumb as a show that takes the concept of a simple quiz game and makes it into this intense, over-the-top thing. Or will be the bad kind of dumb, as it’s taking it too seriously to the levels of a Kuroko no Basket, which in my viewing experience has thrown me completely off of things. The whole spending a minute analyzing a one-second moment just makes my head spin. So hopefully it leans more to the fun side of things.

New Game!!

[No trailer available]

SYNOPSIS

Second season of “New Game!”

THOUGHTS – YAY

It was one of my nominees for Show of the Year in 2016, what reason could I possibly have to not watch the second season? I don’t need any material to have a desire to watch this show all over again!

THOUGHTS – YAY

I was about to say no to this one and then that last line shows up. “Patricia asks Nora to tell him the secrets of life, and Nora starts by explaining the adult magazine that they found in the park.”, I have to see what the hell leads to that. Hopefully, it ends up being a weird, fun little comedy, which it sounds like it will be.

THOUGHTS – YAY

A badass-looking spy anime with a female cast? Along with that, a really beautiful animation style and quite the interesting setting as well? Count me interested. Hopefully it doesn’t lean too serious like Joker Game did to lose my interest.

THOUGHTS – NAY

Yeah…this is looking WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too serious for me. I think this might be a show people will talk about as the season goes on, but it’s the kind of show that just has zero interest coming from me. In my eyes, this looks like a really boring show and when I get the sense of a political struggle and war going on, I’m even less interested. It’s gonna take a hell of a lot to get me interested in a politics/war anime.

THOUGHTS – NAY

It’s a show about an older woman getting it on with a younger girl. Y’know, I could just watch hentai if I wanted to see this, right?

THOUGHTS – YAY

A Stan Lee anime project?! I have no idea how it’ll work out, but holy shit I want to be able to see that!

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan

SYNOPSIS

Hiraga Josef Kou, a genius scientist, and Robert Nicholas, an archives and cryptanalysis expert. The two work as a team as the Vatican’s “miracle examiners,” traveling the world to investigate the authenticity of claims of miracles.

THOUGHTS – NAY

I don’t even know why I put this on the list, I should’ve known better that too even look into anything that has the name ‘Vatican’ involved in it. This sounds boring as all hell and I see zero reason to watch this, a serious-sounding show with religious undertones. Count me beyond out on this one.

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou

SYNOPSIS

Inaba Yuushi’s parents died in his first year of middle school, and he moved in with his relatives. Though they did care for him, he could tell he was a burden. After he graduated, he happily prepared to move to a high school with a dormitory. Unfortunately, the dormitory burned to the ground before he could move in! Yuushi doesn’t want to live with his grudging relatives, but it’s rough finding lodging as an orphaned student with little money. He finally finds a room in a nice old building which seems too good to be true.

The catch is that it is a Monster House, a place where humans and supernatural creatures—ghosts, mononoke, etc.—live together. Another high schooler lives there, a cute girl named Akine, and she’s completely unfazed by the monsters. In fact, she can even exorcise evil spirits! Yuushi’s high school life just got much stranger than he ever bargained for!

THOUGHTS – YAY

I’m always a little curious about any show that takes the youkai concept and twists it a little bit. The idea of a “Monster House” alone grabs my attention, I’m hoping it ends up being a nice mix of fun and emotion, like The Morose Mononokean was.

Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e

SYNOPSIS

Koudo Ikusei Senior High School is a leading prestigious school with state-of-the-art facilities where nearly 100% of students go on to university or find employment. The students there have the freedom to wear any hairstyle and bring any personal effects they desire. Koudo Ikusei is a paradise-like school, but the truth is that only the most superior of students receive favorable treatment.

Ayanokouji Kiyotaka is a student of D-class, which is where the school dumps its “inferior” students in order to ridicule them. For a certain reason, Kiyotaka was careless on his entrance examination, and was put in D-class. After meeting Horikita Suzune and Kushida Kikyou, two other students in his class, Kiyotaka’s situation begins to change.

THOUGHTS – NAY

I don’t see anything here that really brings anything unique to the table, it just sounds like another high school anime that’s filled to the brim with delinquents and as the synopsis calls them “inferior” students. I’ve seen plenty of shows that try this and almost all of them fail miserably. This one appears to be going the serious route also, so I’m definitely not interested.

And that’s it! So at this time, the total number of shows I’ll be watching at the start of the spring season will be…19!

Now this time I’m a little more prepared for a much smaller number, since Netflix and Anime Strike are starting to take shows away from Crunchyroll. Either way, there’s a pretty healthy list going on here. Hopefully Crunchyroll doesn’t lose New Game!! like they did with Saekano Season 2 and Sword Orotoria. I will lose my shit if that happens. But I see a lot of good comedies here, lot of potential for a fun season. Hopefully the numbers don’t dwindle so fast in the early-going.

See you in July!
